@@Gantzz321 You're the one that got it wrong. Slight spoiler but later on its mentioned that the current Emperor took Lishu back as his concubine after his fathers death to protect her and refuses to touch her stating that he found his fathers tastes in women disgusting (specially because of his own mothers age when he was born) it is subtle but it is very clear that the past emperor liked his concubines to be VERY young
7:27 Yeah. The current emperor only took the younger girl on as a means of protecting her from people like his father. He doesn't touch or visit her, her status is purely so others don't mess with her.
Yeah when you consider the fact that her family basically sold her to be abused by the previous emperor. It's understandable that he brought her back as a way to protect her, because there's no way her family wouldn't have just sold her again.
When she started getting more hairpins, I totally expected her to reach the end of the episode wearing them like a crest, like she was some demented xenomorph queen. XD
Something to take note of, when Maomao declared the food was poisoned, as Maomao exited past Lishu's food taster, the food taster had the look of fear in her eyes. She realized that had she not swapped the food, she would have been the one ingesting the poison instead of Maomao.
@@Pochitaman30 Lishu is such a good character, too. Once you learn about her situation and history, you want nothing but to protect her. I'm still waiting to see if Lishu got her happy ending in the books. (I've only read through volume 8, so far)
@@Ncyphen Right? I feel so sorry for Lishu and just wish someone could slap those 🐶 in waiting like how Maomao did to that other 🐶 in waiting back in episode 4. Glad that the food taster is at least on her side now but dang it get rid of those harpies.
I love the quiet threat to the food taster. Reminding her that if the consort has a reaction, and is seriously injured or dies next time, the taster's life is forfeit. Not just her life, but likely her family would suffer consequences too to "root out the conspiracy". Also, that she has to step up her game, and take her role even more seriously than others as a result. That there are things that she would be unaffected by in the food, and so could slip past her as "not poison" that she must still be on her guard against. Even if the next time was an accident or carelessness, it would look to everyone else in the palace that the taster intentionally poisoned her mistress.
This also showcases Maomao’s fairness too. She didn’t slap the food taster silly like she did with the lady in waiting in episode 4, because the food taster genuinely didn’t know Lishu had allergies before and simply thought it was a harmless prank. The ladies in episode 4 were given repeated warnings but they ignored the advice and kept using the white make up powder. I believe they were informed about it on at least 3 separate occasions so you can understand why Maomao definitely needed to administer a beat down.
I appreciate that the series is not only willing to go there with how disgusting the previous emperor was, but call it out properly with Maomao’s reaction. No “it is what it is” dismissal, but immediate, shuddering disgust. Part of why I appreciate it is because it shows how messed up the power dynamics are, as it’s clear people would not have been okay with it, but they enabled it anyway.
Yeah, but another thing to add, since this would is heavily inspired by Ancient China, is that the youngest age their Age of Consent has been set to was 14 and pairings with age gaps of greater than 10 years were also generally looked down upon. Basically, this would be seen as disgusting and quite the scandal even in ancient times.
@@peggedyourdad9560even up to this day, the age of consent is around 14years old almost everywhere. because we all know... teenagers once they hit puberty they will go out looking for a partner. but even back then, under 14 was seen as absurd in most cultures
Good thing the current emperor never touches Lishu since he despised his own father the previous emperor for having concubines who are too young plus the current emperor's mother gave birth to him at very young age so he probably didn't like that. The previous emperor totally had a very weird preferences towards women.
Ladies-in-waiting: "She endured two months of awful bullying at the Crystal Pavilion..." Oh, Maomao wasn't trapped with them. They were trapped with her.
