My advise: make a tether to that dish so that you can take it out and if you lose your grip it will not end at the bottom of the water. The chance is small, but the cost of failure is high. When it slips out of your hand you even might be able to grab the tether so that it doesn't slam in the boat. Good luck with Starlink!
From fellow McCotters re-fitters. We installed the Starlink RV in Oriental, NC and then left Beaufort offshore to the Bahamas. It worked flawlessly the entire time. I’m a consulting engineer living and working on our Gulfstar 39 and it has made life for my wife and I so much easier. I leave it permanently mounted. It’s a waterproof unit meant for exterior use and seems not to mind saltwater spray, and yes the full waves, crashing over it. Mounting and dismounting always runs the risk of the dreaded “splash”. So far so good. Best of luck to you and your family!
Our antenna has survived hurricane winds, on our hilltop house on the NS coast. We've only ever lost internet during a couple very heavy snowstorms. The antenna heater kept it clean but there was too much snow in the sky for the satellite signal to get through... Which should not be a problem on a sailboat. 😉
We also have the exact same Starlink RV and love it. Got rid of all the house DiSH, DSL, etc and went with this, and took it to our boat. It is indeed a game changer! Happy for you guys! Rock on! Hope we cross paths!
My wife and I sailed the coast of Alaska in the 80's and 90's for 15 plus years for months at a time. The only "communication" we had with the outside world was a vhf radio and the am band on our am/Fm cassette stereo. My back stay was set up as an SSB antennae and since I didn't have an SSB Transceiver I connected the radio to that to see what I could get. It did nothing for FM range but I could get AM stations from Kodiak to California from skip or bounce of the radio signal off the ionosphere. That was very helpful for weather forecasts especially from Kodiak as whatever they were getting we tended to get a day later in Prince William sound. I also liked listening to radio reader on Public radio every day and their jazz and blues music hours. There wasn't really any internet at that time so we didn't miss it. The only navigation equipment we had were maps, a clock and a compass.. This was long before GPS was a thing. I managed to not get lost or run aground on these trips but I took navigating this area seriously. We were normally on our own and there usually weren't other boats nearby. We preferred being disconnected from civilization while we were out there but we weren't trying to run a You Tube channel production company at sea. Thanks for the video your daughter seems to be doing very well. Fair winds and following seas. Sail On!
Jordan and Desiree, absolutely love the way you closed out this episode with family. Life is short. You've discovered what matters in life: family and friends. Bless you both
Great episode. Two things: the leg of the dish fits into a standard fishing rod holder, which makes mounting it really easy and second, I can’t figure out why Starlink seem not to have considered the cruising sailor market. They seem to think everyone on the ocean is on a superyacht with unlimited budgets. In fact the volume marine market is cruising sailors, who are no dissimilar to RV users, and certainly can’t afford to pay thousands a month. There is no rationale for their maritime system charges.
So I’ve had Starlink for over a year now. It will be a game changer for y’all I’m sure. I’m sure you’ll figure this out, but I think you’re really going to have to take it down once y’all are cruising. It’ll be fine when you’re sitting still, but I think it will be difficult to keep a lock on the satellites once your under way. I hope I’m wrong. I would also be very careful about the connections (on dishy and the wire.) That salt is probably going to be murder on those connectors. I’m so excited for y’all. Hope it works out perfectly and you guys are able to use it everywhere you go! Good Luck!
It is amazing your knowledge on the different systems you have installed and use. This is a total game changer. Best wishes guys. Oso and Isa ❤❤❤❤❤incredible how time flies. 8 years, I have followed u from the very beginning.
We've had Starlink since they began coverage in Puerto Rico almost a year to the day now and we're absolutely pleased with the service so far. As the constellation has grown, so have our speeds and up-time. Was wondering how long before tech savvy Jordan would sink his teeth into it. Glad it's happening before sailing with Isa. Haven't watched the episode yet (we have a specific and ceremonious time for watching you guys), but I'm sure we'll have thorough exposure to the install and commissioning. Happy surfing!!!
When they changed the rv version to roam, they put a specific clause in it. "Land Use Only." Lots of chatter about the cruisers using the rv version. Some say they will cut off anyone using this version on the water and force them to go to the marine version. Maybe they will come out with a coastal cruiser version, say 50 miles from land. The marine version is crazy expensive, so most youtubers couldn't afford that.
