If this video resonates with you, then after watching the video, tell me this in the Comments section:
    1. Are you already on Upwork? If so, would you say you're Beginner, Intermediate or Advanced level?
    2. Is there specific content you would want to see me focus on? Is there a SPECIFIC QUESTION you want answered right now?
    3. Do you WANT me to do a weekly livestream? Would you show up, so we can help you answer some of the questions you have that will help you get further faster in your freelance journey?

      1. Advanced in Upwork, all my career experience has been related to Upwork, I have never touched an office in my life 😂
      2. You should continue talking about Upwork, I feel it is the best and has great opportunities for most of the areas (not only engineer like me).
      3. Yeah, maybe you can start Livestream, maybe after getting a few more subscribers or viewers? It could be a great dynamic, would help people to get their questions answered.
I do really encourage you to continue with this channel, I know there are many people who are trying to succeed in this world because their are tired of their traditional works and routines, or they don't simply find jobs that adapta to their need.
I'm from Venezuela (a country in deep economical crisis), and I have encouraged some of my friends to join into Upwork, and some of they did! I'm very happy to say that 5 of them are succeeding in the platform at this moment. So yes! There are public for this and I hope that you can help many people!
Best of luck and success with your ongoing channel!

I had to pause this video and THANK YOU for providing such genuine thoughts and advice on your channel. I found your channel 2 weeks ago, and it took me a week to get a job offer finally.. I followed through your advice and I could clearly see the difference between the cover letters I sent before and the ones I write now.. Just wanted to thank you for being a great person! Your story resonates a lot with me; right now I'm standing at this point in life where upwork could be a lifesaver for me, and I care so much about making my upwork journey work too, quite dedicated to this.. Literally pulled out a notepad and I'm taking notes after your videos.. Thanks Evan, you're the best.. keep going!

@Design A2 Tuto Gratis thank you so much for commenting - be sure to check out the other videos on the channel, we have a couple of videos on Proposals and Revamping your Upwork Profile - though we have more coming out, so if you didn't subscribe yet and you want to make sure you receive the videos, you know what to do :D hit subscribe and the bell for notifications - it is free, after all 🙂 and who knows, you might just find "that one little gold nugget" that helps you win your next job, or your next 10 jobs.... or your next 100 jobs? Who knows! I will do my best for you!
I'm also looking forward to the livestream, and actually kind of nervous! This morning during a client call both my son AND daughter bust into the office to say hello (to everyone on the call, not me LOL!), so we'll just have to see how it goes but I'll try to do my best.
I actually have a question for you, since it's the first time seeing you comment on the videos... once you see the rest of the videos, can you answer this question:
What do you prefer the most out of this content?
      Information / Education about Upwork
Personality & My Personal Experiences with Upwork
      Entertainment

Evan! This video definitely resonated with me. I am a complete newbie, not just to Upwork, but to freelancing in general. I am working toward a life change from the 9-5 grind I have worked my whole life. Thank you UA-cam for putting one of your videos in my feed. Today I am binging on all of your videos from beginning to end. I would like to see more content on how to find real clients because I seem to be wasting connects on scammers. How do I become more competitive? I would definitely attend a live stream, even if it's to just to listen to the conversation and see what other people are doing. I feel like I am making nothing but mistakes.

    • @FreelanceMVP
      @FreelanceMVP  2 роки тому

@Renee thanks so much for this comment, I'm so glad you joined us. To be more competitive, I would suggest that it's a natural progression. You start not really knowing what you're going to do, but if you listen *very closely* to what clients are saying they want, and matching those things with what you can do, then you're going to start to see patterns and niches where you can fit in. From there, it's just focusing your attention down into a very small niche (like gradually focusing a magnifying glass) and you'll start to really accelerate.
Does that help you at all?

I don't typically leave comments on videos, but I'm struck by your genuineness and sincerity. I'd love to support your channel and yes, I'm a top-rated plus freelancer on Upwork! I'm a professional VO artist and editor/writer.
I watch channels on freelancing for motivation (especially since we're working remotely), so seeing your workflow, getting to know your daily routine, learning important soft skills, e.g. client management and hearing your stories would be interesting! As for livestreams, I usually watch the videos after, and not LIVE.

