- The full progression of the MASSIVE storm surge at Ft Myers Beach from SurgeCam 9 during Hurricane Ian. This cam was placed 8+ feet above the street surface.
The legend, cam 9
Not cam 5?😂
Dont forget bout sanibel island cams
REST in heavenly peace.
Well done, you guys came up with a great solution for how to show a hurricane without putting lives at risk. The Weather Channel should give you a ton of money for using your footage all day today.
Facts !!!!!
Hey, Jim Cantore has earned the right to risk his live for weather journalism!
@@tapperdurtle Never heard of her.
@@R.P.E 🤡🤡🤡
Hurricanes suck
RIP camera #9...
Your broadcasting life may have ended entirely too early.... however you are now a legacy in the eyes of the world of hurricane reporting & video documentation!
We will never forget you....
You are now more famous than Jim Cantore!!
LOL. This is a go pro cam. There is no possible way once the water hit the camera that it continued to record. 😂
@@colleb95 Uh, my gopro works underwater.
Must say, you guys got the best footage of Ian's wrath hands down right here.. I saw this camera live on the Weather Channel as it was happening (was watching from here in Clearwater. Us in Pinellas County really got spared this time around thank goodness). Watched the water come in until the camera was totally submerged.
Feel awful for the people of Ft Myers/Ft Myers Beach, Sanibel Island, Punta Gorda, and every other area that bore the brunt of this monster Hurricane.
Once again, thank you for documenting this travesty so well. This footage should win some sort of award..
This is by far the most epic footage and camera to catch it on the Internet. 🤙
110% agree!
Superb! Every TV station in hurricane prone coastal communities needs to have this on file to support future warnings to the public!
That was some of the best footage I've ever seen of a storm surge. Very, very impressive and terrifying enough to make sure people don't try to ride out a major hurricane headed their way.
I watched camera #9 all day until it went under water. Great coverage of the hurricane! I’m praying for all the people in Florida. Utube should give this footage an award.
Dawg why’d u spell UA-cam like that
All the people near the beach are rich and have insurance. They ll be fine.
@@pixelchic9449 You're misinformed. I'm 15 minutes away from FMB and Sanibel. I lost nothing but I'm not rich nor have the insurance you think I have. The people who lived in Linda Loma who are even closer had people in their attics. They weren't rich.
idk what fool made you think that because you live near a beach you're rich.
@@zzzarkka ??? I said I felt bad for those who were inside and not close to the beach. Misinformed your ass. I lived there. I know the truth 🙄 and racism everywhere. No thanks.
@@pixelchic9449 absolutely incorrect. It is better that people think yiu are a fool than open your mouth and relive all doubt
I was watching this live earlier. Absolutely insane.
I was down there with my family just two weeks before Ian. Stayed in a beautiful Air BnB on the beach, just a short walk to Times Square. After the storm, the area was unrecognizable. The aerial footage literally looked like a war zone. The house we were in was gone. Most of Times Square was gone. Almost unbelievable -- and heartbreaking.
Incredible footage of how dangerous a storm surge can be. Kudos to your team for the footage and camera building skill! Fly high, Surgie 9!!
That's what you call hanging in there!!! Taking one for the team!! Long live camera 9!! I was there during the live thank you guys for showing all this I was worried about my friends and family in Florida I have finally heard back from all of them they're all okay. My prayers and thoughts are for the ones all that didn't make it out are all that lost everything sending my love.
Thank you for your service #9. You are in our hearts and minds
It’s awful! I’m from Lee County and evacuated. I’ve lived here 40 years and there has never been a storm like this! Great coverage.
Dude you guys gotta change the title of this ASAP to include the name of the hurricane and any other tags. This video could easily go viral with the right keywords. Also you should clip it to show a Timelapse version and post on UA-cam “Shorts” as well as TikTok. Make your moment count, you could grow a ton! ❤
I was glued to this live yesterday for hours......
This is so sad. I was here last month and it was beautiful and everyone was so awesome. My whole heart goes out to this amazing community!
I feel sad for all those who have to go through this down in Fort Myers, they lost everything they worked hard for and some people even died too, all my prayers go out to those who died. :(
Best thing to do if you have to swim through surge is hold on to a tree. Look it wasn’t that bad. I mean it was rough but not on the level of Dorian in the Bahamas.
Even watching this on laptop is a scary experience.
@@markpalavosvrahotes5575 Best thing to do is what you think is the right thing to do since you're actually going through it.
From what I heard living down here is that people either died swimming to higher ground or they found a mattress or something floatable to get to higher ground.
Holding onto a tree and just sitting there makes you a sitting duck.