I'd be surpised if we didn't see a leisure craft tier at some point. They could place a size limit, of say 20m, and automate a cross check on the position with AIS and IMO data periodically. That way most commercial vessels and bigger yachts would be pushed onto the commercial service, which is still cheap compared to VSAT. It just depends how much they're loosing, which they could probably calculate using their own location information, AIS, and IMO data...
Great job with that installation. Yes, Starlink is a game changer for the internet world. It’s gonna make your lives so much more convenient for internet access. I did read recently that Starlink was going to restrict the use of the RV model for boating situations. Seems that they want boaters/sailors to use the Maritime version. After seeing the differences in pricing, I can see why they would do that. I think it’s ridiculous to have such a disparity. Since Starlink can track your position maybe they can keep the pricing of the RV model for boat use at the current rate and charge a bit more if your internet use is, let’s say in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean, if that’s the reason they want to push the maritime version. Have your heard this too? Cheers 🍻
you explained really why I do not want a youtube channel to be my bread and butter.... it's like years ago, we went sailing to not have phone calls and read a book in peace. The problem with sailing really of grid is that the internet is our source for wind/ weather data. Happy to see the new development as its so much cheaper than the big satellite receivers
Before I had grandkids, (3), I used to watch other grandparents.acting so sappy! No longer. Nothing better than connecting with my grandsons, even today, via Zoom. Now your mom and dad can act as sappy as they want as often as they can. Congratulations on the new tech hook up that enables such silliness. :)
Great addition to the boat, I have to admit I was nervous when Jordan was one handed removing the satellite panel and thought it was going in the water. 😅
Jordan, OMG, your dad's face when he saw Isa on the SCREEN... That makes all that cable running work seem like nothing. That man LOVES his granddaughter!
I have had SL on my boat for almost a year now, even with the constant user agreement changes, it is still a game changer....and with he new packages available, world wide internet is now available for a reasonable cost.
Check out Sailing Doodles and the set up they have. Bobby found a 3rd party Star Link provider for less money for the marine set up. Congrats on your new daughter and I hope your travels are all successful. I look forward to seeing a lot more. Thanks for brightening and otherwise dull day 😃
I am looking forward to what you can get out of Starlink. The roam conditions say 'land use' so theoretically they could even block you being in a marina or at anchor.
Thanks for the great episode, look forward to hearing how it works in open water. Also look forward to hearing whatever you're willing to tell us about the power issue that caused y'all to move to your neightbor's boat while you restored service.
We can't thank you enough for this Starlink episode. It seems as if all Utuber's are installing the camper style aboard their boats these days. It's great to be able to tune in whenever you wish. Great episode and a Happy Easter to you and the Family.
I have the same setup in rural NorCal. Since I am outside the normal coverage area, went with the RV setup too although I use it at home only so far. Faster than the local dsl but I still only get 12-25m down. Tips: If it moves very much it has to re-locate / calibrate. The connector at the dish likes to slip out on certain ones. The dish I started with had to be replaced after a heavy rain. You may want to make it a shower cap, secure the cable at the dish somehow. Congrats though, overall it works well for me, curious how it does for you.
MORE GEAR!! It will be interesting to see how well that antenna lasts in salty-air conditions. An expensive item to have to replace often? And then there's the segment at 10:56 - which some sailing channel followers might refer to as "A Sam Holmes Moment" (he'd be so proud of you). 14:05 - there's a calendar photo-opp for ya. Looking good, Y'all.
Jordan, I live in a rural part of Michigan and have had Starlink for about 6 months now. I was on the wait list for 2 years. It has been great. I will give you one piece of advice though. Buy a spare cable to keep on hand. Mine went bad just out of the blue and it was about a week and a half waiting for the new one. Sounds like it is a pretty common issue. Thanks for the great video.
I got my Starlink last summer. Mounted it to my stern rail with a rod holder and a PVC adapter I made. It is currently pointed straight at my mizzen boom, with gale force winds and a 2ft chop. Working pretty darn good too.
Congrats guys! I love to nerd out on tech, hardware and software but who (rhetorical question) likes running cable? But Internet out in the deep blue is another communication tool that is priceless. Have a great week y’all!