@Hui Mei thank you so much for commenting, it really means a lot to me! I checked out a couple of the videos on your channel, and I have to compliment you that you look so natural on camera! I really struggle to come up with short videos that will hopefully be funny, engaging content that also helps show some of the things you mentioned, like workflow, routine, the skills & principles... I hope that you will find it helpful! Incidentally, we're just putting final touches on a "get-clients-workflow" video that should come out in the next couple of days. It'll be short and maybe a little "hypey" but hopefully useful! 🙂
Also, thanks for sharing your input about livestreams - funny enough, I find that in a lot of cases, I am actually the same! (meaning, I watch but not necessarily LIVE). Out of interest, how did you find out about the channel originally?

Man thank you so much for this extra video! You can count on me for this!
I'll try to answer your questions right here
-A cool thing you can do is try inviting top freelancers for each major area (such as graphic design, engineering, marketing, , architecture) and make them talk about the strategies that work with their (major) niche.
-Right now I consider I'm in the intermediate-to-advanced area of Upwork, with a "top-rated plus" badge. I have the same time you have in the platform and started working here for similar reasons, so it's so awesome to know how freelancing is changing lives of people out there. I just want my work here to be more stable and turn it into a business in case Upwork suddenly disappears.
-A big question I have (and I am struggling with) is that before 2021 I had many invitations come by for new jobs, and now seems like the algorithm is not showing me anymore to clients. So if that's a thing maybe there should be a way to return to that list of suggestions to clients, or prevent people from falling into that.
-I don't usually watch livestreams, but yours would be actually one I would make time for. Mostly I would do it to be able to see other freelancers talk and express ideas and questions. That's because for the same nature of "marketplace" upwork has, there's not much space for making community, which your channel could be a great catalyst for.
Other than that, It's great to see people that just genuinely want to make life better for everyone. I'm so excited to be one of the first people in your community!

A year later, I am just viewing this. I received an invite for an upcoming event on Upwork and that's how I learned about you. Upwork - I'm about 6 weeks in and see the absolute potential for success here. I'm a beginner on Upwork and somewhere between a intermediate and advanced on marketing and writing. This video was so incredibly honest and articulate - straight from the heart. So I guess what I would want to see is more of that - the reality of the platform and freelancing. My biggest takeaway from this was that it was something you had to do with your circumstances - that you had to endure all the challenges that were presented to you. It tells me that in order to be successful, we should stick with it. I am looking forward to catching up on your content and your upcoming event for Upwork this month. Hi Evan! To answer your 3 questions:
    1. Yes, I'm on Upwork since yesterday. So I fall in the category of beginner. I have sent out a couple of proposals but nothing is accepted yet.
    2. The content I would like you to focus on first is how to find a job.
A question I would like to have answered is whether you can go for well paying jobs straight away or not (maybe you first need to establish a 'presence' on the platform first by taking on low paying jobs, even though I personally already have sufficient experience outside of the platform to be able to take the higher paying jobs)?
Example video: 'how to get your first job on upwork'.
Subsequent interesting video would be: 'how to get a high-paying job on upwork'.
    3. I don't have experience with participating in live streams and don't see the value right now.
I like being able to watch videos in my own time on subjects that I can choose.

Hi Evan, I think this is my first comment in a UA-cam video. Thank you for sharing your history with such openness and vulnerability. I relate a lot to your history.
    1. I consider myself a beginner. I started at Upwork two months ago, in this period I was able to get 12 projects, some were small contracts and some are recurrent (5 - 15 weekly hours).
    2. My focus now is getting more projects. As soon as I feel I'm working a lot (40~60 weekly hours) I'll switch my focus to increasing my hourly rate.
    3. I'm not a big fan of livestreams however, If you launched some kind of mastermind like few students with high interaction, I would seriously consider joining!
Thank you again! Wishing the best for you and your family!

Ive found really nice to work with clients before, I just need 3 or 4 times more of them.

