Mine has the original wooden grips although they started coming with rubber grips about a year or so after I got mine. They are reliable, easy to carry and look great too. The .38sp +P round has a little more power than many people might think. Nice shooting as always Hickok...........

@@robertkwiatkoski1292 Just my .02...I have one of these and the all-stainless 640. The 642 was too snappy in recoil for my wife, even with Federal "low recoil" defense loads. The 640 much better. In the end, she went with a S&W Shield Plus 9mm, which is more comfortable for her. These 642s are terrific little revolvers and very comfortable to carry. @@robertkwiatkoski1292 I have a 686+ with a 3 inch barrel, if she likes her 5 inch she may like the 3 inch a little better to carry but I don't find it to be very concealable. Too bad you can't find a range that rents out some of their firearms to use at their range. I used to own two 642's. Reliable and easy to carry. These days, I've opted for a model 640 .357. Works well in my DeSantis pocket holster or in my Blackhawk Speed Classic owb holster at 3 o' clock. I use Federal Barnes Expanders 140 grain hollow points, Hornady Critical Defense 125 hp's, and some .38 +p back ups.
I bought a 637 for carry a while back and carry it every day. Very comfortable and never even know it's there. Bout as simple and reliable as you can get.
I have plenty of more expensive semi auto pistols but day in day out I continue to carry my 642. It is reliable and easy to conceal. I can comfortably carry it in all seasons. The frame of a revolver with its curve just blends in a lot better and doesn’t print like a blocky semi auto does. If I’m more likely to carry I’m more likely to be prepared. I’d rather have a gun that holds 5 rounds on my belt than a 17 round gun sitting in a safe.
Fired both this and the hammered version for the first time a few months ago. Always loved revolvers and this has one of the best triggers on a stock one out there. Eventually I'll probably get the humpback model, but I'll gladly take any iteration as a summer carry gun
My first handgun was a S&W 640-1 in the 357. Got it used 18 years ago. Still have it and love it. I paid $280 for it! I worked late nights a lot and always felt safe with it. A wonderful little gun that packs a punch.
I have carried the Airweight for over 20+ years. Never a misfire, never any failures. It's bee a great go to dependable firearm. Nothing wrong with them and as you stated wearing one of them doesn't pull your pants down. You don't have to keep thinking about where it is and it's position. They work and work very well for what they are designed to do.
I have the 637 Smith and Wesson. I carried it on my ankle for many years as a backup. Yes, you do get attached to it. Still carry it as a pocket pistol when not carrying a Glock. Another good video.
I carry my 442 everyday in a leather shoulder holster with 3 speedloaders. It is so light and easy to carry I never leave it at home. If going into the big city, I carry one of my mag fed guns. Works for me. I feel confident that if someone attacks me as an old 62 year old white guy, it will get them off of me so I can exit the situation. My days of being Rambo are long gone. But you do have to practice with it at reasonable ranges. 80 yards is a bit to far unless you are Hickok!
Watching this gt a few minutes into it and had to run upstairs to grab my 642PC off the shelf. Everything he says about it is spot on. Great revolver for sure
I have a 642 Performance Center with no key lock. Trigger is as smooth as butter. My favorite carry. So versatile, so light, takes optional moon clips, just a great pocket gun.
I love watching his videos. We are about the same age it makes me feel good to see him shoot that well. I can shoot decent, but Hickok is in another league. 😊
Been using one as my Summer carry for a few years now and have nothing but good things to say about it. Shoots great, reliable, the concealibility under just a t shirt during the hot Southern Summer months is second to none. A modern classic.
Bought my exwife a model 640 for sweetest day 25-years ago. No lock.... She was good with .38's as the. 357 rounds were a little overwhelming. She's kinda petite. She impressed everyone at our concealed carry training! Even me! Man she got real quick with those speedloaders! Good times.... Thanks for reminding me.
I bought a S&W 442 Pro Series a couple years ago, and I love that little gun. I carry it more than I carry my G43X, and it's been a great purchase for me. I'd buy another one in a heartbeat.
