  • Thunderbike Race bike Prep series, In this thirteenth video I check the timing of the camshafts on the engine of a series eligible Ducati 748 race bike
    Hi Everyone
In this video I check the timing of the camshafts on the engine following the build up of the engine to see whether any changes are needed
It is a two part video as you will find during the video as it runs on, I wont spoil the fun :)
Subsequent videos will move on to the frame and swingarm prep as we get closer to the bike build itself.
Enjoy and if you are interested in following the build please hit like and subscribe :)

I'm actually learning while being entertained through your videos. That's pretty rare especially on UA-cam! Thanks for doing these.

Thanks for all the info !!, I do have 2 questions......were can i buy the TDC tool you are using and which type oil are u using to put the engine together

    • @DesmoWerx
      @DesmoWerx  7 місяців тому

You can get a TDC tool from Kamna Ducati in Germany and the oil is a build oil Luca or Redline make a suitable product, then in the little oil pot I use a 10w40 to cover other parts to keep them lubricated.

Isn't TDC going over some degrees at the wheel and the piston is staying at TDC for a moment? So finding the spot where the dial gauge is just at its maximum measurement will only give the starting point of this moment?
While I'm here, your videos rock! :)

Yes it will go over a couple of degrees whilst at TDC and you are correct it is the starting point of this moment. The finding of the measurement gives a consistent 0 point to work from for the timing.
      Glad you like the videos

I'm watching this for a third time but it's like watching the construction of a NASA space shuttle. Do you have to check the timing every time you rebuild the engine?

    • @DesmoWerx

HI Gamotur, its good practice to check the timing, but I especially needed too as I was using parts from different engines so the settings were not made at factory for this engine. You can just use the standard timing marks to get you roughly into timing position, it may be a couple of degrees out but that will not cause major issues.

I had the same question - being a race engine with different parts, I figured there could be discrepancies in the parts from stock, however I thought being keyed, it would all go back perfectly timed - but I guess not. I learn here the difference between a pro race engine and a road one - I guess a degree could be a tenth on track and a win! Very cool.

hi there, not sure if you get to read this but I've been watching your thunderbuke build... I'm wanting to do my first bike engine build, I've got 25 years experience with car engines but not much with a bike engine. I've got my hands on some brand new 996sps engine casings and I was wondering that should I run into any difficulties would it be ok to get some advice from you? best regards Wayne.

Hello, where did you get your dial set up from? Are they Ducati brand tools?

      HI Raymond,
They are copies of the Ducati tools, I got the holders from Ducati Kamna in Germany.