    1. Yes, I am on Upwork and I feel like I am intermediate. While I have been on Upwork for a long time, I have never broken out of this phase. Scaling to an advanced level is my ultimate goal. I want to get more serious about making Upwork a more reliable tool in my belt.
    2. The content I am looking for is is a guide/walk through that I can follow along with. I have had a decent amount of success to have faith in the Upwork success process. I believe If I just follow in your footsteps, I'll be able to grow on this platform.

Hi Evan, I recently came across your channel and I'm really excited that it exists. I decided to enter the freelancing space quite recently (about a month ago) and I am a complete beginner who is still familiarizing himself on this platform (Upwork).
1.) Yes, I'm already on Upwork at beginner level.
2.) I've seen you've done videos on profile, proposals etc. which are my main concern right now. Perhaps what I would like to know is how to handle disputes should they occur. The thought that you can encounter a dispute sounds terrifying for a beginner.
3.) In my opinion, I think doing a scripted video (though it's intensive) is a better approach than livestream. I imagine you've had to answer the same questions over and over again over a number of livestreams. I think preparing a scripted video answering a specific question/issue is better, even if they come out once a month or two.
Thank you for being authentic and genuinely wanting to help others in this journey. Good job man 👊🏾

@Anony Mouse Congratulations on your success at getting to Advanced level! Thanks so much for your comments - can I just say right now, that I love your questions? They're really thought-provoking!
Warning: This might be TOTALLY DIFFERENT vs. what you actually asked 🤣🤣🤣
For this one, I WILL have to do a video on "How to Say No Effectively." Bottom line, there is no easy way to let clients down, but there are a few strategies:
-Step 1: Always be as nice, polite and professional as you can be.
      -Step 2: Be clear
-Step 3... Honestly, I'm probably going to get a lot of flame for this part... If they don't get the picture, they're not a great fit. LET ME EXPLAIN THOUGH!
We are freelancers. We don't just work with people because they have money and we need work. When you're really good at what you do, you CHOOSE who you want to work WITH, not who you're working FOR. This is going to get me a lot of flame too, but everyone who knows me knows that I have strong opinions, loosely held.
And one of those opinions is this: If a client has any hint of an attitude that resembles the sort of person who would say, "But I'm paying you X to do this... YOU WORK FOR ME" then that is an instant "it's not a great fit, I think you might be better served with another person" response.
Life is FAR TOO SHORT for headaches - both on my clients' side, as well as on mine. My Rule #1, so strong and so important that I had it tattooed on my arm, is simple: NO DRAMA. It has served me well.
When you can talk openly with someone, and just be direct while remaining focused on the desired result, without emotions getting in the way or hurt feelings - then that's wonderful. Because your client gets an awesome result, and you get to help them get there.
But you're CHOOSING to work together. It is a marriage of EQUALS - not a one-sided equation.
One thing that I do different, was inspired by the menu of one of my favorite cocktail speakeasies. Their menu is an actual 150-page BOOK of custom cocktails. Extremely complicated stuff. They are EXTRAORDINARY at their craft, and it shows. A WONDERFUL experience.
And before you get to look at the cocktails, on Page 2 of this menu is a full-page set of standards entitled HOUSE RULES. Some examples:
#1: Rudeness is prohibited. Don't act like an amateur.
#4: No crying and no yawning at the bar. We are neither your mother nor your bed.
#7: Perfection takes time. Please be patient.
#11: We are in the business of exceeding your expectations. If we don't, please call us out on it.
#12: The guest is always right, except when they are wrong.
It sets the tone for your entire experience. Expect excellence, but don't expect it immediately, and behave appropriately.
I have created my own set of House Rules for our company, which every client I work with is required to review and accept the terms of, before working together. It is included in every proposal I send.
I rarely have problems with clients acting unprofessionally now. The tone and expectations are set up-front, extremely clearly, and everyone is on the same page. So that means that once I'm working with somebody, the odds are good that they will behave appropriately and we will not have an issue on that front.
Bottom line: Someone is in control of your process - either you, or your client. I'd rather it be you.

