Song written by Donald Fagen & Walter Becker, arrangement by Joe Roccisano. From the jazz album "Apogee" originally released on LP in 1978. Fagen & Becker produced this jazz album, which Fagen said was "basically for tenor freaks". Personnel: Pete Christlieb, Warne Marsh (tenor saxophone); Lou Levy (piano); Jim Hughart (bass); Nick Ceroli (drums).
Very nice jazz tune written by the great duo of Fagen & Becker. Both sax players are great!
I wore out two LP copies of this recording back in the day trying to absorb it all. In the 21st century there's still lessons to be learned listening to these contrasting tenor titans mix it up with absolute reverence for one another and the music.
This tune is based on a Burt Bacharach tune called "Land of Make Believe" (not to be confused with the samba Chuck Mangione gave the same name). I was delighted to hear that number on a digital music station sung by Dionne Warwick- bebop in reverse (I know the bop line very, very well, but couldn't sing Bacharach's melody on demand).
Donald and Walter deserve props for putting this together- a true jazz classic, indeed.
I love the way the two tenor players combine.
Wow! Great tune. I didn't know those Steely Dan guys wrote such a jazzy-sax number.
From never having hearsd of this album to ordering it and the Hoops McCann CD on amazon took approximately five seconds. Thanks for the superb recommendation.
2:18 ...definitely a top 5 warne marsh solo. 70's-80's warne is the best kept secret in jazz. Truly a singular approach to harmony.
One of my favorite all-time recordings...life changing for me. Nice to see my photo (the color one, from Pete's Wiki page, I assume) made it into this video too.
Pete at his height (stayed there, by the way)
