Thanks for posting this. Gojira is still one of my favorite movies and while some of the other Godzilla movies were a bit campy, they were enjoyable for their time. It was interesting to learn different aspects as to how the series came into being.
Seeing the GINO crew saying how their film is just as the originals and that the japanese would have redesinged Godzilla if they would have been in their place, made it really hard to me to pull my middlefinger from the screen when there was a scene involving that bloody bunch.
TIM CASE No, It was shit and you have shit taste. But according to you anything is okay as long as its a fictional character. Superman could be a paraplegic pokemon made of shit and people should accept it because they're being picky over a fictional character.
"How can you have a Godzilla film that doesn't require you to dream" Hit the nail on the head there, while I initially liked the '98 Godzilla film when I was younger I have realized after having watched the originals that the suit ones were so much better.
I kind of like Tatapolous, he was honored that Zilla got to appear in the Toho universe, even if it got its butt kicked. Seriously the least of Zilla's problems was its design.
"How can you not have a Godzilla that requires you to dream?" Spot on! To hell with CG Godzilla, long live the guy in a rubber suit. Though sadly this will not be the case in the 2012 film.
Don't worry, dude. The newest poster has the image of helicopters chasing Godzilla. We can only see his tail, but the image of his tail alone is enough to tell you THIS is the remake we were promised back in 1994, when Toho announced the first remake. We were ALL screwed in '98 by what could've easily been differently titled, and been a Syfy Channel "Original." It's about time someone finally did something to make up for that tragedy. Check Legendary's website for the poster mentioned above.
I'm in the same boat as about half of these comments in regards to the '98 film. The monster's design is awesome, and the general plot was fine. If it had just been its own monster movie, it probably wouldn't have been as poorly received.
I agree that the American Godzilla was more Jurassic Park then the Japanese version. I especially hated the part where there were all the baby Godzillas running around Shea Stadium like velociraptors. That was a serious drawback. The main strength of the American Godzilla were the effects showing his attacks from the ground up which was something a rubber suited man marching through cardboard miniatures could never show. Thanks for posting this. I found it very interesting.
Fair point. Gino feels more like an over the top T-Rex to me, which is cool in its own way. The movie is more a remake of 'Beast From 20,000 Phathoms' anyway. I still love Ghidogoji. Everything about that suit had a weight to it (as well as looking suitably rubbery). There's a website somewhere where a guy did a mock study to see which design is more feasible. I think he concluded that old Godzilla made more sense in size, because his legs and those huge feet were large enough take the weight!
The original with Raymond Burr was great. So was 1998 with Matthew Broderick. Different film techniques, but still quite good. I like how the 1998 brings some new science knowledge about the shape of dinosaurs into developing the monster.
Other than the original first film, I don't recall Godzilla holding a train in his mouth. In Godzilla 1985 he held a passenger train in his hands, but not his mouth. However in Godzilla 2000 he held a boat in his mouth. Perhaps that's what you're thinking of. I got many of my Godzilla films from Amazon. Most of them are finally released on DVD in the states now. But before that I relied on random internet sites who burned the films on DVD
Finally someone who stays true to the original, that movie is a disgrace and must never even be considered a godzilla film. However I am looking forward to the new one in 2014.
Yeah, I saw that poster with his huge tail and the helicopters flying around it. It looks great! We will finally get the Godzilla film for Western audiences that we've been waiting for. Now we just need a good trailer to hype things up a little.
Thanks. I googled "godzilla with train in mouth" and the photo I mentioned shows up. It's been around for years. I now realize that this may have likely been a publicity photo and not a scene from any of the movies as the photo's background looks like it was added in. Just google it; see what you think. Thank you for the tip on Amazon.
It's because they changed it too much. Godzilla was really suppose to be a depiction of nuclear destruction and they didn't emphasize that. They made "Zilla" as they call him, too weak. Missiles, bombs, shells, machine guns, nothing could stop him. In the 1998 film, he was killed by missiles, yet in the film the Apache pilot said on quote: "Can't lock-on, he's colder than the buildings themselves." Yet those jets locked onto him when he got stuck in the Brooklyn Bridge. -_-
In all the documentaries I've seen, not one of them mention that Tri-Star also used a man in the suit as well as CGI. BUT.... The suit actor didn't get as much screen time as the CGI Gojira. Are they afraid to admit that the rubber suit method was used ?
