How Do Avocado Farmers Spend Their Work Day?

- After a long 2 year battle with illness my wife is finally back on her feet and helping me tend our avocado grove. We grow all kinds of tropical fruit such as avocado, mango, mamey, sapodilla, caimito, and monstera deliciosa. We had a great day working in the avocado farm!

You and your wife just displayed what character really is, what comes out under distress, troubles, crisis and pressures. You three are more valuable then your weight in gold. God is proud and only blessing will come, you passed the test! ❤ Bill
thank you Bill
I am so grateful for you and your beautiful, healthy wife
thank you I appreciate your comment.
Your health is something people take for granted ! Great to see you on your way to recovery !!!
So true, we suffered a house fire then a month later she was in the hospital, then sick and trying to recover for two years. It's amazing how both of us have changed in attitude since those events.
I always learn something on this channel. Always!
So happy Noe is feeling better and able to get out on the farm. I can only imagine what a frightening time it was for all of you.
Thank you Nena. It was a double whammy because she became ill at the same time we were living in a hotel because we'd been burned out of the house. One day everything is normal then a minute later you're saying to yourself dang this is what it feels like to watch your house burn down then a month later we're rushing to the hospital. Anyhow, enough doom and gloom from me 🤣
I always look forward to your comments.
@@SleepyLizard I hate that such bad thing have happened to y y'all. May there always be brighter days ahead.
She gives that innocent magic to your videos.
Love u both so much! ❤
Thank you Serguei
I had put a comment on another video asking how you harvest, and 30 seconds later I find this video, so now I know and nice to see that your wife is happy and healthy again.

Ya'll have a wonderful farm. Happy find out your wife has recovered from what she was dealing with. Learned about a bunch of different avocados.
Yo Ben! How you doing? Keep your pics coming. Your new place looks amazing!
I'm so happy for her! I too have been battling an illness for 2 years still not sure what it is. Can't wait to get my energy back so I can go out and play with my avocado trees.

Doug, I'm glad you liked it. This UA-cam thing is a mystery, very difficult to predict what people will watch and what they'll skip.
Loved it. So happy for you both. Keep up the good work. Best of health and happiness.
thanks for the encouragement Eddy!
I'd been working 16 hour shifts and had missed any videos about your wife being sick. I'm glad she's feeling better. Thank you for another great video. I'll order a box in the morning. Just got off work. Enjoy your evening.
Abe, thanks for the comment. I don't think we mentioned it in any videos. Not that we were trying to hide it or anything...more of a stiff upper lip kind of reaction to the difficulty...we also had a fire displace us from our house for 7 months so she had to spend the first 6 months of her illness in a cramped hotel that we were living in until they fixed the house. The channel and working in the farm served as an escape for us.
Sorry to hear about the illness, glad to see you guys are recovering. And thanks for sharing a little bit with us. Hopefully in the future you can share more about your illness and what you did to get better.
Pierre, we will. Covid did damage to her vagus nerve and it took about 20 months for the doctors to discover it and another 4 for the medication to do it's job. I'm not saying the doctors missed anything, rather that it took that long for the medical community to learn the virus caused this kind of damage.
"That idiot was me" HAHAHAHA

Florida. Sunny, warm, nice. Winter has hit us in Poland. 🥶 It won't be warm until March. 👍👍👍
Ra, I remember growing up in PA and this time of year we are just getting used to the cold and snow and ice. Beautiful time of year but I prefer the warm sunny weather we have here.
@@SleepyLizard 👍👍👍
I didn't know there was a size requirement. Will the avocado grow bigger?
the size indicates that it is ripe. yes the longer you wait the bigger it grows...to a limit of course.
What a beautiful way to live. I’m jealous.
thank you.
how cool although Im climbing arborist , I so enjoy the small jobs that my wife works with me , what joy working with the one partner that we care for so much. plus my wife is pretty awesome. so I pay her because she earns it tree trimming can be very labor intensive.

