Thank you for being the first person to both make a video about the m3 pro chip, as well as discuss in detail the differences between the *two* versions of it, providing all the relevant benchmarks I wanted to see for both. The only factors left in making my decision now is battery life, and between 14" and 16".
I'm hesitating between the M3chip and the M3Pro chip. I think the M3 chip would fit my needs but I really like the Space Black color and it fits my budget. However, I noticed some white lines linked to the use of the thunderbolts... Also, it has a 18hrs battery life, against a 22hrs one for the M3chip. What would you advise me to do? Thank you !!
This is the video I was looking for. Few focus on the M3 Pro chip, or it gets easily dismissed. But you took the time to show its good points. I think my mind was already made, and I do not need a more powerful machine, but I am now more comfortable with my choice :) Coming from an Intel MacBook Pro, the difference will be amazing.
Every Macbook I've owned before the M-range was always eating up CPU doing practically nothing, cooking the system. I'm now enjoying have a laptop (M3 Pro) that actually seems to function like you'd expect any basic laptop to do when doing fairly simple (non-intensive) tasks.
@@ymckrgb I assumed that's the reason. What I don't really get is why they waited so long to switch to ARM. They must surely have had some idea how much better the chips would perform compared to Intel's range of bloated spluttering fire-hazard processors from what they've been doing with iPhones.
Thanks for reviewing the M3 Pro as it was the one I was most interested in in terms of performance compared to the previous one. I thought MaxTech was going to cover these specs combos but everyone seems to be reviewing the M3 Max only which is way too expensive for me - thanks again! :)
Exactly my situations. I think most people are looking for a powerful future proved MacBook but not the Max Version which is way to expensive especially here in Germany (the base 14” M3 Max starts at 3.999 € 💀) Im looking for an upgrade from my 2019 intel 16 inch base model to m2 pro or m3 pro. Somehow it seems like a not so easy decision for me. Because I don’t want the base model this time. I want 32/36 gb of ram and 1tb ssd (for occasional 4K 10 Bit editing, lots of photo editing, and graphic design, often used parallel) In this category I’m already around 3k euros🥲
Long as they're in stock I think a Refurb 14" M2 Pro (10CPU/16GPU) makes more sense than the base M3 14", especially after you spec it with 16GB RAM. Base M3 Pro seems solid though.
Really looking forward to feedback on the M3 Pro chips on the MacBook Pro. Typing this from the 16" MacBook Pro with M3 Pro 12CPU 18GPU 18RAM 512SSD that I picked up a few hours ago!
Hey there - good so far. Truly only have had it for 4 hrs so hard to say but I'm very impressed. I'm coming from the 13" MacBook Pro Touch Bar with M1 chip so I'm pumped to be up in the "pro" chipset line from the base M1. The M1 was still kicking, but I was ready to sell it for a change. I'll use this machine as everyday computer, along with photo editing, video editing (not professional), and high quality streaming/media consumption. Also want to game a bit on it as well with games available on Mac with PS5 controller and some Apple Arcade games. I'm the same as you - I plan to have this computer for 6-8 years. The M3 Pro will last. Starting to see some benchmarks come out on M3 Pro chips and very happy with what I'm seeing.
Criticism: I didn't like the bar charts, sorry. They are not linear and do not show the actual number and percentage on the graph. It's so easy to improve that I had to comment on it.
@@RealJoseph123I’m guessing linear charts that display numbers and percentages on the graph. Just a hunch. But then again, the suggestion wasn’t for you anyway so it doesn’t matter that you don’t understand.
@@TombBugTours : Yea, but it depends on balancing your requirement and budget. As I am looking for 2-3 years of usage....this decision works out fine.... as it is a SIGNIFICANT jump from Mac-Air 2017. Also 36 GB is an over-kill.... for my kinda work = waste of funds.... as enough review have showed. I will plan for 2026 Pro Max machine..... with longevity in mind.... & be ready with funds.
Thank you, I haven't seen many cover this base level M3 Pro MBP. Originally I was going to buy a M3 MBP, but after adding more ram, being so close to the M3 Pro MBP ($200), seemed like a no brainer for all you gain. However, not seeing any early benchmarks, I was worried how a binned chip would do. This model still seems like the sweet spot in my opinion. If that M3 MBP came with 16 gigs of ram stock, would be a harder sell.
