I am new to woodworking! I have friend that needs one of your dovetailed flag cases! Do sell them? If so, how much for 2 cases? Awesome video to make them, just not to that level of craftsmanship! Please advise.
Beautiful work Rob! I have my grandfather’s flag and have been wanting to build a box for it. I have to continue to thank you for everything you do. In April of 2021, you called me to wish me a happy birthday (you had already sent me a card!) and to encourage me to finally start cutting dovetails. Fast forward to today…I just finished creating your small box design with the wooden hinge and beautifully hand cut dovetails. It was built to hold a small comfort bird that I carved for a friend fighting cancer. I will be giving it to him tomorrow. The things you do touch so many Rob.
Thank you for what you do for vets. I'm getting ready to take over the shadow box duty for retirement flags. Retirees take a turn for a couple of years and videos like yours really inspire me to take them up a step. Thanks again
Been meaning to make my grandfather's flag box for years now, but I wasn't satisfied with any of the tutorials I found online. Until now! Exactly what I needed to feel confident enough to start. Thanks Rob!
I think the bottom miters would look better if you cut a dovetail shaped wedge and put it through the cutout in the miter and then trim it flush. Then it would look like the dovetails at the top of the case.
This is timely for me. My 90 year old father, who was a Korean war veteran (bronze star and purple heart recipient) passed away last August, and had a military ceremony at his grave side service. I received the flag that covered his casket, but it was put into a plastic wrapper to protect it. Your demonstration here gave me several ideas to build a case, although the dimensions will be a bit larger due to the size of the flag. Thank you for the great demonstration and helpful ideas!!
Rob, my name is Dan Giks. You have really inspired me to rise up in my wood working skills by all the stuff you teach us all the way in Kenya, East Africa. I built for myself a humongous shooting -board that has really helped me in improving the squareness of my tenons and cross-cuts...🙏🏿. I am also an avid fan of Purple Heart Programme...👍🏿👍🏿👍🏿!!!
THANK YOU ROB!! I really appreciate you doing this. I knew it would take a while to figure this out and perfect the technique, but if anyone could do it… it would be you! As a WWII Veteran my grandfather deserves nothing less for his flag. I can’t wait to get started! Thanks again for this! 🙏🏼🇺🇸❤
My first 4 attempts that I sent you pictures of a few years back were cut and dovetailed at 45° on the bottom 2 joints, but nowhere near perfect so I filled them with epoxy. Have you ever tried that? It looks like your bottom 2 joints are 22.5° cuts, with dovetail splines, is that correct? The only reason I chose to cut the 4 cuts (bottom 2 joints) at 45° was because they resulted in a 45° angle. I figured out that it would work because the top angle is 90° and required the 2 boards to be cut at 90°. It was easier to dovetail 45° instead of 22.5°. My 22.5° dovetails were way too loose no matter how hard I tried to keep them perfect. Do you have a video of you trying your hand at 45° dovetails anywhere? Thanks again Rob! Shoulder to the wheel! 😉👊🏼👏🏼🇺🇸
Rob and crew, The small things that you do make a big diffrence. This project is one that I have had a hard time getting my brain to "work it out" and you make it look easy. Thank you.
Respect... I make a lot of these but not to the degree of quality... I strive to get there and your brilliant break downs, techniques and lessons really help. Thank you for honoring those who have served, paying it forward and sharing the journey.
No woodworking student should should ever miss any of your videos. Every time there is something new to learn. Thank you so much for teaching all these tips and techniques. Though i do wonder when and where did you learn all this? haha
Real great woodworking. Like all your work. Videos will become more relaxing when there is less speech. Handcraft, fine tools and good camera angle are more than a thousand words. Greetings from Finland👍🔨🔨
Thanks for the great idea Rob. I’m always looking for interesting challenges to put the skills you taught me and tools you provided me to the test. Prior to attending your course in 2019 I would never have considered a project like this, now it sounds like something fun and meaningful to do on a a Saturday afternoon, and I have confidence that I can achieve a similar quality. That is not an insult to your craftsmanship, it’s a testament to your mentorship, methodology, philosophy, and humanity. Love you brother!
An absolutely beautiful outcome, and informative video. I have made 5 of these flag boxes over the years for friends, though mine look like some kid in high school shop class did the work. As I am sure you know, there is no greater joy in woodworking than to see the appreciation from the vet's family. The scary part was making sure I did not get the flag dirty, or have it unfold. As there is something close to sacred about the way the military does the grave site folding. Thanks for sharing...... and could you share what brand name wax you used.
It turned out beautiful! I'm in the process of making one myself. Although, mine won't be as fancy as this one with dovetails in it. Thank you for sharing your build with us!
Hi Bob. My first video. Wow, what skill with the details. I really appreciate your work. Very nice. I do love hoe you use the hand planner. Very sweet.
Love it. I enjoyed watching your videos with my Dad before he passed from covid while fighting cancer. He was a Marine in Vietnam and a purple heart recipient. Any ideas for making this and using some purple heart wood?
Absolutely you could make it from purple heart, but it wont stay purple. Over time it oxidizes and turns brown. You can refresh to purple by sanding or planing
Great to see you do a complete piece of work. Ash is a favourite timber and I agree with you about a simple wax finish. However I was disappointed with your use of plated cross head screws surely slotted brass screws would be more appropriate? 😃
A beautiful piece of work Rob. I think this is outstanding, a Canadian honoring US servicemen. As you were doing this display case for an American flag I began to wonder how other countries flags are displayed. Are any other flags displayed triangularly as is the US flag?
AMAZING WORK as Always!!! By the way, what is up with new hair style???.....lol......been a while since I've had time to watch videos lately. Keep Up the GREAT Work!!!
You are starting to look like an old hippy! I can relate, but don't have the hair any more.... Thanks for doing this. I need to make one for one of my brothers who passed last summer.
It was interesting to watch this but I wondered why you used plastic for the window rather than glass. Your design does not appear to permit its replacement if it gets scratched or warps or goes brittle. Glass could be fitted in a non-permanent way with an internal bolection moulding or it could be made a feature on the outside.
Great video. I'm a Canadian vet that did this for one of my CO's that retired. However, I went a bit further, and built it into a shadow box. This made for a great way to display a flag as well as my CO's medals.
Great work, but please call it a memorial flag box. That's also not the flag of Vietnam, you're using the American Flag. It matters what you call things.
Video title is “Memorial flag case” and the thumbnail is “Veteran flag case”. Both are appropriate, and correct. Luther who manages and creates the thumbnail and titles is a 30 year US Army Veteran with 3 combat tours and he assures me both titles are appropriate