Excellent question. In my opinion (meaning that this is not official), in my opinion, I would say the most popular Godzilla films are "King Kong vs. Godzilla", "Mothra vs. Godzilla" (1964) and probably "Godzilla vs. Mecha-Godzilla." This is solely my opinion though. But I believe "King Kong vs. Godzilla" has the highest grossing box office numbers as well.
Did you ever imagine that you would see Godzilla RUNNING from a couple of Apache helicopters or destroyed by a couple of missiles? A COUPLE OF MISSILES?!?!? I think that's what pissed me off more than anything in the '98 film. Ya gotta stick to what makes Godzilla GODZILLA! He's just about indestructible. He has atomic breath, that distinctive, awesome roar & some bad ass theme music (BA-da-da-DUM) that sends chills down your spine & lets you know SOMEBODY'S 'bout to take an ass whippin.
@ajplimpton I think thats where a rumour emerged that Godzilla 2000 was made as if Toho was saying 'THIS is how you make a Godzilla Movie'. It was sort of like getting back at the US version. Not to mention the scene from Final Wars where Zilla aka GINO gets taken out by Godzilla so easily.
Well, this part is unnecessary. So cute how they include a lengthy segment on "Zilla" as though it were a good thing and a worthy addition to the franchise.
I'm actually feeling positive about the new Godzilla movie. Gareth Edwards is a fan of Godzilla. He has made a couple of video messages to the fans. Also, he said he watch all of the Godzilla films as references before filming this new Godzilla 2014. And to answer your question, yes, Godzilla will be CGI. I fine with it as long as they portray Godzilla as massive & heavy. PACIFIC RIM did a good job of this so I have hope for Godzilla 2014
Wait the designer's name is Tatopolous? Isn't the protagonist in the American Godzila Nick Tatopolous or something? Godzilla's death is such a tragic scene...
It was "realistic" but fans wanted the godzilla they grew up with, with updated special fx, of course. Look at 8:07-8:24 where Nakajima (who played godzilla) basically stated that the 98 "zilla" was more comparable to jurassic park. But most of us got our wish when TOHO produced a series of godzilla flicks where he had an improved look but still, basically, looked like the original.
Theres a reason Toho renamed Emmerich's design of the creature to Zilla. Because Godzilla is an icon and the 1998 american film tarnished his reputation....its comparative to the Masked rider series and Kamen Rider. The 2014 film is our Kamen Rider Dragon Knight for Godzilla.
Cool! Quick question: Which movie is it where Godzilla has a passenger train in his mouth? Not the original movie where he picks up one railcar with his mouth and drops it but I often see a photo where he has a string of passenger rail cars. I don't recall ever seeing that movie. Also, what is a decent source to buy godzilla movies? I'm looking for the all out attack movie.
i speak for the rest of us americans that we wanted the godzilla that toho made but emmerich and devlin didn't deliver. thankfully legendary pictures is making one that will (hopefully) stay true to the original.
@Strife1969 I agree, the monster was a good design and the story was good. The monster just wasn't Godzilla, give him a different name and chances are the ratings would have been better. Not by a lot, but enough to get a fan base and a possible sequel.
i forgot which movie but the millennium movies had a briefing and talked about Godzilla in newyork and the cadets in the briefing said "Yea the Americans called it Godzilla but the scientist here say it wasent"
I'd have to agree that Zilla is by no means Godzilla. See Final Wars, lol. I'd be the first to point that out as the '54 original is my all time favorite movie. However, I still think that the '98 version is still a solid B-grade creature-feature. I have fond memories as a 5 year old geek-to-be going to the movies to see '98 Godzilla.
00:13 "Traditional methods with modern technology" SO much better than overused CGI in my opinion. Sure, you can have movies like Avatar, but a real physical object gives so much more to the imagination just like the guy at 7:30 said. Shit like the Star Wars remake trilogy just makes the viewer think he's watching a video game.
The Japanese guys had a point: if the FX are too good, it leaves nothing to the imagination. Steven Spielberg figured this out when he made "Jaws" (arguably the best monster movie ever made). He realized that his clunky, defective, mechanical shark was too fake; so he decided to keep the shark hidden as long as possible, and only hint at its presence. Spielberg said, "I had to be less like Harryhausen and more like Hitchcock."
I think it's hilarious the Japanese knew even then (when G '98 came out) it sucked. You can tell just by their comments they were bewildered like "why the hell would you do this?"
I'm with ya on that bro. He's an icon of what nuclear power does and what ignorant humanity can create without them realizing it until its too late. He's a huge icon of humanity's stupidity and ignorance, which brings his wrath upon the world.
WHY THE HELL DID YOU KILL HIM, TOHO?! And why in the holy mother of Mothra did they have the 1998 Godzilla film?! That wasn't even a Godzilla film! That was an INSULT to Godzilla!

