Monty Python and the Holy Grail - 1975
A comedic send-up of the grim circumstances of the Middle Ages as told through the story of King Arthur and framed by a modern-day murder investigation. When the mythical king of the Britons leads his knights on a quest for the Holy Grail, they face a wide array of horrors, including a persistent Black Knight, a three-headed giant, a cadre of shrubbery-challenged knights, the perilous Castle Anthrax, a killer rabbit, a house of virgins, and a handful of rude Frenchmen.

Also Jude was right that this movie didn’t have much of a budget
The original ending was supposed to have a giant fight which would have ended with a swallow dropping a coconut on the French guard’s head, but they couldn’t do that so they just went with the next best thing
Thats also the reason they act like riding horses instead of actually riding real horses
I believe it was something like $10,000 in money now, and almost all of that went just for cameras and locations
The reason we didn't get the original ending was because they ran out of money to do that.

Seeing Jude frown throughout this entire thing while Brendan is smiling and quoting all the lines is comedy gold

Average Monty Python movie experience
It never fails to amuse people when they learn this;
The reason they’re banging coconuts together to mimic the sound of horse galloping is because the budget couldn’t afford actual horses.
Another fact I learned recently was (if you look closely you can tell) King Arthur is the only one wearing actual chain mail armor, everyone else is wearing knitted wool that’s been painted silver.
My friend also told me that the director’s son was the one flattened by the cow in the French knight scene, and his son also had the model of Camelot for the song scene.
Best fact, they could afford a horse! One horse!
The knight who kills the Famous Historian rides on horseback, and is the only knight in the entire film to do so.
It's a slight myth. As the other comment stated, they could afford one horse. And in fact could afford enough horses, but when messing around with foley they realised just omitting the horses for the coconuts was far funnier, so they rolled with that, save for the one horse that was used in the killing of 'a Famous Historian'

The Trojan horse worked because the one guy who delivered it (supposedly) said it was a gift from Athena, they believed it because who would use a gods name for lies. But Athena was like "Sick tactics bro." and didn't smite them.

The Monster chasing Arthur and his cohorts is intense that Terry Gilliam suffered a fatal heart attack. That scene is the greatest fourth wall breaking at its peak.

This movie actually WAS filmed on-location in Scotland. Actually, the Pythons were only allowed to film at one castle, Doune Castle, so they had to film it from every possible angle imaginable to make it look like different castles.
So…you’re going to do Life of Brian next, right? It has some very UA-cam-unfriendly parts you’d have to cut out, but it’s just as hilarious and also has an actual plot.
personally I'd prefer "meaning of Life" next. but i think the entire ending would cause some issues with youtube as well

I once watched this movie with my grandfather, and when the cops showed up to arrest one of the knights after the bridge scene, he jokingly said “the holy grail is just inside the trunk of the police car”

I enjoyed the Life Of Brian, I found the idea of the two workers only pretending to be dumb funny.
Here's a fun little fact about The Black Knight. On his armor has a boar on, which are animals known to keep on fighting even if they are sustaining mortal wounds. I am fairly certain you can see the connection.
For context, the farmers are digging peat which is used for fuel in medieval times.

The entire ending bit with the constables coming in and arresting everyone was done because they legit ran out of money. Monty Python was when comedy peaked.

their budget was SO low for the film, they had to cut the final battle because they just had no way to afford it. they also thought ending it so abruptly was just generally funnier than whatever they had planned anyway.

My dad has always made references to this movie. When I was old enough, we watched it together. Now we both make references to this movie.

Fun fact: the reason they did the squire with coconuts instead of an actual horse is not because they originally intended for this joke to be in the movie, but because they ran out of money from all the explosives they bought, so they had to improvise. It’s one of the most hilarious and creative work arounds to budget issues I’ve ever seen
Honestly, Brennans' excitement for this movie made this 10x more enjoyable for me XD
he just laughs at both the movie and Jude's suffering.

11:45 Fun Fact: I watched this movie a couple years ago and the modular home that I live in needed a few repairs at the time. As soon as this scene came on, a window fell out of its place. It startled me, but I thought it was just the thuds in the movie.
My Grandma that I live with came home from errands, and saw the window and she was like: "What happened here?" And I was like... "Oh, THAT'S what that sound was! That happened while I watched a movie, and I thought that was just the movie!"

I remember last year when I watched this movie. My dad got it for my birthday, and I hadn't watched it yet after months. I was in the midst of a deep, 3 hour long existential crisis about death, so I played this movie to try and distract myself. I was laughing so hard even though I was still having that existential crisis. I don't think I've ever laughed at a movie *that* much before, even though I would start panicking every time someone died.
I feel like how the skits feel chaotic and random until you resd tge books of king arthur and rewatch it and can see how tgey were actually pretty clever in mocking the book

My dad introduced me to Monty Python when I was WAY too young, like 8 or 9. But after rewatching it as I got older I would understand more of the comedy that didn't hit on a previous watch, which is the best part imo. It has become my all time favorite movie, it really transcends the traditional comedy movie.
To Bren, I gotta ask: did you see Patsy's mouth slowly widen with discomfort at the dirt farmers lecturing king Arthur? It's stupid details like that that makes Monty Python so memorable.
