Quick fix for non-responsive touchpad electronic door lock due to heat (Weiser SmartCode)

  • This is a quick an dirty (more like sweaty... it was HOT!) video that I wanted to throw up on the interwebs in case other people have this frustrating problem.
Basically, when it's hot out and especially when sunlight is hitting the touchscreen of electronic door locks (that are becoming very popular for good reason), they either don't' work well or don't' work at all.
This quick solution using the palm of your hand to sap up the heat before you use your finger to tap your entry code in works for me every time this happens due to extreme heat.
    Hope this helps!

This seems to have worked with my kwikset touchpad e-lock. I'll be sharing this with my housemates. This was driving me nuts for a long time, thought I bought some sort of cheap piece of junk. Thanks so much!

No problem! I'm glad this is helping people because omg it's so annoying when you're stuck outside in the heat when the panel isn't responsive. Cheers!

@@BenDurham Oh yeah, btw, there actually is merit to your theory. There are two main ways of how capacitive touch-screens work: via heat detection or static electricity. Most smartphones use the latter; these locks likely use the former.

@@BillyAltDel bam! there we go! I mean most of the time they work - I'm sure there was a reason it's engineered this way. Maybe more robust or cheaper?

@@BenDurham i know electro static sensitives ones dont work well underwater, possibly they expected these doorlocks to experience rain.

This is MOST annoying problem. Yes the palm method works but it’s not the sun. Mine does it 100% of time. Winter, summer, spring, fall, day, or night. Highly highly irritating.
You sir, shared the only video I’ve seen on this. Thank you and keep them coming

I read the manual, it supposed to do that. You can illuminate the keypad two ways: 1. Palm the entire keypad then press check or lock (cant remember). 2. Triple finger double tap. I use the latter method.

    • @BenDurham
      @BenDurham  4 роки тому

Do those methods work for you in extreme heat?

Only had it for a week but many days over 30 and west facing door. So far both methods work perfectly.

THere should be a warning on these things that when it gets up in the 90's your experiance with these locks may suffer.

Weiser has that trick in their operational instructions...use palm or back of hand on touchpad to light up keys. Maybe they saw your quick fix :)

Oh really! Never had the manual because this was a rental unit so I never knew the model name either 😅

This video is seeing a spike in views (still only a few hundred) but it's interesting because it coincides with this heat wave hitting Toronto!

I have a 15-20yr old Weiser brand deadbolt with electronic keypad (with physical push buttons) and have all kinds of problems in " _extreme_ " temps. It's worthless around freezing temps, and today I had my first summer lockout in 92° (+) [about 33°C] heat.
Honestly, I think they shouldn't exist if they can't handle North American temps. This is frustrating as hell.

Sigh. Yeah, it's weird because you want a lock to... Ya know.... Let you into your own house in any temperature lol? Did this trick work or nah?

It's now freezing in Michigan and panel is black. Can only operate through phone. My kids don't have the app so they can't get in.