@@zzzarkka That can work as well. I personally believe the surge on Mexico Beach was worse because it came in more like a wall of water while Ian’s surge came in gradually.
The reality and reliability of what this camera showed, outstanding and educational. Always will remember CAMERA 9, a heroic job done
Stunning Hurricane Ian videos -- thanks!!
Many thanks!
PLEASE publish a timelapse of Cam 9's whole run
I worked on FMB at Fresh Catch Bistro for about 3 years. After that I worked at Doc Ford's Sanibel for 3 years as well. The drive through the Sanibel causeway was always worth driving at any time of day. Now they're both gone.
Thankfully I still have my job.
Camera 9 & the tree 🌳
Fantastic footage. Thank You for sharing. We will be looking back at that forever.
The speed of that water rising was insane! Cam 9 was a hero just like cam 5 🙌
9 sacrificed itself for all of us. R.I.P surgie 9
I was just there a few weeks ago and so glad I got to experience the famous Ft.Myers beach This is all so heartbreaking
Awesome footage guys. Cam 9 for the win.
Amazing. Thanks for this
Right in front of the Lani Kai. Camera must be at Yo Taco! Hope to see a new version in the future. 🤧
You guys did an amazing job with these cams and the broadcast stream today! I wonder if a future version would have enough room for anemometers and/or pressure sensors. You know the golden rule of upgrades...
I see y'all made it on Yahoo. It was dramatic. Good job guys!
That's seriously scary. When the ocean comes in like that it let's me know we are nothing compared to the power of nature.
Amazing footage all day long! Please do one of these in memory of camera 5 as well!
Wow! That is amazing, and frightening!
I used to live a couple blocks down the road. Doubt if the apartment is still there.
Well placed camera - a good thing it could handle water. That recording will be viewed often, I think.
Dear "Surgy," CAM 9 - We will never forget! You served us well and everyone was amazed how long you fought, even under water! I hope Severe Studios recovers and restores you to your former glory! If not, hope they turn you into a monumental trophy! Thank you and SevereStudios! EDIT: It'd be cool to see a time-stamp on this video to show people how amazingly FAST a storm surge can happen!!!!
Please dont give names like that to inanimate objects. I died of cringe.
Great job 👏🏼
I have many memories right there, crazy to see it covered in water
such great coverage everyone!
Cam 9 strong! 💪🏽💪🏽💪🏽
Spectacular and terrifying footage at the same time. Wow
One of two amazing streams.... this one and the earlier one of the 3 numbnuts being pummeled by the insane surf beside the PierSide Grill [RIP]
Live from Yo Taco.. My favorite place to get tacos... They "were" amazing.. Hope they rebuild, cuz this cam had to be on the building..
I love Yo Taco. My girlfriend and I went there all the time. I hope to see them back.
Every time you think camera 9 was going down.....wait why do I hear boss music??
Praying for ppl of Pine Island.
Whole Island is basically underwater
Awesome broadcast! My family lives in Port Charlotte. Alot of great information today. Thank you.Aso was there a manatee?
I was wondering that also!
There was a manatee that washed onto the street???
I'm not sure Cara. Someone said it in chat and I've been curious since lol
Insane timelapse
Very scary! Anyone who might be unsure about heeding beach or barrier island evacuation orders in the next major storm needs to watch this!
Great camera placement...
So many memories of all the places on FT.Myers Beach from my visits there from 1987 until about six years ago. Only the Lani Kai remains. Top O' Mast-gone. Junkanoo-Gone. Smuggler's Cove-Gone. I could go on and on. Sad.
Camera 9, The Cam, The myth, and of course THE LEGEND!!!
Gone, but never forgotten!!!
The camera angle was perfect! The light pole or palm tree, looked like the American Flag on the restaurant sign was an actual flag attached to a flag pole... but after noticing it wasn't moving, only then did I realize that it wasn't a physical flag attached to a flag pole. Great optical illusion!
Every Camera Dies, Not Every Camera Really Lives!
Full time resident on Ft Myers Beach and we stayed through the hurricane on our second floor! It was insane as we had just got back from a 10 day vacation days before the storm. The general public cannot understand what the devastation results were like and the amount of money lost. We lost my first floor and we lost a total of 5 vehicles (all paid off) in the storm. Never again.
I have lived in fort Myers for 36 years.....sadly the majority of people around here did not believe the storm surge numbers.....because we've heard them before and they are never as bad as forecasted
MY GRANDKIDS WILL KNOW THE LEGEND OF CAM 9 BY THE END OF STORYTIME
Crazy thing is this was going to come to my city, luckily i only got winds, that could have been me 😮
Great video! I live in Cape Coral and we got destroyed, definitely a hurricane I will never forget. Especially going through the Eyewall for 8 hours! It just would not stop!