I do agree that the rv version is not meant for surviving an ocean crossing. It doesn’t really even like a Texas thunderstorm ⛈. It’s awesome though and we have enjoyed less outages than any other internet service. We love it!
We have a rural property south of Sydney that is not very remote, but had been in a connectivity black spot forever. After trying many different technologies, Starlink now gives us perfect interest. I'm going to invest in the IPO for sure!
The “Alluring Arctic” channel experienced issues with the cable when it became wet. Basically, the service stopped, even after they dried out the cable. Juno, the captain on the channel, replaced the starlink cable with a standard cable. The service resumed working.
I'll be interested to see if they actually begin cracking down on use of the roamer package for marine use. It would appear that their marketing would suggest that they are moving towards a more universal use than just use for terrestrial applications. Time will tell.
Best add a fan to that space behind the TV Jordan. Like the one you did for the charger maybe. With the heat from the NAS and the other devices in that closed space it's going to get hot. Love the videos and congratulations on the Starlink.
Hey wonderful you all. Technology technology, everybody wants technology. It will be more wonderful when all screens will be three dimensional. Thanks much for your long-lasting episodes. One Maybe big problem in the near future though is the horrendous amount of satellites that are covering our planet that will block sunlight and our vision of space! Always problems to surmount. Well I'm rambling on now so I'll hang it up and say a d o. Goodbye for now, Jordan Taylor Isa and Oso.😀
Great video Jordan. To run more wires through a conduit, first run a nylon fish line. You can attach the cable you need to add to the fish line, but you need to also add another fish line for the next time you need to run a line. If you have both short sections an a long section, run different color fish line for each,
Oh my gosh - Starlink IS a game changer! I watched a movie crossing to the Bahamas and FaceTimed with the kids from Warderick Wells! Loving it so far! Enjoy and keep us posted how well it is working for you!
Curious, have you been cruising several months away from home with Starlink RV? I ask because the terms of service may restrict long-term travellers. If it has been a couple of months since your arrival in the Bahamas and service is still there, that is good news. But, my understanding is they can cancel your contract as the service is meant for weekend warriors and occasional RV vacations.
next time you have to fish a cable, send it through with a sting attached that you can use a to pull something through the next time. The time after that, send whatever through with a string again... 😁
Your receiver mount looks pretty sharp. I've seen, at least, 1 other boat mount a starlink system. He used a $30 fishing rod holder. Don't know you spent. Yours is probably better, probably.
I highly recommend a tether or safety chain on that dish….it would be an awfully disappointing thing to fumble - drop it in the water…maybe even a pin through the mount on the Bimini pole to avoid the mount from coming loose. Should a good plan and enjoying watching your life and work efforts. Best wishes!
REALLY CONSIDER mounting your dish semi permmently with the mount sold by STARMOUNT-SYSTEMS LTD in California. Their mount takes your dish and removes the post and motors and it then fits into their waterproof and ONCE TALL mount, its beside your solar and does not shade it and you can use it underway. The Starmount is the same as the MARINE MOUNT BY STARLINK. I've been using Starlink since it came out and ABSOLUTLEY LOVE IT, they now have almost 80% of the world covered now with all the new satilites put up in the last 2 years. CHEERS AND FAIR WINDS Steve h.
Great vid. I am impressed with the main camera mount. Perfect. Looks like the Family is doing well. Isa is such a pretty, cute and happy girl. She is lucky to have fantastic Mom and Dad. Great job.
you could put a fishing line running through the area that wires are stored. Then use it to pull wires through, while having a second line connected so it's always there. Also could have pvc tubing installed professionally too contain the wires neatly, with access points that are accessible exits. So if you get a short it's easy to find, replace. Holy crap, star link is wild...i remember when Sat's were first used too broadcast sporting events. Then cell phones replaced ship to shore systems. Loran,.....its just unbelievable.
Dear Sailing Project Atticus family, The handyman magician Jordan always doing amazing things! 🧙♀ But I kinda worried when I saw he didn't put any silicon around the cable "clam" you installed outside on the boat. 😐 I put silicon on anything that will get a bit of rain or water, hehehe! Just saying... of course, I am hardly a pro like you, Jordan. 😝 And beautiful Isa, her smile is a ray of sunshine! 👼 Hugs from Panama!
