We‼️actually‼️have‼️the‼️same‼️thought‼️I hate America being so indecisive and feeling so entitled among the girls (Maxon's favorite) through out the series. She hates the thought when Maxon's kissing other girls when in fact she's actually doing it with Aspen. The audacity‼️
This is why I’m here. OMG She was literally two timing them. And her entitlement 😐 a whole prince is willing to be with you and you’re literally there for the sake of trying to become his bride...and you’re making out with another man behind his back after he’s told you he loved you, like make it make sense
That’s the one thing I have a slight problem with Like she decided then she didn’t it then she did then she didn’t and then she was with aspen and kissing him hit she was doing that with Maxon and I was like 👁👄👁 hit I love the rest of it soo
I also agree her going back to aspen every single time was so annoying and frustrating and she was just stringing them both along and she should have just chosen Maxon but she kept cheating on him which was awful. ALSO she knew very well that Maxon would end the entire thing if she just told him she would choose him but she never did! It is all the way in BOOK 1 he literally says if you would just tell me you would choose me I would end it right now but because you’re unsure I still have to find a wife so the fact that she strung this along for 3 books made me hate America
I love these books, but I totally understand why people wouldn’t. Aspen makes me angry and America was sometimes stupid. Maxon is way too hopelessly in love with America. And yes, I admit, America was annoying in the One in made me want to scream. There are problems, I see them, but I love these books nonetheless.
@@jannapatty2958 I finished the second one during the last days of summer and tbh I don’t know If I want to finish the series this was very stressful to me for absolutely no reason
@@Nina-pz7ge noooo you have to, you just need closure you don’t need to buy happily ever after the heir or the crown as they are all different povs, yet I recommend you read Amberely’s tribute in happily ever after.
GIRLLL I agree with youuuu!!! Also I hated how Aspen and Lucy ended up together, like there wasn’t even an explanation of their friendship/relationship. Literally like a day before the attack Aspen was telling America that he still loved her but then he and Lucy were suddenly together 🙄
I feel like the fact that her name is America would get her in a lot of trouble with the monarchy. It would be like “You’re making a statement against our regime, your name is illegal”
These books... boy do I love these books!!! They’re such a guilty pleasure, and I don’t even usually read the last two, but I do love these books just as like, I love it and it’s great, and you can tell it’s kind of not planned, but it’s still really bad and great at the same time
they're still a guilty pleasure of mine which is why i'll never unhaul them. even though I have problems with a lot of what's in the books, I don't have it in my heart to get rid of them
The thing is that we discover throughout the books that America is the WORST candidate to be the a queen! And Kriss is the best one possible, and America is just aghhhhahsvajjabahsab she does everything to prove everyone she cannot be queen and she doesn’t frickin care! She just played with everyone’s feelings, even Aspen, she gave fake expectations to both, and that’s just soooo toxic. Maxon is so vulnerable in a way he’s never talked to a girl in a romantic way, or fall in love or even just kissed someone, so LITERALLY the first girl he meets, the one he picks, and he just falls in love so bad, because he’s never experienced something like that before. Plus wtf with aspen when she tries to be nice with him and cooks him food on the first book, like what a fragile masculinity 🙄
America wasn’t using them or toxic, but was confused and she was broken hearted. I don’t think America was bad, I think she was stubborn, Alvaro Garcia and heartbroken, that’s why she was going back to aspen even after knowing she wanted maxon, she was heartbroken too stubborn and caring to let go and confused. But that’s my opinion and I don’t think America should get all this hate.
Ximena Labourdette America was indecisive as hell when it came to Maxon and Aspen. BUT, she was perfect to be queen. As someone who’s considered to be on the lower half of the system, she’s willing to think about them more. Plus, she’s not afraid to go against the status quo and societal expectations, even as a girl with no power and influence. She’s the only one who stood up to the king when they were giving out sentences to the prisoners. She stood up for Marlee when everyone else isolated her. She knew how corrupt and unfair the system was and fought to say something about it. That’s why she got in trouble with the king in the first place. Kriss would’ve been too complacent. She wouldn’t have challenged Maxon, she would’ve agreed to anything he said. America was hella annoying and frustrating for the entirety of the second book and a good portion of the third but in the end, there was no better candidate for queen.
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Aspen just randomly getting together with America's maid, Lucy. That was popular fan theory, and it was literally so random that you know that Cass copied it from word to word. She was probably scoping out all the Goodreads threads. Also, I love it when America gives that prisoner her jewelry and says, "Go pay your debt to the king!"
Did anyone else also have a problem with the fact that literally EVERY SINGLE TIME they fought, it was resolved because of a rebel attack? Like they never really talked it out and stuff, just every time there was an attack which forced them to make up and it got really lazy at some point, I just wanted them to talk and make up at least ONCE without there being an attack.
@@han-ce7ue considering we had NO damn explanation about how maxon was not angry at America anymore for what she was doing with Aspen for like no reason, yes it was the worst decision and honestly really strange. There was a hell lot of plot holes at the end of the third book, like why is America acting strangely when she understands Kriss is a rebel when her father was one No hate, i love the books, just deceived by some points
@@mimyeko894 i swear it didn’t add up. Also how she wanted Celeste to go home, but couldn’t just simply tell Maxon “hey she ripped my dress” which he would of for sure sent her home for.
