  • South Africa moved to decimal currency in 1961 with the launch of a new range of coins from the 1/2c to the 50c piece. Millions were minted, so there are no real key dates.
    There is one exception: the full-ground cover!
    In the 1961 full-ground version, the ground covers the entire area up to the shaft under the wagon. Between the wheels it almost looks like a little lamb is hiding in the shade.
    No one knows precisely how many were minted, and only around 20 are known to exist. Even a worn specimen will easily reach R20,000 and R50,000 for graded MS-coin is not unheard of.
    This is a coin to keep an eye out for - you never know, you might just find one!
