How To Fix Heavily Corroded Wheels - Silver Metallic Powder Tips

  • In this video we explain how we go about fixing corroded wheels. These wheels are off a Mid 2000's Ford vehicle and are a machined wheel. These wheels are typical for having bad corrossion as they just clear coat them from the factory. We will also cover tips on gun settings, spray technique and how we do them!
Also in this video we try out Rim Strip from Express Chem, we are only stripping clear but it did give us a good idea as to how there product matches up against B17, so far so good and at a much lower price. We hope to test it a bit more on more difficult coatings soon. Check them out at this link: powderstrip.com (please note we are not being paid for this review, but did receive chemical to sample-our review is not influenced by manufacturer at all)

Great video. I always throw a high build primer on first when the wheel is hot to cover most of the corrosion and any imperfections that I might have missed in the blaster. Hitting it hot also helps to prevent dotting on the powder if you’ve not out gassed for long enough. Something which can often happen with heavily corroded wheels. Also easier to see any areas that might need a little extra primer as it flows out as soon as it hits the wheel. Primer is usually much cheaper to buy than the colour you’re powder coating so long term it can work out more cost effective to primer the whole wheel on a corroded wheel and then second coat the face and inside bowl with the colour. All depends on customers expectations I guess. In England our weather and the products used by the local car washes means we’re forever doing corroded wheels

Blasting isn't for stripping, it's to create the proper surface for powder adhesion. Stripper is for cleaning. Blaster would clean but take too long and risks digging ditches in the wheel.