I find it funny how Maomao is rizzing up several of the high-ranking mebmbers of the court, when she just wants to lay low and make drugs. A very Based protagonist.
spoiler alert for book 2 the previous emperor was much more broken than a piece of shit. his taste in women(girls rather) were reprehensible even for the time but the reason he is this way is at least as fucked up

I love that you're beinng tolerant and understanding towards Lishu, since you know she's just a child after all. Also the "kabedon" scene in the manga, is way spicier since Maomao using one of the techniques her sister taught her by putting her knee in the bully girl thighs.😂
Of all the iconic Maomao moments, the most iconic might be “Kore, doku desu.” It was at the very beginning of the anime’s first PV, and IIRC was featured in the next one after that. Even before the anime’s announcement, I remember seeing the Nekokurage manga’s version circulated on Reddit more than once.
Yeah apparently the previous Emperor had a particular type of woman he liked. But he was Emperor in ancient not!China so who would speak up against that?
Moamao gets physical when she loses her patience. She gives people a chance the first time she tells them, then if they continue after is when she gets pissed. She hit that other lady in waiting because of the fact that the powder was banned and meant to be confiscated. Maomao will always give people a chance to change the first time, and lose patience the second.
For those curious the scene at 15:00 is slightly altered in the anime. In the LN the blowfish poison had partially paralysed her facial muscles so her smile from before was stuck on her face. Edit 1: Also yes, the previous emperor only touched "Young" girls willingly, but more than that is spoiler territory, as would be the details on the young Virtuous consorts position. I can remind folks that the current Emperor is a breasts man. Edit 2: In regards to Maomao attempting to build up a resistance to buckwheat, that is actually the method used to deal with allergies today. Maomao has an anaphylactic reaction (I think that is the proper term) which can result in suffocation. Her warning to the other taster is very much a "Do this again, and you may be following your lady into death" but the notes were likely genuine medical advice.
The previous emperor was only interested in little girls. He was an absolutely disgusting, horrible human whose tastes are reviled by his son, the current emperor. I just find it fascinating they include that imperial family drama at all, because it doesn't really serve to impact the plot at all besides paint the current emperor as a relatively sensible human being despite having a monster for a father.
I’m sure it serves to establish a future plot point to explain how the empress dowager managed to give birth to a second son 10 years after her first born when the former emperor’s interest was exclusively into little girls
While others have pointed out that previous Emperor was a piece of work, it should also be said that Lishu was almost certainly protected. There's some spoilers but I will say that the Empress Dowager wasn't too keen on her husbands habits and by the time that Lishu came around he was probably too afraid of his wife to actually do anything. And not in a funny way because the entire previous royal court was messed up.
I'm going to somewhat defend Lishu's taste tester, because while what she did was wrong, it's clear she did not understand the implications of her actions. You can clearly see in her face the horror of how badly things could have gone from her little prank, so I don't think she needs to be slapped. That episode 4 slap, however, was entirely deserved because the lady in waiting willfully ignored orders and continues to use the lead face powder, and even boasted of doing so when confronted. With Lishu's tester, I feel this scare was sufficient re-education.
I'm gonna recommend Moriarty the patriot for the next anime to react to. Its 24 episodes of some of the most underrated anime I have seen in my life. Like fantastic story, bopping music, great characters and for some reason it flew under everyone's radar

Also if you think gold and silver are valuable nowadays back then it was on another level Gold and silver are ONLY things that high ranking nobles merchants and royalty could use for jewelry this is also not counting the gemstones on them. Jinshis hairpin was likely pure silver BTW his second hairpin is gold with a well made red gemstone. While probably not pure gold it is probably of a high quality
AFAIK in China gold was less valuable than silver (since it's more abundant than silver is, geology wise), which is why they wanted the Bri'ish to pay for tea in silver only, none of the useless shit they wanted to trade or gold or nuffin
I'm extremely sensitive to people with food allergies, and fish especially, so seeing that little baby forcing herself to eat it even though she knows she couldn't, puts in me instant must protecc mode for her. Even if she's a brat. Still struggling to wrap my head around the machinations in this episode though. In the end they say, so the target was Lishu--but it was Gyokuyo's soup that was tampered with? I also don't get the significance of Maomao's jellyfish plate being in error. That dish was safe.
