Harvesting potatoes is so much fun! This video is two years old….it’s June 2023 now. Last year was my first time and I grew in four 5 gallon buckets. Oh man…I couldn’t believe how many potatoes I got! They were delicious. I giggled and laughed out loud when I saw potatoes in the dirt!! Like I said, it was my first time ever growing potatoes….how fun it is!!
Potatoes have been an ego boost in an already rough growing season this year. I work them in containers, but love seeing folks who are able to put them in the ground. It is satisfying to think one potato can create so many others. :)
@@PLem573 How did that go in the 5 gal containers? I planted some in 7, and 10 gallon containers and worry they might be too small. Hopefully it works out... looks like they have about a month left.
This was my first year of planting potatoes. I’m at Wisconsin zone 5B. I planted a small bed of russet potatoes and another small bed, of purple majesty potatoes. Both pretty small cause I didn’t really know what I was doing. I wanted to try it out. The russet potatoes got planted earlier, foliage died back and I harvested them today. I am really impressed with harvest. I haven’t had a chance to weigh them yet but it looks great. God has really blessed me with bountiful harvest. Praise God.
Glad you mentioned having two seasons but also acknowledged NOT having two season. Most youtube garden channels seem to think the world lives in california.
I dig them up when I'm ready to eat them. After Thanksgiving Day, I dig up the rest. This way my potatoes last twice as long. My Grandaughter had the genius idea of leaving the tiny ones in the ground. They come up and start growing in May and that's a sign for me to start chitting what few potatoes I have left from the previous year.
I always heard you shouldn’t plant potatoes dug out of your garden back to your garden. Maybe that’s just a salesman pitch for you to buy new potatoes?

Hi there Lonely Pines Farm! I'm Subscribed. I did a second try of planting several bags of potatoes over the 2024 Spring season. I had noticed that the red skin potatoes vines in one bag wasn't looking its usual spring self over the past few weeks, I could see that the bag felt heavier and thought that was strange until I did some UA-cam checking. Yesterday I harvested that one bag, leaving the other bags to continue their separate journeys. This was my second adventure, my first was 2022, so from a few pieces of one "eyed Potatoe," I harvested fourteen varied sized reskinned potatoes. Really nice size! Surprised but I am happy with this harvest and have been encouraged to let the other bags of varied types of potatoes continue growing. Getting another bag or tub started while my area of Washington zone 9a is still getting some sunlight along with the rain. However, here's why I tuned in today for you and your wife's knowledge, I didn't know how to cure the red potatoes. Thanks, to you both for the information. I will not rinse them, but I will sew a burlap bag together and store them in my garage for Fall, Winter or early Spring use. God bless!

Nothing beats the beautiful earthy taste of fresh dug spuds . I'd urge everyone to try different varieties too and taste the difference ! I grew 24 different varieties a few years back , although only 4 tubers of each , as a 'taste/usage ( boil, roast , mash , jacket )' experiment . Great fun ! . A question I'd like to ask please , Do you save your own seed every year ? I save mine for one year , but buy new Scottish seed potatoes for the following year , then save again . Be interested to know your thoughts/practice . Happy growing and all hail the awesome potato !!! 🍻
Hello across the pond! 👋 Kind of crazy to know we have international viewers!!! 🍻 I purchased ours from local farmers at a market 3 years ago. Each year I make sure to hold over some to be our seed potatoes for the following spring. I'll introduce new potatoes the same way, always growing our own seed as long as the prior crop does well. I need to branch out more though apparently, we only have 4 varieties this year! 😆

