Calling Jordan Pickford world class is ludicrous
It is but I get where he's coming from. He's the starting goalkeeper in one of the top 10 maybe 5 countries in world football.

Whoa, the insult to Hargreaves at the end, the guy only broke into Munich at 20, two times CL winner, won the PL and CL double at Utd, 4 titles in Germany, and literally England player of the year in 2006. The guy is IMMENSE. Career also ended at 27, so he did pretty well in 7 years! 2 CL and 5 league titles.

What is with this obsession with the so called "golden generation" at the minute? These guys were for the most part dreadful in an England shirt, and got nowhere near as close to winning tournaments as Southgates men have. Some of their performances and behaviour was appalling, and the amount of excuses that get made for why they "didn't do as well as they should have" is infuriating. Its time we move on.

@@thierryhenry674 I think thats mainly because England tried to fit every best player in the squad and there was no cohesion or chemistry. Not to mention club rivalries divided the dressing room, Rooney and Gerrard hated each other because of Manchester United and Liverpool for example.

So, the way to do these is to pick the squad first, then the formation. You’d probably play 352 or 442 Diamond. 352: Kane Rooney; Cole Lampard/Bellingham Rice Gerrard Beckham/TAA; Ferdinand Stones/Campbell Terry at the back. 442D: Rooney Kane; Rice Gerrard Becks Bellingham/Lampard; Cole Ferdinand Terry Walker.
Since we’re talking about the England team from 04-06, Lampard deservedly finished runner up to Ronaldinho in the 2005 Ballon D’Or (in an era with many more world class players than we have nowadays). Jude can’t be in this team ahead of him.
They weren’t golden if they didn’t win anything. Greece 🇬🇷 2004 winner the euros in 2004 are a Golden generation.

England simply have never had a manager willing to make tough decisions. Sitting one or multiple of Beckham, Lampard, Gerrard, and Scholes was needed, yet Sven and Capello chose to play central midfielders on the wings instead of trusting players in natural positions and trusting deeper lying players like Owen Hargreaves or Michael Carrick. Squeezing 4 players of the same profile into one team was a recipe for failure, and they’re continuing to do it with Foden and Bellingham
Why do we continue to call this generation the golden generation? We did the same back then with the 2006 group. By doing this we put too much pressure on them. Just let them be them and play.
Ade Pickford is world class, 2 goals conceded in euro 2021 and most clean sheets in major tournaments for England

You can either compare both sides club performances or their England performances. Because Gerrard, Lampard and Scholes get in over Rice, Bellingham and Foden based on Club performances but not necessarily their England performances
Idk why Rory thinks they're going to "have all the ball anyway" with Gerrard, Lampard and Bellingham. Bro Jorginho (forget about Xavi) alone would dominate that midfield in terms of hogging the ball. For all their qualities, Lampard and Bellingham aren't that type.
Walker: considered average for a large part of his career
Neville: never considered average
Trent: considered the best fullback in the world for most his career
Neville was definitely considered average for large parts of the career. In the 90s everyone except United fans considered both Neville's donkeys who were lucky to play for United. It was only later than Gary started getting respected.

Michael Owen fell off a cliff around 2001 - 2002. To say he went to Real Madrid and 'scored loads of goals' is laughable. He scored 16 goals in 45 games for one of the best ever teams seen in this generation as a striker. That is not a good record at all.
From the bench
Yeah Owen is super overrated by people who either never saw him play or can barely remember it. The guy was very, very exciting as a young player but was past it by about 22. And even in his prime he never managed 20 league goals. That one amazing goal vs Argentina massively elevates his legacy beyond what he really achieved on a football pitch. Rooney has scored 50% more career goals than Owen and Rooney brought so much more than goals to the table unlike Owen.
Harder competition back then is all I’ll say, they would’ve won the games the current crop have won except maybe the keeper because David James was woaful for England

Paul Scholes is in ahead of Lampard for me, or Bellingham. He controls a game better than either Bellingham, Lampard or Gerrard do. Id either go as far to say that Carrick would sit in front of Scholes and Gerrard or Gerrard and Bellingham, thats the balance you need.

Neville mentioned it recently on the Overlap, Carrick (or Rice) should be on this team. Not because he is better than the others, far from it, but because of the balance it creates. For me, it's Carrick as a 6, Rice as an 8 and Gerrard as a 10 (but Bellingham/Lampard are fine shouts too).

What is happening to the standards in football in what world is Jordan Pickford world class. To be world class you have to be top 5 in your position. He’s not better than Allison, Ederson, Courtois, Ter Stegen, Maignan even Kobel. It’s almost disrespectful to compare him to these player when he plays for Everton. it's like you haven't remembered what the issue of the golden generation was - no holding mid and too many attacking threats. Beckham is wasted as a right sided attacker in a 4-3-3, he'd be best as a right wing back in a 5 at the back in 2024
Looking at this team, how about Gerrard at RW & Rice in CM to be the holding player?
The idea of getting Gerrard to hold just seems wrong, like Bryan Robson & Duncan Edwards before him he could cover every blade of grass.
He's too good to have shackles put on him, also at RW he can cut in while being like a more aggressive & better goal scoring version of Beckham.
Lampard at best makes the bench. All the midfielders will get in each others way. For me, you'd have to have Gerrard; scholes and rice/Carrick.

Perfectly balanced team with loads of pace, goalscorers, midfielder who can keep the ball and control the game and a rock solid defence
Could also swap Gerrard for Rooney and play Kane at 10 or play Lampard or Bellingham at 10.
Difficult to find a good LW and I didn’t want to shoe horn in someone out of position. Could put Joe Cole there but I wanted pace. Feel free to stick Gordon in there.

Glad some one did this, before seeing this I'd say 2006, but that team had another crowbaring in a player that unbalanced the team, namely Lampard. Him & Gerrard didn't and wouldn't work, Gerrard trumps Lanpard.

The only thing i would change is scholes for bellingham and walker for neville. Everyone says the prem is the best league in the world yet all the best players in it arent english. We onlu have 2 world class players and both play abroad. Kane in germany and bellingham at madrid thats it. Foden Saka Rice etc are great players but nowhere near world class. Not even in the top 5 in their position

What is international class? Pickford is fine. He's not the best keeper at the Euros but he's definitely good enough and better than what a lot of even the decent teams like Croatia/Holland can put out.

Terry, Cole and Pickford aren’t technical enough to play out from the back. Hargreaves is not silky enough on the ball. Gerrard is not tekky enough. Beckham is not tiki taka capable. Kane, Saka and Rooney can’t even do a simple stepover, they are so skilless.

The 'Golden Generation' is so overhyped and I am so bored of it as a man in his 30's. Bellingham is writing his own story yes, but he's better than Lampard. Beckham was hugely overrated, as was most of our other ex players. Probably only Cole, Terry and Rooney walk into the current team. Walker is better than Neville, Saka is more effective than Beckham (look at stats). Pickford is better than any ex England goalkeeper too.
Lampard would get 40 goals a season in that Bellingham role at real madrid lol. The guy scored 25 yard screamers on a regular basis
and could create and link up very well. Bellingham is a technical version of Paul Ince who gets on the end things with late runs into
the box. Both players are fantastic and have different attributes, but Bellingham is not better than Lampard or Gerrard or Beckham.
