I don't know why I find sparse devlogs so charming. Yours and Kiririn51's have been rythming my past 2 years. I guess it gives some rythm and a sense of progress to a life that can move even slower than the dev cycle of a game. Thanks for these snippets Tom.

I have sorely missed these dev vlogs. It's always nice to have a little fireside chat with Tom on game philosophy.
On a more title-specific note, thank you for letting us know TBW is still moving forward. It makes me nervous sometimes seeing it grow stale on my wishlist.

Necromedic as a debuffer definitely sounds like a good spin, and i'm excited about both the damage redirection and knockback boosters.
I'm hoping that from what you said about health being more of a resource that we're going to see more 'on hit' abilities come in, I think it would definitely suit Jen to allow herself to take a hit in order to get an extra shot off, or for Zan to put himself in a bad situation to get into a better timeline.
Also, I do really hope you guys give all the wizards a free Overwatch ability, or some other way of queuing a trigger for them. This game would benefit *so* much from being able to set up big rube-golbergian event chains between the wizards

Always great to hear the thought that goes into how and why something plays the way it does, thanks for those videos!
At the risk of throwing design ideas from an armchair - perhaps resurrection wants to be frontloaded, where you cast a buff on an ally while they're still alive, and if they then die before the start of the next turn, it revives them at the point where they received the buff?
It flips the experience from being an "oops, fix it" after-the-fact that you shouldn't need, to being more of an active "hey, this lets me bungee into that room and get out for free" planning tool, though at the cost of losing that "oh crap" fixing tool, and possibly significantly shifting the narrative theming...

the point about turn rewind is good: even into the breach with its top notch visualizations of actions' effects occasionally has some surprises where I had not correctly predicted the mechanics. Of course this only works in games where your actions do not reveal information (unlimited rewind wouldn't work in Invisible Inc).
Also notable that slice and dice, which you were recently playing on stream, has a really nice turn rewind mechanics which has often saved me from silly mistakes (oh, forgot this spiker will kill my character id I hit it...)

I decided to check up on the development of TBW, only to find out that a devlog was posted 3 days ago!

Glad to be getting updates, super excited for TBW!
First heard about you via your making a game in unity series and, while you're obviously currently very busy, I'd be really interested to see a video or short series once TBW has been released about both the techniques and strategies that went into developing a turn based strategy game, as well as the challenges and philosophies of designing one.
Keep up the good work, cant wait to play the finished product.

Sounds good, definitely more puzzley than xcom, but it's early days :D
You've made me realise how a small scale turn based xcom could support tenet style gameplay, something I might try out.

The mechanics of Tenet are something I have definitely thought would be cool in a strategy game, but it has similar complexity to anything involving time-travel. People going forwards interact with people going backwards, but you usually only control one direction at a time. You would need to go forwards, then have characters go backwards (see how it changes things) then go back to going forwards, then backwards, etc etc. If A shoots B, but C ends up shooting A first, does B die? How do you resolve the fact that all the actions A did are now gone, and thus others would react differently? Does the flow of time now change, so you're controlling B after they would've been shot? It's a whole lot to keep track of, AND explain to a player, and make intuitive and fun.

@@williamrutherford553 the missing bit of the tenet illusion is playing forward with your not-yet-played reverse clone already doing his thing, which is sadly impossibru. forgiving the initial boot up loop, it would look tenetish but we know the truth.

It sounds like the Necromedic would get a lot more use if there was an optional "no time rewind" mode. Such a mode would also make the game slide a bit more towards the Strategy side of the spectrum than it currently is. Would also be a good inbetween for the normal mode of gameplay and the obvious "hardcore/ironman" mode where there's no restarting at all

The explanation for the necromedic's ability amuses me, in that she can rewind time, but only once someone has died. Very weird magic logic going on there.

How long has this been in development? I remember TotalBiscuit mentioning it years like 8 years ago or something.

Careful with Death reversal. If you establish it as a mechanic this tightly linked to the game function, you lose the powerful (and often misused) narrative tool of a well timed death.

    • @paolomilanicomparetti3702

don't think this is applicable to this game, don't think there is character permadeath (would not work with puzzly design and a fixed set of characters)

    • @teecee1827
      @teecee1827 2 роки тому +1

@@paolomilanicomparetti3702 nah, I mean that if you establish that death is just a light inconvenience in gameplay that can be solved with a magic power without drawback, it deflates dramatic tension *outside* of gameplay. Like, if you kill a bad guy, what's gonna ensure he stays that way? The stakes are muddled.