Saddest thing is my daughter's friend came over stating the only Godzilla her & her brothers saw was the 98 version? thinking that imposture was him...I was heart broken & showed her my DVD's of the real Toho's monster!

Godzilla doesn't look much itself in Amrican film, even if they did some similiarites. They can't do it that easily. But the movie is little decent, but it would be better.
same with me, but people i know who have seen the 1998 version thinks it's better than the Japanese Godzilla, however i am the only one who has watched the original Godzilla.
Roland Emmerich is a fucking bastard for what he did to Godzilla! His movie was an utter slap in the face to the character, they slapped the name Godzilla on it to make money.
Pushing the obvious "Tri-star godzilla sucked" I do think that toho did make a solid point regarding the monster. Godzilla "or Zilla" isn't the international icon of godzilla he is the American representation of godzilla. He is the most powerful american Kaiju at this point and after his death his son zilla jr went on in the cartoons to become even more so powerful to the point that I could say it would hold its ground against Japans godzilla. tl;dr: movie sucked but the monster itself is great.
When Emmerich showed up, I shouted "What the H-E-L-L do you think you're doing here?!"
Thanks for posting this. Gojira is still one of my favorite movies and while some of the other Godzilla movies were a bit campy, they were enjoyable for their time. It was interesting to learn different aspects as to how the series came into being.
in 1998 "they did'nt want to blow up an iguana" yet they did!

"I don't want to take an iguana and blow it up to 250 feet tall."
And yet that's exactly what he did.
Dean Devlin: "We wanted the movie to introduce audiences to Godzilla." .... and then kill it off. Nice on Dean, nice one!
the new one is looking much better then the 90s movie, more upright like godzilla should be .
FUCK THAT. 98 ONE IS THE BEST FUCK U CUNTS WHO GET PICKY OVER A FICTIONAL CHARACTER.
TIM CASE No, It was shit and you have shit taste.
But according to you anything is okay as long as its a fictional character. Superman could be a paraplegic pokemon made of shit and people should accept it because they're being picky over a fictional character.

They didn't want Godzilla to be a blown up version of an iguana...they must not have watched the final film because that's sure what they made.
The new one looks good. Can't wait for it.
I really liked Godzilla 1998! Really cool creature and characters!
eso ni siquiera merece llamarse godzilla, esa cosa solo es una simple iguana mutante
Me Too!~as well as originals :) but 98' and original black n white just rule!!Godzilla You are King of the Monsters!!!
"How can you not have a Godzilla that requires you to dream?" Spot on! To hell with CG Godzilla, long live the guy in a rubber suit. Though sadly this will not be the case in the 2012 film.

yea better then clover field
+LuigiGodzillaGirl It really could have passed as almost a remake of Beast from 20,000 fathoms. Had it had radioactive blood, it would have been it.
I love how the Japanese talking heads are trying very politely not to say that the American Godzilla sucks.
I agree that the American Godzilla was more Jurassic Park then the Japanese version. I especially hated the part where there were all the baby Godzillas running around Shea Stadium like velociraptors. That was a serious drawback. It's funny that that guy said we could even have our own British Godzilla, and now, over a decade later, a Brit is directing the next Godzilla movie.
i grew up the american version that came out about 1998 now icant stop
watching the series
the concept art for the 98 film is still cool

The worst part was, why did they need all the fake rain? That was really annoying.
This doc was made in 1998 so it's not like they could have known it would be bad.
I'm actually feeling positive about the new Godzilla movie. Gareth Edwards is a fan of Godzilla. He has made a couple of video messages to the fans. LOL, the E.T. games from Atari. I had that first one. I didn't know they made more.
Wait the designer's name is Tatopolous? Isn't the protagonist in the American Godzila Nick Tatopolous or something?
Godzilla's death is such a tragic scene...
if there are national godzillas then we really need a refund on ours.
Refund accepted.
christhefishhunter More like a delayed merchandise exchanged, lol. We have a good one now.

then as a dedicated fan of Godzilla may I ask which is by far the most popular (or greatest Godzilla film ever) aside from the first
i speak for the rest of us americans that we wanted the godzilla that toho made but emmerich and devlin didn't deliver. thankfully legendary pictures is making one that will (hopefully) stay true to the original.