Shot .38 special outta my buddy's 686 last week. First revolver I've shot in over a decade. Smooth double action trigger pull. It's got me wanting a wheel gun.
Great to hear a man confident enough in his marksmanship to reley on a five round wheel gun, And not feel undergunned. We hear from many so called defenders that only feel safe with 17 or 19 rounds, With 2 extra mags. Hey, I carry a 66-2 with 357 hollowpoints....
I've never had a 642, but I have a model 38, and a 649. If I carry a J frame I generally opt for the 649. It's a 357 mag with the shrouded hammer so it still offers single or double action. Being stainless it's a little heavier, but like anything else you get used to it, and it is comforting to know you've got the extra power. Taking it to the range shooting 38 spcl is very comfortable.
Nice to see someone demonstrate the true capabilities of a quality snobby. My 642 has shed the rubber grips for smooth faux ivory grips plus a Tyler T grip. I carry in an upside-down shoulder rig during cold weather and a thin leather IWB in warm weather. I love it!
Bought my 642 about 10 years ago. Airweight with a laser sight on it. It was my first pistol and first CCW. I keep hollow points in it at all times. Something to love about the nostalgia of revolvers… the consistency and ease of use. I also have a Smith and Wesson 9mm M&P, but I think my favorite is the 642.
Absolutely my favorite carry gun ever. Have a P365 but this is the one I always take with me. Presents from a pocket holster smoother and faster than the 365.
I have the 442, which is basically the same firearm, and carry it way more often than I thought I would. It's a heck of a convenient weapon to have around and I feel everyone should own one. Shooting one of these will help train you to shoot better and the lessons learned at the range with the j-frame will make you a better shot overall with all your handguns. When I bought mine, the option for no key lock did not cost extra.
I picked up a 642 without the keylock 5 or 6 years ago after watching his first 642 video. I recently picked up the 686 plus with the 2.5in both great shooters.
Absolutely. It’s always going do what it’s supposed to do, weighs next to nothing, it’s never going to get snagged on fabric, and you’ll always be able to fix it yourself
these little guys are surprisingly accurate. the triggers are really nice once you break them in. i used to have a 640 pro and believe it or not i had it malfunction and it was because some wear crud on the inside was binding up the action. never had that issue with the 642 though.
Once on a range in Charleston WV I was shooting bricks at 50 with my M&P 340 using 158gr lead 38 Specials. I was hitting bricks and splitting them and then shooting the left over pieces. A couple guys at the range were mighty impressed. I enjoyed that. I was hitting damn near every time too. Why? I know that gun inside and out. I’ve shot it a LOT and I carry it all the time. It is right beside me as I tap this comment! These little j-frames are my favorite. As Mr Hickock says the 38 has some guts to it when it connects. You know you have a round that can stop a threat. Yeah. I worry about only five shots. But I carry a speed strip and while not fast at least I have a reload.
I have one. No lock, nice front sight, zero sag in a pocket. This really is a top option for conceal carry. Easy to unload, no slide racking. I carry standard pressure 158 grain hollowpoints in .38.

Hello I’m interested in buying one myself… never had a revolver. Do I have to worry about lining up the cylinder with the barrel when I close the cylinder after loading?
I have the 642 performance center with the hammer. The ergonomics and trigger are unmatched. The most enjoyable gun to shoot by far. My wife’s favorite also. That speaks volumes to its controllability
I have a model 442, which is, I believe, the same as a 642 except for a dark finish instead of the stainless. I bought it new last year for $400 and it does not have the key hole lock. Nice guns.
I just picked up the Pro series. The cylinder is cut for moon clips. It came with 3 clips. Federal Punch +p works real well with moon clips. Also, comes with a performance center trigger but not a performance trigger job. I got the hard blue case with mine. Quickly becoming my favorite firearm. It's as easy as grab and go.
Yup. 642 is my primary EDC. Love the trigger, once you learn the feel I can stage the trigger and shoot like it's a single action. Thanks for showing one of yours and my best friend.
