  • The Board game, Ankh: Gods of Egypt has a great core gameplay that is plagued by a mechanism that is seems almost universally frowned upon! Is it really bad? Let's discuss it!

I think the merge mechanic is a great solution to the gridlock that is inherent in dudes on a maps style games.

I didn't talk about it much but the way the game handles the merged players turns is great for this. It's not a massive advantage as you're still netting 2 actions between you but having an extra oppertunity to get a bonus is very nice and can help turn the tide.

@@Diceonahill for sure I've had plenty of games where the merged god wins.

It is an interesting concept, poorly executed. I haven’t been on the recieving end, but i totally understand that the player in last place can feel as though they have been eliminated. They lose all of their progress and are left with nothing to keep them invested in the game. Even if they don't walk away from the table, they can lose interest. In a way, expecting someone to keep playing after they have lost investment is even worse than player elimination.
The rest of the game is great though. I hear good things about it as a 2 player game.

HAAHAHAHHAA BANNED. Ban that guy from game night. Dude knew the merge was coming; better or worse prepared, just a sore looser.
There is a scenario with no merge.

Haha, there's no hard feeling on my end. That night wasn't their typical behaviour. It is good there is a non-merge scenario but felt merge is better as an exception instead of the rule. If that makes sense?

      @@Diceonahill It does!
I don't find it problematic but it is undeniable that many players dislike it.
There are also good houserules discussions on BGG.
HAHAHAHA my goodness having to put up with such behaviour on a regular basis.
Kuddos for your patience and understanding.

Personally I dont think it's garbage. I hope it didnt come across this way. The particular mechanism in question I wasn't sure about (still not sure about). But if what I described was a total turn-off I'm glad I saved you the time and potential bad experience! 😀
