    I'm not sure why there are SO many people rudely critiquing this video. Clearly you're just a guy fixing a problem in your home. You were kind enough to record the process to help some people save some money if they're in a similar predicament. Obviously you're not a professional in the laminate floor installation industry but you did a damn good job. I'd be willing to bet none of these critics could make a more thorough, informative video of the process themselves. Even worse is the "I WOULD NEVER INSTALL LAMINATE" comments. Why are they here?? If you would never install laminate why are you looking at a DIY video to replace a warped board?? People are nuts. You did a great job making an informative video that probably saved me a good chunk of money. I'm a 25 year old woman with absolutely zero experience in flooring. As a first time homeowner, I was planning to bring in someone to replace a water damaged board in my kitchen. I had no idea it would be this easy to fix on my own. You've inspired confidence in me to do it myself. I never comment on UA-cam videos but those comments were crazy. I'm very appreciative of your video and the fact that you took your time to record it for fellow homeowners. You did a fantastic job. Thank you!

    Very helpful. I have a spot near the front door that got rain on it, Yeah I know, Front door, no shelter = Problem. But This is how I bought it. Now I'm selling and I want to fix the floor and I'm 73 so a bit apprehensive. But now after watching your video, I'm ready to give it a go. Ignore the stiffnecks and their negative comments. When my washer hose broke, I had a flood! I used fans for a week and let the floor dry for a couple of months and it dried back to it's old self... Nice and flat. There's a couple of spots where the edge is a tiny bit wonky, but I have to really look for it. I live in sunny Arizona and we don't have much mold here, so I won't try this in humid areas... Under the "wood" they put a foam layer. That's what holds the water and causes mold and the damage to the flooring. ❤🌅🌵

    The bad design with laminate flooring is that it's only the edges that aren't waterproof.
    If a clear sealant could be inserted in the gaps, then it would fair much better when liquid is dropped on it.

    Had laminate floors everywhere downstairs for 14 years - including running in to a kitchen and in hallways with doors exposed to a lot of wet feet coming in from the Scottish weather - and never had a problem.
    The solution is to buy good quality materials and don’t flood the downstairs area like a swimming pool. If you have a flood downstairs it’s hardly the fault of the floor. As for cleaning use common sense and don’t flood it when mopping. Our floor has been wet mopped for years - again no bumps or issues with light water.
    If you don’t want floors that can be damaged in swimming pool style floods then definitely don’t use any wood.

    • @takemetakeme
      @takemetakeme 5 років тому

      Yeah. if the floor got damaged this easily it probably wasn't of good quality to begin with. I remember the laminate floor in the rental unit that we lived in 10+ years ago. We lived there 3 years and never had a problem. I used damp flat mop to clean it once a week, my daughter who was 0-2 at the time had accidents from time to time, never saw anything like this.
      Great thing they now have waster resistant laminate floors that are supposed to be water resistant for 30 hours.

I am angry with the person who invented this horrible system. Every time, if a drop of water falls on the floor I have to run and dry or clean. That is hell when one has a hairy dog -me - which I love very much - that goes to his bowl and goes around dropping water. If it falls in between the planks it is very possible that plank will need to be replaced soon. This is ridiculous!! What a price to pay for a bubble spill! I had laminate flooring put down in our kitchen, hall, dining room & living room. The biggest mistake I've ever made. If you have pets, if you'd like to ever wash your floor, if you have people come in with snow on their feet, if you spill anything, have an air conditioner that might leak, have a fish tank you need to clean, give water to your dogs..... shall I go on? Don't get laminate flooring!!! We have to rip ours up in 8 different places throughout our house and have decided to just tear it all out - a huge, expensive mistake. Also, you can't ever really get it to look nice, even using the special cleaning product, it's smudgy the minute you walk on it. Absolutely hate this stuff. I feel really sorry for this guy because it's just a matter of time before he'll be going through this again, and again, and again.

    Never use laminate (floating) floor in kitchen and other places where water usage is very often. Instead of repairing one or two pieces, just replace kitchen floor with tiles or some other water resistant floor. Once done. No worry for next 40 years.

      You can replace any board you want on a floor without removing alot. Circular saw and prybar to cut out the bad piece. Then get your new piece cut to fit if you need to. Since you cant fit both the tongue and groove into the space left, you must cut either the tongue or groove off. I like removing the groove myself, table saw makes easy work of that. Once that's cut the piece can lock in on one side, and use seam sealer to hold down the cut side. Tap her in and all done

    Had laminate floors in my house for ten yrs spilt drinks and all sorts cheap laminate them you’ll have issues

  • @umbertosmith1510
    @umbertosmith1510 5 років тому +1

    Improper expansion gaps...the problem area where the spill happened it is clear that the joint is not long enough...you can see it's shorter than the other joint, they can be staggered, but you always want ideally 8 inches between joints, some manufactures are different. It cupped up because of that, nothing do with the spill. So long as you wipe up fast that shouldn't have happened.
    Your joints are too short in places and the expansion gape ain't right. That's the problem.

  • @DiffEQ
    @DiffEQ 6 років тому +1

    Apparently, you don't know the difference between "damp" and "wet". I could see the water from your wiping rag seep into the adjacent seems! Isn't the what caused your problems in the first place?

    • @colchilibeck
      @colchilibeck  6 років тому

      Lol good point! If just the seam gets damp there doesn't seem to be an issue. We can "wash" the floor with a "damp" rag with no issues. The problem is when water is able to get past the top seam and into the lower section. You need enough water for the laminate to absorb it, causing it to swell up.

    I think the plank warped because you didn't leave much of a space for expansion.

    • @colchilibeck
      @colchilibeck  6 років тому +1

      The planks were not buckling. My nephew dropped a bottle of soapy water (for blowing bubbles) which caused the warp. The floors have been in for a year now and have had no buckling problems. I live in a area where humidity changes are not extreme throughout the year so expansion of laminate is not a common issue.

    AGAIN: These kind of floorings are the worst thing I ever put in my house. Next house, I will have ceramic or the kind all over my house and then have mats, maybe even putting heat under, even if I have to work much more to pay for that. No worries anymore. I got to run after the dog to dry his beard spills every time he drinks water. He is good mannered now that he comes to dry his mouth every time he drinks but still, always a worry.