Great story ryan. Send us a pic of your box and we can post it on our customer gallery
Rob, I appreciate what you do for our brothers and sisters in arms!
They deserve everything we can do for them

Thanks Dan! The blessings of long distance learning, glad to help.
Looks great. Cutting those ‘dovetails’ on the 22.5 corners is impressive. I’d bugger that up in a skinny second
you could do it
THANK YOU ROB!!

You are simply insane, such perfection is truly appreciated.
Its the only way I can do it
Rob and crew,
The small things that you do make a big diffrence.
This project is one that I have had a hard time getting my brain to "work it out" and you make it look easy. Thank you.
This build takes a lot of fussiness, but its really fun

As usually your work and commitment is mastery. Thank Rob
Thanks for watching and commenting

Thanks for the comment. We will keep that in mind on the next one we build
That joint is beautiful!
I absolutely love this project..the ash and ebony looks great. Thanks Rob for another great video!
I loved making it
Great job. I would have used the ebony veneer on the main dovetail corner as well.
Ross from Australia
That could be interesting
All corners would match.

Very nice looking box. Nice job
Truly masterful work - love it all! Thanks for your instructions Rob!
you bet

Its Renaissance wax
You really do fine work. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and giving us all something to aspire to!
My pleasure!
Very nice Rob.
Beautiful flag box! Really like the idea of the splines to make the bottom corners look like dovetails. Great video thank you for sharing!👍🏻 27:59
Thanks for watching and commenting
Beautiful work!
Thank you
Excellent video. When marking out the pins for the mitered dovetail, do you use the Shawn Shim?
Yes I do!
It turned out beautiful! I'm in the process of making one myself. Although, mine won't be as fancy as this one with dovetails in it. Thank you for sharing your build with us!
I hope I gave you some ideas you can use on yours
Hi Bob. My first video. Wow, what skill with the details. I really appreciate your work. Very nice. I do love hoe you use the hand planner. Very sweet.
Welcome to the channel. Go check out my videos on using the hand plane
Yes Sir, I will check all of them out.
@Fredd King you won't regret it at all, absolutely brilliant insight and teaching
Thanks
No problem
Great project, making one for my father's flag
Send us a pic when you get it done and we will put it in our customer gallery
@@RobCosmanWoodworking will do, it will be a while - I'm still trying to finish Christmas presents...
That's a GREAT project Rob. It is unfortunate there is a Purple Heart need for them! !! !!!
It was an honor to make the case
Thank you. My dad just passed away. He was a Korean War veteran. I’m going to attempt to build this.

The are robertson screws that will also accept phillips head. I would only use brass slotted screws if you were going to see them
thanks
Beautiful work as usual Rob. Why does your 5 1/2 plane have 3 holes on its side?
Jake is experimenting on it
Very nice, but also very complicated.
which part do you find complicated?
Did I see Rob using a 17 degree chisel on hardwood (9:30)? Thanks.
nope
A beautiful piece of work Rob. I think this is outstanding, a Canadian honoring US servicemen. As you were doing this display case for an American flag I began to wonder how other countries flags are displayed. Are any other flags displayed triangularly as is the US flag?
The Canadian flag is also done that way
Nicely done! I might have missed it but what wood is that?
Ash...Its at the very end
Rob I notice that you bevel your chisel with about a 5 degree chamfer. Is this necessary?
AMAZING WORK as Always!!!
By the way, what is up with new hair style???.....lol......been a while since I've had time to watch videos lately.
Keep Up the GREAT Work!!!
The barbers in Canada are on strike
Nice how 2 video.
Glad you liked it
You are starting to look like an old hippy! I can relate, but don't have the hair any more.... Thanks for doing this. I need to make one for one of my brothers who passed last summer.
Dumb question but I noticed holes in the side of your 5 1/2 plane, what is the purpose of that?
we are doing some experiments on planes
What kind of Canadian uses Phillips screws? 😂 Nice work Rob.
So I have to ask. If the glass breaks at any point in the future, how do you replace it? You design does not allow for future accidents.
cut to fit, shrink in dry ice and make sure it is in the right spot as it warms!
It was interesting to watch this but I wondered why you used plastic for the window rather than glass. Your design does not appear to permit its replacement if it gets scratched or warps or goes brittle. Nice but i cant do this. Should make something simpler.