I guess Apple gave only 8 GB of RAM to the base M3 Pro to not cannibalize sales in the binned M3 Pro model. Weird decision by Apple. Only 8 GB for a 'Pro' model
Great video as always Greg! My thoughts exactly! Initially ordered the M3 version and upgraded the RAM to 16GB until I realized from your initial video that it was only $200 to get all the benefits of M3 Pro, more than double the RAM of the base model, better processor, extra thunderbolt port, space black color, ability to drive 2 external displays, better thermals. Ended up canceling my order and getting the base M3 Pro and am currently typing this on that device, super happy with my purchase! Thank you once again for your informative videos! Definitely saved me from buying the wrong device!
I would not get the base binned M3 pro. I would get the unbinned for the $2399. And just one example you’re getting less GPu cores than the M2 Pro. Get the 2399 one.
That's how Apple manipulates and nudges you into purchasing a more expensive device. Marques Brownlee has a video about it. It's called a "ladder strategy".
The components are better this time. Last time the memory and hard drive were slower on the base models, this time the components are much better and give an all around better performance with the M4 Pro. It’s not as powerful as the M3 max but very few need that type of power.
@@sammyjammy6647 dawg I'm upgrading from a 2017 base MacBook Pro idc how it compares to the M2 lol it's a massive upgrade regardless of M2. No one who has an M2 device is gonna be upgrading to M3, it's stupid when people make those comparisons as if people are upgrading their Macs every year
@@oliverniehaus7159 listen, boy, you listen to my advice. You don’t know what you’re doing. I’m here to be your daddy and help you make with a decision.
Awesome, this was a great video. My current MacBook is M1 Pro 32/512GB I was wondering should I change mine with M3 Pro 18/512GB. My main use is FCPX and Ps for UA-cam videos not heavy like 8k rendering or something. Should I upgrade?
I don't think it's negative at all to see this as what it is. A decision by marketing to reposition the M3 Pro chip by effectively degrading its capability and making the jump to a much more powerful and expensive Max chip more appealing to a larger number of customers in the M3 generation. I say it's not negative, because that's clearly what they have done. It's another example of Apple selling up its customers. Just the same as they have done with the base 14" Pro, where if you even think of upgrading anything on it, you might as well move up to the Pro chip. Apple have mastered the art of the up sell. Its the most innovative thing they do these days unfortunately and it overshadows some amazing hardware.
Apple has all the data and over time interprets it and understands what they have to do to make a sustainable business model. When they launched Apple Silicon, they fired at 100% and that has caused massive issues in future sales, basically the M1 was too good. They are now realigning their lineup and getting some sort of pricing to performance ratio. So this is the year where they make the Max the de facto performance variant and the M3 Pro is kept similar to the M2 Pro to widen the gap. Very sensible and easy to understand and for the vast majority not important as 95%+ upgrading to the M3 Pro will be coming from an Intel or M1, so the performance versus the M2 Pro is moot.
@@piotrd.4850 Apple rarely breaks 9% of the PC market and that is where they are, at the moment which is a glass ceiling. So yes they will struggle to sell more because of the windows monopoly. So it is about targeting current Intel MacBook users rather than looking for miracles in getting windows users to buy Macs.
This is the comparison I was hoping to see. Coming from M1 13" with the touchbar, I figured the M3 base was a no-go for me due to the limitations it shares with that model--the starting ram, one display output, lack of charging on both sides, etc. but without knowing much about the entry M3 Pro it's hard to tell whether it's worth getting over the M2 version. Still torn on that one but it's good to see more coverage on the entry M3 Pro.
@@abrahamlee1774 Still saving up lol but I’ve pretty much decided on M2 pro unless it takes me until the next one coming out to get the funds. Either one is worth it imo but the 500 or so off is significant enough for me to tip the scales.
Been back and forth about either getting the 14" M3 with 16gb or the same size with the 12 core pro chip. Comes with the higher watt charger, has two fans and has three USBC ports. Which is a huge upgrade from my 12" MacBook from early 2016. Student discount will also lower that marginally too.
