I would like to thank everyone for their wonderful input, and comments. Also thanks to everyone who went on my Facebook page, and my own UA-cam channel. Always feel free to contact me with any questions, or suggestions. I’m always happy to help. This tutorial was a lot of fun to do, and hopefully it was a inspiration for many.

I have never yet found dirt for doing scenery that is better in color, and form than that in southern Arizona. Particularly in the area between Tucson, and Phoenix.

What a great demystification of scenery making. I most appreciate the commentary around "Technique doesn't matter much! Just go with the flow until you get what you like" Best part is about the products to use, especially the adhesives. Great piece!

    Great video as always, Ken.
I must say though as a tip for those inspired by this: you should try static grass. It is so much better scenically than fine turf especially at ho scale. I would have given all the foreground a static grass carpet.
I also liked seeing the ballast spreader. I have never seen one in action.

On the good news side: this is a wonderful scenery video. On the bad news: it is one of HUNDREDS of scenery videos and clinics that assume we are modeling mountains! Come on now people, trains do NOT always run in mountains. How about the midwest? I model the Nebraska area. We might have a few limestone or sandstone outcrops, but the terrain is usually clay or loess and the terrain is quite different. We do habe fills and cuts and other features that are interesting but very FEW scenery videos touch on that. Mountains are cool as heck but how about some equal time for the effective modeling of the prairies?

Very insightful.at the risk of being a negative Nancy haha, my only constructive criticism, is for tighter framing, focused on the areas you are working in. Too often, you can see your full body, and 2-3 feet of work space past your right shoulder, that doesn’t add anything to the instructional video. What’s in your hands and what you’re doing with them, is what’s important.

Incredibly helpful as always - My dilemma - built a 32" x 80" hollow core door upon which I have planned my n scale layout. The idea is to to create a Christmas scene which I'd (with the help of friends) carry up from the basement for the Christmas season. Then bring it back downstairs sometime in February (yeah, sure...) I'm looking for advice on how to keep it from getting too heavy. Of course the easiest one would be to to build it upstairs, but that's not really an option. It wasn't so much a discussion as a look... from my wife. Any suggestions? No, I mean in terms of lighter materials?

Terrific video, two questions if I may, for doing the painting on the rock faces, is it the paint you're using that allows the paint to adhere and get absorbed by the castings or is it the type of plaster you're using? I'm using the Bragdon molds with plaster of paris and find I sometimes have to wait a week before the Woodland scenic rock coloring system leopard spot sprayed technique or it won't get absorbed.
For the trees can you tell me the manufacturer please , thanks Lynn

    • @tim01433
      @tim01433 3 роки тому +1

The paint absorbs into the plaster, to a point. I never tried Woodland Scenics rock coloring. The trees are a combination of faller, Heki, Grande Central Gems, and probably some others. I had a box of various trees, and just grabbed them randomly for the project.

Hey train all you train guys! I wanna make a new table top frozen Christmas mountain for my Christmas tree, I have a potted live bonsai tree I use. I have an N scale train in a box I got years ago. I want the train to wind up the mountain, polar express style... the mtn gonna be around 18-24 inches high. Can I just hide a steep downhill run in the back to get the train back down to the far side of the layout? This setup sits on my Amish fireplace, it’ll be roughly 16 deep and ~3ft long/wide. I’m trying to find out if my idea on getting the train back down the mountain will work. Mtn will be around 1/3 of the 16x36 inch footprint of the layout, hidden downhill tunnel in the back, down to a tunnel outlet in the far rear corner, bend/turn around that side, and runs back along the front of the layout back to the mountain. Is a ~20inch drop in 3 ft unrealistic?? There will be a turn at the bottom of that, maybe make the hill steeper so I can have a few inches of flat track right before it turns out of the tunnel? I just don’t want to build it and waste money and time if it won’t work...

    • @tim01433

Richard Allsebrook the problem was that I rushed the process a bit, causing to loose some definition. I disagree with the process of casting them first then applying them. Neve looked natural, and no nice rock flow.

My biggest problem is with what the California state Senate jerks did a couple of years ago , outlawing sheet extruded foam .
Being about 80 miles away from the state line .
None of the hardware stores or insulation suppliers can get it .
    Pink or blue sheets .
I tell them that I need it to build a HO layout and instead of sticking to what they know , they want to start arguing about how model railroading is dying hobby .
My response is always this .
" Before the pandemic the hobby averaged $ 1 . 5 Billion annually and the last time I checked the hobby broke it's own record of $ 2.7 Billion dollars this last year alone " . Then my followup with " Yea right " .
I'm in Nevada . If you can see about helping me with information on locating the sheet foam without backing . It would be very appreciative .
    P. S.
Lowe's and Home Depot cannot get them either .
Pink is from Corning ( ? ) , blue is from Dow .
