- Destiny 2's Lore tells us about the History and repeating story of the Hunter Vanguard position. How the position is often filled upon the death of the one in office & how Crow's Story will be similar to both Cayde's and to that of the Second Hunter Vanguard Caliban, who fell into the role because of duty and decided to serve the City and the Guardians anyway. This is the lore of the Caliban's Hand Exotic armour for Hunters.

This is literally the 4 versions of my hunter.
The first Hunter vanguard (idk how to begin to spell the name): let's play high stakes poker with a WISH dragon
Crow: lets sneak up on Amanda while she, a lightless person, is fighting a large group with a chaperone.

As a hunter main I can confirm we are all like this

I could have sworn I once heard Asher Mir speak a rare idle voice line talking about the Hunter Vanguard after Forsaken released. It was something along the lines of, "Is this the first loss of a Hunter Vanguard for you? This would be my fifth- no, sixth! And they didn't all die, either."
A few things for you, Byf:
1. Aparajita-4 was one you missed. That was the one before Kauko Swiftriver
2. The lore tab on the Bombardiers might have fit in well here, given it's the first Vanguard Dare. The one given to Tallulah Fairwind by the Speaker.
3. You might not remember this since it was in D2 vanilla, but during the missions to reclaim our lost subclasses (I think this was specifically the nightstalker one), a woman was speaking and you weren't entirely sure who it was. Unless that speaker has been otherwise identified, I believe that was Tallulah Fairwind. Let me know what you think
On point 3, it was the nightstalker one. I like the idea of that lady being Tallulah since she says a few of the famous Hunter lines, like "hunters, we belong in the wilds", which I'm pretty sure Cayde quoted at some point.
Also it just makes sense for me since she was a bow user during the Great Hunt, and bows were not a common weapon among Guardians. The only real instance of bow use was... with Nightstalker. So if she was a Nightstalker, it'd just fit together really well
@Patrick Roell. The Hunter speaking on that mission could also be Quantis Rhee, a Nightstalker sighted on the Orpheus Rigs exotic

Aparajita-4 - Former Vanguard, unknown status (3rd?) (Only mentioned in Peregrine Grieves Lore Tab [of all places])
Kauko Swiftriver - Former Vanguard, missing declared dead (4th?)
Andal Brask - 5th, Killed by Taniks.
Cayde-6 - 6th, Killed by Uldren and Co.
I never caught that Cayde was the 6th Vanguard, definitely not a coincidence, but probably no lore reason.

i think the lore tab on "Assassin's Cowl" might help answer why we know so little about the past Hunters
Hunter Dares totally have wish magic imbued in them. It would explain how Crow (Uldren) was conveniently able to take up Cayde's position, and it would be DOPE AS HELL. Imagine you will basically is required to come true.
Basically the Hunter vanguard position is forced to be filled even without the Speaker. Does that mean if even there is no vanguard technically there will still be a Hunter vanguard?
Speaking of taniks, i hope he gets brought back again. Just for the memes. Either as a scorn or, even funnier, as an eliksni guardian.

They should've made Shiro his mentor tbh. Shiro has a hard time forgiving the past (which is really evident look at how he's dressed) and Crow had a hard time accepting who he was and what he did. Both could work out these issues in a cool arc. But Crow instead saw his nightmare 2 times and now accepts everything cause Therapy I guess

I would love to Shiro back, he is one of my favourite characters. Cayde being his mentor is a cool relationship between them. They shoulda had him as the vanguard scout in the new light campaign, not Shaw Han.

But the place of the hunter vanguard will not be for him as somewhere I have seen that he does not want the place as he doesn’t wanna be locked up in that position. His two best friends died as vanguard and he doesn’t wanna end up like that.
There was a Hunter Vanguard by the name of Aparajita-4 (Apara-heeta) before Kauko (cow-koe) Swiftriver
The bit you said about Cayde’s will being carried out at the end is one of the things I like most about this season. The Traveler seems to have taken a personal interest in seeing it through
Hypothesis: The first Vanguard made a wish. "That my successors remain as long as I did." Cue wish magic taking that to mean "until death"