I would recommend going for the 14" with the M3 Pro chip. You'll get 18GB of RAM, better CPU, and significantly better GPU. If you were to upgrade the M3 base from 8GB RAM to 16 GB RAM, that's 200 bucks. Another 200 to get the M3 Pro base and much more benefit (more RAM, CPU, GPU, additional USBC port, overall better performance)
@@TaylorMcNally Thanks for your input. At this point, I'm leaning more towards the pro chip unlike before. Might commit the extra $200 for the better chip variant as well.
@@BobMcBurger1 That’s when you fall into the Apple price ladder trap 😌 I also don’t need the 12 core but would prefer the 96W as a premium. But 1 tb is a must and what happens when I upgrade 1 tb to the 11c well you guessed it right few bucks short of the 12c base which comes with more +1 CPU, +4 GPU and 96W is default. Send help 😅
Appreciate your opinion! I bought a M2 pro on the 22nd of October with an education discoun. It cost 2118€ (gift card of 150 € included). I have the possibility of returning it and buy the M3 or M3 pro. The M3 pro would cost 2358 €, so 240 € more. What do you think guys? I dont know if it's reasonable for the real upgrade based on the video
@@valenchonI think if you’re already considering it, go for it! My biggest regret was getting an Intel just before the M1 came out. M2 awesome machine so no as bigger gulf as mine but if it’s hassle free and only $240, go for it. Plus it’s black haha
Best comparison of base M3 Pro (11/14) and upgraded M3 Pro (12/18)! Needed this very video to make a decision. Gonna go for the base as it’s my first MBP (figured I probably wouldn’t need the upgraded one). Thank you so much!!! Liked!! 👍🏻
The CPU performance was actually more a bump than I expected, but the GPU was a bit disappointing. Usually the base Pro chips gives you the GPU performance of last gen's top GPU. i.e. Base M1 pro matching the 5600m, Base M2 Pro match the Top M1 Pro etc. This year your only getting the same performance as the Last gen's Base 16 core GPU. Normally that would be fine but for some reason in AU the base M3 Pro starts at 3500$ where as the Base M2 Pro started at 3100$
12-core vs. 11-core may not seem like an increase 'that's worth it', but it depends. It has 6 performance cores rather than 5, so for that aspect, it has the potential for 20% increase just based on the sheer number of performance cores alone, not counting the GPU increase of 14 to 18, which is a 29% increase in that aspect alone, and not counting the two additional GB of storage. For music production, it really is all about performance cores, and how many there are. Logic Pro, Ableton, and other DAWs do not use efficiency cores or GPU cores at all, so all that mesh/dynamic caching/ray tracing falderal just does not enter in to the equation if you are looking for more performance for music production. That's all just eyewash. A one-size-fits all Geekbench test doesn't really translate to what matters for music production. Bottom line, part of a buying decision for music producers will hinge on the sheer number of performance cores. You can trick out a MBP to $7200, but it will still have only 6 performance cores. So it seems the best thing to do is to consider either the 14" 12-core (6 P-core, $2400 with 1TB) or the base 16" (also 6 P-core, $2700 with 1TB) and either one will have 18 GB of unified memory already. The Max is overkill for music production, and it has only the same 6 P-cores as the M3 Pro. Actually, the original 8-GB M1 can handle well over 90% or better of what music producers need without even breathing hard, and it had only 4 performance cores, meaning the 11-core (5 P-core) base 14" M3 is also a good budget choice. Comparing M2 to M3 is not really helpful, unless you are considering an M2 refurb or a bargain bin sale of the still existing models on the shelf. The choices are all M3 when it comes to what you can buy, which is really the only reason a comparison matters other than regarding how different the present is to the past, which is irrelevant to whatever model you end up with. Only the present enters in to a buying decision.
I always imagine for music if the 8gb is ok, because new model means more efficient chip so for one non profissional project that carry maximum 20 tracks, i wondering if the 8gb base model is enough or like buy remorse not go with pro pro directly
You have there performance cores wrong for the M3 Max (tricked out, as you mentioned). It has 12 Perf cores and 4 Efficiency cores. That 16 cores, which is why the tests in Logic Pro are off the preverbial chain.
@@miabchdave Sorry, since those tests really are 'off the chain' I've narrowed my concentration to models that could both make a difference and matter, without me having to refinance my condo. IOW, M3 Max, Ultra, and beyond is not an option. It won't buy me anything I might need for music production, bc all the bells and whistles are things not used by Logic, and the M3 Pro already covers it. I don't need a Ferrari to get to work on time. And those models that make sense for Logic are two-the 12-core 14" M3 Pro MBP and the 16" M3 Pro MBP.