I just found your channel and I've watched 3-4 videos here and read comments and I'm feeling really motivated rn like I can also do it. I'm a beginner on upwork. I got a small project (10$) 2 days ago. I was really happy that after using so many connects I got a project finally. Still I'm a beginner..I don't know how to write proposals, how to improve my profile there and if there's something wrong with my portfolio.
I'm going to watch every single video of yours and apply these tips on my account and then I'll come back again to drop a comment for people like me so they get motivated and start their journey.
I don't know much about upwork, just few things about how it works. But I don't know how to become successful there.
Also I'd love to see videos on how to improve upwork profile. What we should mention and what we shouldn't. How to deal with competition. Should we invest connects on that 'availablity' batch or save those connects for new jobs bcuz we've just started.
Also I'd like to watch your live streams and I'd ask tons of questions and things I'm confused about.
Thankyou for sharing your journey with us. It gave me that motivation I really needed rn. I was super stressed about my career. I'm 25 and no job. I want to become a freelancer and work freely.
This video gave me enough motivation to get it started. Thanks again✨

Hello Evan, thanks for making this channel. I know you made this video 9 months ago, but just came across your story and your story of being at a tough situation REALLY resonated with me as I am going through a SIMILAR situation.
I do not know if you are going to read this, but do want to answer the questions, as I CARE about making this work for my fam.
    1. Yes , I have my upwork profile as a beginner and I am working on my portfolio.
    2. My question is how can a Jack of all Trades narrow down the skill set and a niche. For instance I am a Mining Engineer, but I have worked in Mining, Construction and now in Trading.
So over the past 16 years, I have spent half in Mining and half in Construction and I am now in Trading for the past year. Narrowing down my skill set based on the market demand ( most likely Project Management in Construction) seems like the best option. What do you think?
    3. Yes ,I would show up to the livestream. With questions regarding profile creation and optimization.

@Teacher Waseem Height thank you so much! Haha I was a little apprehensive to put such a poor quality video out there on UA-cam but I really appreciate that you enjoyed it. Thanks so much for giving me more background on your Upwork journey. It seems like there is a pretty big drop off rate of people who get started on Upwork but then get a bit frustrated with how things can go slow sometimes, and leave the platform for a while. On the graphic design side, I’d say there is a definite “design tier” effect whereby there are lots of clients at the low end, and fewer clients at the high end. And to win at the high end, it does require a really specific approach, doing things very differently and bringing a lot more of the “strategy knowledge” to the table. It’s a really interesting space though, and a lot of fun when you’re winning at it 😍 I actually taught my sister (she’s a graphic designer) a few of the principles and she did extremely well on a nice 2-year stint on Upwork before one of her clients hired her to manage the graphic design for Ford - pretty cool! Maybe I’ll go into some of that on my next course, how that story played out and the trajectory - what do you think?

@@FreelanceMVP I really appreciate that you took so much time to write to my reply. Listening to your audeince and delivering what you think will help is a great idea.
I'm teaching human relations to my students using the book by Dale Carnegie "How to Win Friends and Influence People", and I have to say, some of the things you say are almost right out of the book.
      - The client only cares about themselves
      - Smile
      - Have a genuine appreciation for others
      - Don't force your client, but find out what they need and use that to your advantage to get what you need.
Since watching your videos, I updated my profile, uploaded some portfolio projects, took a better profile picture, updated the headline.
I need to update my profile now.

