Netflix’s Dark is a series that is full of mystery and asks more questions than it answers. In season 2 we learned more about Jonas Kahnwald (Louis Hofmann) at three different points in his life through time travel. At the end his older self, who goes by the name Adam, kills the love of his life Martha Nielson (Lisa Vicari). Adam is the leader of a group called Sic Mundus who have a god particle time machine under Winden’s church. One of the biggest mysteries the show has yet to explain is how the young Jonas becomes the older versions of himself.
At the end of Dark season 2 the younger Jonas is saved by an alternate version of Martha who says she’s from another world. Jonas leaves Winden and possibly the world we know with this mysterious new alt-Martha character. We expect that in season 3 he will visit her world, and we hope to learn when he becomes The Stranger.
Middle Jonas saves Magnus, Bartosz, and Franziska from the apocalypse at the end of Dark season 2. We guess that The Stranger will end up in 1921 eventually to form Sic Mundus and become Adam. We know that older Magnus is working closely with Adam and Sic Mundus, and we expect that two unnamed characters are older versions of Franziska and Bartosz. This video explains how time travel works in Dark, and all the different timelines and time periods.
In the second season Jonas learns that Adam wants to destroy the world, and joins forces with Claudia Tiedemann who believes that can alter the course of events. He helps the younger adult Claudia survive the apocalypse in the bunker with her daughter Regina. Peter and Elisabeth Doppler, and the younger Noah also survive in the bunker.

This show is the most flawless I've ever seen - thank you so much to the makers for not bowing down to lesser intelligence to suit the audience and for not compromising on quality with additional seasons. It will all end this season and I am so confident it will finish at one of the best shows ever.

This is the most creative and craziest series ever.
I think Claudia wrote the notebook. She's seen researching at the library, trains young Jonas for a year and is holding the missing pages. I think Jonas steals the notebook when he turns from her (sans the pages she tore out and which Noah gets back)

Haha I remember when I first watched it I was like, "wow, I need to learn more about German TV," went to Reddit and found a bunch of threads with Germans saying it was an anomaly. It really is of the highest quality.
Unfortunately it is an anomaly. I remember distinctly almost NOT watching it, after my former flat mate suggested it to me, because in my opinion, all German TV, whether it be film or show is utter trash. I am sooo glad, that in a bout of boredom I decided to go against my prejudice and watch DARK anyway. Otherwise I would have missed out big time. o_O
@@CaitSithOfWutai Babylon Berlin is excellent. And Das Perfum and the one with the teenage drug dealers were totally respectable. I almost feel like there is a mini renaissance going on in German shows. Then again Dark might be skewing my objectivity.

Paradoxical family tree ,it was my quest for years after watching that 'predestination' .Nothing got quenced my thirst about this ,but now this 2nd season gave more .And you know how craving I go for the next....?

Season 1 episode 2 I believe has a scene with Stranger Jonas in the hotel room, as the shot pans that gun is on top of the suitcase the time machine is in. I don’t think you see him with it again till he gets it from Hanna. Don’t know if this means anything
THEORY: there are three alternate timelines, each in their closed retro-causal loops but intrinsically connected. This forms the ‘Triquetra’ symbol.
We know an alt-Martha world, and Claudia mentioned seeing a ‘world without Jonas/Adam’. If there one and the same we yet to find out.
Interesting thought, but knowing now at the end of season 3 about who has written the book, it wouldn't make much sense for the symbol to resemble the three alternative worlds.
I think the gun wasn’t jammed. It works for Agnes not for mystical reasons (“it is her destiny for it to work”) but because she flicks off the safety. Noah, so cool and methodical until now, not only forgot to take off the safety but was too anxious and confused to figure it out in the moment. [This doesn’t exclude the possibility of some form of inevitability, but the mechanism wasn’t a miracle.]

I think it’s more a discussion of no ones good and bad, a central theme is that everyone justifies what they doing is ‘good’ but in reality it’s their own selfish intentions, Adam wanting to save Martha, and Claudia wanting to save her daughter.