@@greccoox Well, I am living proof that the original M1 with 8 GB will work just fine for less than 100 tracks. it hasn't failed me yet. Yes, it is under memory pressure, but it never even breathes hard. The fan hardly kicks on. I might see a delay when playback is invoked directly after loading a project, but once loaded it stays in RAM and does not delay again. I do have buyer's remorse for not getting 16 GB in 2020, but not really bc of Logic. It has been commonly said that 8 GB of Apple unified memory is equivalent to 16 GB of RAM in a PC, but maybe that's just hyperbole.
Would it be possible to compare 16" M2 Max against M3 pro (1TB SSD, 18CPU/30GPU, 36GB). Prices of those models are at the moment same so I'm thinking which one to get. Thank you in advance!
I need more than 8GB of ram, not sure I need a pro-pro MacBook, but I’d put up the extra $200 for sure. The loss of on battery time? I’m usually plugged in. Extra fan? I’m not a fan of fans, coming from a M1 MBA. The extra port? I current don’t have any peripheral plugged in while using and if/when I do, I think 2 would be enough. I’d use the HDMI for an external monitor, no need for 2 external monitors. Not interested in black, although I haven’t seen it in person yet. My MBA is space gray and I’d rather have silver. So yeah, there I am buying a pro pro because I’m saying, for $200 more why not. Good job Apple. lol. My head tells me to wit to see what the M3 MBA presents…but, I hate waiting.
I think you should do a M3 Pro vs a M1 Pro because most people didn't upgrade from M1 Pro to M2 Pro, however they are considering to upgrade now as the gap is bigger.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation: 00:41 💰 The base level M3 Pro MacBook Pro is considered a good middle ground in terms of price and performance, with significant storage and memory upgrades from the previous model. 02:20 🏃♂️ The M3 Pro chip shows an 18% increase in single-core performance and a 17% increase in multi-core performance over the M2 chip, according to Geekbench benchmarks. 06:14 🖥️ The M3 Pro models have fewer GPU cores than their M2 counterparts, potentially affecting graphics performance, although the top-end M3 Pro model shows a 22% performance jump over the base M3 Pro. 08:14 🆙 For those considering an upgrade from an M1 Pro, the base M3 Pro may be worthwhile, but it may not be a significant jump from an M2 Pro, especially in GPU performance. 10:35 🚀 The M3 Max model may be more appealing this year for high-end CPU users, offering more significant performance increases than in previous generations. What about fan noise? I HATED the noise on Intel Macs and have heard that this M3 Pro can be pretty loud too due to only one fan. Should we wait for Macbook Air M3 instead?
I know how that is. I had a 2018 15” MBP with 32gb ram running windows 10 on parallels. I was playing a turn based WW2 game on windows and the fans were screaming. Played the same game on a 13” M1 MBP 16gb ram with windows 11 and I barely heard the fan at all. What a difference the M chips make.

QUESTION! I’m considering selling my trusty M1 Macbook Air with 16gb ram and getting 14” M3 Pro (either binned or unbinned). What do you think? Would that be a significant upgrade?
I’m looking at upgrading from my MacBook Pro retina mid 2015, I think k this is the one for me, thank you for addressing it! I had a hard time finding videos that discuss this chip and it was the one I was most curious about.
I have been seeing used refurbished MACBOOK PRO M1 Max fully maxed out for around $2500. Those originally went for around $7,000. I would almost think that would be a hard proposition to miss especially after watching your videos.