Doesn't matter if Crow or Sweeperbot get the Vanguard job, Hunters will ALWAYS do their thing it's just how we work. The nature of the job is what makes it so exciting and deadly. You are far less likely to die guarding a wall of blowing the dust off old manuscripts... But the wilderness will get you when your time is up.
That's the thing I always find funny about the classes. For there to ever really be a true threat to Titans and Warlocks, or a threat to the City in general, it means a good number of Hunters had to die putting up a hell of a fight. We don't go down that easy, so I can just imagine the smile on a Hunter's face when they die a final death and say "You're gonna regret that." to whatever sad sap approaches the walls.
I think its funny how trials hunters are the most terrifying hunter variant you'll ever encounter, but they rarely go into pve content
I feel that the hunter vanguards are literally the only people who go and actually try do something with their fellow guardians, just to only be killed not even 5 seconds later
And perfectly exemplifying why strategic commanders aren't supposed to be on the front line
I think this prolonged absence could be a good way for the hunter vanguard to become a more solid foundation. Andal seemed to have a bit of a sense for making the position have some form of command over the other hunters having a core group he could go to for help.
Shiro, Ana, Marcus, Shaw, and other prominent hunters need to be ready to stand up and support whoever takes the seat next. It can’t be a lone-wolf position anymore

@@bspoon2529 I know they remember him... What I mean is that they refuse to do anything with him in the lore or gameplay basically leaving him forsaken.
He gets a few mentions but is left in the dust none the less, his own gun was stripped of everything tied to him other than the guns name alone and that mention.
I want Shiro-4 to become a proper Iron Lord or something, he needs some love tbh

The quality while reading the lore is something that I didn't at first notice, but when you did the part where Speaker was talking over his shoulder, I noticed that you talked just like it was said.
Honestly my only gripe with Crow as the new Hunter Vanguard by now is that he is just too new to being a Guardian himself. In D1 at least, part of the Vanguards job was to mentor new Lights. And I might have missed some important lore, given that I had some pretty big breaks between playing D2, but at least to my knowledge Crow lacks the experience as a Hunter to be a mentor himself and the connections to at least point new lights to Hunters who could. If Bungie manages to find a believable workaround to that, Crow can sit at the desk for all I care.
Maybe the fact he has access to his life as Uldren Sov counts ad experience
Crow lacks experience that much is true, but he has been interwoven in things most hunters can only dream of since season of the hunt. He's still "young" and "dumb" but think of those things as supercharging his experience, not to mention his complete knowledge of Uldren's (who has been doing work since the awoken left the distributary) skills and tactics at basically being the awoken variant of a hunter. His emotional slant makes him just like other hunters, though I think his grave mistake along with Saladin's "sacrifice" last season tempers him out.
Crow has recovered Uldren's memories, and with it, literally thousands of years of experience as the right-hand man of the Queen, ace pilot, royal enforcer, and leader of an elite unit. They make note of this through the Nightmare of Uldren, who mocks Crow for "shooting more like me" and strategizing more like his past life ever since he regained those memories. It is also talked about in the resolution where the Nightmare becomes the Memory, with Crow noting how that as he stops running away from his/their past, he can instead use all of Uldren's knowledge, cross-reference it with the experiences of his new life, and use those past memories of Uldren's mistakes -- and triumphs -- to do good deeds in the future, even if he can't change the past.
Crow's been a Risen Lightbearer for several years now, and had to survive in the wilds as a lone Hunter would. For over the past year, he's been working as a scout for the City as a Guardian. Now, he has several millennia of experience and knowledge to draw from. And, most importantly, he has an honorable reason to actually want to be Hunter Vanguard, and not just have the position dropped in his lap, like the others.
He also shows a deep concern for all living things and peoples, and is an excellent scout that prefers to get things done swiftly and discreetly. He has the exact sort of skillset that the Vanguard needs right now, OTHER than just being someone who can rally the other Hunters.
I think that Crow would make an excellent Hunter Vanguard in the grand scheme. I want to see Ikora and Crow make amends, and personally bequeath unto him the Ace of Spades.

