Actually Steve gets it right. The songs are just seen as fantasy elements and a bit of entertaining and creative extravaganza in Shankar's films.
Other directors do more insane stuff but they are a bit cheesier and Shankar does it well.
Rajinikanth knows what works with the audience and works to do exactly that. This is something that remained not much known for a long time but now we know that there is conscious effort behind Rajinikanth working on what works and what doesn't.

Guys I don’t know if you’ve seen the movie, but the premise here is that Rajni’s character and Shriya’s character have just got married and she asks him to sing a song. He goes through a bunch of classic movie songs and they imitate the old songs in the sequence. She decides against all of those and asks him to do something in his own escapist, over-the-top, action-filled Rajnikanth style and this is it.