Hey Pete, love all your Dark videos, just wanted to say thanks for making them even though they don't draw the audience your other videos do. A labor of love. And I love this show too, so so much.
One thing I was hoping you'd address re: alt Marta and alt worlds is the way they may interact with the rules of time travel and the closed loop Dark timeline. Sic Mundus Creatus Est - and thus the world was created - is written on the door that one opens to time travel through. Might not they be saying that every time someone travels back in time and changes anything, they're creating / spinning off an alternate reality? One in which they've changed something, one in which they haven't? This shows what a mess and a problem time travel is and makes more sense of Adam's plan to solve the problem by destroying things. Cutting the knot instead of untangling. As always it's headache inducing to think about any of this but tell me what you think!
It's an interesting idea. In this video I tried to focus only on what they've shown us to this point, which I interpret as deterministic. Alt Martha's arrival could throw that into question, but we haven't really learned anything about her. I think Adam and Claudia's motivations are more than what we know, and they are the two characters we know who are aware of alternate world(s)/realities. Beyond that my thinking just goes in circles haha.
I can't wait to see what they do with it. It's fascinating how early in his life Jonas is introduced to the most advanced time machine we've seen, and the alternate world. He also spent a year learning about time travel with Claudia who says she's seen the world where he doesn't exist.
The 3 cycles makes sense as we see every person in at most 3 different versions, the only exeption being Jonas, where we see 2019 jonas, hanged jonas, stranger jonas and adam jonas, which would make me believe adam might not even be jonas but alt jonas?

GoT happens when you have writers that have based all their work on another writer's material and then run out of material to work with so start making it up as they go along. Dark was planned out from start to finish by the same writers and was always intended to be three seasons long. It's very unlikely to suddenly take a hard turn into mediocrity.
They can't. But as the episodes proceed, it will become more and more predictable. The shows gives a lot of clues.. so everything will be clear.. !

I'm guessing they're parallel universes & they're tethered together having one universe where mikkel doesn't go back in time thus Jonas doesn't exist & this whole time Jonas has been traveling through two different universes not just through time & it was probably created from the nuclear explosion.

I think you right about a universe existing without Jonas, but I think traveling through universes would be a special kind of travel with specific prerequisites that we only observed once with alt-Martha.

Here's my theory. The alternate reality where Martha is Jonas, will have an older version of Martha named Eve. So Adam and Eve, they will be intertwined i think. Really intrigued to see how it pans out.

dark its like the matrix with a few twists in it, there aint good or bad guys but instead its a big chess game of whom gets the most check mates (with adam and claudia been the main players, jonas is claudia's most affordable chess piece while noah is adam's most affordable chess piece), i say its like the matrix because adam can be seen as the architect and claudia the oracle, jonas is not the chosen one just like neo is not the chosen one in the matrix but they still play a big role in their set of reality due to wanting to save their love interest (jonas wating to save martha no matter what, just like neo in wanting to save trinity), noah could be seen as agent smith in were he follows the system till he questions freedom and then rebels against it, the real trigger that sets everything off is mikkie
Hi Pete, I recently did a rewatch of Dark,and I noticed there seems to be 4 Jonas's. The young one the old one the middle aged one, but when Jonas talks to his father he asks Mikkel why he went back to the caves, and Mikkel says that you, Jonas came and took him there. So, who is the 4th Jonas? Keep up the good work.
Jonas leads Mikkel through the caves after he talks to his father. He leaves with Claudia and spends a year with her. Michael committed suicide in June and Mikkel travels in November.
Alt Marta must come from a timeline where Jonas was successful in saving her (maybe with old Claudia). And now she's trying to fix the main timeline that is stuck in this deterministic loop (on its 3rd cycle). Love the vids and the show. Thanks!

I don't think so Claudia said she saw a world without Jonas so I think that's where alt Martha is from she's like Jonas of her world and she might become eve in her world like Jonas became Adam in ours

She comes from a world where there IS no Jonas, and Mikkel didnt go through the cave, oddly enough it looks like there is no mikkel in the other world also

If Noah and Helga were behind the kidnappings, then they were ordered by Adam.. My gut is Adam is doing the "right" thing, but taking drastic measures to complete everything, and the kids disappearing looks like some kind of diversion / motion setter, Adam HAS to know the kid room time machine doesnt work, and obviously has his own personal blob time machine in 1921, so why Noah and Helga have to kidnap kids becomes a little confusing as there doesnt even seem to be any point in kidnapping and killing MADS nielsen, Ulrichs little brother.. and WHY send the dead body to 2019 to get the police involved..?
But whats also puzzling is its Future-younger Jonas after training with CLAUDIA that brings mikkel to the caves... so NOT an Adam plan...

