Mary Chapin Carpenter was born Feb. 21, 1958, in Princeton, N.J. Her father was an executive for Life magazine, and she spent part of her early life living in Japan. She grew up with a love of contemporary pop hits, although her mother's Woody Guthrie and Judy Collins records gave her some interest in country/folk music. She spent her time at home with her guitar, and her father encouraged her to perform at talent nights.
Enrolling in Brown University, Carpenter earned a degree in American civilization. Between college years she would play local bars and clubs in the Washington, DC area. By 1986, she was a local star, winning five Washington Area Music Awards. She released her 1987 debut "Hometown Girl", produced by guitarist/producer John Jennings.
She returns to Washington almost every summer to perform at the popular outdoor venue Wolftrap.
Why Walk When You Can Fly lyrics:
In this world there's a whole lot of trouble, baby
In this world there's a whole lot of pain
In this world there's a whole lot of trouble
But a whole lot of ground to gain
Why take when you could be giving, why watch as the world goes by
It's a hard enough life to be living, why walk when you can fly
In this world there's a whole lot of sorrow
In this world there's a whole lot of shame
In this world there's a whole lot of sorrow
And a whole lotta ground to gain
When you spend your whole life wishing, wanting and wondering why
It's a long enough life to be living, why walk when you can fly
In this world there's a whole lot of cold
In this world there's a whole lot of blame
In this world you've a soul for a compass
And a heart for a pair of wings
There's a star on the far horizon, rising bright in an azure sky
For the rest of the time that you're given, why walk when you can fly
First heard this nearly 20 years ago. I love it as much now as I did then. Beautiful and inspiring... the song and the lady.
In 1996 i bought a Packard Bell desktop computer and it came with a bunch of bundled sampler ect stuff... this song/video was on a cd sampler..23 years later i re-examined it and cd still works...that little girl of 6 i got the computer for is grown with a Masters and lives far away......

Her heart shines out for the world to see.
I remember watching the "Jubilee" concert as a kid & singing MCC when I was little. I even saw her at Wolf Trap in 1999 when I was six. Last summer was the first time I saw her in concert since 1999. She was phenomenal!!!!
MCC has helped me stay sane and hopeful since my thirties, and she'll continue to help me stay sane and hopeful through these horribly scary times to come, post 11-8
Susan MacDonnell "Why walk when you can fly.." I hope you drop your heavy fears and allow yourself to fly above it all. I have and I am happy. Taking MCC with me!
