- The Asia-Pacific War of 1937-1945 has deep roots. It also involves a Japanese society that’s been called one of the most distinctive on Earth. If there were a Japanese version of Captain America, this would be his origin story.

The big Kahuna comes through again
Here from MSSP. What's great about this so far is the way Carlin approaches the psychology of the Japanese. Probably the best I've heard it explained
The dawgs love history🫡
Oh yeah for sure dude Carlin gives such a classic Tokyo partner perspective
Akira Kurosawa said that when he walked to work a few hours before the emperor had declared the surrender, every person he saw was grim faced and preparing for battle and death. Tradesmen were sharpening their knives; women were constructing spears. When he walked back home after the emperor's announcement, it was like a different world. Grocers and restaurants had their doors open, and were cheerily calling for customers. Everyone had relaxed and gone back to smiling and living their lives. He had grown up in that fanatical pre-war society, but even so he was absolutely astonished at the complete change people had undergone in so brief a time.
That is undeniably a peculiar and strange culture.
Tenno Showa did his duty at the end & saved millions of lives. RIP sir......
@@eastockerable Or you know, could've stopped the war before millions had died. He deserves all the blame
Another remarkable detail is he still showed up to work when the country has been just bombed to ashes and invasion was imminent
World World II was insane.
Imagine sitting in London, just chillin' on your favorite tuffet,...
but...
every so often...
an overhead, whistling sound interrupts your tea and crumpets right before a V2 explodes your favorite fish & chips restaurant.
That would just really stress me out.

I searched “supernova in china” looking for the supernova that was recorded by Chinese astronomers during the 11th century. This came up, but I also love the pacific theater of WW2 so I ended up staying. Great content.
There’s quite a few episodes to this one!
His series on WW1, WW2 and nuclear weapons are also excellent

Damn I'm old enough to remember this story of that Japanese soldier in the local newspaper. I also remember my father, a WW2 veteran, shaking his head in amazement and incredulity at the persistance of this fellow.
mickor God forbid Western countries preserve their cultures, eh? That is what this surge in nationalism is aimed towards.
There are no parallels to be drawn between the past extreme nationalism and patriotism of the Japanese and the modern rejection of the notion that Western nations have no culture worth preserving.
mickor i am not a westerner. But i can sypathise where they are coming from.

How do you suppose someone makes the logical leap from "I fucking LOVE Polish hussars" --> "let's kill all minorities"?
Fascism always leads to murder. Yours is not exempt.
Zombi Pineapple
What do you mean by Fascism? The 1930s Italian syndicalist movement, or generic statism? Marxists always appropriate terms with commonly-accepted definitions and relativize them to their historical dialectic. By defining Fascism = murder, you've conflated ideas/speech with actions and thus legitimize violence against whoever you see as committing wrongthink. This is consistent with the ideology of Dialectical Materialism, by far the most murderous ideology ever conceived in human history.

Yeh I did some reading on japanese opinions on other asians during the era. Damn racism was a cornerstone of everyone. They thought they were the superior asians o.0. God history is great..always something new to learn
my favorite college history course was on the renaissance in europe and the professor started in prehistory. He only took two or three classes to get caught up to the time period of the class but it really did help the context of everything.
He actually went back further than that. He referenced Tokugawa Shogunate and the Battle of Sekigahara which was 1600 AD. Tokugawa Ieyasu started the Tokugawa Shogunate.
And that height of the Samurai warfare that Dan referenced was even further back than that. Sekigahara was the grand finale to it
All that to say, Dan is the man
Sengoku Jidai
I really wish that someone would add visual illustrations like maps, pictures and references to this video! so the listener could get an even more immersive experience to the amazing history Dan is providing !
I usually just listen to this in the background but sure it would be good to look at some images from time to time.
I occasional wander off to google images (the Australian, which is an image I hadn't seen, for example). Usually I'm looking through a microscope, so just listen to him.
@@candemirayak8981 I have thought about doing that but I'm concerned about legal issues
Personally I just prefer Dan's narrative and word pictures. If you need illustrated histories there are a number of other sites who do this quite well.
@Noah H haha shit me too lookin at random china provinces, the weapons used, the picture of the Japanese soldier beheading from time mag etc. I'm sure Dan could get an editor for free especially if Rogan said he was looking one on the next podcast be a lot of work but also some serious work experience for your future job prospects people
As a Chinese, I feel extremely empathetic about this episode. The history from 1840s to 1949 is a tragic nightmare for us during which China used to be invaded by almost all the western countries, Russia and Japan. And among all the invasion, China suffered most from that of Japan during WWII. I appreciate that Dan gives very specific detail about the history of this period, a lot of which is written in the Chinese History textbook.
Git gud commie y'all bout to get another nightmare
@C J I think he’s talking about imperial Russia, not the USSR. The USSR has border skirmishes with China, but those occurred after 1949.
Yat - Sen China and Japan were victims of the same enemy.
And after that was Mao Zedong, the most murderer in history.
@Peter Engert learn some history bro, you are on a great channel, with great content, strawmanning a nation of over 280 million people into being evil is nothing short of ignorant. I encourage you to learn, not to accuse.
It's great seeing all the new love for Hardcore History ❤
i came here because my history teacher made me watch this for an assignment but like.. this podcast actually slaps so hard
My father left Japan at 16 years old to avoid being put into the Imperial Army, only to be interned at drafted in 442 . Great work on this podcast ,my first one. Looking forward to hearing the rest.

I'd already listened to this series, but watching that movie made me want to immerse myself in the Japanese culture of the time all over again.
Well done, Mr. Carlin. Your show has a quite rare aspect of timelessness and nuance.