    • @FreelanceMVP
      @FreelanceMVP  3 роки тому +1

@Teacher Waseem Height Of course I'm going to take time to write back to you. You took the time out of YOUR busy day to write to me and contribute to our channel and our community, so naturally I must reciprocate and help wherever I can! It's people who CARE, that are the ones who succeed!
"How to Win Friends & Influence People" - such a classic. I've read it a few times (and vividly remember listening to the audiobook over and over), and always felt like I was actually the WORST at putting that stuff into practice. I wish I could emulate it more, but we all have our shortcomings, right? :-)
What you picked up on is so true though. Understanding the self-interest of the client is important - most people are not narcissistic "crazy people" that are solely self-interested, but iI've found that almost obsessively putting yourself in others' shoes and relentlessly seeing things from their perspective, is an EXTREMELY effective strategy that allows you to tap into that person's motivations, and then assess whether what you offer is going to satisfy both the needs they can put into words, and the deeper desires that maybe they can't fully elucidate or verbalize. Simple example: "I want a website." Basic, pretty clear need, right? But really, the desire might be, "I want my website to show that I'm not just a small business, but that this is a professional operation, and we play at the same level as our biggest competitors." or, "I want to show it to my family, say 'Look what I've done, look what I've accomplished' and be respected for where I've gotten to" or "I want this website to make my business money in an automated way, so that I can spend less time on sales calls and more time with my family." Many different motivations there, beyond the simple "I want a website." Relentlessly looking deeper is a very valuable skill in that equation - because then maybe you're the person who not only understands them, but if you can also DELIVER on that vision for the RIGHT client, then you're probably VERY SPECIAL in their eyes - and the eyes of many others.
It's never something that you want to be too Machiavellian about. We're not manipulating people here- because you actually don't have to do that in order to be successful. But if you see that what you can execute matches with a very common need or deep desire, within a specific segment of clients that have the ability to pay a lot of money and are tons of fun to work with, well then you have yourself a BUSINESS my friend. And as long as:
1, You always do what you say you'll do,
      2. You choose very carefully the things that you agree you'll do, and
      3. When you do something, you deliver excellence,
Then Upwork is literally your best resource in the WORLD for free leads and growing your business.
To round it all off, all of this above (and this entire channel) is meaningless unless the people watching take action, so I am SO GLAD to see that you are already making positive changes and trying new things as a result. It makes me feel very humbled to know that someplace, some time, the things that I'm striving to do, are having an impact. (hopefully a positive impact LOL)

    2. Please continue your Upwork videos. I usually have lots of ongoing questions but I feel they are dynamic and need backstory in order for you to give a sufficient answer.
    3. Yes, I like the idea of a livestream. But I reckon it would be, like you said, in one of your comments on another video. chaotic. How about, you make a special series of videos, in which you answer complex scenario-based questions. We would send in our brief backstory and the questions, and basically present a scenario to you, and then you could answer a select number of such questions and present them in each video. For e.g. Video: Upwork Users' Case Scenario Series -1. 20 minutes long, 4 cases selected, 5 mins each. You could combine very similar type of cases within one segment.

Thanks for sharing ITech, welcome to the platform! 👏 Yes, Upwork now requires you to buy connects once you run out. It’s a mechanism that I believe they designed to ensure that people are submitting high-quality job proposals. But does it work as intended? I will cover that part in a video soon!!

    Hi, Evan!
First, let me address your questions right away, here are my answers (I hope it's not too late):
    1. Yes, I'm on Upwork. I can say I'm in the intermediate group.
    2. Specific questions that I am curious about are mostly about how to make freelancing efficient and stable, like how I don't have to make a dozen of proposals before landing one job, and how I should standardize the work process and not waste time revising, improving and perfecting the profile, proposal, and portfolio every time I apply for a new job.
Basically, the part that many freelancers don't often get to know: what clients care about that we assume is important and what they don't care about that we spend too much time doing.
    3. No. I think live streams wouldn't be efficient: you'll probably get too many questions to answer (as the channel grows), you'll probably get repeated questions you already answered in previous streams, and I doubt that someone will watch a very long video (>1 hour) to get information that they possibly already know. I really don't mean to pull you back if you're into that, but short videos with specific focuses are much more effective in my opinion (and will live longer, giving you more views in the long run) 😄.
Now, if you have time, I want to say a few things:
Just watching through your video, I felt your honesty and love, which I really admire and am grateful for. Even though Upwork to me is a side hustle, I found your videos so valuable that I'm literally taking notes as I'm watching (through all of the channel's videos). This is the first time that I find someone who is actually talking about what ACTUALLY happens in the clients' minds, and gives advice that I haven't heard anywhere else (including Upwork's Tutorials). So, I just wanted to thank you and show my gratitude to someone who's devoting their valuable time to helping out others with valuable advice from real expertise.
Thank you, Evan! And good luck.
Sorry for the absurdly long comment :)
Oh. And of course, greetings to Nate 😊.

