Outback Detecting : Ghost Town Silver! (Day One).

- Please join us for the first of a multi-day series in a western ghost town which existed for just a short period of time in the 1870s. Colleen hits the leader board right out of the gate with a 'first' for NQ Explorers - an 1837 Silver Fourpence or 'Groat". Thanks for having a look at our video - a few issues may be evident (apart from my complete lack of detecting skills compared to Colleen's) - this was our first outing with the new GoPro Black fitted with a Rode Video Micro and dead cat. The site was quite windy and the audio would not have been possible without the dead cat, unfortunately you will see it in shot every now and then which will become increasingly annoying - since this outing we have fitted a stand-off bracket for the mic/dead cat which has fixed the problem. The Rode is also highly directional and we have since fixed the audio recordings in the field by repositioning the mic for different scenes. Rest assured we are now more competent with this camera and audio setup. And lastly despite all that George III/IV chat, the coins are actually William IV, no George to be seen - we’re just not used to finding coins as early as this! Cheers everyone. Warren.

What a great start in a potentially productive search area. Some really old English silvers. Especially like the 1837 Groat. It was an amazing find. A terrific spot for a few days camping and detecting. Really looking forward to your next video at this site. Thanks Warren and Colleen!

Colleen wiped the floor with you again warren. She certainly got some nice silver. That 1874 Sixpence should have a die number just above the date below the bow. I thought I could see 16 there. That is my olde eyes though. Good spot. I loved going out to those sort of places. But age does slow one down a lot.

What a wonderful Four Pence. I think you will find it is William IV (Gulielmus) 1830 - 1837. The places you and Colean research and explore are great, fantastic Aussie history, keep it coming.⛏

I'm not yet halfway in and you haven't mentioned the general area where you are. However, I know that many areas in Oz look similar to others, especially if you're in a similar zone, but this ground looks really familiar. I'll keep watching and see you mention where you are. My problem is I've traveled over a lot of ground from Brisbane to Lockhardt River, so sometimes country just blends. For example, this ground looks like an area just North of Rockhampton, an area near Townsville, an area on the Cape, and an area in the Central West around the Blackall/Barcaldine/Longreach/Aramac area.
Thanks for your comment Brad - yes the country from southwest Queensland to the tip of the Cape can just 'blend' exactly as you describe, and it extends well south into NSW too. Thoroughly enjoyed watching this video Warren. Great finds! I do have a question for you. At one point in the video, you identified a privy location for one of the old houses. Have you considered digging it out? No telling what is in it. Continued good luck to you both!