"I hope I mispronounced that name properly"
Such a delightful error.
I think I was listening to "Celtic Haulocaust" recently where he mentions an old quip about Latin: "There is both a right way and a wrong way to mispronounce Latin."
So Dan's familiar with finicky pronunciation and jokes about finicky pronunciation. I wouldn't put it past him to make that joke.
thats a pretty obvious intentional joke.
@@bezahltersystemtroll5055 Since the time I originally listened to this and made this comment, I listened to all his stuff from the beginning and heard him talk about where he got the idea of the right and wrong way to mispronounce things. Good stuff.
Given how controversial or grotesque this got, I still admire how wholesome and supportive this section of the community is. We're all here for the exact same thing Dan is, just a love for history.
Even though there are few dislikes for this podcast, I am confused as to why there are any dislikes at all.
What didn't you like about this ?
I find them to be incredibly entertaining and intriguing deep dives into the background and circumstances that spawn these world-changing events.
You couldn't pay me enough money in High School to care about these subjects.
Now I pay gladly to hear Dan's take on them.
An earlier commenter suggested that these be made into BBC documentaries, however I think that this self-produced model is perhaps more efficient, and less likely to be interfered with by people more interested in money and agendas.
Want more like this?
Pay the man for his dedication and skill.
Dan, 'Blueprint for Armageddon' 1-6, is the most fascinating thing I've ever listened to.

Dan, your content and devotion to history is something that is vastly underappreciated. You have such a great way of getting so much information out in an unbiased and very interesting way. I have yet to find one of your podcasts that does not keep me riveted until the end. If there were more social studies teachers like you in our school systems we would be a much better country. Keep up the great work, you have a huge fan here in Minnesota

How true I've been fascinated by history since I was a kid. And despite the horrible experiences of a couple bad teachers I still hold that flame for a fascinating subject
New Hardcore History on UA-cam. This will get me through my next work shift. You're awesome Dan Carlin .
The sheer volume of important histories that are continually and systematically overlooked by academia is astounding. There are perspectives out there that could enrich our understanding of history and those avenues are frequently left unexplored.
Where exactly do you think Dan learned about all this?
@@jorenvanderark3567
OP is referring to modern “1st world” Western academias, not to scholarly(+) endeavors, institutions and so overall.
Been reading about early modern Japan recently, specifically their transformation from a feudal society in the late 19th century into a thoroughly modern "Western" country at a time when their contemporaries in Asia were being carved up by Imperial Powers. An amazingly interesting period for anyone interested in Japan or World History.
Can highly recommend the two books I am working my way through:
A Diplomat in Japan - Ernest Satow (First hand account of the life of the interpreter for the British Legation)
Samurai Revolution - Romulus Hillsborough (Very well researched look into the larger political crisis and the life of one of the many interesting figures caught up in the crisis)
Thank you for all the work you do Dan! Keep Reading History Fans!

Speaks volumes about the dumbing down of academia
While Dan Carlin's podcasts are great, there is something a little extra special about his introductions that just grabs me every time. Love it.
I had a history teacher in high school like that, he opened his discussion about the descent of Weimar Republic's into the Nazis with something to the effect that these were highly intelligent people, one day they were debating homosexuality, then they were committing genocide. Using a micro, to introduce a macro is alway an effective way of bringing someone into the psychology, culture and society of a certain population during the time in history where they made their mark.
I Just finished this series. All 25 hours of it! This is the most detailed account of Japans involvement in WWII that I've ever come across. Carlin breaks down the series of events leading up to WWII from start to finish in a way that can only be described as the most engaging history lesson that you could ever imagine. It's heroic, humbling, horrific and detailed in an unbiased journalistic style that's unforgettable. Bravo Sir!
That feeling of joy you get when a new hardcore history is out is directly correlated to the feeling of despair after you've already listened to it several times over three days and realize there's four months until the next one is released.
Best podcast hands down, the effort he puts into it is worth the interludes between episodes.
Dan, you are the literal best. As a teacher, you make my job super easy and interesting. The kids and adults alike ALL love your stuff. This latest iteration is no different.

In the 1960s Admiral Yamamoto's Son, his wife and his grandchildren lived in the Oak Cliff section of Dallas Texas. They were members of the Kiestwood Baptist Church. One of my best friends attended that church and took me over to their home. He was friends with one of the boy's. We went fishing in a creek nearby with him. I'll never forget the huge portrait of Admiral Yamamoto they had over their fireplace. Adorned with what looked like a shrine. From what I can remember. It was 1966 and I was 11 years old. Strange times where I lived. Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Yamamoto family and Oswald all living within 5 square miles of my Oak Cliff Dallas Texas neighborhood.
DJ DAN Carlin on the mic, laying down fat histories
To form the most accurate understanding of history, you have to examine every perspective and account of events, and cross reference each of them, see what events are agreed upon by all and understand intimately each perspectives goals and aspirations. All the while being unbiased... Takes a certain psychological archetype to be a true historian, and Dan is certainly that
Respect
I remember when this used to be the best podcast ever. Then I listened to the entire library of content, and realized I had to wait 8 months for the next 2-3 hour podcast.
Dan Carlin is a national treasure.
The BBC really should make documentary series for tv out of your podcast series. They are fantastic.
My parents showed me a PBS documentary that they recorded last time I was over. I was super excited when I saw Dan Carlin interviewed.
Or maybe Amazon as they have done it for the podcast Lore, and Dan blows that one away.

There was a Gilligan's Island episode that dealt with a Japanese soldier that was still fighting WWII. If memory serves it was the episode when a Mini Sub with a Japanese Soldier shows up on the Island. I was a young kid in the 70's & I do recall hearing of at least one Japanese soldier. I think, it's more that I recall my grandfather's reaction to it.
