My crown on my upper molar tooth came out and for some reason took a lot of my tooth with it, so was only part of the tooth left, not enough to get a new crown on. Went in three days ago to get it removed, my first ever extraction.. I have no fear of the dentist and never have had a bad experience but what I went through was awful. I was giving two pain injection, the second one I was given the pain was terrible..My dentist said I have curly roots and tried for 20 mins to get my tooth out but no luck. She the decided to split the tooth in half and still couldn't get it. After probably another 15 mins she called in another dentist, who eventually got the tooth out by drilling it into pieces first and taking it out bit by bit, with alot of tugging and awful pressure..But I was so happy he got it out. it also looks like the gums been cut. The first dentist said I had the start of an abcess, I was sent home with no gauze on the gum, no antibiotics and was told to take ibuprofen, no other instructions were given.I said should I not need an antibiotic but was told no. Since yesterday my whole face has swelled up right up to my eye, I have a bruise on my cheek. The adjacent tooth is very painful, My mouth tastes awful, I'm in so much pain that no ibuprofen, painkillers, salt water rinse, ice pack etc is helping. Rang my dentist this morning and they can only see me tomorrow. I have been off work two days. I definitely think it's an infection and believe I should have been given an antibiotic in the first place.. I sound silly but I'm nearly afraid to go back to my dentist for fear of anymore pain being caused.

Thanks for this video. I had my lower impacted wisdom tooth removed exactly a week ago from now. At first I suffered the expected level of pain. On day 2 the anesthetic had worn off and I began to feel greater pain. I decided the rinse my mouth with salt water, possibly too much. That evening I could feel the blood clot around the socket, and tried my best to not let it come out. But there was no option, out it came.
I looked up online and discovered 'dry socket'. For the last 5 days I have been in complete agony. I cant sleep, or even talk properly. I feel as thought somebody has sliced my throat. I have a throbbing pain to my ear and temple / side of face. My tonsils feel as though they have been cut with razor blades, I have honestly never experienced pain like this. I have been taking Paracetamol/Ibuprofen every 4 hours for the last week. I made an emergency appointment with my dentist. She rinsed it out and said she could see a new blood clot was forming. She packed it with some numbing gel, which tasted like aniseed. It temporarily eased the pain slightly, but within a few hours I was back to being in agony.
I have tried to bare with this pain in hope that I'd wake up the next day and the pain will have lessened. But unfortunately it is getting worse and worse by the day. I have called my dentist again and visiting them again tomorrow. I am hoping they give me some stronger pain killers at least to cope with this pain. I wouldn't wish this on anybody. :( :( :(

Just to follow this , I have seen been back to my dentist. She removed the stitches and rinsed out the area. She used an anaesthetic needle just so it wasn’t too uncomfortable for me. She confirmed dry socket and an infection.
She prescribed me with antibiotics and within 24 hours the pain has massively reduced. I feel so much better. Anybody watching this that feels like their pain will never end, just give it time, it will get better. If it gets too much go back to the dentist. They will always be able to help

Many years ago at age 20 I had a lower wisdom tooth extracted in my home town and then went to my summer construction job about 75 miles away. Two days later I had massive pain in my jaw. My co-workers laughed and said "dry socket". It took all my 20 year old bravado to not wimper and cry. Called my dentist and as best I could talk told them what was happening. They said come in right now, and I made that 75 miles in way less than an hour! Dentist put something in the extraction hole and the pain vanished within minutes. I don't recall any other measures, but there may have been some. You may be tough, but a dry socket is tougher.

I also got antibiotics and it started to get better within 3-5 days after I got the stitches. The stitches came out maybe 1,5 weeks ago and my jaw was very stiff and it hurt to try and open it. Now I'm pretty much back to normal, I have a hole where some food can get stuck and my jawbone hurts sometimes where the tooth used to be.

From watching this video the only thing I can think of my chances dry socket is the fact I am female and got 2 bottom wisdom removed, everything you listed except those 2 I have not done or haven’t reached yet. The thing that I do keep reminding myself is that I am in no pain and only have a bit of jaw stiffness, my surgical areas are back to pink, I have been following closely to my surgeons instructions, and started using that prescribed mouth wash you mentioned. It’s best if I don’t stress myself about it too much since stress doesn’t help with recovery. I'm currently experiencing dry socket and TMJ... The 5 doctors I've seen all have different opinions (2 ER docs, 2 dentists, ...& 1 chiropractor who actually helped some). They don't seem to believe in proper pain management. I'm only able to take acetaminophen, but it only partially dulls the intense pain. Plus, it wears off too quickly. I spend hours experiencing a living hell after it wears off, watching the time count down until I can take another dose. The dental assistant denied I was even in pain after having the tooth extracted, saying it wasn't possible bc I was numbed. I was telling them something wasn't right, but they ignored me and told me it was time to leave. They couldn't get me out of there fast enough bc it was close to the clinic closing time. My life has become a nightmare. At this point, I'm not sure if I should follow up with a primary care physician or a dentist. 🤷‍♀️

Sorry to hear about what you are going through, I know it can be very frustrating. It sounds like you have two different issues going on, dry socket and TMJ issues. The dry socket will heal over time. Can you take acetaminophen and ibuprofen? Together they work better than either alone. For your TMJ issues, find a dentist who specializes in TMJ issues. They are called orofacial pain specialists. You can google "tmj specialist near me" to find one.

