Right. When both teams are well coached and have good athletes, the option is often neutralized but when the offense has better athletes and coaching, the option is extremely difficult to stop.

The best offense in football is the triple option to THIS DAY. If ran correctly it can not be stopped. If I were a Head coach today I would run the triple option. I watched a rival in high school beat us for 15 straight years running the triple option with inferior athletes while we were trying to play pro style. You don't have to have a 5 star QB, you can put a wideout back there, you don't have to have John Hannah type linemen, you don't need Barry Sanders back there. You just need decent athletes because the defense is having to make so many quick decisions they are gonna mess up.
Would be amazing seeing it in the NFL. You wouldn’t have to pay QBs and WRs 50% of the cap which means you have more money to spend on defense. Combine that with the fact that you would also be grabbing players that really only need to run block or run themselves it would make the offense even cheaper because they would most likely not even be in the league in the first place. OLinemen don’t have to work on or worry about pass protection, RBs don’t have to pass block or be receiving backs, and TEs just run block themselves. Your QB would be hella cheap and RBBC would keep those costs down too. Would be able to draft and pay only the best defensive players so you should even have the #1 defense. With offense chewing up a bunch of clock your defense would also always be rested. So basically an offense of athletic maulers with a top defense year in year out.
When GT would go up against teams with superior talent on the d-line (eg. LSU, Iowa), the latter could typically shut it down. I'm guessing that at the 1A level, the athletic differences are more substantial than they were between your school and that opponent. I do think the TO can do great if two teams are at similar speed/size levels.

This is the only option I can watch. The modern shotgun "read option" just sucks. The triple option seems to defy logic. Lining up in 31 or 32 personnel means the offense will run 80% of the time, the defense should just be able to put 8-9 in the box and stop it. Yet they can't if it's run well.
My coach ruined our high school team with running this as our only package. Had my ass playing full back running between the tackles at 150 pounds when I should’ve been playing slot or receiver 😂

The spread option will become obsolete the minute they ban cut blocks and then the service academies will have to figure out how to win with a conventional offense!
And Georgia Tech will no doubt abandon it now with Johnson leaving. The offense is too one dimensional, and once a triple option team falls behind by more than two scores the game is pretty much over!
I've always hated the cut blocks in option offenses...if you use your angles and keep running, you could have 2-3 linemen downfield every play, eliminates the need for open field heroics if everyone keeps their feet moving...who wants a lineman who's only good for one block each play anyways?

Ran this offense as a youth coach, my qb was my best athlete. A 3 win season turned into a 8-2 win season. We only loss to the super talented teams.
