I'd recommend watching a full decent playthrough instead of just the cutscenes if not playing it. There are many clues in the interaction scenes too (calls and chats), not only in the cutscenes. And understanding the world is improved if the player reads through the lore. Mapocolops comes to mind as such a player; very good on the bike, doesn't mess up much, takes time speculating on where this is going (the most fun for me as a watcher), and being a huge fan of Kojima and his style of Kafkaesque storytelling (the scanner is called an Odradek ffs 😆) is a bonus - something that may throw off some players.
However... And this is a big one... No player I've seen - and I've seen 40+ let's plays and counting - have been able to fully decipher the story. They still have a complete and satisfactory conclusion to the game - that's just sheer brilliance imo. There are loads of clues in every cutscene and every angle and every gesture that players will not notice, so the not so obvious 4th wall breaking (paraphrased) line: "...to make sense of it all, to connect the dots, you need time, you need perspective..." makes sooooooo much more sense once you start noticing the clues. Nobody will if they only play/watch through it once. Two mysteries are present throughout the game, one of them many players will be able to go "called it", the second is much more vague and require a lot of explanation/exposition through cutscenes throughout the ending. But there is a 3rd hidden mystery in there, and the player is never "given" this mystery, you have to detect/discover/question it yourself, but there are tons of clues given for it.
Also, I recommend watching YongYea's Spoiler Free Review of Death Stranding if considering playing it. It's slow paced, especially the first 10 hours or so in the tutorial area, it's Kojima level crazy weird, it's Kafkaesque in story delivery, it has a message to tell, highly philosophical, brilliant cinematography used to perfection, and relies heavily on metaphors (one of the lines are literally "I brought you a metaphor" - not even joking). Trailers are safe if you only intend to watch the game. If going for actual playing, I'd stay away from a recent watch as they are kinda heavy on the spoilers.

But if they just watch the cutscenes, then they will not know about so much details that were in the Mails and the awesome Soundtracks.

I'm playing Death Stranding right now, and i honestly expected to be pushing through the gameplay to get to the story, but I'm finding the gameplay super engaging. Imo they found a way to make playing a delivery man wildly, unexpectedly fun

Really recommend you guys to watch all of the cutscenes instead of playing it. I mean, i won't say that you shouldn't play it, but since you guys would have a busy schedules with other reactions and lot of games to play through, watching the cutscenes itself is pretty fine. But playing the game is one of the most unique experience you guys will ever had, and as like the reviews said, the gameplay is not for everyone. Some would find it boring, some would find it relaxing, this and that.
The game is gorgeous, not because of the environment itself but also how amazing Kojima cinematography is, watching the cutscenes will be like you watching a very long movie. And if you knew Kojima, he really loves making a really long cutscene 😄
The story might be confusing at the start, but as the game progresses, you will learn pieces by pieces to understand what is the truth of the Death Stranding is. The most captivating thing about the story is not about the mysteries of the world itself, but each characters have its own interesting stories that some might hit you in personal way.
The story is a well written letter from Kojima to all of us, both for a warning and an appreciation, as society and humanity.

Personally I'd say that Death Stranding is a game worth playing but at the same time I can't speak for everyone and their personal preference. It really depends on what type of gamers you both are and what you personally expect from a game. The story of Death Stranding is gripping, cinametic, intense, mind bending and brain melting. The game kept making myself question the lore and logic of the whole story and I think that was very impressive. The best way I can put it is that Death Stranding feels like an incredible Science Fiction movie in the form of a game that leaves you wanting more. I once mentioned the same thing about Mass Effect to you guys. I'm still hoping that you'll dive into that game eventually haha.
But on the other side. Death Stranding also requires A LOT of patience and investment in order to have the best possible experience. It isn't a game you can just cruise through and come out satisfied. At least not in my opinion.