I think they were probably trying to go for the general mail walking the girl down the aisle, but honestly why didn't her mother do it😭😭😭 Like it didn't make any sense out Aspen would even have the *authority* to give America away from her family, and came across more as "She was mine but ig you can have her" and iccck 😂
Am sorry guys but in my head aspen was the hotter one and I really didn't hate him....He was in love and America was playing with his feelings.... My favorite part was wen aspen walked in wen America and max on were getting cozy... I laughed so hard
aspen isn’t actually that bad! In reality he is a great guy, even though I didn’t root for him. America takes advantage of both Aspen and Maxon which is horrible and makes me dislike her even more
I think aspen was a great guy and I liked him, but I liked maxon more, and I liked aspen only when he wasn’t with America XD. I also think America wasn’t using them, but was confused and she was broken hearted. I don’t think America was bad, I think she was stubborn, Alvaro Garcia and heartbroken, that’s why she was going back to aspen even after knowing she wanted maxon, she was heartbroken too stubborn and caring to let go and confused. Kaitlyn Norris literally thought they were all amazing and everyone had moments where they didn’t make the smartest choices but other than that I loved the books also I love eadlyn I admired her even if others hate her
@@kaitlynnorris4975 yeah i really didn't hate her.....i just didn't like her indecision a little bit. It happens in real life alot and i can relate. Plus i also like Maxon better.....but i didn't like all the ignorance aspen was getting....all in all i was just trying to bring out a point.
I also had struggles reading the series. I remember that I wasn't able to relate to America in any way cause she never knew what she actually wanted. And I felt so sorry for Aspen and Maxon cause she kind of played with the feelings of both at the same time cause she just was unable to let one of them go. I read it anyway cause I like Novels about kingdoms that aren't fantasy. But yeah the main plot points just broke in with no context without building up through the entire story. The last 2 books about their dauther were also as obvious and non-context as the first 3. But curious about the Netflix-show they will make and I hope they do it a little better.
I was so excited when they announced the tv adaptation I decided to re-read the books because middle school me was OBSESSED. I agree with all of your points after reading them, including the last two with her daughter (which were awful don’t get me started). I didn’t realize the author just sat down and wrote everything without thinking and it defiantly makes sense. I felt like these books could’ve been condensed into two books. The second book had me so frustrated because it felt like she was flipping back and forth between aspen and maxon every other page. Aspen and Lily were out of no where and I was so annoyed America didn’t root for Anna like she promised she would? And Kara Cass just casually KILLS ANNA? Are you kidding? Celeste’s death had me devastated out of everyone. I hope they add more to the world building and do a take on the rebels to make them fit in with the story rather than having it randomly placed in.
I literally can't get over how amazing these books are. The plot, the twists. So many emotions, one of the only books I actually cried on. I cried I believe 3 times during the series. The love triangle was great, and the characters were amazing. The best one in my opinion was "The One" just because it was like really over the top. If you've never read these books, you NEED to I just love it so much!!!!
I couldn’t cry during these lol. I’ve read so many amazing books that this book just didn’t move me. It reminds me of how I wrote at 13. Just not great at all
ok i need to rant. so i finished the series today and honestly i just felt so confused. like some aspects of the plot were so weird? you can call them plot twists but they just didn't make sense. it was more for the third book too, like why did the author kill off celeste? or lucy and aspen being together with no context? anne disappearing? the first book was definitely engaging but i lost interest as the books went along. it was so frustrating to read because america just...ugh. the whole series felt like a fanfiction on wattpad. but anyways🥰
And that’s why the Netflix Adaptation could maybe get it right. They have all the plot points to fix the story and hint at things from the start. Like as long as they stay pretty faithful to the books the movie could be sooo good
@@hope.0oo She was that bitch who was ruining everyone's lives but had a rly good redemption, but got shot in the end by the rebels at the end of book 3
Not only is the Capitol Report guy a carbon copy of Ceaser, it says that Maxon has blond hair and brown eyes (Peeta) and Aspen has light eyes and brown hair (Gale). AND May is like exactly like Prim. Like, even their names are similar. Then, she chooses Maxon (Peeta). The similarities are EVERYWHERE.
Dude. I want someone to talk to about the fact that the king, queen, Anne, and Celeste just like died.... I’m still trying to make sense of it all. They literally just throw it in at the wedding that Anne is gone.
I love this series so much , It does get frustrating especially when America took every wrong decision and she wouldn’t admit her feelings to Maxon !! Not gonna lie every time I re read it I think must of the stuff that happens is stupid lol but I still love this series so much and re-read it every year ! My favorite book is The one too . I’m so excited for the movie !!