I’ve always found it interesting that Hunters have been the ones to shirk responsibility and ignore authority even before Cayde was Hunter Vanguard. Classes exist as a discipline of the Light. I wonder if personality shapes the growth of a Guardian’s Light. Of course this is contrary to the New Light experience where you begin as a Titan or Warlock or Hunter.
Drifter is a warlock that behaves like a Titan, Eris is a hunter that behaves like a warlock.
Classes in D2 are determined from resurrection, and personality is shaped by experience and exposure to stereotypes. Hunters are expected to be the scouts, the vanguard, the arrow that pierces deeply into the darkness. That’s why they’re hard to confine to the tower.
@@cjbladesworth8049 I don’t think Drifter’s class was specified. I think in some of the Aunor lore books his class is unknown. I get your point though. There will always be exceptions to the rule. Titans as carefree as Hunters and Hunters that delve into experimentation with the darkness. I just found it interesting how early on the stereotype for Hunters was formed. Way before Cayde who was the quintessential Hunter in the Vanguard seat.

I think that lore tab for Caliban's hand not only shows the personality for Caliban but also the charisma of the Speaker at the time. He was an amazing leader that could motivate even the hunters into action. Everyone believed in him and it shows how big a loss a man like him was and how important having someone like a Speaker was.

I had a weird feeling and thought while watching the end of the video when you discussed crow. I feel he will encounter one of the dredgens of jor. And will have to defeat them. Weird but it’d certainly gain the trust of other gaurdians that he defeated and maybe even killed a dark light bearer
About the Vanguard thing: yeah nah. As a lifelong hunter main I really think that the only way to get another hunter into that position is to rope them in with honor, and the only honor strong enough to keep us there is that which springs from death. It’s sad, but it’s reality. Honestly, I don’t think hunters need a Vanguard. Really, what I think the youngins need is are mentors, just old hunters giving them insight and guidance. I’ve done that from time to time. There were two in Taken King, one in vanilla D2, one in Forsaken, three in beyond light, and I gave them all clan invites and we’re quite the fireteam. You don’t have to be locked in a tower to mentor and lead. That’s never been our style anyways. We lead from the front.
Nice job linking the lore to your game experience. That's what I think the Speaker wanted to do with the whole Hunter vanguard thing. I don't know about the other Hunter vanguard members, but when I started to play back in The Dark Below I tried to follow the example Cayde gave of what it takes to be a great Hunter. I wasn't really able to mentor other new Hunters, but I mentored some Guardians.
We can also see how Hunter mentors would be extremely efficient with how crow was Guardian who thought he knew everything to be a good one until Saladin showed him a thing or two about being a Guardian.
I remember when my Hunter got thorn and another hunter asked mine for help with the strike and I set him on a path that’s since led to him being a raider and Trials regular. The evolution was beautiful to witness

I've said it a million times, and I'll say it again. Hunters have the coolest class lore.
That Uldren Crow or just plain Crow should be Hunter Vanguard would fit Cayde 6's Humour, and maintain the Hunter's Dare. Justice demands a life FOR a life, and better life than Crow's to offer? As Hunter Vanguard Crow would be the sacrifice required.
I still don't think Crow can take the position. It wasn't Crow that took out Cayde. He'd have to deal a whole new Dare.
@@Wulfspyder Hmm, It wasn't Crow who did the deed, that is true. It was Prince Uldren So. And yes either Petra Venge or Our Guardian who did for Uldren,.........But it was the The Traveller through a Ghost who chose to give Uldren the power of the Light and raised him back as Crow. And it is Crow who has now chosen to accept the Vanguard Dare, to BE Hunter Vanguard, (as he believes this to be the Traveller's purpose in resurrecting Uldren) Uldren & Crow, two distinct but intertwined persons, one body. I guess being Awoken also does not quite help matters. I know being brother to Mara So, Queen of the Awoken equally complicates matters.
Whatever the outcome, Hunters NEED a Vanguard Leader. It remains to be seen whether Uldren/Crow fit the bill.

He gets so sad and sentimental at the death of anyone and takes it to heart, which anyone should but he’s gonna be “responsible” for many deaths, and hasn’t really taken responsibility for what he’s done

Speaking of crow, I don’t think many people remember but back when bungie was doing the trailers for forsaken, there were images shown of an awoken male, now obviously crow/uldren wearing the scaly get up with a hood and some red clothing underneath, he also had a sawed-off double barrel shotgun on him. I have a feeling that if that wasn’t just concept art, that he does find his way into filling the hunter vanguard spot and that either he crafts/finds the shotgun or it is given to him as a congratulatory gift from someone in the tower for becoming the hunter vanguard.
Pretty sure Cayde would find the whole situation hilarious.

