40 PSI max. I used a 12VDC portable tire inflator as my bike tire pump didn't connect well. It's a simple ball BB valve that is stuck from gas gunk. Spray some electronic circuit cleaner (nothing else) down the small tube (called the purge tube) a few times applying air between sprayings. It should un-stick the valve BB. The cleaner is pure ether, so it will fully evaporate and not damage the charcoal inside, but will dissolve the gas gunk. I did mine on an 86 Truck with a 22RE (fuel injection) that has a breather hose on the bottom that you have to plug or crimp to get the air to exit the small purge line on top. Flows like new
There's actually a good chance you can flush them out with water. Did it on several. Water, then compressed air, several times until your waterstream is clear. Maybe a few drops of heet and blow it out with compressed air before reinstalling. $200 saved.
Just to be clear, there's 3 takeoff points for hoses on that type of cannister. A large one on top that supplies air to the tank when the engine is running (otherwise no fuel would exit the tank as a vacuum situation would be created.) A large takeoff at the base of the unit plumbed to the top of the tank. This is how the petrol vapour rises into the charcoal cannister. The small takeoff at the top beside the larger one goes to the intake manifold and draws any vapour into the engine. The unit I have has a small vacuum activated valve that opens the top larger line to atmosphere (acts as an air vent for the petrol tank) when the engine starts. I'm open to correction on this as I'm in the process of fitting the cannister to a classic car.
Thank you for the video I have the same setup weber carburator . So since their are no line to the carburetor do you terminat that canister port all I have is a line from the tank in to the canister and I smell Gas fumes please help anyone
Quick question, if the line to the fuel tank from the canister is ruptured, could air get into the tank through the ruptured line and cause a lean mixture ? then cause stalling and rough idle?
The check valve may be no good. My 1992 Mazda E2000 truck original manufactured with a metal push on cap but addition of motor home house saw filler hose added and a new pressurised cap which caused a major fuel leak from the charcoal canister through the return line. Drilled a tiny hole into the inside blue centre of the fuel cap and no more pressure because it could breath.
my renault clio has a clicking noise coming from canister-- mechanic said it was faulty solenoid but seemed unsure if it needed replaced or not-car has been using more petrol of late and is a bit sluggish at times also my emmisions light has been coming on and off although he has changed both oxygen sensors on cat(only 2 on car)as this is what scan showed up-should i replace the charcoal cannister?
figured this out in a gas station parking lot after it wouldn't start. popped the hood and it was leaking. got it started after banging the around with vise grips
What causes the canister to get clogged? Bad gasoline? Fuel additives? I have a 2012 Tacoma with 77,000 miles and the Check Engine light and Trac Light came on. Long story short, extended warranty covered the $667 cost. I am just curious as the possible reasons because my truck is not old and this could have been the death of me if I had to pay out of pocket... Thanks
This is an old comment but I would just like to say, I have seen a Charcoal Canister crack under 80k miles from someone "topping off" their gas all the time at the pump. Not saying you did this, but I have seen overfilling the gas tank cause the problem.
Is the damage only cause by repeated topping off? I did top off one time by $1.20, but it wasn't for the reason of topping off but because I thought the click wasn't holding the nozzle handle down.
hey, this doesn't apply to this kind maybe, but I have the kind that is under the car ( truck actually) it's bigger and black plastic, pretty durable, anyway i was trying to clean it out of DUST that I was finding was being sent into my gas tank and fouling out my fuel pump filters causing me to go through 4 ( now 5 ) fuel pumps in the last few months. i was cleaning it by using a air compressor, I did not block air from coming out, i was just shooting air in the container, plan was to keep doing that till I saw no dust. well at some point, something inside the thing shut - some valve or compartment or something, and while I was holding this canister against my gut with my hand holding it tight it exploded. im not kidding, it was so loud my ears are still ringing, I got the wind knocked out of me. shrapnel bits got me but nothing serious. it was a big explosion though, i think I just got lucky, the parts flew all over my 2 1/2 bay garage . im just posting this so it doesn't happen to someone else. it really seemed to be a great pan and i was thinking i was saving some dough ( about 100 bucks ) Im going to get another one tomorrow from a U pull it yard, i don't have a 100 bucks, or time to wait on shipping. LOL
I did this on the gas tank line now I have gas steady flow out of the line Non-Stop truck run terrible had to close off the line in order to just drive the truck, replaced the charcoal canister still same problem can anyone help me out on this.
I don't know why. They are a ripoff to buy too. I don't need to really replace this since I have on an aftermarket Weber carburetor. But on any car after 1996, it would throw a diagnostic code and you'd fail inspection. That's another reason I like the old stuff. This Suzuki has an adapter kit that can run the 1.6 VW diesel that gets super gas mileage. I'd go that route if the engine wore out but this engine is still running like new.
I need to know about the line coming from the charcoal canister going towards the motor but this line is cap but when I turned the key to start my truck it spill's gas from where it is cap how is that
one of the lines is cut on my canister, I took all the emissions stuff out of my 85 camaro and put a Holley 650 on and all the holes on the engine where the old hoses went were plugged but is it OK to just take the hole canister out or do I have to leave it, cause the line going to the tank is still hooked up but I was thinking of clamping it. I want to put another battery in the spot of the canister
thanks im going to disconnect right after emissions drill a hole in the cap and get that garbage out of my engine bay along with the AC and the cruse control and the vacuum shift on the fly crap
I have a 99 vw jetta 2.8 and when i plug in the hose on the back of the upper intake manifold that goes to the leak detection pump the car just stalls out for some reason?