What I remember the most after I reread it and felt weird is the rushed ending.. Maxon was hating America cause she eventually doesn't tell the truth but get caught instead. So he changed his decision to chose Kriss instead but then when the rebels attacked and he got shot he says sorry that he's destroying their chance together( I guess, i kinda forget but that's the context) and he also said you can break my heart cause it's yours. I would've prefer him saying I am still mad but seeing the gun started to pointing towards you I was afraid that I could lose you forever. Maxon forgive America's cheating way too fast .. Also the queen and king died was too convenient.. I rather see maxon and america fight together against the king so they can be together than him died. And this sudden kiss scene between aspen and lucy scene.. because in the story aspen's actions were about getting America back and fight for her and there's no suggestion in behavior he kinda over America untill he says that to America. I feel that is weird. Maybe the story behind it in the novella (haven't reread it) but still it's so sudden. If america feels weird behavior when met in front of america, maybe that'll made sense Well, those just my opinion. I still love the book because it makes me feel like in rollercoaster of emotion and the excitement when america and maxon meet😚
i think when u we’re talking about the inappropriate punishments of the book you disregarded the fact that they told the girls there were punishments because they were now “property”. you also forgot that aspens brother got whipped for stealing. i think the whole book seems very silly and whimsical like the country until you read more. the way maxons dad took advantaged him and abused him even when he was royalty was like how they took advantage of they’re people and forced them to look the other way. i feel as if this book is a lot about america and maxon realizing how corrupt and broken the country is.
I like the last two, but I liked America’s story better, and I hated the end of the last one. I wish she kept it as a kingdom. However I understand why she didn’t.
Kaitlyn Norris Spoilers? I really don’t want to read those books. Read the first chapter of the 4th book and promptly returned it because I couldn’t deal with the fact that their daughter is more annoying than an indecisive America.
Kaitlyn Norris Didn’t know if you understand my comment but I was kind of asking for spoilers. I don’t want to go through the pain of reading the books myself😅
ok I'm two years late to this video but I just fell into the The Selection wormhole again nearly a decade after I first read the books and I need an outlet after I've reread the series omg 😭 I completely agree with ur comments like especially the world-building!! it frustrated me so much because there is sooo much potential for great political commentary in the books and America is supposed to be smart with strong opinions and yet whenever the book gets political, it just scratches the surface and doesn't really commit to it ????? which could have been the key to flesh out Maxon's character more. To me he was honestly the most interesting character aside from Celeste like I think in The Elite there was plenty of hinted subtext about his character that in the end was never truly explored. Kiera really did him a disservice by just writing him off as some hot and sensible prince instead of delving into those observations by America (like how America notices he's never dressed down even during the middle of the night as if he's constantly on edge or how he seems to be so lonely and naive, his love for photography, etc.)
You made me realize even more how America is so indecisive, I remember reading for the first time like waiting for the book to start bc I did not like the part with Aspen at all! I think if u haven't already read and reviewed the Red queen its a favorite of mine and I would love for that to be a movie rather than the selection but I adore the selection 2
I have a guilty pleasure for absolutely terrible teen romance books. I read this series in its entirety over the course of two days. It's AWFUL, don't get me wrong, but god I love it 😂(totally skipped the second half of the second book after skipping ahead to the ending though)
I love the whole series but I’m 11 (however I read twilight and the hunger games and am a very advance reader) also the series about her children is TRAaAsHHhHHh
@@sweetdreamz9282 if you like twilight and the hunger games I would absolutely recommend City of Ember, the Percy Jackson series (even if you've read it already, its always worth another read), the House of Night series by PC Cast, and the Vladamir Todd series. I read a lot when I was your age as well and those were some of my favorites. Also The Hobbit and the Chronicles of Narnia if you like fantasy. Keep at it!
TheHedgehogGiraffe Honestly when I read the Elite for the first time, I could not have been more frustrated and annoyed at America. Like, girl could decide who she wanted to be with and it was so annoying because she was basically leading both of them on. So indecisive. But once The One happened, it got a little better, especially in the second half. And I bought a special set that came with an extra epilogue which made everything worth it. Honestly it’s 10x better than the second half of the Elite and first half of the One combined, and it isn’t even 10 pages.
Here’s my opinion on America: I think America wasn’t using maxon I r aspen or bipolar or whatever, but was confused and she was broken hearted. I don’t think America was bad, I think she was stubborn, also confused and heartbroken, that’s why she was going back to aspen even after knowing she wanted maxon, she was heartbroken too stubborn and caring to let go and confused. But that’s my opinion and I don’t think America should get all this hate.
actually the pin wasnt the only thing that was foreshadowed. kiera cass also mentioned the way americas father wrote his “A”s and they looked like the north star throughout the entire series
Can we also talk about how ASPEN walked America down the aisle at her wedding..idk about y'all but if my husband wanted his ex-girlfriend to walk him down the aisle at my wedding after he cheated on me with her for two books I would've chocked. Also the insta love romance between Aspen and Lucy (I think??) was too convenient and I just did not care about it at all except for the fact that Lucy deserved better than Aspens annoying ass
I decided to pull an all-nighter reading these books because... I must hate myself. I read these in middle school and remember liking the books but hating America and when I read the first book again I was like??? Why did I hate her again? She really wasn’t too bad in the first book but as soon as I started the second one I remembered. She devolved so quickly.