Cool cool cool, when you think about the new methods of communicating is like the invention and use of the compass centuries ago. You guys are on the cutting edge of exploration using the new technologies. Thanks for the info. Can you imagine what it will be like in 50 years? As always my friends, have fun be safe and see you next week.
Starlink truly is a game changer for many people. That download speed was impressive, and with only 49ms of latency too. That's great for a satellite connection. Not good for twitch gaming, but fine for most other uses. Looking forward to hearing more about how it works for you guys offshore. And as an aside, in the industry we say "NAZ" not "N-A-S". Good luck and look forward to next weeks episode!
Watching you guys this morning on our RV Starlink 😊, love it but the monthly price is increasing this month 😢. Oh well, gotta pony up the extra $15/ mo if I want internet out here on the farm.
We've come a LONG way. 1990's on a US Navy ship we had satellite communications. 9600 baud, multiplexed across 4 channels. No idea what the system cost was, but the auto tracking antenna was about 6' diameter.
Love StarLink. looking to get as a backup. Great job guys. Your home looks amazing , baby proofing aye u shall see. Excellent explanation. well done Jordan. FL Crew
Wow, that is great! We put down some money to be on the waiting list for StarLink in Guatemala. They say it will be here this year. I sure hope so. You guys take care!
Desiree & Jordon, what an awesome addition to Atticus II. The wonders of modern technology eh. I just hope Elon doesn't shut you down for having a RV receptor on a marine application. After all he needs another billion in his pocket. Glad keeping in touch with family will be so much easier. That's most important. Isa has grown so much...what a cutie. Fair winds! and thanks for sharing.❤
I was lucky enough to get Starlink at the absolute very beginning, and it’s been an absolute game changer. Really had no another “reliable” options. I couldn’t be happier with the system. Covid brought my wife home to work, in which she’s on nonstop video conferences. It’s been absolutely flawless. I’ll be interested to see how it’s going to work for you, with the movements. Obviously I’m sure you’ll only use it tied up, or at anchorage, but movement regardless. Please share updates along the way. Congrats.
Starlink satellite $125 a month 75-110 Mbps. Can also put the service into vacation mode anytime and there is no fee to put the service back on. We use it camping on the west coast.
Dude if there was a any sailing award you guys should be awarded one… Wish you a best of luck! And healthy life to Isabella too… 🎉
My advise: make a tether to that dish so that you can take it out and if you lose your grip it will not end at the bottom of the water. The chance is small, but the cost of failure is high. When it slips out of your hand you even might be able to grab the tether so that it doesn't slam in the boat. Good luck with Starlink!
I would agree but, Jordan probably already has a plan in the making to secure. Oh, how our world is evolving, technologically speaking.
I shuddered when he grabbed it and said "... like this" 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Tether and/or lanyard... also is the boom normally higher? Looks like the starlink would be whacked
Have you run into any contractual issues with Starlink as I assume you are roaming the Bahamas for several months?
Our antenna has survived hurricane winds, on our hilltop house on the NS coast. We've only ever lost internet during a couple very heavy snowstorms. The antenna heater kept it clean but there was too much snow in the sky for the satellite signal to get through... Which should not be a problem on a sailboat. 😉

Oso is indispensable. So glad he was there to help! 😉 Super happy for the Starlink! Family ❤️.
Ending with Isa saying hello to Grama n Grandpa made this Grama n Grandpa in Alaska so happy!❤
Jordan (and Des), it’s amazing how you can take a job like routing cable in a boat and turn it into 15 minutes of entertainment! Great job guys 👍
I believe this is what Joshua Slocum used on his Around the World trip. 😁

It has to do with being in motion and the service should return when motion is not detected
Yeah my dream was crushed when I found out about that part, same time, by the time I have a boat it should be even more cheap (a decade from now).
I think 15:39 15:39 🎉🎉🎉are 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉@ReneMedia 😢 15:39
Triggering my OCD!!! Jordan, PLEASE put a lanyard on that antenna so it doesn't fall into the water!!! LOL
One word, especially for the cables in an outdoor marine environment: spares!
Thank you for all the hard work you put into your great videos.

A gimbal mount for the Starlink antenna will improve your signal strength by limiting tracking errors.