    • @DefinitelyNotDefinitiveGames

Hmm. That’s the thing, if we will have enough time to fully devote ourselves to it 🤔 and we do want to play Mass Effect trilogy 😀

The way I made a sibling "Play" Death Stranding was by playing the first 2 hours, which basically show you how the gameplay loop works. You get to know how the game feels and how you'll be spending the next 70 hours of your playthorugh. I'd recommend that after playing for a bit, you could watch the cutscenes on UA-cam, not judging!
I really like DS, it's a very relaxing game, perfect for a livestream, since you can read chat without a problem, but sometimes you spend HOURS waiting for the story to continue, or simply don't wanna walk all the way back to the beginning to upgrade your boots to level 2.
TLDR: Love the game, but its TOO long, watch the cutscenes, they are a looong movie in it of themselves!

Nobody can really tell you if you'll like Death Stranding as there is nothing like it. People who dislike it will label it a "walking sim" and it's fans think it's the most engaging experience you can have. On release it sparked a huge debate about whether games being "fun" is even the most important thing because how do you quantify it. Ultimately I didn't like it and couldn't finish it, but I don't regret my time playing it and I support the idea behind Death Stranding over the usual deluge of games churned out that focus test the most broad systems like they're made by AI rather than humans with actual ideas and vision (Ubisoft/EA cough). It's the kind of AAA game only someone like Kojima can make now that he's free of publisher oversight.

Better to make a game or piece of entertainment that some people absolutely love but might not appeal to wider audience, than to just make something that is “OK” for everyone. Feels like we would get frustrated with gameplay but the story is something that interests us 🤔🤗

Here is an opinion that might help you decide whether you should play this game or not:
It is a "hiking" simulator and not a "walking" simulator, sprinkled with some action and infrastructure building/sharing.
Remember when you hiked a mountain and you had to decide what gear you would carry in your bag? A flashlight? A rope? Snacks? Drink? Clothes? This game emulates that preparation.
Remember when you had to look at a map and decide which route you would pick, and later realize how difficult the terrain is, so you would have to improvise? This game emulates that experience.
Remember when you felt glad you found a makeshift shelter when it was pouring rain and cold in the middle of the mountain? Remember when you felt glad there was a rudimentary bridge that would save hours of walking to get from point A to B? This game emulates that feeling.
Remember when you started to look at the landscape in awe while you hiked listening to a cool song? This games emulates that too.
It is all that mixed with a little bit of suspense, sci-fi, and action. Hope it helps.

Death Stranding is very dear to my heart so I'm very excited for DS2 (oh and it's JUST been announced there'S gonna be a movie and boy am I fucking hype). It's a very special game, you either connect with it or you don't, you love it or you hate it, never really seen anyone say they thought DS was just okay. I never found it super suitable for streaming because what you essentially do between awesome cutscenes is walk lol If you did a playthrough of it I would watch the fuck out of it, I love watching people react to it.

Death Stranding is the digital equivalent of doing hiking and volunteering at the same time, it's ardous, sometimes challenging, requieres lots of patience and in the end it felt the effort was well worth it. But if putting 60 hours on it doesn't sound appeling I'd recomend watching a good cinematics compilation before a lore video as It would spoil surprises that are cooler as a movie.

I’d recommend playing the game, it’s gonna be a brutal and slow start at first. Maybe lower the difficulty and just enjoy the game for what it is, the walking may sound annoying at first but as someone who plays all action RPG and shooters, even I enjoyed the gameplay. After the first couple episodes it really picks up and makes u want to find out what happens next. I believe there’s 15 episodes total in the game, u decide how u want to make each delivery and it’s always interesting to see how each player handles it differently. Also the game isn’t all on foot, I believe after episode 3 you get a bike, later on you get weapons and trucks as well, don’t worry you’re not just a delivery man the entire game.

It is a pretty and stylish game, but most of the experience is just cinematics, or some dialogue here or there to set the mood... The best video that covers everything is almost 12 Hours long though, so at that point just seems best to play it yourself.