When I was in 7th grade The Selection was my favorite book series too. But I had issues with America FOR MOST OF THE SERIES. Idk why I loved it while I had SOO many issues with America and Aspen.
I will always love these books because they are nostalgic for me. Their quality isn’t amazing and I acknowledge that, however these were some of the books that really got me into reading. Reading them is like rewatching my childhood favorite shows. Even if they kinda suck I can’t help but love them
Pacing - meh Characters - meh Plot - whatever I still read the first 3 books because I just wanted to know how it ends but totally struggled to read this series
I had the same experience as you; I read the books when I was 15 and LOVED, I was obsessed. So I tried to read again now, and I'm 22 years old and I CRINGED SO MUCH. I still like the books bc the series are nostalgic to me, but they are increbible bad written and the plot twists were so bad. I was so shocked noticing the books were shit hahaha I read many fanfics that were way better and more intelligent than the books, so I got SO disappointed. The end of 'The One' was so stupid that I nervously laughed while reading it. (sorry the bad eng)
The point of the punishment system being so unfair is on purpose to show how unfair the world is that they’re living in so if punishment was completely equal it would have taken away from the fact depending on what caste your in depends on how you get treated. :)))
This had me crying laughing, I totally agree with it all. It’s a light hearted read I decided I would reread trying to get over a book hunger, so dead at the writing just it was enjoyable 😂
I loved the series don’t get me started but I think that America was really indecisive and she couldn’t choose between Maxon and Aspen and I hated how whenever she would have an argument with Maxon she would go to Aspen or it would be the other way around but she could never really choose until the last book
The two after (called the heir and the crown) about their daughter is SO GOOD. I’m obsessed with the series and was dedicated to the three books but I decided to try the last two books and struggled for a little but I finished them and OMG they’re sooo good, almost as good as the main three!!! You should definitely at least give it a try and not just judge it because it’s not about the OG characters!
I still prefer the original series but although I don’t like Eadlyns personality at least she is consistent and there is character development. America’s character changed personalities all the time 😑
This is an old video BUT OHMYGOD YES. When I read it few years ago I loved it, was obssesed, and now I cant even bring to reread them because America gives me anxiety. She uses Aspen as a backdoor, Aspen is kinda a bitch to Lucy, Maxon is the only character I still kinda like but I agree, we need more scenes of him taking the control. I didnt know that Kiera didnt prepare the plot beforehand, but ohmygod, it all makes sence now. But honestly speaking, I feel like making it a netflix show kinda suits it. All the cliches? PURE GOLD FOR A NETFLIX. Will I watch it anyway? Hell yea I will. I read that its going to be a movie, so maybe that will help making it all seem like it has the same pace. //sorry for any errors, english is my second language
Actually The Heir and The Crown (the spin off books about their kids) are arguably better. At least in my opinion, it’s a much more interesting story and yes Eadlyn can be annoying at times, but there’s actual character progression
Still my favorite series. Although I agree on your characterizations, this series made me feel every emotion. I lost literal sleep. The ending plot twist made up for the typical story line. I’ve read the entire thing 5 times and still love it just as much.
as someone who adored this series in like sixth grade and hasn't read it since, i am fully willing to 100% back up everything you just said despite remembering very little of it also celeste is a queen edit: p u n u n i n t e n t i o n a l
Omg I'm so glad to finally see a critical review of these books on YT. I read them all, but mostly because I just wanted to get to the end. But ngl my brain kept shutting off in the second book. It was so effing repetitive. I wanted to strangle America. And as for world building, I wasn't entirely sure that the rebels were actually bad. I mean, why am I supposed to care more about a super rich royal family than poor people who have no power? Also, there's just not enough information about that whole situation to make a real assessment. Maybe it's easier to find fault with these books if you've only read them as an adult.
I think out of all the novellas the one about Queen Amberley was my favorite, it was interesting to see another Selection and get more info on the King and Queen 😅
honestly this book series is still my favorite thing in the world even if its not credible. its fun to jump into a different world where things are better and you need to read the second series
I read this series recently, and stumbled upon this video after stepping into a rabbit hole of Selection videos: I clicked on this, determined to defend the characters yet... *you're right- you're right in every way possible*
if i’ll ever have a book review yt channel, it will be because of this woman that inspired me. she literally made the whole video like a highschool tea that everyone will listen to 😂
I hate love triangles so much! I find them completely unbearable and often just give up on a book the second I sniff a love triangle coming. However, somehow, I managed to give myself selective amnesia while reading this series so I plainly ignored Aspen’s entire character. That really worked for me. God damn I really wish I had retained that skill for 2020-21😭😭😭
well I pretty agree with you about the other things and i both did what you did...I did reread (1st read it when I was at 2nd grade) it and yeah the phasing was quite fast on the last parts but America being indecisive and bipolar(?) was maybe natural because she was only 17.I'm 18 and you know, hormonal thingy about teenagers??? maybe that as the very reason why she and the others might have acted that way...but overall,I think the book was fine enough, maybe i'll reread again when i'm 22 or something to see if i'll get a different perspective about the book...
