    This is so spot on. Your story in regards to leaving America at a low point is so similar to my experience. And I expected to struggle but at least I’d have a change of scenery.
    To my surprise my life in Thailand has been incredible and of course there are bad/annoyances in my life but it’s my lower expectations that have kept me appreciative to everything this place has to offer. I’ve been here 4 years and I’m still like a tourist taking pictures/videos everywhere I go because Asia never gets boring and that’s alright with me.

    Being in SE Asia made me a minimalist. No car (it's unthinkable not having a car in the U.S.) Staying in 37sqm condo (which is barely acceptable if you are in SF or NYC in your 30s) eating 100 baht Thai/Japanese meals (hard to beat!). You need to make sure you make friends with same mindset in SE Asia as well. There are 5 star accommodations/ restaurants that will make you fall into trap of spending $6,000-$7,000 a month easily even though many people make $700-900 month in Thailand. I've seen expats with high positions in corporate world being broke in SE Asia.

      Where in Southeast Asia and America are u talking about? In New York city you don't need a car. In Los Angeles or other cities you do need a car. But then again, the same goes for Thailand or Malaysia. Maybe Bangkok & Kuala Lumpur have decent public transportation (I wouldn't say it's on par with NYC) but go outside KL & Bangkok public transport is terrible. Much worse than Los Angeles, Miami, Boston, etc. Don't even mention Indonesia , The Philippines, Cambodia, Myanmar, etc because public transport is far worse. And don't even mention the traffic in all Southeast Asian major cities. Minus Singapore, their traffic is far worse than New York or Los Angeles.

    I've reached a very high level in my field, and have great accolades, and yet I find myself still looking for that validation. When I visited SE Asia, I feel a different energy, especially as an Asian American. I had my boss say "one day you will be like me"...and it made me realize I didn't want to be like her...scary!

    thanks for sharing! low points can be good because you can honestly say I GOT NOTHING TO LOSE! haha! as someone whose is in their mid-50's (worked in the US for a very long time) that gave it all up 4 years ago, it's been a challenge to let go and shed the indoctrinated ideas of what makes one worthy. who are you without a house, money, a job or a plan?! it's been a long road to realize that there is no such thing as stability and that everything is temporary and that all that stuff didn't always bring joy any way. I'm learning to appreciate the present and trust my own life and though these decision are not easy, because everyone else is moving one way and you are going in another direction completely, I would never have had the chance to live and experience Mexico or Costa Rica and now, Bali... (even looking for agencies to stop in Seoul for some medical tourism- another great video of yours). So far, I've had only one true expectation for myself and that is to remember that my job is to be a world citizen and respect, embrace and appreciate the people and the culture as their visitor. I'm also grateful to be an American ...with this passport!

  • @bangalorebobbel
    @bangalorebobbel 2 роки тому +1

    Very wise thoughts. And very well made video ;-)
    I guess quite some people make their decisions also based on wrong impressions about validation as long as they are traveling as tourists. If you go somewhere as tourist the whole tourism industry as well as local authorities pamper you day and night for delivering you a positive travel experience - in return for your money, of course. It is their business model, but quite often tourists misunderstand the situation and think how they are treated is part of the local mentality and is done since they are seen as kind of a VIP or at least better valued than at home and develop any kind of urge to go and settle there.
    But as soon as they migrate somewhere (and it doesn't matter whether to Asia or anywhere else) they are most likely no more seen as tourist (except by mistake and by people not familiar with them). If you settle somewhere abroad You become kind of a local, but usually always with the stamp of being a stranger to that place, of being an immigrant. And depending on how you look and behave and speak, you might be even very easily identificable as such a stranger being there, and in the longer run you might face even much more inconveniences and even troubles than any locals. You won't have any more VIP status and might even face more problems with authorities and businesses, and you might even find yourself suddenly in any xenophobic or racist situations, means you might face all kind of new and unwanted experiences you never made coming to a place as tourist. Your validation suddenly doesn't depend anymore from being seen as a cash cow from abroad but will depend on many common things like how wealthy you are (at least in the perception of the locals), whether you own the property you live on or whether you are just a tenant, whether you run a business or simply hang around, whether you spend a lot of money in the local businesses, whether you share one of the local faiths and become a member of the local church or temple etc, whether you become a member of a local family by marriage, whether you speak the local language, whether you are of any value for your neighbors or the local community at all or just an extra burden, etcpp, it is an endless list.
    And as said, this isn't a thing of Asia in special, it happens everywhere. People running away from Asia since their expectations were rudely missed, would most probably also run away from South America or whereever else. Everywhere you might need visa and special permissions for whatever, everywhere you might have to deal with local plumbers and electricians, everywhere you might find challenging neighbors. Everywhere are authorities, laws, regulations, neighbors. Except you live alone in any remote desert or jungle or island.
    Yet there are many places in Asia and the rest of the world where permanently staying foreigners are welcomed and supported if they belong to groups like foreign retirees, digital nomads or hippies etc.. Depending on the location there might be a special focus on seniors concerning health and easy shopping and entertainment, or on internet and shared office spaces, or on easy access to vegan food, alternative medicines, or to loud music and drugs, and so on. But all these things are also business models and don't reflect a personal validation or so. Yet it might be for some people a better solution for a longer (or final) stay to find such a supporting environment than living anywhere else in the same country ...

