    As a gas mask guy its pretty tragic how little attention they get given how important they were. Not just in reenactment either but in film, video games, and other media.

      Right, I really love ww1 gas masks and I'm trying to get my hands on one for months.
      I really like the ww1 ones not only cause of the aspect, but anout the history beacuse I always think about who could have wore that gas mask

    I think the reproduction gm17/18’s are made out of suede leather while the real ones are made from sheep skin because sheep panted and if they chose an animal that sweated there would be pores in the leather that the gas can seep through. I never really liked the repro gm17, I thought the dimensions and the colour was off.
    I really enjoy your videos, especially the ones about gas masks because I think they are always portrayed wrong in media, even battlefield 1 uses British ww2 masks. Keep up the great work.

    Fantastic video, been curious on the quality of the GM17 repro for a while now and this did a great job of explaining it. From the video, it looks like it's a functional repro, but not a good repro. It certainly looks like the mask, and it'll do fine for reenactment, but it's really not as good as it could, or should be.

    I made my own custom gas mask from a cotton pillow I sewed together and used cotton webbing for the straps. I was going for that pre-gas mask period in ww1 with the urine cloth masks

    Hey I just found your channel recently, and as a history-buff-in-training I'm really loving the content! It's both interesting and informative.
    That being said, I'm currently planning to try put together my own Imperial German kit. I watched your video about the uniform and you listed some places to get good quality tunics, but I'm struggling to find a helmet for myself. I'm looking for a good quality M16/M17 Stahlhelm which ships internationally to South Africa (Where I am) that's also one or two sizes too big, as per your recommendation, but that's where the trouble comes in. I have quite a phat head, measuring about 61cm (Which is +-21 inches, I believe) in diameter, and most helmets' liners I've seen go up to about 60cm, so any recommendations for vendors for originals or repros would be much appreciated!
    I know that it doesn't exactly pertain to the topic of this video, but I thought you'd be the right guy to ask, at least for now.
    Thanks in advance and keep up the good work!

    • @Wolfof1918
      @Wolfof1918  3 роки тому +1

      For your stahlhelm you’ll want a size 68, which are hard to come by (it’s one of the more rare sizes when referring to originals.)
      I’m not sure where to go to find anyone who’ll ship them to South Africa, but if you’re looking for a repro it shouldn’t be too difficult (nestof ships to the US, not sure why the wouldn’t be able to SA)
      As for liners, one will pop up eventually, it’ll just take some time.
      Good reference for stahlhelm sizes: www.reddickmilitaria.com/articles/german-helmet-sizes-and-liners.php
      Some say the size 70 is for a 61 cm head, but those are extremely rare so I wouldn’t recommend using them at all.

      @@Wolfof1918 Thanks a lot for the info! It'll really come in handy as someone who's still getting into the hobby, so I really appreciate it, and I'll be sure to keep my eyes peeled.
      I think I'll try do what I've seen others do, which is to get an original shell and try fit it with a repro liner, which shouldn't be too difficult to do, I hope.

    • @Wolfof1918
      @Wolfof1918  Рік тому +1

      I'm not too sure, my assumption is yes but there isn't a lot of information about field care for the m17 in English literature. It is possible your gas mask was done up right before a surrender, in a POW camp, just at the armistice, or even post war by a veteran keeping his gear in working shape

    • @Camroc37
      @Camroc37 Рік тому

      Thanks for the info, I'd think it's likely someone was keeping it greased decades after the war to keep the leather pliable as well. With all the rain, I wouldn't be surprised if soldiers were using any grease they could to keep their masks airtight and their boots water resistant.@@Wolfof1918