I read this book when I was very depressed and I remember enjoying it a lot, but for the life of me, I can't remember anything about it at all. I'm remembering things slightly as you talk about them, but I couldn't even remember how the story finished.
This novel is clearly a dystopian novel because it "explore(s) social and political structure." I'm not saying it is as dystopian as the hunger games but it should still be considered dystopian. Ik you said the tone isn't dystopian, but I feel like you might as well being saying novel isn't. Sorry if I'm taking your words out of context. Anyways, while this is the bachelor, it is the bachelor with a corrupt leader, monarchy, caste system, and rebellion. While does feel modern day, these are things we have seen throughout history, just like caning.
I love that series, it’s so entertaining! But lol those two characters do kinda remind me of Cal and Kilorn. I love the character development of Maven and his relationship with Mare! It’s so interesting to read with this intense abusive thing going on.
When I was reading them, to me they were like a dumpster fire, but one that I couldn't look away from. Like I knew it was bad even at the time, but something kept compelling me to keep reading even though I hated almost everyone there. I even read the sequels with her kids and I honestly liked it more, probably because Cass was at least a smidgeon more willing to acknowledge her MC was a flawed person. Also she was willing to admit gay people exist. It also got me with the endgame romance cause I am a sucker for all that.
Honestly I kinda get America tho she was young 16 she’s going to childish, insecure and indecisive. So I feel like after the whole aspen thing when he left her she had a fear of being left so easily..she was confused ..she liked Maxon but still had love for aspen..which is why she went back and forth between them. She was just a confused and scared teenager. I know that that doesn’t make it right but when she finally realizes who she truly loves. And she doesn’t feel worthy of being a queen so she’s literally scared of the crown. She loves Maxon but the crown would push her away..She also realizes that she’s been using aspen as a 2ndchoice in case Maxon didn’t go for her because she was so insecure. Her thought process was always comparing herself to orders she truly believed she wasn’t worthy of someone like Maxon or being queen/princess She believed that her caste was what made her and Maxon helped her realize that her caste wasn’t what made her HER. What she didn’t do was right but in a way understandable bcs of all the emotions..and idk if I am mistaking but she stops things w/aspen after she realizes who she loves like she still talks to him but doesn’t actually cheat. The series was a rollercoaster but we get to see America find actual love and she herself worthy and as a person not a caste.
They are really bad books but when I was 14 I loved them ok 😭😭😭 let me just pretend and remember the nostalgia of how good they were and reading them at 1am when I was supposed to be asleep 😂😂
BookishOASIS you were right 😂 I’m reading the second book over now and every two seconds she’s crying like what is going on? What is up with all these tears 😭
Lucinda Bloomfield no you won’t regret it 😂😂 I only have good memories of reading the books but read them again when you’re 21 and you’ll see the writing isn’t the best but it’s still an exciting YA book 😂
personally, i understand why america needed time because she was in love with aspen for two years and it's not easy to just stop loving someone you had such strong feelings for. although, during the elite, it started to get frustrating because i feel like maxon kept proving his love to her and she just kept shutting him down. i'm honestly surprised she lasted as long as she did. i will say though, i wish we had more moments between her and maxon, i felt like they were only ever together during rebel attacks and that got so annoying. we just never got any...fluff with them. all the fluff went to aspen, and i HATED him because he wouldn't let america MOVE ON. and if he truly loved her, he would've noticed that she started falling for maxon and taken a step back. also, it does constantly throw me into distress knowing that if the rebel attack hadn't happened at the end of "The One", maxon would've picked kriss. i have nothing against their relationship...but, she was just the sensible option.
What I’ve learned about this book is you can’t look too closely at it and if you do you will never look at it the same. But if you don’t you will love it.
Probably good idea of you to not read The heir and The crown. When I was younger, i loved these two more than the original series, because it did the things i was wondering about in the original series. Like "But what if the prince falls for someone else before their selection? What if that happens during?", "What if the royal didn't want a relationship" and "But what if two candidates fell for each other" Now that I'm older I realized that it probably answers these questions because Kiera Cass was constantly asked about it, not because she herself came up with that. And she came up with the worst possible solutions.
Okay, I just read the selection and was not impressed with the writing. It actually made me laugh it was so bad. BUT I'm currently reading The Heir and The Crown, and I actually like them a lot more, though I'm not sure if thats just because Eadlyn and I are similar. Anyway, you can read them if you want;)
Celeste dying was the biggest thing I remember feeling in this series. I ended up really liking Celeste and thoughts she was the coolest. I nearly flipped a table 😭
She mentioned how the guy interviewing America is basically Caesar Flickerman. However I want to say I read somewhere that this series was, according to Kiera Cass, supposed to be a mix of the Hunger Games and the Bachelor.
The UA-cam algorithm brought me here and boy howdy do I agree with you. The Selection had a bunch of super cool ideas that was executed in a genuinely awful way, but not for lack of trying. Cass didn't seem to know what she wanted to write (worldbuilding/history was too thin for an alternate history; the plot was ill thought out; the characters are cardboard) and as a result the books suffer. I think you hit the nail on the head as to why the series didn't click with me.
guys i'm SHOOK that they are turning this series into a Netflix show omg
Well I just finished the last book, so I guess my timing was great?