The problem is some apps like Logic Pro only use the performance cores, leaving the the E-cores free to run other lighter tasks. So on that case, not great to have only 5 P- cores on m3 pro …
What Mac are you using? I have a MacBook Air M2 chip with 8‑core CPU, 8‑core GPU, 16‑core Neural Engine, 16ram, 512gb ssd and I run Logic Pro X with almost 50-70 channels, multiple Serum (15), I use a lot of Kontakt stuff and mines does pretty well. I just got my M3 Macbook pro from Apple refurbished and I had a tough time deciding on whether I should get the M3 pro chip or not. They were the same price, here are the specs 14” macbook pro m3 8/10 cpu/gpu 24gb memory 1tb SSD Vs 14” macbook pro m3 pro 11/14 cpu/gpu 18gb memory 1tb SSD As you know, refurbished website is limited and had to make a quick decision. I’ll be using it for some video editing (nothing crazy) and some school work, MAYBE the occasional game or two. So I decided to just go with the M3 and decided more memory was better than more cores. I’d love to know ur thoughts on this!!! (Or anyone who sees this) 😊
9:50 - this is not true. I’ve been testing running script on database operations, and MacOS favours efficiency cores over performance cores and the Pro has a pool of 6 efficiency cores and the Max 4 and I’ve notice the max being superior in single thread performance because it’s less likely the task is being queued to an efficiency processor.

basically the difference with what you bought and the M3 Pro is that M3 Pro CPU is 13% faster than M2 Pro but the GPU is just the same with the M2 Pro. So just a little boost in performance, personally I think it's not worth the extra $240.

Hey Greg, can you test the battery life on the binned and unbinned m3 pro MacBook Pro. I ordered the unbinned version but I don’t know how much of a hit I’ll be taking for the battery.
I’d love to see this comparison as well. PCMag reported a 30-hour battery life for the unbinned version, compared to the 26-hour battery for the Max version.
@@kamranmirza5337 agreed, its pretty much just for fanfare purposes. Can’t wait to see how the real testing results pan out. Hopefully Notebookcheck does a comprehensive review of the Pro silicon. Their review of the base M3 model was pretty detailed
The MaxTech video comparing 8gb M3 to 16gb M3 was insane. Even for non pro users.. you just gotta upgrade the ram to unlock the M3 chip and have a better overall experience, plus less swap. Adding Ram made the M3 perform SO much better. My question would be how does the 24gb M3 fair against the 18gb M3 binned Pro.
What about the less Memory bandwidth for every m3 model, except the top tier m3 max? I guess it hasn’t hurt real world performance or is not noticeable?
I think Apple did their tests and worked out the extra bandwidth was not being used in the M2 and M2 Pro, so was overkill. They have downsized them to fit what they really need rather than pleasing spec-chasers.
I’ve been shopping for a replacement for my trusty late 2013 i7 Intel MBP with 16GB RAM and 1TB SSD. I didn’t want to downgrade on RAM and SSD so I’ve been looking at M2 Pro and M3 Pro 14 in with 16/18GB and 1TB SSD. I agree that the M3 Pro with 18GPU core may not be worth the $200. Basically B&H Holiday Sale made the decision easier for me by taking $300 off the 14 in M3 Pro with 18 core GPU 1TB SSD 18GB RAM. So at $2099 it’s cheaper than the base M3Pro with similar configuration. More memory would have been better to future proof the machine but since it wasn’t on sale, I would have had to fork out $700 more for just 18GB more memory which is just outrageous pricing…that’s getting very close to the M3 Max prices and definitely more than I wanted to spend. Overall, I’m happy to get this machine for $2099 and can only hope that it will serve me nearly as long as that trusty late 2013 MBP. 🤞
I'd love to hear about the comparison between 14" Macbook Pro with M3 Pro, and the 14" (or 16") Macbook Pro with M2 Max. Since M2 Max refurb will be close in price to the M3 Pro line of systems. Also has the change in architecture made any improvements to thermal management (throttling with the 14" system with M3 Max)?
Any input on the real world performance difference between my current 2020 M1 MBP 16GB 2TB, the base M3 Pro 11 core CPU, 14 core GPU, 18GB or 36GB, 2TB for ~$2400, and a nearly fully specced M3 Max with 16 core CPU, 40 core GPU, 64GB, 2TB for ~$3900? I mainly do high resolution photo editing (importing upwards of 1000+ raw 45mp images per day), converting raw CR3 files to DNG, working in Adobe Photoshop (generative AI) and Lightroom, 4k video editing and color grading in DaVinci Resolve and Final Cut Pro with Canon's enormous hard to work with H265 codecs. Along with general multi-tasking with all of these applications open at once, a dozen or more tabs in Chrome. All of these tasks seem to push my current 2020 MacBook Pro M1 16GB 2TB pretty hard, with tasks like DNG conversion taking 10+ minutes, imports in lightroom taking ages to load sometimes, some stutters and long renders while video editing.