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  2 роки тому +1

      Yes you’re absolutely correct in everything said but I’d like to add that there are sometimes communities that support expats and governments might be pushing for it but things change fast particularly in Asia and in a few years you’ll see completely new policies. Thus it’s never a good idea to think of any moves out here as permanent especially to countries that are currently trending towards higher costs and stricter regulations towards foreigners

    • @bangalorebobbel
      @bangalorebobbel 2 роки тому

      @@livetravelasia totally agree, if we don't focus only on validation aspects we see lot of other important issues which are often not seen by people wanting to settle abroad. As I said, many seem to stay for too long in a tourist bubble, they are not aware about the local reality but caught in a dream of kind of an exotic shangrila-type of paradise and absurd imaginations they develop when they travel as tourists to a place, misunderstanding friendly treatment as true love and friendship instead of business based politeness. When people with such a mindset finally decide to settle somewhere and try not to be a short time tourist, suddenly the harsh reality comes in. And often enough also the reality might change over time.
      So, also the contrary to what you told might easily happen, means new governments might not push to get foreigners in (as the government before might have done) but tending more to the opposite direction ... especially targeting with new measures and rules not tourists but only those who intend to stay longer.
      Over the time many important aspects like visa regulations, ways and rules to get citizenship or rights to stay permanently, or rights concerning purchasing an immovable property, getting a job permit or running a business, limits for money transfers into or out of the country etc. might change completely. One should always keep that in mind if planning for a longer stay somewhere as a foreigner. Changes might come in your favour or not, you cannot predict it.
      Also non-governmental aspects might change. The 'general mood' of a majority of people in a country towards strangers might change over the years (often depending from ruling parties, agitations etc. but also depending from the shere number of strangers at a certain place, migration streams from fugitives etc.). Whether you are seen as an expat or immigrant or whatever else might also affect the situation.
      But all that is not restricted to Asian countries ... all that might also happen elsewhere. As long as you are not holding citizenship status, or being at least an official spouse of a citizen, some or all of those aspects might change for you over the time, nothing is granted forever.

    My father is asian and my mother is white. Im a man of God. My appearance is temporary. Ive been called at least 3 different ethnicities and my appearance has chabged drastically through the years. The direction of my growth and my heart are all I cocern myself with. The only way through this life is through Jesus. The depth of unfairness is deeper than most will ever understand. Some of us are born to be a burden. Some of us are born with only strength that comes from sin, pitting us against our fellow man instead of humbling ourself to him. I myself was born that way. Everyday I am becoming molded and shaped by the spirit. The mind is a dead end. Our buildings and possession are a dead end. Our hearts will be all we are left with when we leave this Earth. Not our reputation or our wealth. The lies of others may affect what is outside of us but they cannot affect what is in our heart unless we submit to their power in "worldly" things. The hardest truths to accept are those that we are on the wrong side of. But if we are able to know them it means there is that truth within us however weak it may be. If we hold onto our resistance to sin, it becomes stronger and our strength that is through negative sin such as anger, or bitterness becomes weaker. Be aware of the foundation you build your life from. I pray that everyone reading this finds the narrow path.