I’m rereading the series
THEY'RE FUCKING WHAT I'M DEAD
I'm sure if they try to improve on the source material the fanbase will freak out
@@bonniea8189 my hope is that they will develop some of the characters and plotlines more because I think it would be really good if those issues were fixed

Omg yessssss
Right??!!!?
She still wasn't completely honest ...in the end she didn't tell they litreally made out with him 2/3times ...even after marlee
I honestly hated it

big fat tea right here
Im on the part where aspen is assigned to her AND I JUST KNOW IT WILL BE SO FUCKING ANNOYING
jiji sven Ya, I hated aspen. I was Macon all the way. Wait until you get to the sad part of the elite
This is why I’m here. OMG She was literally two timing them. And her entitlement 😐 a whole prince is willing to be with you and you’re literally there for the sake of trying to become his bride...and you’re making out with another man behind his back after he’s told you he loved you, like make it make sense
That’s the one thing I have a slight problem with
Like she decided then she didn’t it then she did then she didn’t and then she was with aspen and kissing him hit she was doing that with Maxon and I was like 👁👄👁 hit I love the rest of it soo
I also agree her going back to aspen every single time was so annoying and frustrating and she was just stringing them both along and she should have just chosen Maxon but she kept cheating on him which was awful. ALSO she knew very well that Maxon would end the entire thing if she just told him she would choose him but she never did! It is all the way in BOOK 1 he literally says if you would just tell me you would choose me I would end it right now but because you’re unsure I still have to find a wife so the fact that she strung this along for 3 books made me hate America
straight facts
I'm honestly trying to find out how they even ended up together😣 America was boring me
I swear she acted so entitled
I love these books, but I totally understand why people wouldn’t. Aspen makes me angry and America was sometimes stupid. Maxon is way too hopelessly in love with America.
And yes, I admit, America was annoying in the One in made me want to scream.
There are problems, I see them, but I love these books nonetheless.
Maxon was a SIMP

GIRLLL I agree with youuuu!!! Also I hated how Aspen and Lucy ended up together, like there wasn’t even an explanation of their friendship/relationship. Literally like a day before the attack Aspen was telling America that he still loved her but then he and Lucy were suddenly together 🙄
That's what I thought first, but read the novellas!
i think after america’s dad died he already knew he liked lucy and tried to tell america on the plane but like she wouldn’t let him talk
I'm not done with the series and I saw this 😫

The sheer fact that she's a singer in America and is called America Singer...

These books... boy do I love these books!!! They’re such a guilty pleasure, and I don’t even usually read the last two, but I do love these books just as like, I love it and it’s great, and you can tell it’s kind of not planned, but it’s still really bad and great at the same time
they're still a guilty pleasure of mine which is why i'll never unhaul them. even though I have problems with a lot of what's in the books, I don't have it in my heart to get rid of them
I literally sit in my room and read them for hours

Plus wtf with aspen when she tries to be nice with him and cooks him food on the first book, like what a fragile masculinity 🙄
tea
Where's the lie? 🤧
But that’s my opinion and I don’t think America should
get all this hate.
America was hella annoying and frustrating for the entirety of the second book and a good portion of the third but in the end, there was no better candidate for queen.
aspen was even worse to america
OMG when u mentioned Cesar from the hunger games and Gavril i could not agree w u more
they are???? the same person???? i have to laugh
IKR I was thinking the same thing
I'm surprised that you didn't mention Aspen just randomly getting together with America's maid, Lucy. That was popular fan theory, and it was literally so random that you know that Cass copied it from word to word. She was probably scoping out all the Goodreads threads. Also, I love it when America gives that prisoner her jewelry and says, "Go pay your debt to the king!"
So can we talk about the fact that the rebels constantly saved Maxon and America's relationship?🤣

why do you think aspen shouldn’t have walked her down the isle?
@@han-ce7ue considering we had NO damn explanation about how maxon was not angry at America anymore for what she was doing with Aspen for like no reason, yes it was the worst decision and honestly really strange. There was a hell lot of plot holes at the end of the third book, like why is America acting strangely when she understands Kriss is a rebel when her father was one
No hate, i love the books, just deceived by some points
Kinda
.. But I'm sure the crown thing also played in Americas mind
.. So Loving Mason for her was convenient
And I hated the fact that they just got rid of the characters they don't needed anymore by killing them. Like noo, at least make it interesting.
I agree!!
@@niceiji2957 trueeee
I crossed three times during just the elite book.