I have a 1976 AMC Gremlin 3.8 6 straight. It has 3 prong hoses. The purge one is broken. Where does the purge hose.goes to! Thank you so much!
From the charcoal canister?
Love your idea of hollowing it out! LOL I've actually done that to catalytic converters too!!!
Thank you for the video I have the same setup weber carburator . So since their are no line to the carburetor do you terminat that canister port all I have is a line from the tank in to the canister and I smell Gas fumes please help anyone
Thanks alot man. Your a Good Man. God bless you. For posting These videos. mini oscolator. Not enought money so gonna try. Emp
You can clean them. Spray some WD or carb cleaner into the ports to free up the stuck "bb" that works as a check valve. Simple and easy.
Quick question, if the line to the fuel tank from the canister is ruptured, could air get into the tank through the ruptured line and cause a lean mixture ? then cause stalling and rough idle?
very helpful video, Thank you..:)

I read that if it's clogged then you'll get negative pressure on the tank causing it to choke and give you bad fuel pressure.
I think thats why my 1997 Corolla is having those issues.
i have a 92 camaro and is leaking gas out of the canister is that a symptom of it being clogged
In that case the canister has a crack and it needs to e replaced.
What would happen if the line was clogged ? Mines is leaking from the bottom
I have 91 Toyota Corolla and smells a lot of gas on the canister. And waist gas like crazy. Also can be clogged too?
yes, likely
Could the vapor canister keep the truck from running tho?
Can I remove this from my 71 Pinto? I have stock carb and the canister connects to the air cleaner?
What causes the canister to get clogged? Bad gasoline? Fuel additives?

+GILBERT PEREZ probably moiture in the gas rusts a check valve.

So why did it explode?
What happens when your charcoal canister is clogged???

Could this cause the truck to turn of after like 20 minutes of runing
Is there a purge valve in between the canister and tank or canister and carb?
no, none
what happens if you just disconnect the hoses
My question is...how does it get clogged...it's evaporated gas, no particulate. Does the charcoal sink-settle-get brittle and clog?

Yes

My line is plugged up with charcoal.
Shoot it full of WD40. It as a flap that freezes or corrodes. May take a couple of shots and a couple of days.
Gas mileage will suffer about 3-5 MPG when the fuel vapor charcoal canister is not working properly.
my purge cannister in my 89 chevy truck stinks all the time
da bears
I have a 99 vw jetta 2.8 and when i plug in the hose on the back of the upper intake manifold that goes to the leak detection pump the car just stalls out for some reason?
Thanks for the helpful video!