Yes it's baffling as to why they reduced the bandwidth of the memory bus on the M3 Pro chip and reduced performance cores & GPU cores. Why go backwards instead of continuing to improve the designs?
I'm in the market coming from a base model intel MBP. I'm happy to see that there's a decent upgrade in CPU performance from the M2 Pro. As a developer, GPU doesn't really matter for me.
Thank you so much Greg for this clear explanation, as I was so confused between the options before I saw this video. Will be excited to see what the resulta are in your previous comments about the M3 pro and M3 Max performance to efficiency allocations and whether it will affect battery life between the 2 chip options and also the difference in the 14" and 16" chassis cooling / battery usage.
Love your videos and where you focus on a large degree of considerations, particularly whether a typical user would most benefit. I started with computers 45 years ago with 16K RAM and punched cards, and was demo’d a prototype Mac in 1983, so I bring a different experience to the picture. I think that a substantial majority of Mac users, however, don’t do video editing beyond the basics of maybe birthday or vacation videos “if they are ambitious”. I know that the multitude of UA-camrs doing Apple commentary and evaluations do, but I really wonder if the focus on the graphics cores is as important to most people. My main home box is an 11 year old Linux desktop, due for retirement as it runs 24/7 through that time. My gaming is either on my iPad (or previously Android tablets, which died too easily) or turn based on Linux, while I have had Apple TV boxes for my video viewing needs - I’m looking at a MacBook Air and an iMac, at least 16 GB for each, and it doesn’t sound like the fact that computing power isn’t increased so much as you move up the chip tree unless you go M3 Max and eventually Ultra doesn’t justify shooting higher at this point. Thanks for actually speaking to that.
I have a M1 MacBook Pro 13’ with 8GB of ram and 256. I’m considering either upgrading to this exact one or trying to find a M2 14’ on a discount. Any suggestions????
I seriously think Apple have missed a trick of categorising the lineup. I would drop the word “Pro” somewhat and have this lineup… -Mackbook M3 -Mackbook M3 Pro -Mackbook M3 Max That would make it much much easier for people to choose.
Nice to see the new MacBooks out in the wild. I just got one today, but I'm confused; it is the M3 Max binned model. I thought it was supposed to come out later in November, anyone else get their M3 Max MacBook Pro's early? Mine wasn't supposed to arrive until the 17th….
Nice early review for the Pro. No G6 compute? The main differentiator for M3 is ray tracing and though I think this is over-emphasised in computer reviews (as few actually use it) - it would be nice to see 3DMark Solar Bay results for this.
I'm in the decision between a M2 Max (12-Core/30-Core, 32GB RAM) and a M3 Pro (11-core/14-core, 18GB RAM). The numbers tell me to buy the M2 max model, but how's the real world performance difference? How much does RAM count in the new models?
Some other reviewer said that the programs doing the benchmarks are not updated to take into consideration some of the M3 "tech" benefits and just measures the cores or whatever; I am not sure if this is the case?
I get stuck on the fact that M2 Pro's 16gb ram is 200gb/s and M3 Pro's 18gb ram is 150gb/s. Which is actually better in terms of ram?? Less information can travel at once with M3, .. but it can.. store more information to be used at any given time compared to M2.. am I understanding this correctly?
Hi Greg - This is really helpful video. Can you also compare M2Pro (12 core) with M3Pro (12 core) ? I guess M2Pro (12 core, with 8P and 4E) is still better than M3Pro (12 Core with 6P + 6E). Thanks
It seems the M3 improved performance while keeping battery life the same, but on the M3 Pro they went for more battery life and kept performance about the same. You are also getting ray tracing feature which will make a bigger difference with certain programs in the future.
One thing I have never seen is reviewers compare the best macbook intel machines in terms of their gpu performance vs apple silicon! Are the last gen intel macbook equipped with more powerful gpus?
Please state full and exact specs at the start of these videos. Otherwise they are pointless. Which CPU and GPU variant exactly, how much RAM, and how much storage. Also there is something wrong with your charts - Cinebench 2024 multicore, that doesn't look like a 13% improvement. The M3 Pro bar looks about 20-25% longer. So something funky there with your charts.