it's the greatest.
Amazing- inspiring clips. Thanks for sharing a bit of your life with the Net. I would love to start a transition to move from Corp Office as well. It seems tough. Finding the right land and the wait time to have trees producing. All advice is great. Love your videos.
Thank you Victor.
Awesome. I saw hats like hers in Colombia 👍
Mike, yeah that's a Colombian style hat. Very observant.
How I would love to do what you. No! I am not fooled that life is easy, but life is more rewarding. I cannot think of anything more important anymore in my life in 2022. There are times in your videos that things come across so damn funny. Like 'If the ball doesn't fit in the hole, then it's time to stop it from hanging" at least that was my naughty thought at the time.
Yep, you nailed it. It's a very rewarding lifestyle and we have the most interesting friends and neighbors. It's a great lifestyle. I try to be just a little funny if I can 😂
@@SleepyLizard If I lived or ever come over there on holiday in the future, I will be sure to make sleepy lizard farm a must destination. Love this channel
Actually looks like fun just one question
I'm in Southern California
Are you not brusing the fruit by dropping, bang, dumping from box to box????
I just read some of your other replies
Hi Louise, no, it's not a problem at all. Fresh off the tree an avocado is hard as rock. in fact, what you see in this vid is nothing compared to when the guys are dumping a cherry picker...that's a few hundred lbs crashing down all at once.
Oh I forgot to ask how large of an acreage is the farm? How many trees are in production right now if you don’t mind me asking?
Hi Pat, the main farm where I make the videos is 5 acres. I don't have a count on the trees. We also lease other properties on an annual basis.
Hi Tom, I have an avocado tree in my yard that needs trimmed, can you recommend someone here in Miami to do the job? Thanks, love your videos👍🏻
Yo Robert, how you been? Send me a text, my number is in the "about" section in the channel.
Hello Tom, I just bought an avocado tree and I want to plant it inside my raised bed. The raised bed is kinda deep but I’m trying to use the bed for a couple of fruit trees. Will the roots reach the ground if I don’t plant really deep? Thank you
Hi Lovie, congratulations on your tree. You'll be fine with the raised bed and you never have to worry about roots, they find their way wherever they wanna go 😝. my only recommendation would be to not overcrowd the trees, they need a lot of space and you don't want them competing for nutrients from the ground.
@@SleepyLizard Thank you so much Tom!😁 love your videos and keep up the good work!
He’s not like a pro he IS a pro. 😂
🤣
Este video es tierno.
Gracias.
Hi Tom great video been watching your channel for some time. I need to try your Florida avocados. I’m a hobbyist Avo farmer with about 50 trees in San Jose CA east Foothills and 20 trees at my parents place in Vista North San Diego county. My main question is can anybody in Florida get avocados to produce year round? For us the combination Hass-Reed-Fuerte is unbeatable for year round Harvest. If you add in Lamb and Mexicola Grande you get an even more robust year round harvest. But I’m
Super interested in trying what you grow as it is a totally foreign world to me the West Indian race avocados. I grow 18 varieties but mainly the standard production varieties work the best so I stick with them.
Hi Pat, we have almost the full year covered here in South Florida. I've heard there is now a variety that harvests in March. If true that plugs the gap.
@@SleepyLizard that’s good to hear
Hello dear m ur fan
thanks for reaching out Jodinger. Do you like to eat avocados?
@@SleepyLizard yes of course I hv one avocado tree trying to go seedlings
@@joginderpal555 oh yes!! grow yer own.
question mr sleepy lizard guy. If people pay for the avocados by weight why dont you wait longer to pick the fruit. longer = more weight = more money right? is it a labour issue because you cant pick them all at once? Great video, Thank you!
Thank you for your question. Each variety has a season. The season last about 90 days and we picked them from biggest to smallest. They hit their max size in that season. For example, once my chow cats at 3 pounds they’re pretty much done they’re not gonna grow to four. But if I wait too long, then they’re out of season and they taste sour. For that reason we pick each variety within its designated time of the year.
@@SleepyLizard makes alot of sense, much love and thanks for teaching us everything there is to know about what you do.
❤

Uh oh it sounds like he's going to try to make his wife learn how to work....🤣😛😂
He is. 😝
Is that his wife!?!!?!? No way!!!!!
you should see his girlfriend.
farmers need to be good in math too huh. How do you measure the size for the avocados that are way up in the sky? What kind of sickness did your wife has if you dont mind me asking ( you dont have to answer if it is too private)? I am glad she feels better now. Farming is labor intensive kind of work, it takes a while to get adjusted.
Hi JKBC, we do the bulk of our picking from the bucket of a cherry picker so we can use the tester before we pick...also later in the season just about all the fruit are big enough so you really only use the sizer if one looks small.
My wife was one of the people who were hospitalized for Covid. It almost killed her and then the subsequent recover took two years...she'd make progress then regress and go back into the hospital. It's behind her now.
@@SleepyLizard Thanks for taking time answering questions. The avocado looks tempting.
Are we measuring Lobster crab or avocados
Hard to tell from the price sometimes🤣
I think the guys think your wife is cute bro
S*** it's good for the channel
And have a good day my avocado friend
I think you might be right 🤣
Would you put the info of the picker?
Gadiel, I will. You're not the first to ask. I'll reply later when I have it in front of me.
Uncle, The Aunty needs a big hunting knife like the one you usually carry around.
She's got a few. In fact her and my son have a matching set of hunting knives. 🤣. I don't even wanna mention where she keeps the dagger she got at the renaissance festival.😈
@@SleepyLizard A family which kills together. Heartwarming. I grew up the same way. My dad taught me how to shoot and slaughter. As a child, most of what we ate was "organic and wild harvest". Nobody was using pesticides on the deer and wild boar we shot.