It's funny to hear the Toho ppl have doubts about the american 1998 Godzilla before it came out.
I'd have to agree that Zilla is by no means Godzilla. See Final Wars, lol. I'd be the first to point that out as the '54 original is my all time favorite movie. @CrazyCannibalClown:
Gareth Edwards is in pre-production right now.
Godzilla 98 would have been a good kaiju movie,if they had taken out all references to Godzilla and called it something else.
3:55 No where you differed in the 98 film was not the creature design... It was the fact you tried to make it into Jurassic Park in the finale! >.
@obhboy10 Zilla fails, if you've seen Godzilla: Final Wars. Godzilla demolishes Zilla in one atomic breath.
The Japanese guys had a point: if the FX are too good, it leaves nothing to the imagination. Steven Spielberg figured this out when he made "Jaws" (arguably the best monster movie ever made). I agree wit you 100%. Thanks yo.
Hope the comic con trailer gets uploaded.
I think it's hilarious the Japanese knew even then (when G '98 came out) it sucked. You can tell just by their comments they were bewildered like "why the hell would you do this?"
And then we fast forward to 2004 with Final Wars and Zilla not lasting even 1 minute with the real Godzilla.
How do you about the new movie coming, but Godzilla in CGI? (Not like Zilla'98 in appearance)
I'm with ya on that bro. He's an icon of what nuclear power does and what ignorant humanity can create without them realizing it until its too late. He's a huge icon of humanity's stupidity and ignorance, which brings his wrath upon the world.
I'd love to see a British Godzilla...oh wait...we have GORGO!
Why not put it on public domain? PS does Godzilla qualifiy as a dragon
No, it's a muted dinosaur.
Roland Emmerich how dare you show your face in something godzilla related! I really hope Legendary pictures puts him in his place!
@MarkArandjus Yes it is.
WHY THE HELL DID YOU KILL HIM, TOHO?!
And why in the holy mother of Mothra did they have the 1998 Godzilla film?! That wasn't even a Godzilla film! That was an INSULT to Godzilla!
But if it weren't for the movie, then we wouldn't have the cartoon series, right?
I was brought up in the 90s so the '98 Godzilla movie was how I was introduced, so for that I am thankful for however looking back at it being a fan of the series I can see why it was an insult to the franchise.
well lets just hope that the 2014 Godzilla will be the sorry that the 1998 was ever created and have the nerve to call it Godzilla.
hey my freind now legendary pictures is making godzilla so will you see that one
well if we want the best film in the world we should wait till 2014 because time matters more than anything
I own all Godzilla films. The original "Gojira" all the up to "Gojira: Final Wars." The 1998 iguana sci-flick is not included in my collection. It would be like sticking a wine-cooler in with real authentic wine. It just doesn't work.
They done that movie already!
But even then the "Beast of 2000 Fathoms" would have been more acceptable then the King's name?
Public walked out of theaters everywhere demanding their money back saying That's not Godzilla...
Saddest thing is my daughter's friend came over stating the only Godzilla her & her brothers saw was the 98 version? thinking that imposture was him...I was heart broken & showed her my DVD's of the real Toho's monster!
By God, did he seriously predict a British director directing the next Godzilla film? 9 years in advance????? :OOOO
They could still try and officially rename it to "zilla" or something, doubt anyone would object.
Now, I'm going to disagree with you on that. They did depict 1998 Godzilla/Zilla to be more easily maneuverable and more fleet-footed in comparison to the Japanese Godzilla. I'm not trying to diss on both of them, because I liked Godzilla the Series (Cartoon series of the 1998 film) and the Japanese Godzilla is sheer destruction on its end. I mean, yeah, the Zilla the Series wasn't great, but it was pretty good.
Del Toro doing a Gundam 'movie'? ...I think I'd pay to see that.
@godzillaisnuclea123 Yeah, you can't change what has happened.
1998 G was a disgrace !
3:55 - " i think where we differ from the original movie is..." should continue "...we suck."
1:21 Is that Japan's Capitol?
Don't care for cloverfield at all but Kong vs Godzilla would be epic!
amen
1:10 You know people will cheer for you when you trash a tax/government related building.
I will admit that the '98 Godzilla in no way can stand up to the original. Hell, it looks like shit compared to the trailers of the new one (super fucking hyped, by the way). But I still love it. Hell, I wouldn't even say it's a guilty pleasure. I genuinely LOVE that film.
it should have been called The Beast From 20,000 Fathems
No not as far as I know?
Godzilla doesn't look much itself in Amrican film, even if they did some similiarites. They can't do it that easily. But the movie is little decent, but it would be better.
Perfectly said, lol.
Someone needs to do a British Godzilla right now.
@egdeltur666 well, that is genuinely dissapointing. ive been such a long time fan too...
same with me, but people i know who have seen the 1998 version thinks it's better than the Japanese Godzilla, however i am the only one who has watched the original Godzilla.
Roland Emmerich is a fucking bastard for what he did to Godzilla! His movie was an utter slap in the face to the character, they slapped the name Godzilla on it to make money.
WHY DID THEY HAD 2 MAKE GINOSAURUSREX
I'd love a British Godzilla!!!!
I honestly think "Zilla" was a pretty good Kaiju film, it was just obviously the name "Godzilla" didn't fit very snug...
lol wine cooler best analogy ever
Pushing the obvious "Tri-star godzilla sucked" I do think that toho did make a solid point regarding the monster. Godzilla "or Zilla" isn't the international icon of godzilla he is the American representation of godzilla. He is the most powerful american Kaiju at this point and after his death his son zilla jr went on in the cartoons to become even more so powerful to the point that I could say it would hold its ground against Japans godzilla.
tl;dr: movie sucked but the monster itself is great.
Allometry for the win!
omg @ 0:15 mothra looks sooo cool i need 2 find rebirth of mothra 3 lol