ONLY buy the 36GB model. 18GB isn't enough. I bought the base M3 Pro 14" model with 18GB of memory and was swapping off the SSD with just normal use with 10-20 safari tabs open, 3-4 apps open, while listening to music, etc. If you just want to use your laptop and not have to worry about what's open all the time just spend the extra money now and get the 36GB option. Returned the 14", got the 16" 36GB model and I am MUCH happier. I was really worried about the portability of the 16" but the weight difference is negligible and the extra screen real estate is absolutely necessary imo.
I think when it comes laptop's comparing last gen is kind of pointless as most people buying the latest MacBook every year is likely less than 1%. More realistic to compare to m1 or Intel even. Most people even pros use the same laptop for 4 or 5 years sometimes longer. So for them the performance jump is substantial.

Yeah you sold me on the m3 pro! This video was exactly what I needed to see! Everyone showing the m3 max. I never had a MacBook ever 🔥🔥
This is the video I was looking for. Few focus on the M3 Pro chip, or it gets easily dismissed. But you took the time to show its good points. I think my mind was already made, and I do not need a more powerful machine, but I am now more comfortable with my choice :)
Coming from an Intel MacBook Pro, the difference will be amazing.
Literally was in the same situation
intel windows
even more amazing
like god level amazing
Every Macbook I've owned before the M-range was always eating up CPU doing practically nothing, cooking the system. I'm now enjoying have a laptop (M3 Pro) that actually seems to function like you'd expect any basic laptop to do when doing fairly simple (non-intensive) tasks.
The power of ARM based chips
I think most people are looking for a powerful future proved MacBook but not the Max Version which is way to expensive especially here in Germany (the base 14” M3 Max starts at 3.999 € 💀)
Im looking for an upgrade from my 2019 intel 16 inch base model to m2 pro or m3 pro.
I did this with my 16 inch refurbished 64gb, ram M2 Max, 2TB= 3900
That's my GO TO as well. But they don't let me finance it :(
I am not a big fan of refurbished, because once something start breaking, it tends to keep doing it.
Really looking forward to feedback on the M3 Pro chips on the MacBook Pro. Typing this from the 16" MacBook Pro with M3 Pro 12CPU 18GPU 18RAM 512SSD that I picked up a few hours ago!
How is your experience so far? I just ordered the same one as you, and I’m hoping I’ll be fine for atleast 7-8 years. What are you using it for?
Give it to me. And did you miss the touchbar? I did when I got my m1 pro
Not missing the Touch Bar just yet - hardly used it! Welcome back function keys!
What are you gonna use it for?
Criticism: I didn't like the bar charts, sorry. They are not linear and do not show the actual number and percentage on the graph. It's so easy to improve that I had to comment on it.
😂
I was thinking the same thing lol
So what would you like to see? I don’t understand the suggestion.
@@RealJoseph123I’m guessing linear charts that display numbers and percentages on the graph. Just a hunch. But then again, the suggestion wasn’t for you anyway so it doesn’t matter that you don’t understand.
Lmaoo this comment sounds like you don’t know how bar charts work
Thanks for the video. I'm upgrading from a 2017 Intel MacBook Air. The M3 Pro is exactly what I need to edit videos and photos and play some games.
Doing exactly the same... Upgrading from MacBoo Air 2017 to M3 Pro 18GB/512GB.... for streaming / video & Photo editing.
Right on. I suggest upgrading the RAM from 18GB to 36 GB. That way, it'll get some longevity out of it.
If that M3 MBP came with 16 gigs of ram stock, would be a harder sell.

it's the trp man, you are trapped by Apple's marketing strategy hahaha
I guess Apple gave only 8 GB of RAM to the base M3 Pro to not cannibalize sales in the binned M3 Pro model.
Weird decision by Apple. Only 8 GB for a 'Pro' model
@@leaningtower73 they wanna you to upgrade it 😄
Great video as always Greg!
My current MacBook is M1 Pro 32/512GB
I was wondering should I change mine with M3 Pro 18/512GB.
@@andyH_England They had to go in with the bang and launched at sweet spot, but now momentum is lost.
Still torn on that one but it's good to see more coverage on the entry M3 Pro.
what did you end up deciding on? i'm in the same boat
@@abrahamlee1774 Still saving up lol but I’ve pretty much decided on M2 pro unless it takes me until the next one coming out to get the funds. Either one is worth it imo but the 500 or so off is significant enough for me to tip the scales.
