How Did Whales Get So Big?

  • Whales have had a few lucky breaks to get as big as they are: they have lungs that take deep breaths of air with that sweet high level of oxygen and have a fantastic meal in a ton of krill!

Also temperature. At they get bigger, surface area to volume ratio decreases, so heat regulation becomes harder and harder, and at a critical mass they said the animal would just get cooked alive. However, in the cold water I assume thermoregulation would be much easier allowing larger critical mass

If anyone is asking about why sauropods like Argentinosaurus and Brachiosaurus are so big without water carrying most of their weight, it's because sauropods have less dense bones and a network of air sacs connected to their respiratory system that run through their bodies. This was a highly efficient way of breathing, so efficient, avian dinosaurs (birds) use a similar adaptation to assist in powered flight.

Being bigger also needs more energy and therefore more food. We did actually learn about this in biology classes that for most species, there's actually this wave of size where they first tend to get bigger, because being bigger and stronger is an evolutionary advantage, until there isn't enough food for the bigger ones, which makes the smaller ones survive because now needing less food is an evolutionary advantage, which makes the species grow smaller overall until there is enough food again where they will start growing again because once more, being stronger is the advantage, and this keeps happening creating this kinda wave of size.

@@poliincredible770 Oh don't start. Scientist don't "presume" anything. Evolution has been proven time and time again through DNA, Fossils, modern animals overtime, and more. You just refuse to research and frankly it's honestly rude to just assume everyone should just blindly follow your made up religion when they shouldn't as it is not a mandatory thing to do in life. Mind your own business next time.

    • @poliincredible770
      @poliincredible770 2 роки тому

@@aangmaster9392 scientists make presumptions all the time. The scientific method starts with a hypothesis, which is a presumption. The hypothesis is either validated or invalidated through observation of testable, repeatable, verifiable research. The transition of a non whale to a whale has not been observed, tested, repeated, or verified. It has only been presumed.
DNA cannot verify the transition. DNA is coded information, so if an arm is needed, the code for an arm is required; if scales are needed the code for scales is required; if lungs are needed, the code for lungs is required, etc. No scientist has observed a land dwelling creature develop flippers by changing its DNA tho. The only time we have seen a change regarding the input of coded information it was the deliberate, willful result of an intelligent creator. DNA is not evidence of an ancestor in common, but evidence of a creator in common. Therefore it is logical to conclude the God who used a DNA code to make lungs in land dwelling creatures used a similar code to make lungs in whales. It is not logical to conclude a land dwelling creature decided to “take its lungs with it” into the water and develop a new body plan.
Fossils cannot prove evolution. A fossil can’t tell us what features its parents had, let alone what characteristics its great, great, great... grandparents had. So to look at the fossils of two different kinds of creatures and assume one descended from the other is not a logical conclusion, it’s an illogical presumption. Fossils actually verify the Bible. Scientists have come to realize that fossils require a very specific set of circumstances to create. The specimen must be buried rapidly or else scavengers and the elements will destroy the remains. It would require something like a global flood to bury a large number of creatures as massive as the dinosaurs.
Modern animals have not verified evolution. Bacteria that develop a stronger immunity than their predecessors are still bacteria. Bacteria that produce bacteria cannot be used as proof that bacteria descended from non bacteria. Birds that produce offspring with smaller beaks cannot be used as evidence that non birds can produce birds.
At least wait until a bird produces something with front legs, or some feature no other bird has before you let Darwinists tell you they have evolved.
Look up the work of leading scientists like Dr. James Tour, Dr. Michael Denton, Dr. Michael Behe who have debunked Darwin’s unobservable untenable hypothetical theory.
Believers don’t have to blindly follow Christ. The Bible has been verified. Archeologists use the Bible to understand artifacts being unearthed in the Middle East and other places today. It is documented history my friend. Please don’t be a history denier. Accept Christ.