The one was really good
True I can't dismiss the good parts... Like when America was shot and almost an 8
I couldn’t cry during these lol. I’ve read so many amazing books that this book just didn’t move me. It reminds me of how I wrote at 13. Just not great at all
Don’t get me wrong I still enjoyed it and can understand why others would love it
These books were my life and still are despite the cheesy tropes and the frustrating characters. You can’t convince me otherwise.🤷🏻♀️
ok i need to rant. so i finished the series today and honestly i just felt so confused. like some aspects of the plot were so weird? you can call them plot twists but they just didn't make sense. it was more for the third book too, like why did the author kill off celeste? or lucy and aspen being together with no context? anne disappearing? the first book was definitely engaging but i lost interest as the books went along. it was so frustrating to read because america just...ugh. the whole series felt like a fanfiction on wattpad. but anyways🥰
And that’s why the Netflix Adaptation could maybe get it right. They have all the plot points to fix the story and hint at things from the start. Like as long as they stay pretty faithful to the books the movie could be sooo good
I read these books like… 5 years ago maybe? Can you remind me who Celeste is and how she died?
@@hope.0oo She was that bitch who was ruining everyone's lives but had a rly good redemption, but got shot in the end by the rebels at the end of book 3
Not only is the Capitol Report guy a carbon copy of Ceaser, it says that Maxon has blond hair and brown eyes (Peeta) and Aspen has light eyes and brown hair (Gale). AND May is like exactly like Prim. Like, even their names are similar. Then, she chooses Maxon (Peeta). The similarities are EVERYWHERE.
The books are trash but I love them 😭 they’re my guilty pleasure
If america feels weird behavior when met in front of america, maybe that'll made sense
Well, those just my opinion. I still love the book because it makes me feel like in rollercoaster of emotion and the excitement when america and maxon meet😚
I could not put the book down cause every time I did, it gave me anxiety 😂 too much drama
She took the jar brace it symbolized that she still had a part of him. It’s what the jar held. What it meant to her
i think when u we’re talking about the inappropriate punishments of the book you disregarded the fact that they told the girls there were punishments because they were now “property”. you also forgot that aspens brother got whipped for stealing. i think the whole book seems very silly and whimsical like the country until you read more. the way maxons dad took advantaged him and abused him even when he was royalty was like how they took advantage of they’re people and forced them to look the other way. i feel as if this book is a lot about america and maxon realizing how corrupt and broken the country is.
i agree w this
I love these books, except the last 2. Americas story is so much more interesting
Lena C Sorry!
nafisi tian the choice wasn’t even part of the selection
Julie Odden Eadlyn, (America’s daughter) is way more indecisive and America becomes a loved queen

I have a guilty pleasure for absolutely terrible teen romance books. I read this series in its entirety over the course of two days. It's AWFUL, don't get me wrong, but god I love it 😂(totally skipped the second half of the second book after skipping ahead to the ending though)

Okay but really can we just agree Aspen was the hot one and Maxon is the cute one???
Finally I agree with you completely
I think aspen was hot, and maxon was dreamy, hot, cute, and out of this world.
No.
I agree. She was clearly insecure because of her caste
In the 9th grade, I was partnered with a girl who read the selection for kahoot and we both were like "let's name it team maxon" and we won
actually the pin wasnt the only thing that was foreshadowed. kiera cass also mentioned the way americas father wrote his “A”s and they looked like the north star throughout the entire series
YES I barfed when Aspen walked her down the aisle that was nasty

Even if they kinda suck I can’t help but love them
Pacing - meh
Characters - meh
Plot - whatever
I still read the first 3 books because I just wanted to know how it ends but totally struggled to read this series
It is my first series I read in years. I see you are pretty knowledgeable about books. Hope to read more enjoyable series. You have a new subscriber ❤
I think you're way too harsh, but it's your opinion.
I love this series, it's one of my favourites! :)
(sorry the bad eng)
i've just re-read the last book(the one) and i cried so many times lol this book is actually so sad
The point of the punishment system being so unfair is on purpose to show how unfair the world is that they’re living in so if punishment was completely equal it would have taken away from the fact depending on what caste your in depends on how you get treated. :)))
When I read the series I liked it overall but this makes a lot of good points
“Aspen can choke” BAHAHA YESSS
This had me crying laughing, I totally agree with it all. It’s a light hearted read I decided I would reread trying to get over a book hunger, so dead at the writing just it was enjoyable 😂
I completely agree with almost everything you said about America!!
I loved the series don’t get me started but I think that America was really indecisive and she couldn’t choose between Maxon and Aspen and I hated how whenever she would have an argument with Maxon she would go to Aspen or it would be the other way around but she could never really choose until the last book
i like how she started rambling about how much the elite bothers cuz it gave me assurance that i was not the only one who felt that lol
America’s character changed personalities all the time 😑
GIRL, I AM YOU RIGHT NOW. I AM LITERALLY YOU. I ALMOST PUKED AT THE ENDING OF THE ONE. LIKE??? GIRL???
At least in my opinion, it’s a much more interesting story and yes Eadlyn can be annoying at times, but there’s actual character progression
honestly when i first read the heir i thought it was better
I love the books so much. I reread them this week and the only problem was how repetitive stuff was.