Thank you Greg! I opted for the MBP 14 base but upgraded the storage to 1TB. Hoping to keep this device around for awhile!
Is it m3 chip or m3 pro chip
@@BobMcBurger1 That’s when you fall into the Apple price ladder trap 😌
I also don’t need the 12 core but would prefer the 96W as a premium. But 1 tb is a must and what happens when I upgrade 1 tb to the 11c well you guessed it right few bucks short of the 12c base which comes with more +1 CPU, +4 GPU and 96W is default.

Appreciate your opinion! I bought a M2 pro on the 22nd of October with an education discoun. It cost 2118€ (gift card of 150 € included).
I'm so confused. I'm getting an m1 air.
The video that I was waiting for thanks Greg!!
I think you should do a M3 Pro vs a M1 Pro because most people didn't upgrade from M1 Pro to M2 Pro, however they are considering to upgrade now as the gap is bigger.

What's the single core performance advantage compared to the M1pro generation? 18% faster than the M2pro but what about the M1pro?
What about the less
Memory bandwidth for every m3 model, except the top tier m3 max? I guess it hasn’t hurt real world performance or is not noticeable?
Yeah apps don’t take advantage of that much bandwidth yet. Sometime in the future they will.
I think Apple did their tests and worked out the extra bandwidth was not being used in the M2 and M2 Pro, so was overkill. They have downsized them to fit what they really need rather than pleasing spec-chasers.
Well thanks for breaking it down. Still confused but at least I know I don''t have to go all the way to the Max model and waste money.
As a developer, GPU doesn't really matter for me.
would 14” m3 max be power limited like it was on the 14” m2 max? Please test it out.
For memory what’s better memory that I Can use for University Architectural Engineering Major⁉️
I'm curious about the gap between the 18 G and 36 G of the M3Pro
Thank you so much Greg for this clear explanation, as I was so confused between the options before I saw this video. Will be excited to see what the resulta are in your previous comments about the M3 pro and M3 Max performance to efficiency allocations and whether it will affect battery life between the 2 chip options and also the difference in the 14" and 16" chassis cooling / battery usage.
Super video - thanks for putting all this info together - which with the amount of chips and configurations available was no easy task!
I go way back to the Apple IIe and the 512K Mac. It is an entirely different world now!
Overall is the base M3 pro model worth it ?
I hope so because that’s what I’m looking at.
finally we have a review of m3 pro chip. That's what im loooking for
I just got mine yesterday love it.
I have a M1 MacBook Pro 13’ with 8GB of ram and 256. I’m considering either upgrading to this exact one or trying to find a M2 14’ on a discount. Any suggestions????
I seriously think Apple have missed a trick of categorising the lineup.
I would drop the word “Pro” somewhat and have this lineup…
-Mackbook M3
-Mackbook M3 Pro
-Mackbook M3 Max
That would make it much much easier for people to choose.
Very useful video, especially enjoyed the benchmarks and the discussion surrounding them.
I need a comparison between the M1 and M3 base models. I can't find a single video about it.
What about autonomy changes? 3nm process should has significant affect I believe
Hi Greg - This is really helpful video. Can you also compare M2Pro (12 core) with M3Pro (12 core) ? I guess M2Pro (12 core, with 8P and 4E) is still better than M3Pro (12 Core with 6P + 6E). Thanks
Same!
Coming from an i5 MacBook Pro this one is going to blow my mind, just ordered :)
Do you think running windows 11 with parallels on a 512 ssd M3 pro 14” is enough storage?
Thanks for the comparison video. Love to know the 1TB SSD Performance vs the 512GB one
me too
An M1 user here. I’m curious what real world usability would be like.
It seems the M3 improved performance while keeping battery life the same, but on the M3 Pro they went for more battery life and kept performance about the same. You are also getting ray tracing feature which will make a bigger difference with certain programs in the future.
The M3 pro went for less battery. With 12 hours wireless web compared to 17 hours
This helps me make my decision much easier, thank you.
I’m trying to find the one from with line thats going to work well with after effects.
Great video Greg best I've seen! What about that base ssd speed this year, is it slower?
Say “Binned” instead of “base level”. It’ll help
And what about the storage? I'm thinking of 2TB
Your bar charts are very misleading, they should be linear.