I bought the 642 as my first carry pistol 20 years ago. It is a dependable snag proof fire arm that has worked every time. If you have a misfire just pull the trigger again…. No re-racking. I carry one reloader. This is a close combat weapon so 5 shots is adequate and FBI statistics back that up (3 shots less than 15 feet). The +p ammo packs a punch and will go through winter clothing. Love this gun !
Happy Anniversary Mr. Hickok, I have a couple S&W revolver but my 2008 442 DC v Heller commemorative is my favorite. I love the Justice ⚖ and Right to Keep And Bear Arms on the side plate. Great guns and great video
Had one several years ago. Liked it a lot. So light I had to keep checking it was there. Had to sell it during a time of financial stress. It’s still high on my list of “shouldn’t have sold thats “.
My everyday conceal carries are Smith& Wesson M&P Bodygaurd 38 Spl + P. Bond Arms Snake Slayer 45 Long Colt/3 Inch 410. I love both weapons, it's always fun carrying a hand held double barrel shotgun with a 3-in barrel. Jus Sayin. Great Pocket conceal carries
A long time ago I acquired a 642-2 NRA Power port model +P. Installed laser grips on it as well. Great compact pistol that shoots 125 grn HP rounds accurately. Great back up for a jacket pocket carry up here in South Dakota. Great retirement state compared to California where I grew up.
This was the very first handgun I shot. Got my CCDW license using this revolver shooting the required amount. This was back in 2007 and I still have it and will never get rid of it. Still carry it in the summer when wearing short pants. Love that little gun. My gun does have the Hillary hole.
I just bought a 642 Pro without the hole, and yes, it's very neat. It's the only gun I don't want to put out of my hand, its like a fidget spinner.. I also like to load the first 5 shoots with moon clips, less rattling.
I'm glad you love this gun. I was able to buy a second hand S&W Model 637 from my boss and I really like it. I'm not a great shot so I appreciate the exposed hammer for an easier first shot. It does have a side lock but I never have a problem with it.
Congrats on you 642 anniversary. I have mine normally as a backup on the ankle to my duty weapon, Glock19. Not a big fan of pants pocket carry but love it in a sturdy jacket.
Many years ago, a guy at the gun club let me use his sp101 / 3" bbl for center fire qualification. I loved it and it's on my want list. Hasn't come to the top of the list yet...
Nice snubby Hickok!! I bought a 5 shot snub nose 38 Taurus back in the mid 90s and I've never turned loose of it, it's a nice little shooter and sometimes I load it with bird shot rounds and take it fishing with me when I go to certain places I know there could be water moccasins slithering around!!
Thank you for the review. I often carry the 640 Pro Series stainless .357 in a Kramer crossdraw. This is a nice rig when driving. l also have a M&P 340 that easily carries in a back pocket in my Kramer pocket holster, or in a jacket pocket.
Carried my for so long (25 ish yrs) that my gray finish is completely gone. Jason at S&W told me to just spray paint it for replacing the finish. What a jack ass.
Beautiful revolver! I just bought a 340PD to use in my carry rotation because of how ridiculously light it is; which is handy for when I'm wearing something like sweats. It would be great to see a video on the 340PD just to see what your impressions of it are. 👍
The best way I can describe it is the gun is more accurate that you’ll ever be. It’s just that short barrel pistols are harder for people to shoot accurately, because we have a hard time precisely lining up the sights.
Nice Your New York Reload reminds of Michael Douglas in the Movie Black Rain he is a New York Cop and in the first part of the movie he uses two revolvers when he goes after the bad guys. I have a few different S&W revolvers over the years always enjoyed them, my favorite was my Model 19, 4 inch blue steel.

Just got my 642 a few months ago, it's one of my favorite pieces now. Great EDC 👍🏻
Happy Anniversary Mr. Hickok, I have a couple S&W revolver but my 2008 442 DC v Heller commemorative is my favorite. I love the Justice ⚖ and Right to Keep And Bear Arms on the side plate. Great guns and great video
Beautiful little blaster, love it
My first firearm was a 642, have had it only 6 years. Great summer gun.
I love the term summer gun that I keep seeing here. Shows how we have different guns for every occasion.
I carry my 642 performance series EDC. So comfortable in hand and lots of stopping power, best of all never worry about a jam/missfire
One of my fav pieces to carry. Good vid as always.
