- Correction: 03:36 That's 3,746 KILOMETERS, taller than the Drakensberg from sea level (3,482 METERS). So the fact is accurate, but the analogy is really goofy as the stack is taller than the mountain by a factor of a 1000! So embarrassing...
The 2nd decimal series (also known as the South African Nickel series) was minted from 1965 until 1989. It is greatly under-appreciated and has several key dates. The coins are readily available and makes for a great start for a new Numismatist.
In this video I cover the values of all the coins, with specific emphasis on the key dates, including:
1965 Afr 1c
1965 Eng 1c
1969 Eng 20c
1965 Afr 50c
1965 Eng 50c
1965 Afr R1
...and a few others.

Oh no, the R1 coin I show at 7:50 is actually a 1966! These are 80% silver and that coin is worth about R120. Just imagine it was a 1980, then face value is accurate! Sorry!
What about 1966 1 cent
@@cornelianakale1533 As I said in the video, all cents from 1966 - 1989 are worth at most R5 in UNC.
Thanks for the effort you put into the video. The second decimal is my favorite to collect, and the key dates make the hunt interesting. 👍😀
Thx
I have one a 1974 five cent what to do now
Hi. I bought a 1965 R1 English NGC graded coin MS63. Would this be business strike? (part of the 2341) Thanks.
MS refers to an uncirculated business strike.
your vedios are grait and very informitive.
there is a few more key dates;
1/2c 1971 - 1979 is also difucult to get in high grades ms65+
10c: 1967 &1968 ar lower mintage of about 50 000 each
20c: 1967, 1968, 1969, 1970, 1973, are also harder to find with very low mintages.
50c: 1967 and 1969 are also hard to find.
Yes! So true... I am still missing a 1969 50c and later dates of the half cent. Patience. Patience. :-)
@@penniesshillings I also don't have the 1965 and 1969 50c pieces but have the 1967 Afrikaans and the English 50c.

Hi, I am busy with a video on this very topic.
Why do you show the copper nickle 5 cent piece with th double strike on the obverse 5 and C and the blue crane , national bird of South African and was discontinued in 2011 , I have a number of these coins and the only info is by anAustralian presenter who presented this on his show , can you tell me more please ?
Hi Peter. What would you like to know? I'll gladly provide additional info since so little is available on the Internet. The nickel 5c coin is the 2nd decimal set. The 5c piece was minted from 1965 and discontinued in 1989. In the last year, only 58,261 were minted. All other years several million. Thank you for your interest.
I have a 20cent coin thats in Afrikaans and its 1965 is there any value ...
Watch the video...
Hi I've 1/2cent and other many old SA coins but I'm in Namibia
Where can you sell it in Johannesburg or in Soweto
There are dealers in Johannesburg like RandCoin and Coinvest, but usually better to sell on Facebook. See my other video on selling coins online.
