NOT boring at all! I really enjoy having people go through art books and discuss the paintings and demos.

The book is NOT by Rowland Hilder, but contains some of his work and he writes the introduction. I have an extensive library of books that were written by Rowland, two of which are intructional: Starting With Watercolour and Painting Landscapes in Watercolour. Rowland Hilder's England and Rowland Hilder Country are even more inspiring, purely for containing so many wonderful examples of his art. I look at them all the time for inspiration in my own work.

Thanks for sharing this book! I hadn’t heard of Roland before but his work is beautiful. His skies are amazing! He definitely didn’t treat them as an afterthought but as essential parts of his compositions. Very neat to hear you talk about the importance of this book in your early days!!

Your emotional response to this book is exactly as I felt when I discovered David Curtis and I believe it is all about light. I used to watch old VHS videos and marvel at the seeming simplicity of his techniques. A lot of the paintings in this book remind me of David Bellamy, whose book ‘ the Watercolour Landscape Course’ was the beginning of my watercolour journey. Sadly, life got in the way for decades and I am now going back to basics, so much available (and for free) today and I’m grateful for your help and inspiration. Thank you.

Hi I just wanted to say thank you for recommending this book. I’m new to watercolour and had purchased a few books but was underwhelmed. Then I saw this video and parted with $11 on eBay - brilliant book with such clear guidelines. So many books waste 20 pages on supplies but completely omit explaining the difference in paint consistency and water control.

Thank you so much for bringing me back to this book. The Rowland Hilder in the title must have got me to your video, which has been in my Watch Later list for ages. I finally watched it last night and recognised some of the pages, including the yellow green tree demo which I remember doing. So I checked it out on Amazon, and when I saw the cover I realised that I already owned it. I have a lot of drawing/painting books and have borrowed/requested lots more from my local library network, but I found it on my shelf this morning. So many more demonstrations in this great book that I have yet to do, from artists I have subsequently bought/borrowed books by. It is how I came across Philip Jamieson and tracked down a copy of his book from America. And I have subsequently bought Charles Reid's books, but needn't have bothered as the demos are in here :) I'm seeing this book through new eyes and it will keep me busy in the coming weeks. Thank you again, what a top book!

Thanks Patricia. I once saw a watercolour of Rowland Hilders hanging in a gallery in the UK a huge painting about 4ft x 3ft depicting old sailing ships, gallons from days gone by. The drawing and painting were remarkable. Sadly the painting was stolen a few weeks later not sure if they ever recovered it :(

While watching a tutorial online in watercolor with Geoffrey Kersy, he shared something he learned by Roland Hilder's book Starting to Watercolor or something like that. He stated that he loved Hilder's book and used it for reference for many years. I had to put him on pause to see if I could find the book [hope] and your channel came up with other suggestions. Naturally I chose your channel. I am just learning watercolor. I painted in oils for many years. I then went to colored pencil (not liking the time it took me to cleanup, particularly my brushes]. Naturally I had to learn a most important concept and that was going from white to dark wherein it was the opposite in oils or acrylic. I love landscape painting, most particularly late fall into winter. There is nothing more interesting than a tree without leaves. One then sees their true beauty. I will check your channel out.

I talk to the animals. Learning to paint is my luxury in life and is my vacation from the everyday work that never ends. I am a beginner and am glad to have found someone else who learns from books. I did the same after watching this and found an excellent used copy on Amazon. I must say the examples in the book are all consistently good.... a great recommendation. My copy is a 1992 reprint, hardback, Editor Angela Gair. I see some editions state she is the author. The paintings are by Rowland Hilder, Charles Reid, Richard Bolton, John Pike, Tom Hill, David Millard, Philip Jamison, John Blockley, Zoltan Szabo, William McNamara, E John Robinson, and maybe one or two I have missed but they are indeed all masters of watercolour and rarely do you see such a fine set of inspiring work in a single book. A fabulous book with practical discussion everywhere

What a well loved special book, many of the paintings in the book could be on the market today. I guess you could say they have a timeless quality. At the end you did show water crashing on the rocks, which does look very similar work. The early 80s we lived in Tulsa, OK. It was a time before cell phones etc and books were very important. I went to several sites and all were fairly expensive for me from £25 to £95.

Coincidence Patrick, hope this doesn't sound too trite. But I had a treasure of painting information, the pictures were the same as in your book, they started me off on my long and happy journey. This contained the pictures of Rowland Hilder, Charles Reade and Zoltan Szabo. Various examples, from this book, that were shown in a free give away monthly series called I think, Painting and Drawing, that came with, again I'm not sure.... Australian Artist magazine? You even could get red binders with gold lettering to put your collections in, as they accrued. Got me going, still painting, but alas, I don't have my collection of these anymore. Came across, a student artist, who showed promise and was keen, but needed to learn basics... so I gave him, my treasure, to start him on his way too.
Amazing, I also did the Forest Road demonstration, among others and yes, it also had a remarkable affect on my painting. So much so, I still have it hanging in a corner, as a reminder, my very first framed watercolour.
Fortunately now we have Patricks great videos and now he's just taken us down memory lane with his Rowland Hilder book... though.... I might try and get a copy... great reference stuff and great pictures. Thanks Patrick mate, lovely video.

Sorry for the late reply Fred. It was so interesting reading your short story. What a lovely thing to do pass down the same material that inspired you to paint. I don't know the magazine but you obviously loved your copies and looked after them just as well you did! Thanks for the positive comment regarding my videos i am pleased they are of use to others. All the best and happy painting!

@@jayneyharmony I had the same problem! There is a link to the book below the video. But, the confusion is because the book is NOT written by Rowland Hilder. It's written by Angela Gair. It has a section on Rowland Hilder. It's still a good book. I also bought some other books written by Rowland Hilder which are good and go into more detail.

I have recently purchased the book “Successful Watercolour Painting” ISBN 0-00-412129-5
Published by HarperCollins with Angela Gair the Editor
I went to several sites and all were fairly expensive for me from £25 to £95.
I wasn’t put off and after further searching I eventually found one for £5.40 (UK shipping cost zero)
I received it today it was in very good condition and it is exactly the same as Patrick Ley Greaves showed us in the video above
My searches using Rowland Hilder as the writer did not give me what I wanted. He wrote the Introduction.
I was much more successful with searches using Angela Gair

I think what may be throwing people is that the book is by Angela Gair, not Rowland Hilder :) Its available on US and UK Amazon as well as ABE books. All the prices are reasonable. Its published by Harper Collins and the ISBNs are: ISBN 10: 0004121295 ISBN 13: 9780004121291. I just picked up a copy on ABE books for $17 AUD shipped to Western Australia or about ten quid :)

hey patrick, i’m italian and I’m not sure about the book’s origin in Amazon Italy. In your link I’ve not seen any photo of this book, and if I Search in my Amazon “Successful Watecolor Painting Angela Gair” there’s a book without any photo too. (so I don’t know if they’re the same books). This book is expensive for me (from €100 to €300) and, how I’ve told you, I’m not sure about this. Yes, I also know that the book’s language is english, but I want to translate everything if this is necessary. I hope you’ll apologize me for the bad english, but I really like ALL of your art style, and if you’ve taken ideas from this book I have to buy it.

i love books. Doesn’t matter what kind. They represent one of man’s achievements separating him from the animals so I don’t mean to offend by my comment although it might. Please turn pages of a book from the top right corner of a page. Anywhere else risks unnecessary damage.