Still my favorite series. Although I agree on your characterizations, this series made me feel every emotion. I lost literal sleep. The ending plot twist made up for the typical story line. I’ve read the entire thing 5 times and still love it just as much.
as someone who adored this series in like sixth grade and hasn't read it since, i am fully willing to 100% back up everything you just said despite remembering very little of it also celeste is a queen
edit: p u n u n i n t e n t i o n a l
Omg I'm so glad to finally see a critical review of these books on YT. I read them all, but mostly because I just wanted to get to the end. But ngl my brain kept shutting off in the second book. It was so effing repetitive. I wanted to strangle America.
And as for world building, I wasn't entirely sure that the rebels were actually bad. I mean, why am I supposed to care more about a super rich royal family than poor people who have no power? Also, there's just not enough information about that whole situation to make a real assessment. Maybe it's easier to find fault with these books if you've only read them as an adult.
I think out of all the novellas the one about Queen Amberley was my favorite, it was interesting to see another Selection and get more info on the King and Queen 😅
honestly this book series is still my favorite thing in the world even if its not credible. its fun to jump into a different world where things are better and you need to read the second series
the bit at the beginning with your dog made my day. Frodo is very cute. love the vid
In the first book, she mentions in the letter back from her family that her dad signs his name weird.
You’re hurting my heart stop ✋
you're so right about Maxon's first scene not feeling like him, that always felt so weird and off to me and I didn't know why
The books about her daughter are actually really good!!
sorry but they were actual trash
I read this series recently, and stumbled upon this video after stepping into a rabbit hole of Selection videos: I clicked on this, determined to defend the characters yet...
*you're right- you're right in every way possible*
I’m not saying they’re a work of art. But I love The Selection. UwU
if i’ll ever have a book review yt channel, it will be because of this woman that inspired me. she literally made the whole video like a highschool tea that everyone will listen to 😂
I hate love triangles so much!

Bruh when I tell you when Maxon make out with Celeste and Maxon explained America that he did that because he was frustrated like WHAT
I read this book when I was very depressed and I remember enjoying it a lot, but for the life of me, I can't remember anything about it at all. I'm remembering things slightly as you talk about them, but I couldn't even remember how the story finished.
You know I reed once that depression can cause lose memory
I love this series! You can’t change my mind!! LOL
I keep confusing Maxon and Aspen with Cal and Kilorn from Red Queen lol
Unpopular opinion: Celeste is the best character
I actually liked her character :)
They are really bad books but when I was 14 I loved them ok 😭😭😭 let me just pretend and remember the nostalgia of how good they were and reading them at 1am when I was supposed to be asleep 😂😂
lmao me I will always have a special place in my heart for these no matter what
BookishOASIS you were right 😂 I’m reading the second book over now and every two seconds she’s crying like what is going on? What is up with all these tears 😭
Lucinda Bloomfield no you won’t regret it 😂😂 I only have good memories of reading the books but read them again when you’re 21 and you’ll see the writing isn’t the best but it’s still an exciting YA book 😂
I personally enjoyed the series but I agree w like everything u said lollll
Gurl, I just finished rereading my favourite childhood series, was sooooo frustrated with America! You literally spoke for me in this video>
If I start talking about this book again, I'll never stop, so I won't start XD
These books are still my favorite and nothing will ever change that(even tho they get frustrating at times)❤
the first part of the series is really good!!!! but i just finished the second part of the series and there are so many plot twists and i LOVE IT!!!!
personally, i understand why america needed time because she was in love with aspen for two years and it's not easy to just stop loving someone you had such strong feelings for. although, during the elite, it started to get frustrating because i feel like maxon kept proving his love to her and she just kept shutting him down. i'm honestly surprised she lasted as long as she did. i will say though, i wish we had more moments between her and maxon, i felt like they were only ever together during rebel attacks and that got so annoying. we just never got any...fluff with them. all the fluff went to aspen, and i HATED him because he wouldn't let america MOVE ON. and if he truly loved her, he would've noticed that she started falling for maxon and taken a step back. also, it does constantly throw me into distress knowing that if the rebel attack hadn't happened at the end of "The One", maxon would've picked kriss. i have nothing against their relationship...but, she was just the sensible option.
"Aspen can choke💀"😂
What I’ve learned about this book is you can’t look too closely at it and if you do you will never look at it the same. But if you don’t you will love it.
very much agree
Probably good idea of you to not read The heir and The crown.
When I was younger, i loved these two more than the original series, because it did the things i was wondering about in the original series. Like "But what if the prince falls for someone else before their selection? What if that happens during?", "What if the royal didn't want a relationship" and "But what if two candidates fell for each other"
Now that I'm older I realized that it probably answers these questions because Kiera Cass was constantly asked about it, not because she herself came up with that.
The novellas where kind of foreshadowing and character building after the fact😂
Celeste dying was the biggest thing I remember feeling in this series. I ended up really liking Celeste and thoughts she was the coolest. I nearly flipped a table 😭
She mentioned how the guy interviewing America is basically Caesar Flickerman. However I want to say I read somewhere that this series was, according to Kiera Cass, supposed to be a mix of the Hunger Games and the Bachelor.
The was the subgenre of youtube I didn't know I needed
insane that you read this shit in three days because i had to WAIT for the second and third books and i was obsessed for SO long unfortunately
