    This infomercial is hosted by actor Michael Fairman, who left the cult of Scientology in 2011 and has since been declared a 'Suppressive Person'.

      It is famous though. Scientology isn’t like this super prominent organization in terms of every day people. But people of new capital in Florida or California, the kind of people getting botox, and hair transplants, have a certain attraction to the “just win”, capitalist attitude of Scientology

      @@infjintegrityvsnarcissism7295Even better, Dianetics was a best seller in 1951. Hubbard toured the country talking to middle-class whites at universities, and small theatres.
      He was legitimately famous, and the book was organically popular, and successful, long before Scientology.

      @justinturner8278 Рік тому +1

      So, they have an argument. “The mind”, is pretty open to interpretation, they aren’t claiming it’s a psychology or psychiatric book. Plus they’ve bought entire runs of their own book, and forced their members to buy multiple copies. It’s a claim I think they could back up in court if they had to. It’s bs, but advertising is a funny thing.

    • @kiterafrey
      @kiterafrey Рік тому

      @@justinturner8278 I agree mind is super vague, but in past rulings purchases made by the publisher, author, or authorial institutions are ruled out as non sales, since they aren't external customers. So they'd probably still win on mind being vague, but past precedence wouldn't be on their side if for best selling. Though honestly the FTC are much more involved in direct sales ads today than they were in 95. My statement was more of a frustrated thought and righteous anger than an actual legal review of their false advertising.

    • @fshoaps
      @fshoaps 3 дні тому

      It’s been selling since 1951, and it started its life as a national best seller, but yeah, it’s clearly a misrepresentation. But the book wasn’t obscure. There’s a reason you are here, and aware of Scientology and it’s the unique popularity of Dianetics.

      @@fshoaps Technically, I'm here because my first degree is in Cultural Anthro focused on religions & cults and I was fascinated by the cult aspects of survivor's stories. I didn't even learn about the dianetics (god Samsung auto correct refuses to spell that word) until after finding survivor's stories.
      But, from the mental aspects on my degree, repetition is a key component in retraining the brain, both for good habits and brainwashing, so I don't doubt the system works to retrain people, however I don't agree with how it ended up being used.