Glad to hear you made it through safe. I live in Fort Myers over by Health Park, and this is about a 15 minute drive from where we live. I'm still trying to process everything that has happened. I moved here from Michigan in 2019, and 9/28/22 will be a day that I'll never forget.
RIP Surgie 9, you legend of a camera. I hope it can be recovered, I'd be interested to see what it looks like after its legendary run. Incredible footage of an incredible disaster: hopefully it can be used to educate about the dangers of storm surge.
I was in ft myers Beach today in support of FEMA, unbelievable the amount of destruction there, praying for the people there, its going to take years to recover there
Only the real remember 💯
Prayers for those in Florida and its family
Yes!! That looked like a very scarrry moment! I watched that camera as it was happening with a couple buddies of mine and we were OMG!! Camera 9 did well!
I saw 9 being played on a news station the other day
The curse of cam 9 it always gets destroyed salute to camera 9😢
Hopefully the owners can recover this legendary cam
We never would have lost cam 9 if it was build on a blue shed 😪
I watched the Lani Kai all day because my Brother was in that building during landfall. he started on the second story until he retreated to the 6th. .. we didnt know if he was alive for almost 4 days.. scary storm.
This camera was placed quite close to the other, more famous one that ended up providing better images because 1) it was about 15 above the ground and was therefore never completely submerged by the water, and 2) it wasn't aimed directly into the wind, and so the lens remained clearer and less obstructed. But both videos are excellent depictions of how catastrophic a storm surge can be.
Sit around the fire kids and listen tell, of a brave little camera when the oceans did swell.
6 days in and its still setting in. My town will never be the same. I wonder if it's even worth rebuilding or if I should start fresh elsewhere. There's nothing left.
Great job with the video. Question: you guys and two others (or maybe your other cams) all chose Lani Kai for camera placement. Definitely a great choice, but just wondering what factors into your decision-making when placing the cameras. I'm familiar with the whole island, Times Square seems like another good location.
We usually don't have a lot of time when placing 9 cameras... sometimes we get "lucky"
mother nature is terrifying
I have Antiophobia (fear of floods). I watched this anyway. The creepiest video I've ever seen. I had nightmares for 2 days straight.
I haven't had a good night's sleep since this storm has happened. This storm has really messed with my head, and I feel guilty that my girlfriend and I walked away unscathed, and lost a car due to the storm surge. Meanwhile, there are people who lost everything. I'm still trying to process all this
Could anyone tell me what app would be used now to watch live
My heart is broken. RIP Santos house, the Beached Whale, and Yo! Taco. Lani Kai, a hui hou.
Now this is how to storm chase
Camera 9 was a god among men. A true legend in the world of storm cameras. Long live camera 9!
Is Severe Studios an actual studio, set in a specific place, or is it just a name for something that is not really there? Inquiring minds want to know.
After seeing this why would anyone want to stay home with a beast of a storm like this coming at them?
Love the way you filmed this…made me feel like I was drowning…having boards, nails, glass and all that was being tossed around in the water hit my body as I was just trying to breathe.
Thank you for this video.
Anyone know the address/street of where this cam was at?
That's a view of the Lani Kai hotel, approximately from the location of "Yo! Taco" at 1375 Estero Blvd.
RIP Camera 9 2022-2022 we will always remember cam 9 ):
So . . . will the next versions have GPS trackers? Accelerometers?
RIP SurgeCam 9.
"Not for broadcast" it says, but you found a way to get this out. GOOD! *People need to know that this can and did happen!*
Then they should ask themselves "How can I make it better?" and "Why did this happen?"
This camera walked so that we could run.. salute
Any updates on the cameras that went down?
wow! at first i thought the camera was gonna fall into the water, NOT that the Storm Surge would reach over 8 Feet and Submerge the standing Camera itself!!
Damn cam9 goated asf 😂
"fIRE, CLOUDS, HAIL VAPOR, SMOKE, STORMY WIND FULFILLING HIS WORD"
Psalms
Wilson !!!!!!
Ah. Across from the Lanai Kai, I believe. I have a feeling my mom’s house may be history. Should have sold it!
May the lives affected by Ian be blessed. Also, Cam 9
It held on as long as it could
How deep was the surge when you lost your camera?
How high was this camera mounted??
The description under the video says "This cam was placed 8+ feet above the street surface."
I'm glad I do t live there no more...but wow. Just wow!!!
what is the camera model?
May I trouble you to ask what a SurgeCam is? A waterproof camera?
Yes, a hardened, waterproof, long-life camera that streams live