    I actually get a lot more validation/ego in Asia than in USA because I don't believe in consumption and materialism, which is rampant in USA. I have fun and travel a lot within Asia. But I can do it on a budget. For work I do in Asia, I do what I feel passionate about (humanitarian/mental health) work, so it's very meaningful for me, even if there are a lot of challenges (I love challenges anyway), because what I do have a lot more impact because people need it here so much more, and people appreciate it a lot more here. I also feel validated because I feel like my work is meaningful. People are so much more friendlier and treat me like family too. I don't really care about validation or ego boosting from other people, because I already get it for myself with my work and doing what I love to do in my life. Life in Asia feels a lot more simpler, especially in rural areas. Big cities can be similar to USA, in the way they can get a bit too egocentric and materialistic and disconnected. But rural areas or smaller cities and towns in Asia is where it's at.

    This video will go down in youtube history as LEGEND. At first I was a bit offended byt the title cause I thought WTF right does he have telling blah blah blah; BUT IM SO GLAD I clicked because this is not only economically sound it is PSYCHOLICALLY SOUND TO THE CORE.
    I had been quietly coming to the same conclusion after spending 5 years in Philippines and just watching the KIND of expats THAT place draws, then to Mexico the past 6 months and NOW (since March) IN THAILAND, next month in Vietnam; so I have OBSERVED MUCH and I came to the same conclusions but not as fully as you have laid it out here! WOW! But since I left Philippines last September, and ended an 8 year relationship with a Filipina there; (yeah cultural differences are serious, one being THEY LIE SO DAMN MUCH which is a part of that culture.....be offended all you want, whoever you are ) I have done serious introspection about my reasoning and purpose for this extended life in ASIA to make sure I don't become one of those JADED EXPATS (tons of them in the Philippines) who never truly KNEW SELF.

I think your realization and open mindedness is a guarantee you’ll figure out and further develop your own philosophy on life and happiness out here and I hope one day I can also learn from your experiences. Yeah I mean I don't think anyone should expect that haha, if you go to live in Asia especially like Korea and Japan it's still pretty expensive there unless you get a really cheap apartment, but reasons would be to explore/adventure out meet new cultures, people and enjoy, which of course this will be some hiccups on the way.

      G’day mate, how much approximately does a honda supercub cost in korea?

    • @livetravelasia
      @livetravelasia  2 роки тому

      @@alfazulu6515 mine cost 1000 bucks about 2 years ago but now with the shortages it may have even gone up in value? Koreans also make their own version and I’ve seen it as low as 500 bucks. Honda cubs no matter what they cost initially usually don’t cost much to own cause they tend to hold their value

      actually I'm the opposite. I'm single and miserable in korea 12 years. I need a wife and kids not because I think life is more fun or adventurous but because for me i need meaning and value for my life which goes beyond just self serving interests but investing it others/beyond my own life.

      @@breakaway2x I don't know how women are in Korea. But here in America and most western countries, the women have zero traditional values left. Most are narcissistic, masculine, abrasive, promiscuous and are INCENTIVIZED to leave the marriage. So yeah, get married and get financially and psychologically destroyed.

    Even though I lived like literally my whole life in Europe I still don’t like it cus I’m Asian and want to be around people who have the same culture like me and Traditions
    What does also doesn’t mean that I don’t like white people or something in that kind of racist white I just don’t feel really comfortable with the culture there so I just decided to study their dentistry and then go back to Asia and work there is a dentist Even though I grew up in Europe I never really liked it I just lived how others liveed there and the cultures are completely different so like for example New Year they don’t have it and then I have to celebrate like literally alone with no relatives the New Year so I don’t want that and I think I’ll just return back to Asia cus I was born there

      I don’t think you’re being racist. Any country will get old and boring. I still prefer American food, ameeican people but I can’t stand living there cause it’s boring. Don’t think of you wanting to leave as a result of you not preferring Europe but because you want to experience something different. It’s perfectly acceptable to want to also experience celebrating w family or to live w then etc. don’t box yourself into one place. Life’s too short to be bored