@@poliincredible770 I'm gonna reply to each of the paragraphs you wrote cuz damn I didn't ask for a novel.
1: It is not presumed, it is merely pieced together like a puzzle. Case and point, the whale skeleton near where its tail is has these two little tippy taps that one would presume to be "fins" but as it turns out those two little fins have skeletal toe structures. Why would they have that? Clearly they've evolved long enough that through each generation for millions of years that part of the body shrunken overtime as it is now considered useless. Like the appendix for humans, that used to be a specific organ that digests grass but since we don't really need that anymore, that organ shrunken down and is now a ticking time bomb of bacteria for some people that need it removed.
2: DNA IS evidence of a common ancestor as it has been proved time and time again that apes for example are the closest relatives to humans. No we did NOT come from them, we had the same ANCESTORS as them. We just evolved differently. And no, that's not how genetics work. You can't simply create a new body plan, the body itself through each generation has to rearrange what it's got, that's how it works. The ONLY way it can create new information to DNA is MUTATION. And if it works it'll stick and spread to each generation to adapt it and perfect it. Fins of whales are not the same as the fins of a fish. Again the innards of a whale's fin has skeletal FINGERS in its fin, they're not the same. That's why the lungs are still with them, you can't rewrite lungs, you have to adapt. Which is why blowholes are a thing and they come up to the surface. It's not created, it's adapting. The shark-like body shape is obviously the best example of a shape that's best suited for swimming so the body adapts
3: I've already explained the bone skeletal thing for whales so I'm gonna explain the fossils for you. Dinosaurs did NOT live amongst humans. The reason why so many Dinosaurs are buried this deep is because they've been gone for MILLIONS OF YEARS. So of course land animals like them will have their skeletal structures almost intact by the dirt and not get destroyed by elements. They weren't buried by people or a creator at random places, that's just bonkers. Whale skeleton however is much harder to preserve overtime as it is IN WATER, they float and get rearranged by currents. Which is why a full skeleton of a Megalodon is impossible to find perfectly neat and stacked. While skeletons of whales found in desert (smaller mind you) have been found in deserts due to a body of water that used to be there got dried up. Also one word, ASTEROID. You also forget not all dinosaurs lived amongst eachother. We're actually far closer to the existence of the T-Rex than it is to the Stegosaurus. So if you think they just lived together like 'land before time' or 'Jurassic Park' then you need to grow up. If you really think "noah just didn't let them on the ark" then I'm sorry that's not a valid enough excuse. Ice age animals are easier to find compared to dinosaurs cause unlike them, they were only gone for thousands instead of millions so the natural elements didn't have enough time to Bury them deep. If you still think they live in the same time period then I can't help you.
4: Modern animals like Dogs, birds, and even fishes have proven evolution. Dogs are the quickest since they themselves weren't made by natural selection, they were selected by us. It took us thousands of years to turn wolves, the ancestors of dogs who are still alive today, into man's best friend with different breeds. These guys didn't create new things, it's literally still a canine but they still developed differently. That's how you know bodies change eventually through adaptation. Birds are the decendents of dinosaurs that survived the extinction event so again you're wrong. After the events of the asteroid the smaller species survived and needed to adapt. Which is why even some birds still have small teeth in their beaks. And lastly the biggest defining trait and proof of human evolution but in a minor scale, Human skin and features of different race. Every human in existence, their ancestors started in Africa. The farther away early humans migrated the lighter their skin became due to melanin not needed much during areas with not much sunlight. Again ADAPTATION. Heck were not even 100% homosapiens due to our interbreeding with neanderthals and denisovans, which by the way, another proof that humans aren't created if we used to have our own branch like the other apes.
5: Every scientist and anyone with a basic understanding of Evolution would tell you that Darwin's theory on evolution is bullsh*t and is not how actual evolution works. He merely kickstarted it. Just cause a caveman invented a stone wheel thats good for rolling doesn't mean it's good for a modern car. We merely perfected his idea and is now a common fact. We thank him for kickstarting it but his general idea of evolution is false.
6: I'm not denying history, I'm denying fairy tales. I'm not gonna follow christ since I don't believe nor want to, as it is not mandatory and you can't tell me what to do. I live my life accordingly and I'm perfectly happy the way I am.
Is it really that hard to grasp people can actually live a fulfilling and happy life without blindly following your religion? Learn to accept it and maybe this world would have less fighting.

Last I checked it’s not actually that animals get too big to carry their own weight, but rather too big to pump the blood throughout their bodies due to Gravitational forces, along with various other factors like oxygen in the air and so on, but I don’t think animal’s weight plays that big a factor since they could evolve to reduce weight with hollow bones for example or maybe even more bones/stronger bones or majority cartilage.
