The ORIGINAL Cait Corrain??? | The Selection Analysis + Talking about the Controversy

  • To find out that Kiera Cass went through a similar Cait Corrain-level controversy over 10 YEARS AGO was definitely a shock…
Although I definitely didn’t do any deep dives or hard investigation into this issue, I can at least say that this book was definitely not worth all that drama. Wendy Darling was just one person among the literal MILLIONS of people that read and reviewed the book. And even though she had her share of criticisms, it’s undeniable that the love for this book and this series is still alive and well even after so many years.
I’m glad I picked this book for Kristen’s Top Picks because even though there were some things I didn’t vibe with, I am eternally grateful that I got to experience the fictitious romance of Maxon and America. Unfortunately, he is my new unattainable standard for men. Sorry.
Be sure to follow Kiera Cass on instagram! @partylikeaworldstar
Despite my criticisms of her actions and don’t get me wrong - she was ABSOLUTELY in the wrong - she did apologize to the original reviewer and Wendy Darling is the only person that can accept or reject her apology. It is not my place to say whether or not people should continue to support Kiera Cass but I like to think that she’s learned (very publicly) from this experience and will not make another mistake like this in the future.

I think the reason she wasn’t punished as severely as Cait Corrain is that she didn’t target people of color, she didn’t falsify any reviews, liking reviews isn’t unethical, and because she is not the one who said the negative stuff. Elena Roth is the one who called the reviewer a bitch and while Kiera should have been smart enough to say “this convo is public and inappropriate,” she just said “mean comments get more likes. whatevs” and “I’ll ask my friends to like the positive reviews.” In terms of authors behaving badly, what Cait Corrain did was disgusting, racist, manipulative, and cruel. What Keira did was just stupid and a little rude.

Omg you've unlocked a core memory for me lmao. I witnessed this whole thing live because I was a follower of Wendy Darling's, and I couldn't believe people just moved on so quickly. The book community really was a different beast back then, if this happened now I doubt people would've just let it go😂

Imo, America and Aspen deserved each other. He’s the stereotypical bad boy®️, but she’s also toxic af. She only cares about herself and doesn’t understans the responsabilities of her position, and specially Maxin’s position, particularly in The One. So yeah, Maxin deserved better as well 🫠

I'm not even that interested in booktube or booktok, but I'm aware of the Cait Corrain controversy and I saw this on my recommended page and your energy instantly endeared me! Then when I clicked on your channel, I saw your intro video with your huge stack of books and I saw Wotakoi and I instantly subbed 😂 I'm not super plugged in to new releases in English fiction but I'm in a big shojosei manga phase rn so I had to sub lmao. Thank you for your engaging commentary and also for highlighting Doctors Without Borders! Your positive energy was made for UA-cam! I think I'm gonna check out your Aristotle and Dante vid next 💕

It makes me feel so old that I remember Kiera Cass from her Twilight days. She and her friend did these skits where they were the wives of the Volturi and acted like gangster wives and were super famous in the Twilight fandom. I followed her side channel because it was about her trying to get published and I even bought her first book, the Siren that she self published.
Always wondered if her popularity and fans were the reason she got trad published as she’d been trying for years before and didn’t get anywhere until the channel became popular

Was not even aware of the controversy until this video. Wow. 10 years later and we see a repeat.......fingers crossed we don't see another repeat any time soon.
I'm going to have read the books again cause for some reason I remember Aspen being likable. At least until the 2nd and 3rd book, but still. I remember absolutely loving this series as kid. So much so that I got the whole series plus the 2 books after that follow America's daughter..............be careful if you read that by the way. The second book had a scene that made me question things about the main series.💀
    Thank you for the review!❤

Something else that Cass did that wasn't covered here is the fact that she (or her publisher or some other friend tied to the drama) tried to also dox Wendy Darling's real name and information. Like that was the most disgusting part about the whole situation to me.

The vibe on Goodreads/the internet generally wasn't as strictly "Authors: Keep Out" about reviews as it is now. I think the tide shifted because of incidents like this (and much, much scarier ones).
The "Goodreads author" tag used to be more meaningful, there was more interaction between authors and readers. I remember Veronica Roth doing big pre-reviews of her books, talking about why she was excited about the story and joking around. (Title of the last book was a big topic with a lot of joke names going around, but the one I remember was Detergent lol.) But then it became clear that we can't have nice things :/

first off i just wanted to say that i enjoyed the video and your energy, was shocked when you said you had only 28 subscribers bc i assumed you were a bigger channel, definitely subbing :)
secondly, and it has been over a decade since i read the books lol so idk that i remember everything buT i think your criticism of the worldbuilding/dystopia missed the mark in some points. while i agree that the dystopia felt very shoehorned in to fit in w publishing trends, i think it was better than you gave it credit for. to me, the misogyny of the system was the whole point, so it makes sense that only women would be able to change their caste by marriage (as they are also able to be seen as state property and made into a game show), as well as the banning of premarital sex, which i remembered with more emphasis on the ban on birth control (but that might be the fact that i haven't read it in a while) and read it as analogous to the attacks on reproductive rights irl. also i think the fact that the caste system itself doesn't make sense is kinda the point, in that if you try to separate people by who they were born to it's not going to make sense as a system and ppl are inherently going to be in roles that they wouldn't be suited for.
i do agree with the general conceit of ur review and i really enjoyed your video, you have a great presence and i will be sticking around for more :)

In most love triangles, it's usually the OG boy we are "supposed" to cheer for. Hunger Games and the Selection seem to be the exception. I only ever read The Selection, but I thought Aspen and his attitude were dog sh*t from the beginning. I was glad when America ended up with Maxon, because he was at least good to her.

I read this series around(ish) when it came out, I was about your age at the time, (👵) I even read the novellas that follow Maxon and Aspen. I kept reading the series even though I was pretty bored. The author tried really hard to make it "dystopian", but it was pretty watered down dystopian. None of the characters are particularly likable, and I wanted America to chose nobody. She sucked, and so did Aspen, and Maxon in his own way.

Honestly I don’t agree with you I don’t the think it came from an evil place. She was a new author that published a book and I guess she believed at her creation, and like you said the one star comment could ruin her dream and not boost her book. At the of the thing people like the book very much and i don’t think liking positive rating is a crime. I agree she shouldn’t publicly talk about it with her agent but she probably didn’t know.
