His major theme in his filmography is exploring violence and non violence.
There are 3 films he made that are unparalleled and brilliant in technique and craft :
1) Thevar Magan : Thevars are the dominant caste in TN, a warring clan, their leader was the first to support Netaji Bose. However succeeding generations were violent and Casteist supremacists. Kamal plays an educated Thevar who has left his ways and come back to his village to his father. Events lead him from a non violent educated to a violent man. What it teaches him is the story.
2) Hey Raam : Just watch it. If you are over 23, have superficially known about it, do yourself a favour and watch it. A man whose wife is raped and killed in Kolkata riots plots to kill Gandhi. How he changes is the story.
3) Mahanadi : Circumstances force a very kind loving family man into the Sonagachi brothels and changes him forever.

Kamal Hassan is probably the most awarded actor in Indian cinema and many films he acted were sent to Oscars from India. He has been acting from childhood for more than 40 years. If you are interested, he made/directed commercial film(thenali, pamal k sambadam, panchatandiram etc..) and also "author" and socially based films: mahanadi, virumathi, heyram, devar magan,gunaa, nayagan etc... Personnaly i think he is an acting encyclopedy. He Can Do any role. Unfortunetaly, he was not recognized at the level he merits. He is also an excellent dancer and singer, an excellent screenplay / dialogues writer. His private life is often criticized. He is now a politician, a role where he did not yet succeed.
He is equivalent in terms of acting probably to Robert de Niro or Al Pacino. His acting skills are comparable or complementery to the late iconic figure in tamil cinema and why not Indian cinema: Sivaji Ganesan.

Nayagan is a great movie ... i have seen around 5 times, songs are in my playlist. But it is Tamil version of God father. So Hollywood guys might not realize Kamal's potential in Nayagan. There are better movies from Kamal which will give kicks to a international viewer.

And he is not a mediocre but he is very good in what ever he does. He still holds the record for most Oscar nominations for foreign language film sent from India, for this very reason he is called as Oscar nayagan(Oscar hero) in Tamil Nadu. Watch Guna, Nayagan, Kuruthipunal, Sadma, Devarmagan, Anne Shivam, Indian and hey ram to know what I meant( but I am sure you wouldn't watch ;-) ) . But atleast watch Heyram it has history of Indian and Pakistan partition in it. And it is the high time to watch and review it since we just witnessed a resolution for Jammu Kashmir problem after so long which took place during the partition time.

It's definitely arguable but personally I feel Kamal Hassan is a bit better than Amitabh Bachchan. Amitabh is rightfully the angry young man of India while Kamal Hassan has variety and has done different types of roles, some of which were impossible to pull off for an ordinary actors.