From what I was able to gather, it's the name of the operation of the strike, but it probably has a link with Caliban-8.
@@williamlabadie932 I think you've got it right: Caliban was the name of the strike operation/team. It might have been named after him, but I think it's just coincidental
Pretty sure tho there was theory’s going round that that could’ve been savathun tricking us because a normal strike team should only consist of 3 not 9 but I could be wrong
@@williamlabadie932 Exactly. If we go by the Comms Dialogue in other strikes, Caliban was a automaticly generated name for an operation, just like Piccolo (exodus crash or something) or Baby Dog (Lake of Shadows)
I remember in the Savathûn's Song Strike, Takeo-3 calling out over comms for Caliban. So it seems to me he stepped away from the role somehow or roped someone else into doing it, and ended up dying to a hive wizard who sucked the light out of him. Horrible way to go.
Caliban was the name of the fireteam running the strike.
Everyone said I was stupid when I pointed out that based on the recordings from the Ace of Spades mission Crow had to be the vanguard by default. Who was right? Me

Hunter Vanguards are too cool to stay alive. Titans are too loyal to the Vanguard to keep their Orders. And Warlocks are just too big brain to stay mentally stable.

the most import point you made is that he want to honor Caydes death and that is the base for the hunter dare.
I’m a returning guardian from the end of the first season of the Beyond Darkness expansion. I’ve been catching up with lore since I left off and I have to say that Crow doesn’t feel like Hunter Vanguard. He still feels like a fledgling guardian still getting his bearings. (May be a bias viewpoint considering I’m an Exo Hunter since D1)
As a warlock who has dealt with too many hunters, they are scouts by nature and glory collectors by choice. It’s funny how that choice overcomes their nature in a blink.

I don't think the hunter vanguard will ever transition peacefully and that's only due to the drifter and his apt phrasing of "So go out on your own terms with a gun in your hand and loot in your pockets" Almost every hunter vanguard we know that died went out in their own way.
All Crow said was that he would pick up some of Cayde’s old patrols and try to organize the hunters, but he still isn’t the hunter vanguard and I personally hope he never becomes one.
I think the pattern comes with the unwillingness to accept the role. With adventure comes risk, and that is the life of a hunter.

just from sheer badassery and talent with leading I think it somewhat likely that at one point or another Jaren Ward (original owner of TLW for those that don't know) could've been a hunter vanguard. If not, he'd have made a damn good one.

I feel like the reason the hunter vanguard dies or goes missing has to do with Tallulah or Caliban unknowingly making a wish that the ahamkara granted as Tallulah was eaten

As a hunter main. I have a feeling that we would all prefer to die on the hunt or on an adventure. Rather than wither away behind a desk or "retire".
So to those that would assume it'll be Crow; that's a fair assumption, as Crow has been getting a lot of attention since his appearance, and we've seen him slowly redeeming himself for Uldren's actions over time.
However, it would make very little sense for Crow to be a Hunter Vanguard, at least at the current moment. Crow has very little skill or experience as a Hunter or even as a true and proper Guardian, and it's a proven fact in the lore that Crow does NOT have Uldren's skills or expertise.
He has memories from his past life, but I assume them to be similar to when we restore Savathun's memories. Enough to go off of, a clear enough picture to figure out the details, but not a play-by-play analysis or anything. Because while Uldren could dismantle a Vex Minotaur with his barehands, Crow gets steamrolled.
So. The issue here is how is Crow supposed to watch over everyone? How is Crow supposed to have everyone else's back if he still hasn't figured out how to watch his own properly?
It's more likely to be An Bray. Ana wants to stay and work on Rasputin at the Tower anyway, so being a Vanguard would make sense for her. Plus she's experienced, she's been around since the Dark Ages and she was skilled enough to fake her own death to veteran Guardians. Add that to the whole operation she ran on Mars, plus all the years she spent alone, unseen, unheard? Sounds like a solid Hunter Vanguard to me.
There's at least one point in lore (I think a book from Season of Arrivals?) where Ana and Zavala talk about it. i have my speculations on the next hunter vanguard. Caydes hunter dare was his killer gets his place but since that being uldren now crow, i don’t think he’d do it as he’s a completely different person now and his pasts haunts him. having to be in the man he murdereds place may be bad for him. during the red war cause as hawthorn sort of made a bond so maybe the rules would be changed for her. she is sort of hunter like?