Land of the green skin avocado this is all foreign to me so I'm enjoying this I'm from Southern California I could tell you upside down and backwards everything from Reed avocados Hass avocados everything else the how why and what for, . But Florida? . Well alright then rainy Sunday I'm checking it out
Thank you for your comment. Maybe some day we can trade Florida avocados for California avocados
@SleepyLizard oh yeah I hope you gal stays good health, 👍 slow work day, more rain . Maybe snow,
Is there a tool that can help with removing the avocado meat out of the thinner varieties?
I usually peel the skin by hand which is not the solution you're looking for. My preferred method is to cut in wedges and eat it right out of the skin. I'm not aware of a tool. Sometimes I'll scrape one out with a small soup spoon.
Thanks so much for the quick response.

Ignorant question--when unripe and very hard they are apparently NOT prone to bruising at all? I cringe a bit seeing them dropped a couple feet into bins or whatever.
Bo, they are like billiard balls. You should see how hard they slam down from a cherry picker. The only risk is that you nick the skin of you graze the edge of the bin or if you accidentally dig a chunk out if you swipe it with your fingernail. But yeah they are hard as rock.
@@SleepyLizard Great to know that, I've seen others treat them that way too so figured as much but I'm always so delicate with them no matter what. Picking in volume as you do, being overly careful has significant cost....could double your work.
I have my 1st half dozen 'normal sized' avos hanging on one tree rt now. Planted a dozen or so all diff types only few yrs ago. :D
@@Mrbfgray Yeah, and we are much more delicate with other fruit like mangos and bananas and especially our loquat and star fruit. Loquat and starfruit are easily damaged.
@@SleepyLizard Sure. I pick my peaches as ripe as possible and I don't even stack them more than 2 or 3 deep, like to individually wrap them in paper towels before giving small bags to neighbors...super fragile which is why store bought one's are crap. :D
Oh Whaaaat? Picking schedule? I had no idea that even existed, and you get told what of your OWN fruit you are allowed to pick? That's shocking omg!
Tom, get a fake wicker clothes hamper and put back straps on it, like a backpack. Measure, cut and drop it in the basket over the shoulder and into the basket/ backpack. Please, don’t think I’m trying to be a Monday morning quarterback. I suffer from a bad back, all that bending down would kill me.
Tony, thank you for the suggestion. My goal is to own a cherry picker by this time next year.
Kerri, that's actually to protect us farmers. It keeps immature fruit from going to market. If somebody picked a bunch of Monroe in the summer for example the consumer would be none the wiser but when they bought them and took them home the fruit would never ripen, it just goes sour on the counter. If I or a backyard grower want to pick an avocado and eat it ourselves that's perfectly fine although if you don't adhere to the schedule the fruit would be inedible. The schedule actually tells us when the fruit is ready...as does the size.
@@SleepyLizard oh? Wow! Ok! Wrong idea R US lol - thank you for setting me straight! In that case, I'm super glad it's there! Nice to know! 💖🥑
@@KerriEverlasting Nah, that's why we make the vids and answer your questions. Also you're not the first to interpret it as a sort of restriction. I actually explained it more when we recorded today but the vid was already too long so that wound up on the cutting room floor as they say.
There is NO WAY I would let the GOVERNMENT tell me when to pick fruit!
Even if the advice is GOOD,
AND
EVEN IF I follow their ADVICE...
I STILL reserve the RIGHT to pick fruit any way I want to!
It's not regulatory it's scientific. In other words, they test the fruit and the schedule tells us when it's ready. we have many different varieties that ripen at different times of year. without the schedule consumers would be getting fruit in June that will never ripen because it needs to be on the tree until August.
This ain't a "don't tread on me" thing. I'm free to pick and eat whatever I want anytime I want but none of us want to be sending September fruit to market in June. 😂
@@SleepyLizard I'd rather consult people who know from real time experience than the USDA, but then I'm pretty much a confederate...
But I definitely would want to know all there is to know about the fruit before any of my trees ever come to that point...
I have 2 [relatively] large fruited trees, and the rest are common HAAS...
My mother likes the strong flavored haas, but I prefer the milder large fruits [no idea what the name of the cultivar is].
I like them large and mild.
@@hunnybunnysheavymetalmusic6542 The experts are the ones who put the schedule together. it comes from the growers association which is the farmers ourselves. If you go by their schedule you can't go wrong.
The milder large fruits you like are not a particular cultivar per se....theres like 60 or so that are the large green skinned varieties we grow here in florida and each has it's own flavor, texture, and other qualities. there's a lot of variety
@@SleepyLizard Fair enough.