I grew 24 different varieties a few years back , although only 4 tubers of each , as a 'taste/usage ( boil, roast , mash , jacket )' experiment . Great fun ! .
A question I'd like to ask please ,
Do you save your own seed every year ?
I save mine for one year , but buy new Scottish seed potatoes for the following year , then save again . Be interested to know your thoughts/practice .
Happy growing and all hail the awesome potato !!! 🍻
Hello across the pond! 👋 Kind of crazy to know we have international viewers!!! 🍻
I purchased ours from local farmers at a market 3 years ago. Each year I make sure to hold over some to be our seed potatoes for the following spring.
I'll introduce new potatoes the same way, always growing our own seed as long as the prior crop does well. I need to branch out more though apparently, we only have 4 varieties this year! 😆
This was awesome, short and full of good info. Thanks a lot!
Cool. Beans
Thank you! From Baudette Minnesota

Just harvested 12 lbs today for 2021 will try to plant one more batch to harvest in October
Thank you so much, this is my first yr. It was great!
4:52 just getting started with harvesting alone for the first time and I’m excited … helped often before but yay today I get them good boys out which I have planted and watered in a friends garden. I guess they all grow in one area per plant… looking forward. All the best for your shop! And thanks for the vid
I have watched tons of these videos and yours is the best. Also, I also live in WA state so it’s nice to be in the same growing zone. This is my first attempt at potatoes, and I planted several varieties. I am excited to harvest them soon!
Hi neighbor! 👋
Good stuff thank you. I've harvested a pot already due to leaves dying off, was a good yield actually, and really delicious, but its good to know I can let the leaves die back a bit before harvesting, was concerned about that. Sending love from Manchester England 🌼 🤗
Yay! Glad to hear its going well! Thanks for the love, the world needs more of you! Happy Growing!
Thanks for the information, I just harvested mine today. So happy with the results.
After I get everything in my garden I need I have little space for potatoes. But I plant them anyway. They're just that much fun. This year I planted some in cardboard boxes. So far they are fine
I am trying to grow potatoes this year! and so far the foliage is huge and lush so I am hoping it will be a nice harvest when its time
yay first year planting potatoes - in buckets! Seen so many videos on how to plant them, thanks for the video on when to harvest them and how to keep them! I'll come back to this video in a couple months :)
I just moved into a home in SW Washington (zone 8b) that has a garden and the previous owner had potatoes growing. I’m a brand new gardener myself so a potato plant randomly grew out of the ground. I had no idea when to harvest them and I noticed a purple flower appear with a little yellow center recently. Thank you for this video. I was unsure when to start digging.
So glad you found it helpful, hope you have a great summer!
I’m in mid Missouri and have learned to dig my potatoes when needed. I have raised organic beds and most winters I can dig year round.
Great harvest! Have a blessed day
Thank you, you as well!
thanks. clearing in the forest here. potatoes in large containers to control the soil and keep the local mole population from eating them
Thats a good crop of Spuds there mate. Im in the Uk, trying to grow red spuds, which seem harder to grow. Just taken over a hundred new potatoes out of the ground and planted my second batch. good pesticide is washing up liquid, kills bugs and feeds to plants
Looks like fun !
Excellent video! This was the best vid on growing spuds that I have seen so far.
What a fantastic harvest. I have red and russet.... Still flowering at 90 days. Still warm here in S.C.. I am going for 120 days so early October or late September. I am watching the leaves. Thank you for your great tips.
Mt. St. Helen is worth a shout
My first year planting anything. I planted in buckets, yukon gold. So we will see. Thank you for the video I had no clue when to harvest. Very helpful!!
Thank you! I'm starting to plant and i'm starting with potatoes. I'm excited to be a new gardener.
Dont let anybody or anything sway you from that! Learning to grow your own food and some beautiful flowers is incredibly rewarding. and smart. 🥰

I have a laundry basket with potatoes planted in it! I had a few sprout in the bag and said what the heck! I'll see how many I get out of 4 potatoes that would have been tossed out! Thank you for the harvesting tip. Ma 2
How it went?
A sanctuary of peace and tranquility. 🕊️
Thanks. I enjoyed the video.
Just found this video, fantastic looking tatties there, I grow mine in huge tubs, just as you say, leave till plant is dying off then lift, or in my case, tip the tubs over and reap the rewards.
Kind regards from Scotland 🏴