I really like that Peter shows clips of the show while he is talking about it. I hate those channels with someone just talking. Nobody likes to watch talking heads.
Just watched the intro-sequences of season 1 and 2. Hope that the DARK-logo will be on the left side of the screen in the third intro-sequence, because in Season 1 its on the right side and in season 2 its in the middle. ByTheWay ... I asked myself if the visual style of the title sequences (mirroring the images) was a concept from the start. Mirrors symbolising the beginning, the end and alternate realities ... seems logic to me.
Pete, thanks for these videos. My question is about the different ways of time travel. In the 1920's Adam already has the best way of time travel (God's Particle), when Noah is still young. Then why send Noah to the future to build the chair apparatus? Or why are they building the tunnels? Or why do this all during the same time? I guess they discovered the tunnels first and wanted to enhance the power of it to be able to travel to any time they want and that's why they wanted to build the chair in the bunker above the tunnel-power? But then there is the other time travel device also. I don't get the connection between all these ways of time travel.
All the time machines are evolutions of the one that came before it. So, they all need to be built. Adam explains this to Jonas in season 2 episode 5 before he sends him back to the day before Michael's suicide.
Youre onto something I think with wanting to build a device that is stronger for time travel as a potential reason building the kids room time machine there...but its pretty obvious it NEVER works... it seems to only fry peoples eyes and brain... it doesnt feel like a time machine at all really, but more of a device to kill.....now...WHY Noah and Helga keep killing children is a mistery...but whats not a mystery is Noah got his orders from Adam... so ...why is Adam killing the children? not to create a diversion over mikkels disappearance, because its young future jonas that sends mikkel to the caves, trained by Claudia, so NOT an Adam decision...
It seems more and more likely that, Adam, who is Jonas, remembers that Helga switched places with him when the portal opened, and has created a room for a child, so that when Helga gets transported to it, he can have a "friendly" environment and a bed and such until he is found (Ulrich locked him in)...still doesnt explain the killing machine tho lol....
It feels like Claudia might be the one who has messed everything up, and as evil as Adam looks, he looks like he is the one trying to fix everything in all honesty, despite the measures he takes

When we first meet Aleksander in 1987 he buries the gun and the passports it reminds me of when Jonas travels to 1921 and buries his yellow outfit and belongings. Don’t know if there is something to this similarity but possibly Aleksander is a time traveler???
There is probably more to his story. He could be a traveler or he could be under the influence of one of them. It's been a while since I made the season 3 questions video, but I think I discussed it in that one.

You seem to have forgotten a details. there are changes in the timeline, we saw them. changes in the photos (the photo of Ulrich and Mads are not always the same in the police files about the case disapperance), in the dates, slight changes of events (in a scene, Ulrich says to Katharina he got suspended, in another, it's Charlotte who informs her Ulrich was suspended). it seems that little things are changed but the major events stay the same, so in that sense, Jonas is right

You mentioned Aleksander would be dead but he is one character that has had very little to do with the story but I still think there is more to him. He is under a alias, so who was Boris Neiwald. Neilson + Kahnwald... Let that settle in for a bit. This show is great but head spinning.
Locutus perhaps Hannah’s son from 1953. Since she introduced herself as Nielsen and her real name is Kahnwald. Or his parents are a Nielsen and a Kahnwald, maybe Jonas and Martha

I've just binged season two. Still to start on season three but I like to indulge myself with some videos like this before I start.
TL;DR: some small change in the original timeline must have occurred causing the alt universe to spring into existence
After reading a bit about time travel, I have a theory that the existence of the alternative universe is the result of some sort of change that occurred in the original one. It is maybe a small change, but it led to the creation of the so-called "trousers of time" with two alternative universes. While the new one did not exist prior to this (presumably small) change, once it sprang into existence, it had already existed since the beginning of time (I do hope this sounds clear enough).
Prior to the creation of the universe, the original one did have its cycles, with people really living their life again and again. This could help explain why the time machine needed to be rebuilt again and again, so it gets renewed instead of succumbing to the decay of time. Otherwise, there would have been another problem outlined in bootstrap paradoxes - if the object behind the paradox does not get remade it would inevitably start to decay.
LOL I think the whole season 3 is required to even explain seasons 1 & 2. Worse case is I doubt if season 3 can explain everything.

nothing can change, we have seen the same characters in the past-present and future thus it happened, is happening and it will happen.
time is deterministic and all what they can do really is to explain this vicious cycle (loop).
Ok Captain Obvious So, whats gonna happen next? How is the story gonna end?
This isn't entirely true. The loop only exists within the knot created by the explosion at the reactor. Anyone caught within the loop is stuck within the deterministic cycle but Adam is trying to destroy the knot itself rather than change the loop. This would result in the loop never having existed and many of the characters never having been born.
Claudia and Noah are mistaken about what Adam is trying to achieve. He's not trying to destroy the whole world; he's trying to destroy their little piece of it stuck in the knot because it should never have existed in the first place. This is also why he becomes a villain: in his mind, none of it will matter once he succeeds because they'll all be erased from time. He shoots Martha to actually save her, because if the loop never happens then she'll never be hurt by Jonas and never get killed by him.

i know, season 3 will try to make sense of the naive human wishes to change things by action, but time is a line and if we've seen the past, present and future we should logically deduce that nothing can be changed.