I am so happy 😊 you found a solution to your internet challenges. Two thumbs up 👍.
Great addition to the boat, I have to admit I was nervous when Jordan was one handed removing the satellite panel and thought it was going in the water. 😅
Not trying to sound like a Tuff Guy. However, I once survived a whole weekend without Wi-Fi!! Ha! The Horror! The Horror! ;)
Haha! Dear god sir. This is nothing short of a miracle.
Being able to stay connected with friends and family while sailing the world is great.

I really like boat work with Jordan. Thanks for including Desiree, Isa, Oso, and the Big Guy! Safe travels ❤️
Love that you named it Uma. Happy Easter to y’all! ❤
There's another UA-cam channel called Sailing Uma
I wonder if they were in the same dock at that time

great machinist good to find a guy like that
That was a great thing you did especially for the Grand Parents
I have the same setup in rural NorCal. Since I am outside the normal coverage area, went with the RV setup too although I use it at home only so far. I love your project videos. These inspire me to work on some upgrades to my home…
IT is GOOD to BE Connected with Grandma and Grandpa

Nice joh on the install project. Ever think of putting a safety line/wire onto the dish just incase it popped out of the bracket?
Family ❤️
There’s no better connection. 😇
Amazing vid, Tks so much will help many sailors.
Congrats guys! I love to nerd out on tech, hardware and software but who (rhetorical question) likes running cable? But Internet out in the deep blue is another communication tool that is priceless. Have a great week y’all!

good job on a clean install of the Starlink buds.
Best add a fan to that space behind the TV Jordan. Like the one you did for the charger maybe.
With the heat from the NAS and the other devices in that closed space it's going to get hot.
Love the videos and congratulations on the Starlink.
Jordan i am always impressed with your engineering.

@@Cedandkikisailing We have only been here for a few weeks but we have friends with Starlink who have been here since November and have been fine.
What Great information. Thanks
An excellent episode - informative and well put together with lots of slick touches. And the practical tips! - I've never heard of a fish stick......!
Great installation and it works.
Thank you
next time you have to fish a cable, send it through with a sting attached that you can use a to pull something through the next time. The time after that, send whatever through with a string again... 😁
I know I sound like a broken record but this is a another amazing episode! I love you guys!!
I’m glad to see that you were able to figure out a way to make your life so much easier. I hope it works out for you guys great episode
I'll say it again - it was great seing those old clips in 4K. 🙂
Your receiver mount looks pretty sharp. I've seen, at least, 1 other boat mount a starlink system. He used a $30 fishing rod holder. Don't know you spent. Yours is probably better, probably.
Prima, super..thanks for video......Greating from Prag !
Just realized my old 78 Irwin has the same cushion fabric pattern😂
Very interesting how something so simple can change a family’s quality of life so much. Just loved the ikea directions though 🤣
Great job.
Another great episode
Congratulations on the Star Link Installation.
you could put a fishing line running through the area that wires are stored.
Dear Sailing Project Atticus family,
The handyman magician Jordan always doing amazing things! 🧙♀
But I kinda worried when I saw he didn't put any silicon around the cable "clam" you installed outside on the boat. 😐
I put silicon on anything that will get a bit of rain or water, hehehe! Just saying... of course, I am hardly a pro like you, Jordan. 😝
And beautiful Isa, her smile is a ray of sunshine! 👼
Hugs from Panama!
Great connection. It’s better than I get at home from Kinetic (local phone provider) in Weddington, N C.
How exciting guys, so more internet more videos? Great job enjoy your time.
Love StarLink. looking to get as a backup. Great job guys. Your home looks amazing , baby proofing aye u shall see. Excellent explanation. well done Jordan. FL Crew
Congratulations to you Buddy on your new buddie ,fair wind my boy ozzo....
Great video! I missed watching you work on stuff!
Congrats.
Well done marline you worked so hard on that. Ha ha
Happy Easter to you and yours
Our son works for Spacex over here in Titusville Fl. and sometimes they launch two a day. lol
nice job. i am excited where this can take you.
Starlink satellite $125 a month 75-110 Mbps. Can also put the service into vacation mode anytime and there is no fee to put the service back on. We use it camping on the west coast.
Wow that is awesome
