Thanks. After all these years - decades, really - I get to understand what they’re singing. All I could do before was pick up words and phrases here in there.
There's a video on youtube somewhere that explains how Kevin Rowland took different influences from different pop tunes of that era and gave it Celtic feel and it really works. This is a big son in our family, we have a 90 year old mother in law named Eileen and she'll get up and shake those replacement knees whenever we have a family get together. God Bless Her
Is anyone else here because they couldn't understand a single word spoken throughout the song... and still finding the same issue despite seeing the lyrics?
Come on Eileen Poor old Johnny Ray Sounded sad upon the radio Moved a million hearts in mono Our mothers cried Sang along, who'd blame them? You're grown (you're grown up) So grown (so grown up) Now I must say more than ever (Come on Eileen) Toora loora toora loo rye ay And we can sing just like our fathers Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means At this moment, you mean everything You in that dress, my thoughts I confess Verge on dirty, ah, come on Eileen Come on Eileen These people round here Wear beatdown eyes sunk in smoke dried face So resigned to what their fate is But not us (no never) No not us (no never) We are far too young and clever Toora loora, toora loo rye ay Eileen, I'll hum this tune forever Come on Eileen, oh I swear (what he means) Ah come on let's, take off everything Pretty red dress, Eileen, tell him yes Ah come on let's, ah, come on Eileen That pretty red dress, Eileen, tell him yes Ah, come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay Now you have grown, and now you have shown Oh, Eileen Said Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay Now I must say more than ever Things round here change I said, toora loora, toora loo rye ay Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means At this moment, you mean everything You in that dress, my thoughts I confess Verge on dirty, ah come on Eileen Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means At this moment, you mean everything In that dress, oh my thoughts, I confess Well, they're dirty, come on Eileen Come on Eileen
I went to a wedding last night...They played "Twist", I did the twist. When they played "Jump", of course I jumped. When they played "Come on Eileen", well, I ended up getting arrested.
I heard this on the radio at work and there's 2 things I immediately thought. 1. The singer sounds like Ed from Ed Edd n Eddy 2. at 1:18 - 1:28 I heard the lyrics as "Oh I stepped on a bee, Somehow I stepped on a bee"\ listening where I can actually hear the song more clearly now I can hear the actual lyrics.
About Come on Eileen "Come On Eileen" is a song by English group Dexys Midnight Runners (credited to Dexys Midnight Runners and the Emerald Express), released in the United Kingdom on 25 June 1982 as a single from their album Too-Rye-Ay.🎸🥁🎶❤️
I actually looked for this song for a couple months and discover I had it in my playlist but the one I had was banned from this country for some reason he he weird
In 1st grade I had trouble with everything I would always be the last to finish and my teacher played this and made me finish she was so nice know I am in 5th grade and in the honor society I appreciate her
I am, well to be politically correct let me say on the spectrum and this song lyrics confirm that I was right about the lyrics for years. Hence my mother smacking the crap outa me when I sang along in the car.
It’s an awesome song, one of the best of the 80s. But I’ll never understand why a guy singing about his longing for a girl named Eileen starts off by talking about Johnny Ray? I mean I realize it’s a whimsical quirky lyrical composition but still why the dialogue about Johnny Ray? That’d be like the song Rosanna by Toto starting off by going “poor old Fats Domino!” It doesn’t make any damn sense.
It's the next line that explains. Johnny R's music got to the previous generation's ladies, so the guys imitated his style. Now, the singer is trying the same tactic. As in, "we'll sing just like our fathers". He's hoping to score by tugging at her heartstrings
One of the best songs ever written. Both tune and lyrics are just pure genius!
Bro it’s literally just a dude begging for cooch
Really? Don’t get out much huh? Lol

This is such a banger! You can't help but want to dance and sing when this song comes on 😃
I was at a disco, they played the twist, I did the twist, they played jump, I jumped, they played this, I got thrown out for that one...

Yes.. that big verse...nope
I thought it was “come on Eileen, I smell like a beef”
Yup lmao
Ya lol
I’m going to hum this tune forever.
Come on Eileen
Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
Moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried
Sang along, who'd blame them?
You're grown (you're grown up)
So grown (so grown up)
Now I must say more than ever
(Come on Eileen)
Toora loora toora loo rye ay
And we can sing just like our fathers
Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty, ah, come on Eileen
Come on Eileen
These people round here
Wear beatdown eyes sunk in smoke dried face
So resigned to what their fate is
But not us (no never)
No not us (no never)
We are far too young and clever
Toora loora, toora loo rye ay
Eileen, I'll hum this tune forever
Come on Eileen, oh I swear (what he means)
Ah come on let's, take off everything
Pretty red dress, Eileen, tell him yes
Ah come on let's, ah, come on Eileen
That pretty red dress, Eileen, tell him yes
Ah, come on let's, ah come on Eileen, please
Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay
Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay
Now you have grown, and now you have shown
Oh, Eileen
Said
Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay
Come on Eileen, too loo rye ay
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here change
I said, toora loora, toora loo rye ay
Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty, ah come on Eileen
Come on Eileen, oh I swear what he means
At this moment, you mean everything
In that dress, oh my thoughts, I confess
Well, they're dirty, come on Eileen
Come on Eileen
Nice

I loved listening to this song so much In Namco 50th anniversary when I was young. Now I’m about to finish 12th grade. Where have the years gone?

I came back to this song because of a rewatch of Ash vs the Evil Dead, Whole show is slammed with bangers.
I’m surprised this song isn’t considered offensive yet! Lol