At 5:34, we see that younger Noah is a belt with suspenders kind of guy. A definite fashion faux-pas. I think this tells us that Noah is someone who takes extra steps to cover his a**.

where did Claudia get the design for time machine?
Noah has been working on the chair time machine at the start of Season 1. I'd imagine he and Adam eventually develop the suitcase model and create the blueprint.
You forgot to mention what happened to Helge and Jonas when they touch each other.. What happened to kid Helge since he traveled to 1986..

Noah was obviously dispatched by Adam to go find and "mentor" Helga, and Helga has been working for Noah travelling thru time kidnapping the chldren needed to keep the cycle to continue being a cycle.. if thats not the reason, then Helga is just a plain child murderer...
which is terrible but , explained at the same time from being over-mothered, beaten half to death by a strange man, being inexplicably pulled to a different time period and trapped, not to mention time travelling a LOT supposedly damages you ...soo...its not far off that helga was simply a child murderer who had the ability to time travel and Noah oversaw everything EITHER from sick twisted pleasure OR because of an Adam calculation... hopefully this gets cleared up in season 3, but i fear that if they dont revisit that, we just have to assume the helga is messed up narrative

When Jonas and Helge touch, Helge is transported to where Jonas is at the time. Maybe Elisabeth will go to where Charlotte is (that is, the apocalypse), and as for Charlotte, I really think there is no way to know where she will end up.
I think they both stay where elizabeth is and live a fine life.
When Charlotte and Elizabeth touch, they do indeed switch, unfortunately for Elizabeth, she will die in that explosion to complete her life cycle, but was very happy to see her mother one last time.. As for Charlotte, odds are she wont be transported to 2053 but most likely a different time in the past, Jonas didnt go to helgas bunker, he went to 2053 instead...now whether that person always goes to 2053 we will soon find out, but it doesnt seem right putting charlotte in 2053 for some reason, we need to find out how she gets raised by tannenbeum (in 1986) and we need to find out how she was brought by noah from 2040ish

At this point im kind sure that Bartosz is Agnes husband and Tronte's father. Also, we never get to see who's Regina's father so im asuming that Tronte is actually Regina's father (beacuse of all the flirt we get to see with Claudia)... and if that's the case that means that Regina is actually an Ulrich, so Bartosz is Jona's Uncle (and his own Great great parent (?)). Can't wait to season 3!

17 year old magnus and franziska would be 50ish in 1921, coinciding with their appearances
and 48 yeard old Jonas (yes, hes 48ish surprisingly but do the math lol) the stranger that is, well add another 33 years to the 48 and you get a very old Adam in 1921.

I believe that he‘s actually from the alt universe (without knowing it of course) and may be the child of Helge and Claudia. I believe that in that universe none of the main events in season 1 happened. When Claudia said „I‘ve seen a world without you“ she‘s probably referring to that universe. The only reason Jonas couldn’t exist would be because Mikkel never travelled to the 80’s. So if Jonas doesn‘t exist there, then that means that Adam doesn‘t exist either. Therefore Noah never got in touch with him, Helge was never brainwashed by Noah, none of the children disappeared, etc. So theoretically speaking, Helge could have turned out completely normal, because the whole incident with Ullrich would have never happened. I believe that he could have possibly had a child with Claudia, that could be Peter. There are still 3 main mysteries surrounding the whole Claudia-Helge-Tronte trio. First of all, we don‘t know who Reginas father is. We don‘t know who Peters mother is and we don‘t know who Trontes abusive father was. I think there is an obvious parallel between the fact that we don‘t know anything about Regina‘s father and Peter‘s mother.

There is only one Tannhaus machine that people carry around with them. It shows up at the same place at different points in its existence which is the same as one of the characters interacting with their younger/older self.

I don't think Noah killed a man in s2e1 is Bartoz.
Jonas will come to the conclusion that it doesn't matter if he does anything 'evil' because the loop makes it all inconsequential. He wants to end the cycle, which would mean that none of the things in the loop actually happen, meaning anything bad that he does would be undone. You can see how he transitions and becomes more cynical with each of his versions. Jonas absolutely does become Adam after exhausting all other options.