My left wisdom tooth was impacted and growing sideways so I was in A LOT of pain after surgery. Day 6 came around and the pain got worst. I finally went back to the oral surgeon today and out it is dry socket. I am not sure how I got dry socket. I don't smoke and I was on a liquid diet. I have the worst extraction done this past Friday. What was just supposed to be a simple molar extraction turned into a 2-hour surgical procedure. Partly because my tooth was rooted so deep and the other part was that my doctor was a new dentist and I do feel like she was inexperienced. She had to continuously numb me up and cut my teeth up into like four pieces to dig out the tooth and extract it. After having my mouth open for 2 hours and being in excruciating pain, it took 3 hours for the pharmacy to fill my prescription medication. Here I am 4 days later and I've been in pain ever since the extraction. I decided to call up to the dentist to figure out why my mouth still hurting days later so severely and sure enough I developed dry socket. I do think that maybe I had the gauze pressed up against the whole too long and maybe it dislodged the blood clot. Because I did see a clot when I took the gauze out. But I was trying to stop the bleeding. Either way I developed dry socket and I had to go in today to have the area cleaned with saline and she used some dry socket paste.

I think I may have developed a dry socket but on the first day of having my wisdom tooth pulled. Few hours later doing everything as instructed (also having research done due to prior experience in having teeth pulled.) I took out the gauze that was damp that I left in for the instructed amount of time a blood clot came out... and it wasn’t small. It was the side of my thumb pad. The pain didn’t feel any different except for the fact that eventually the other side of my mouth didn’t hurt and this side still did. There was throbbing pain/pressure and the taste is so awful, I went to the dentist next day he told me that it’s usually rare to have it day 1 and also bc the gum was stitched up but he injected the paste and clove oil just to be safe. The pain stopped for maybe 20 minutes. Im here on day 5 and i still have the gross taste, the pain isn’t like unbearable its just really annoying bc when I try to sleep I just feel the throbbing and it like moves all around. Also the other side looks pale ish but i can barely get a look at it bc my mouth is small but theres no pain. Idk 🤷‍♀️ I just dont wanna deal with this any longer, before my wisdom teeth came out I had a bad gum infection so I havent really been able to actually eat for like a month

My top two were still slightly in my sinuses, and one on the bottom that had a small cyst sitting on top of it; so that is what hurt the most healing wise. I was worried about a dry socket after having two upper molars extracted (which I probably should not have done). It was a difficult procedure and I was fairly careful afterward. On day 3, the discomfort came, but after watching this I am encouraged. I have another appointment in 3 days so maybe I'll improve one way or another.

Ironically I've had all my upper teeth, three of my lower right molars, and all four of my wisdom teeth removed and never had dry socket. Now after having one of the molars on the left side removed because of an abscess, I think I might have it. Was done two days ago. Barely any pain after the extraction. They split it because of how deep the roots were, but otherwise very smooth compared to some the others (some broke off, a couple opened a hole in my sinuses, etc.). It even seemed to have a good blood clot. Now that clot seems to have shrunk and my pain level has skyrocketed. I'm already on antibiotics from a separate infection so getting an infection there is not my biggest concern. Just wondering if it is possible for the pain to subside quickly as the gums seem to be closing over it very quickly. I'll have to call the dentist office tomorrow but won't be able to go in quickly as they are a four hour drive from me (long story as to why I didn't go local).

Thanks for the video! I had my lower impacted wisdom tooth removed. I saw a blood clot first two days, and after a dentist visit during lunch and up to the evening when it fell off. I could no longer see it, and I started to get feverish, pain was different than straight after surgery, more bearable, but still could not get stuff done. I was perhaps very likely to get dry socket based on the 37% stat, plus I am over 24, and I vaped since the day of the operation (thinking that it is somehow better than actual smoking). So there we have it. I was not sure what sort of procedure awaits me tomorrow, and now it’s clear, and I am less worried about things ahead.

