Thank you, Nina. This video goes straight point to the point in an easy-to-understand way, without too much theory. I recently watched a Zoom class recording on UA-cam by TantaTinta. It's a South American production, which is okay for me because I speak Spanish. However, the theory can be quite complex, because it's based on what students would study at an art school. I was amazed at the multiple facets of good composition and how to look for it in paintings as well as to try and incorporate it into my own efforts as relatively new hobby painter.
I will definitely practise focusing on these points in my next paintings. I prefer landscapes, but I also like Urban Sketching style too. I understand and use some of these concepts, but not all of them. I often get distracted during a painting, as I mostly paint from imagination, so I don't have a reference photo. I tend to go with the flow, which I enjoy, but the results are bit hit and miss.
PS. Ian Roberts is an artist I regularly watch on UA-cam. Although his examples are oil paintings, his main approach is all about mastering composition. As relative beginners, as you rightly say, we often fall into the trap of just loading the brush and painting shapes and marks in a haphazard fashion. Watercolour is not a very forgiving medium, so we soon end up overworking the painting and ruining it to some degree. Obviously, it's all part of the learning process, but there must be a more efficient and effective way to learn and improve with watercolour.

I'll have to check him out. You are right most of the theory is the same for oils and watercolor, should be definitely very useful. Painting from imagination is great, it's much easier to simplify as you don't have the reality with all it's complexity...great fun!

So much useful information, straight to the point. I like your new camera set up and setting. Your new hair and make-up enhances your natural beauty, but what I appreciate is the talent you have and information.

Hi Nina, this is an excellent video, it's given me a lot to think about and digest. I'll be watching it again, many times. In the chapter on composition, you show a page with a painting by Edgar Degas explaining about left and right rabatment. Was this from a book? If so, what is the title of the book please? I would be interested in reading it. I only discovered your UA-cam channel a couple of days ago and I love it. The videos I've watched so far have been very helpful, and I will be steadily working through ALL of them !! Thank you for your brilliant channel. Kind regards, Evelyn