@Mohamed Soliman thank you so much, you're a REAL one!
To your question #2 - yes, it's true. Efficiency is the key that unlocks serious growth on Upwork. FACT. I'm building an entire course around it starting soon.
      3. Yes, that's something that's becoming true, I've now discovered that videos are much more efficient in helping a much broader audience.
Thank you SO SO much for your kind words, I really try to put as much value as I can into the advice I give so that it's as useful as possible to as many people out there as possible.
PLEASE do write long, thoughtful comments - that's how I can spot who the REAL ones are ❤️

I feel the sincerity. Your willingness to help gives me hope coz I'm about to quit freelancing. I haven't landed a job thru job sites yet and I am losing hope.
    1. I consider myself Beginner in freelancing. I have 8 long years working in a corporate job.
    2. Getting the first client is the hardest part of freelancing. Please, share your experience and tips. (I feel like I have done the guides you gave in your channel but...I don't know I'm just demotivated and don't know where to go) Should enrolling in online courses be helpful?
Should I go from Bookkeeping VA to admin support VA or other tasks if I'm not getting results?
    3. I'm hoping you could also invite top freelancers from other fields like accounting and bookkeeping.
Also, if I may, can you also promote/talk about giving a chance to a zero-experience/beginner. Some hiring managers might be watching too, right?

    Hello Evan,
Upwork helped me financially a lot. But, a few years ago, I had to go through a brain surgery and I had to stop working as my vision got affected. It took me 2 years to recover.
But, now when I started working on it again, my profile stats are in very bad condition. I finished 80+ jobs with 5 star ratings. I was Top Rated freelancer for years.
So, please make a video on how to fix a profile like that.. Any guidance would be helpful.

@@FreelanceMVP i suppose im interested in whether you should really risk it with fixed price contracts, since clients can hit you with chargebacks, it kinda pushes me towards sticking with hourly paid since you get the time tracker protection.
      Whats your thoughts on this?

    • @FreelanceMVP
      @FreelanceMVP  3 роки тому +1

@@paultopham81 super question mate. I’ve got some strong opinions, loosely held! Upwork Hourly is fantastic until you’ve “maxed out” your rate and really packaged up a particular service offering. Then that’s when you get as efficient as humanly possible, and keep raising prices as normal, but guess what, now it takes you half or a quarter or less of the time as it did before because you’re an absolute legend at what you do, and have really nailed the process. So your effective hourly rate then continues to scale. But fixed price is mostly a risk early on not because of the escrow piece (you just REALLY need to know the Upwork Terms of Service to know how to get paid 100% of the time and have job scope sizes that would merit a $297 screw-it-let’s-arbitrate fee which in high end WP dev, you’re probably solid). But fixed price is more of a risk when you don’t have an absolutely solid handle on exactly how long it’ll take you to perform a given service package, thus why I’d say this: once you start REALLY getting pushback on hourly rate in spite of clients knowing full well you’re worth it, that’s when it’s time to think about how you can productize your work, go fixed price, and scale from there. At least that’s what I did and it worked like a charm.
Does that answer what you’re thinking about?

@@paultopham81 Yeah brother just nail your “ideal project scope” where it’s big enough that it’s interesting for you to take on, but small enough to get a pile of clients, and you’ll start really crushing it on a fixed price basis. And once you start getting mega efficient then you’re basically minted. A friend of mine (Brummie but one of the good ones) started same way. Now he does 6-page WP websites, $25k minimum. But here’s the nice part: when you can throw together an excellent site with pit crew timing using elementor, that’s a tidy win every single time, I’m sure you can imagine.

Thanks for the suggestion on the video - it's actually one that I think I might do pretty soon, because making sure you're applying to the right jobs for you is really important. I think that's probably a super-overlooked area, and it holds people back (I know that at least for me, I wasted SO MUCH TIME early on with applying to jobs that were just a terrible fit for me from the start!). What do you think if I covered something like this: Find job listing, review description, quick red flags, really positive indicators it'll be a good job that influence my decision to apply, then how I write the proposal?
