I can’t believe they can let their children believe their father was dead… so cruel
Right?! How awful!!! Of course they never forgave him, he was already ‘dead’ to them.
There would be no forgiveness from me
This happened to my dad and his siblings way back when. They were told by their mother that their dad (my grandpa) was dead. 6 months later he comes walking up the driveway. He was in rehab and my grandma decided to tell all 6 children that he was dead. Imagine their shock when he showed up.
I know, right!...as a mother I just cannot comprehend doing that to my children!!! SELFISH F&*K$ - in my opinion.
Today is the anniversary of when my dad died. I remember when I found out, I cried automatically, but I felt nothing because I was so traumatized. I'm still traumatized over 20 years later. If my parents had been lying to me about that, just to get money, I don't think I'd ever speak to them again.
If I fake my death and successfully get away with it for 5 years you're never seeing me again.

Those who tried to *rescue* a “dead” man are heroes. They jumped quickly into action even though it’s a shame that they wasted their time and resources without knowing it was in vain.

What’s awful about this story is that allot of the RNLI are volunteers, doing this because they are good people, and getting a call like this (thinking there could be a guy in the water and they don’t know where) is really a distressing thing for them to hear. They dealt with that stress of waiting to find a body for 4 whole days
It’s a shame because they wasted resources that could have been used for another missing person.
This!!! And the large amount of funding they wasted because of it and saying it was the biggest search they've done in a while. So frustrating
It’s so sad they all wasted their time and resources. Imagine their families being worried for them. Imagine the trauma of trying to look for somebody relentlessly and then not finding anything. Horrible.

John renamed himself John… this guy is a freaking genius! I truly can’t believe he wasn’t caught before turning himself in. I bet his sons would like to send him on a permanent canoe trip. 😂

Just a PSA, heard a couple of US UA-camrs say 911 as the emergency line for countries that aren’t the US. And thought it would be good to clarify that it’s 999 in the UK (where this case is), and the numbers differ in most countries. Just don’t want anybody caught out if they are in a bad spot.

112 is the most common, “the standardized” I believe - pretty much works in all Europe and many countries in other continents as well. E.g. According to Wikipedia in the UK it is automatically forwarded to the local number, 999 and the same happens in the US with 911. So, if you were to remember one, this is to remember! ;) (Maybe the UA-camr messed this up with 911?)
Yes, that's a big bug bear of mine too.
It is rather annoying that people can't research the countries emergency dial code that they are telling the story from - but Kendall is very good in every other sense so I don't mind too much though!
But yes, it's 999 here in the UK 🤦
When I was in Wales, the RNLI were letting people know to use 112 instead of 999, not just for coast. This is because when you use 112 the dispatch will automatically know your location and you do not need a signal for it to work. :)
Good point, i noticed an Aussie story being told recently that referenced 911 - our emergency number is 000, usually said as "triple zero".

I'm just kidding. I think you're right though. When I was training a lot of people would come in who were absolutely SURE that they could easily fight because it looked so easy in the movies. I guess a certain kind of person could get caught up in their imagination and forget that reality is not like that...

Narcissistic people tend to over estimate their intelligence and capabilities. They think they are smarter than everyone and can fool them easily. That's why the idiot went to the police, he thought he could convince them of his "amnesia".
It’s sad that they felt trapped in their situation to try this. I can’t imagine why they thought moving back to the same town was a good idea? As far fetched as the plan was, hiding in his home seems insane, especially from his own kids. :(

Wow. John is a obviously a piece of work but in my opinion, Ann is just as bad. Imagine telling your kids their dad has died, even though you KNOW he's alive, and keeping this up for 5 years! That's the worst thing about this in my opinion.
I live in the Redcar area and remember the massive search efforts. Several colleagues at the time put forward the idea that someone could fake their death that way and it just seemed too insane to actually be possible. It was shocking when the news came out that he'd turned up alive and well. As much as I hope that the Redcar RNLI got some kind of donation for the cost of the rescue crew's efforts, given the small amount of money recovered from him, I expect the answer is probably 'no'.
I live in Hartlepool and I remember how massive it was locally and in the papers. i never thought i'd see something so local on Kendall's channel

Could you imagine if someone died during that search and rescue for him at sea? Not to mention the psychological damage they caused to their kids. These people are sick.
Am proud of our emergency services, they really did search for him.
What a shame that he was such a douche that he wasted the time of all those devoted people who just wanted to help him and his family. John sucks.

I remember when this came out. The story was mental! There was a really good dramatisation called ‘The Thief, his wife and the canoe’
So…am I bad in thinking that the worse part for me was how his kids/family felt thinking he’s dead and all of a sudden he’s alive??? I mean yeah he stole a lot of money and used a deceased baby’s name but the worst part is him letting his kids and family think he’s dead!! I’ve lost A LOT of loved ones-pretty much EVERY single person that’s loved me so maybe that’s why….idk

I remember this , all over the news at the time, they did a program on this from Ann’s eyes, she said he was abusing her all their married life , and bullied her into this , he was always looking for a quick rich scram, he dose seem like a real nasty person 😮

I live in this area and It’s so strange to hear my favourite youtuber talk about a place where I am from ! My sister worked at the prison he worked in . When John went missing everyone that worked there didn’t believe that he had actually gone missing and thought that it was a scam all along. So when he turned up out of the blue it wasn’t much of a surprise 😂 .

Being in the UK when this was happening was a WILD ride. The ITV series about this was absolutely brilliant, I felt so sorry for Anne. I really hope she’s having a lovely peaceful life with her sons.
