There is nothing more demoralizing and soul crushing than new grad CS job search as someone who isn’t a freak of nature lol. Even video like these makes everything so depressing. It’s like I’m not meant to be so what even is the point of trying? Great video though, I appreciate the insight.

Content creation is mostly fake. Sure on the outside, she is doing well. But we don't know her life. We don't know if she's mentally struggling. I hope she's good but don't be so hard on yourself based off a social media video.

@@harryzhu Thank you for your comment. I did find a job (although not as prestigious as Netflix, etc.) but I think your mindset is how I ended up approaching things.

@@Arcvx Don’t be misled by social media. The "LeetCode hard that was fitted to the time constraint" was actually just a LC easy basic contains-duplicate solved with a hashmap. Like she mentioned, Netflix isn’t focused on whether you’re a LeetCode grinder like Facebook, but more on analyzing time complexity and conceptual questions like designing a hashmap.

There's this thing that I completely fucked up on the system design interview. My mind just blanked.

Very impressive! Curious, where do you find internships besides LinkedIn?

Sometimes people crowdsource it on a GitHub repo such as this one github.com/pittcsc/Summer2024-Internships

Lol, so she just did the regular work assigned and never did anything outside of class. Sounds like she's a very sub-par programmer just from her explaining her skills.
I'm not trying to be harsh here, but it sounds like she got a job because of other things, not because of her skills and experience. Plenty of students do these things outside of class that are very talented getting passed up unfortunately.

She might actually be a very good problem solver, so her abilities can't fully be shown on paper, i.e. she shone in the interview.

First thing that struck me in this vid was how confident and clear her speaking was. As someone who has interviewed developers a number of times I can attest to how impactful communication is.
It also seems like she did well on their programming tests and follow-up questions. I'd bet that her handling of the hash table implementation follow-up question put in a lot of work for her, which is pretty lucky.
Final, working as a TA for 5 months could actually be pretty massive depending on how that time was spent. Mentoring other students, for instance could be very valuable for both communication but also understanding of the course work.

Im a cmu alumni, and she ta my class. The cs program at cmu alone can put her leagues above candidates from other schools, and this is from multiple data points from big tech recruiters. She may an ordinary cs kid in the program but that program has a 5% acceptance rate and getting in was the easiest part of the program.