I have that revolver in black.Great little gun!
Congratulations on having a 38 special for 25 years thanks for sharing Hickok45
Had one several years ago. Liked it a lot. So light I had to keep checking it was there. Had to sell it during a time of financial stress. It’s still high on my list of “shouldn’t have sold thats “.
Carried that pistol as a back up for alot of years as a deputy. It is a great revolver.
I've had mine for about 15 years and replaced the rubber grips with old school wood grips. I like wheel guns.
Best part of this video... Hickok45 in short sleeves! Come on spring!
Great retirement state compared to California where I grew up.
man.... Canada really got screwed on handguns... Another great video!
Retired Mobile Al cop and have had one since late 90’s and l love 🎉it and carry it often as you do
Bought a 642 Light Weight for my wife 15 yrs ago she loves it.
Happy Gun-aversary! Very cool revolver 👍
Now you got me thinking of getting a second 642
As a Native New Yorker that lives in Las Vegas now this is my every day carry! This gun kicks like a mule and goes boom every time!
Excellent option for people including carrying two of them. Even both of them would be extremely light and easy to carry.
This was the very first handgun I shot. Got my CCDW license using this revolver shooting the required amount. This was back in 2007 and I still have it and will never get rid of it. Still carry it in the summer when wearing short pants. Love that little gun. My gun does have the Hillary hole.
A "get off me gun" is exactly right brother! Nice piece 👌🏻
I have the hammered version and is my favorite carry sidearm. Nice little friend.
I have the 637 air weight and I work midnights downtown Chicago and this is my backup gun I have carried since we got ccl in 2014
I just bought a 642 Pro without the hole, and yes, it's very neat.
Great video! Thanks. I’m a LCR man but J is nice too.
I got an sp101 with a bobed hammer. Its a really nice little pocket tank.
Many years ago, a guy at the gun club let me use his sp101 / 3" bbl for center fire qualification. I loved it and it's on my want list. Hasn't come to the top of the list yet...
Nice snubby Hickok!! I bought a 5
shot snub nose 38 Taurus back in
the mid 90s and I've never turned
loose of it, it's a nice little shooter
and sometimes I load it with bird
shot rounds and take it fishing
with me when I go to certain places
I know there could be water moccasins slithering around!!
Twenty-five years! That’s excellent. Congratulations!
Now I want one.
top gunner bigcock45 S&W anniversary, life is good!
Thank you for the review. I often carry the 640 Pro Series stainless .357 in a Kramer crossdraw. This is a nice rig when driving. l also have a M&P 340 that easily carries in a back pocket in my Kramer pocket holster, or in a jacket pocket.
Still have the Taurus PT92 dad bought me in 1997. Great gun I carry in my rotation.
The Gen Z wheelgun. The pocket jewel is pleasing to the eye lmao.
442 with a crimson trace laser boot grip and stoked with underwood ammo every day here in KCMO'S North End.
Revolvers hold a special spot for me. I enjoyed hearing you speak at the Dixie Deer Classic.
Carried my for so long (25 ish yrs) that my gray finish is completely gone.
Jason at S&W told me to just spray paint it for replacing the finish. What a jack ass.
I have one with hammer, 637 airweight, great pocket gun but kicks harder than you think with hot 38spl, but pretty accurate.
Beautiful revolver! I just bought a 340PD to use in my carry rotation because of how ridiculously light it is; which is handy for when I'm wearing something like sweats. It would be great to see a video on the 340PD just to see what your impressions of it are. 👍
I have the 442, "no lock" never leave home without it!!
The best way I can describe it is the gun is more accurate that you’ll ever be. It’s just that short barrel pistols are harder for people to shoot accurately, because we have a hard time precisely lining up the sights.
Now I have to go get another one! I love the one I have!
Nice
Your New York Reload reminds of Michael Douglas in the Movie Black Rain he is a New York Cop and in the first part of the movie he uses two revolvers when he goes after the bad guys.
I have a few different S&W revolvers over the years always enjoyed them, my favorite was my Model 19, 4 inch blue steel.