Thanks doctor for everything. A wonderful explanation of each and everything with such a kind and humble manner that everyone can easily understand all about the tooth extraction.
I am exactly starting the 4th day of extraction of my upper left wisdom tooth which was hardly removed because of its missing edges from all sides, ending in puncturing side walls of me cheeks 😢.
My bad luck is that i didn't listen carefully the directions given by my lady dentist especially about "rinising". When i came back home after extraction, blood didn't stop and continue to flow out with sliva and i used to spit more frequently within the 1st hour of my dressing gauze. I removed that gauze and starting rinsing water slowly. After few minutes i noticed it didn't stop bleeding and used more cold water to rinse and ate few scopes of ice cream.. Again, i noticed mouth was tasting like blood, i spited again and fresh blood was innthe sink.. i was afraid of this and again started rinilsing with iced water and put a new gauze at the wound and lied down in bed as i was dead tired. While lying in bed i felt more bleeding and tdied to sat while taking back 2 pillows to support my back.. after 2 hours of continue spitting and tension i removed the gauze and went again to rinse with cold water as blood was not going to stop. Again i rinsed and ate more ice cream slowly for almost an hour repeating both actions..i was feeling exhausted with tension and standing beside the kitchen sink for so long.. there was no pain luckily. Now i was sitting at couch trying to engage myself to get rid of that feelings with mobile in my hand and tv in front of me. After one hour i went to the sink, spitted and noticed Blood😮.. rinsed, again slowly for few more minutes blood was now much lower in quantity with sliva.. i ate again some ice cream and rested for half an hour. Slowly blood was going of at last after 7 hours of my tooth extraction.. i ate boiled rice with cold yougert took katafast anti inflammatory sachet and augmentation 1gm as advised by doctor and went to bed at 11 pm. I woke up early in the morning like 4 am and felt body pain feeling of mild fever which were very bad and painful. I took again white rice with some milk and took sulphadine tab in water n slept. It was 2nd day 1pm when i woke up and again with body ache with mild fever. Medicines helped me a lot and 3 days are gone safely. I heard about from one of my badminton players while playing badminton yesterday😅 searched it on youtube and found the Great video of yours..but i am feeling much better now and 80 hours of my tooth extraction are over. Feeling no pain, fever or body ache any more.. but still curious about dry socket as i have just started the 4th day😢?

I had one after getting my lower wisdom tooth taken out. My jaw felt like it had a pulse. I went back to the dentist and he packed it with clove gauze. The first couple of times it hurt but it healed pretty quickly if I remember correctly. Once it was packed the pulsating pain went away. I think the clove oil helped numb it too aside from being a natural remedy for infection.

I got all four of my wisdom teeth extracted on Friday. Right after my procedure as I was getting into the car my mouth started bleeding a lot so they made me go back in and I believe the dentist applied something to the bottom right socket where I think I had an impacted wisdom tooth. It is now Sunday and yesterday I felt nauseous and vomited a bit. Could that cause a dry socket? I looked at the back of my mouth where the stitches are and I see something white I’m kind of worried it is bone.

I have dry socket which started after the sutures ruptured from the swelling. There never was any blood that clotted and the bone was exposed.
Even Norco pain pills did not help with the pain it is that bad. But then the dentist had me come back in a week and he put a drop of Alveo paste of which it dropped out after 2 days. I have complained to the dentist numerous times that the hole is expanding to where it is 3 times its original size and the gum at the next tooth is swelling a beginning to split open. There also ulcerations similar to mouth ulcers all on the outside of the gum where the socket it. I have used warm salt water to rinse it, lightly flushed food from my socket but it is just not healing at all. It is getting bigger and the original gums look as though they are receding away from socket. I am in my 3rd week with it and it is no where near healing. The pain is excruciating and I am given only allowed 1 Norco 10 pain tablet to take a day. He said I should get by with NSAIDs and I will have to be patient for it to heal. I have been patient, but I am not stupid either I can see that the hole is much larger now with the jawbone exposed. I had been in combat, shot, stabbed and bayonetted and the pain from this is far worse

Lol, I had a tooth removed over a week ago. It was a botched root canal treatment from my previous dentist. He had messed up the dental crown which resulted in a leaky filling. Long story short, there was a cyst at the bottom of the root and the whole tooth was basically eaten by a severe decay. My current dentist, a great man btw, managed to get things done and extract it, although not without some problems as my teeth have really long and angled roots. I suspect that the blood clot was removed when I spat the gauze out. It got partly stuck on my gum so when I pulled it out, it must've dislodged the clot leaving the jawbone open. Anyway - the pain was rather strong, it was accompanied by a pungent smell of decay. It was an awful, hot and throbbing sensation which got progressively worse with sudden movement or when I talked (which my line of work didn't help since I'm a teacher). Anyway - I got some antibiotics and painkillers so things are gonna be fine.

The pain was so intense that woke me up on day 5 morning. I doubt that if I'm suffering from dry socket as the pain doesn't go and common painkillers like panadol and ibuprofen can't help. The dentist didn't even ask me if my sugars were controlled although I confirmed I was a diabetic. I'm on antibiotics and heavy diclofenac, ibuprofens and what not. Trying all sorts of mouth washes, salt gargles mixed with clove oils and all dietary recommendations. I went to three different dentists and each one tells me what to do which the other dentist told me to avoid !! I'm loosing hope and totally helpless.
