Strange Discord Raid Method that Bans Servers

- Discord servers getting raided are nothing new. However imagine a squeaky clean Discord server getting completely banned off the platform. How does this happen? Is there a mole at Discord banning specific people? Do Discord raiders have a secret connection with Discord staff?
No that's stupid.
These discord servers are getting banned because raiders are spamming them with bad content. Add in Discord's unreliable and crap support system, and you have a wonderful way of shutting down any Discord server you want.

Discord can’t fix their app even if they were threatened with a nuclear weapon.
Honestly. I said “I’m 12 (to discord staff this is a joke, I am 18 years old)” in a server and I still got disabled. They requested my photo ID with DOB, face and discord tag. I provided everything necessary and fully visible and got ignored for two weeks. A week later I sent another. Got ignored. Another week (right after they said “if you don’t provide the necessary requirements we will delete your account”) I sent 2 more. Ignored again. And then they deleted my account of FIVE YEARS. Nearly 600$ and 5 years of communication with people down the drain because these incompetent fucks can’t fix the easiest problems. They don’t even have a support number for god’s sake. Only emails.
Easily abused TOS + a guaranteed deletion because moderation staff DO NOT respond to emails.
Wrong, they would have made it just barely fixed and lock it behind nitro.
yea like discord on android was bad now its trash
Roblox too. They have so many issues with their game and website and yet they won’t even get to it.
They wouldn't fix it even if aliens threatened to destroy the whole solar system.
Solution: remove the chat feature from discord. The platform would be better off without it....

nah but thats the point of discord
@@electrifiedwits thats the joke...

Yeah since calls can deal with that
So instead of discord, just deleting the message and banning the account.
They delete the server and let the account carry on?
Wow... just... wow
Discord moment
Y'know Discord Staff is only bots nowdays
@@scientificallyaccuratespino I know Discord is bad but holy shit, they keep suprising me
correction:discord bans the server for allowing such content (even though they cant use their heads to realize the message was edited just recently and the message was sent several months ago), basically its a kick in the balls to the server owner for allowing that message for that long on the server
Well, nuking the whole server also bans the individual account that sent the bad content along with everyone else on the server.
One solution would be for Discord to take different action on reported messages that were edited and/or older than a certain time frame. In other words, if reported messages are a week old and edited, just delete the message instead of banishing the server as a whole.
But again, that's on Discord.
When they do single out a certain user, they ban that user instead.
For all that effort, they should just ban the user instead. It makes the most sense and honestly should be how discord operates. The only time a server should go down is if those running it are the ones engaging in the banned behavior and are in turn banned as users, since it's safe to assume that if the creator engages with banned content, they allow their users to do the same and replacing them at that point won't change the server behavior.
Plus, shutting down the server without banning the offending users just encourages server ban evasion, and the problem will only get worse as people come up with these insane ways to bypass moderation efforts.
Actually you can set up a bot and link it to a channel only accessible to staff and it can view edited messages and see if it goes against the rules and then they can go straight to the message and delete it as well as ban them
Or send reports notices directly to a staff channel and only investigate if the message doesn't get deleted or if there are suspiciously many/ regular reports.
well it's not just the server, you also get a warning or your account deleted if it's fairly new just because of one person posting stuff, overall a trash platform and it needs a competitor
This can be critical for blocking scammers who tries to send out links to scam sites. Real question is, does it also affect Discord’s ability to invite users to servers? We all know some servers can also be scams :/
You can allow list discord server invites
Meanwhile I reported a blackpill discord server with actual racists that encouraged others to harm themselves, filled with the most horrible human beings and nothing happened to that server. Not only I reported racist messages from the owners, co-owners,admins and normal members but I also sent a support ticket asking for the server to be taken down as it is extremely dangerous and nothing happened. The simplest solution would be Discord no longer bans servers for that.
The second simplest, bot reports every edit to an offsite audit log, also continuously scan every past link for changes.
Discord needs to ban very very quickly or else their entire platform is at risk of a very terrible legal battle. Having any chance of specific bad content on their platform for an extended period of time is extremely bad so usually they will ban and restore servers once an appeal is made. Unfortunately that is what they have to do and the best solution for discord is simply hiring more moderation.
Bots already can log every single edited message. I use dyno bot for edited messages in my server
@@PlavorSeol Unfortunately this issue becomes legal as some of the content that may be sent by the attacker is not taken lightly, from the eyes of the government discord's servers are now hosting very very illegal imagery which could get them in quite a lot of trouble.
they restore false bans quite quickly.

As someone who's made a server myself this is a really helpful, thanks for making this :>
we the same :fire:
It would be helpful if it worked
You have to count on raiders being stupid
kiirrrrrby
Discord really need to take contest into account:
- If the message was edited, then that wasn't the original content.
- If the message is older than 25 messages in that channel or older than a week, it's not moderated anymore.
- If it's a single message, it's an exception, not the norm of the server.
- If it's a single user with multiple messages, it's a single user and not the server.
- If it's from multiple people who has joined the last week or month, but the server is over a year old, these people are raiders.
People can probably come up with more contexts to take into account.
Bots aren't a good solution to this either, Discord API won't let bots read messages that are over 14 days old. If somebody really wanted to fuck with your server, they'd send a message, wait two weeks or a month or so, edit their messages, and nothing would catch it or notice it besides maybe the server's audit log. Say you ever piss somebody off that's a longtime member? They could edit some of their earliest messages or possibly edit a message that's somewhere in the middle of old and new so people couldn't find it easily, then boom, server terminated because they edited a buried message that's old enough that a bot won't catch it.
The only real way to deal with issue is for Discord to actually do something doing anything in describe in this video just degrades the server experience.
I've always found it stupid that discord seemingly targets the innocent most of the time.
why do they never check what the person is actually reporting? and then, when someone is actually being a terrible person, like grooming or something, they get away with it. I will never understand but oh well.
A very simple thing would be if Discord had an audit log that actually functioned like a proper audit log. Meaning show the content of messages that are edited (the before and after), show the content of deleted messages and if someone deletes their own message (last I checked it only shows if someone *else* deletes the message), and particularly if a message is reported check if it was edited and what the before/after was.
" Oh , it's skibidi toilet. This person must have brain damage "
I guess my brothers/sisters does have, lucky am i, i don't.
😂💀
If your server isn't too large you can also setup bots like carlbot or dyno or sapphire etc. to log every time a message is edited into a channel that moderators can see.
This works for huge servers too, message edits arent common enough for bots to get overwhelmed.
I just set this up, didn't realize you could do that. Tysm!
@@spider_sf I wasn't really worried about the bots getting overwhelmed, more the moderators watching it.
as a mod on one community server a can confirm this works perfectly.
i feel like a counter to this could be botting so that after the ToS breaking edit happens, a bunch of bots who had already messaged at random times in the day would spam edits to flood the logs, and then the mods would only think somebody randomly raided the server logs for fun or something after taking care of the editing spam
this sort of gets countered by verification systems but im sure there could be people petty enough to get all of those bots verified to carry on with the task
I think that maybe a good solution would be to make report button also send edit history of the message so that discord staff can maybe sense what's goin on, if they would even care that is
That's actually a smart solution, the problem is that it's just more moderation, they already struggle with standard stuff. Best would be to have a bot that checks for edited messages and send them in a channel only mods can see with a ping, to check if it's harmful.
That removes the point of editing the message.
Bold of you to assume discord even tries to solve issues
@@Lone55345 it doesnt need to be public, it can be sent just only via report button to discord
@@lavarschwell there is Dyno and arcane who snipe edited messages but not messages that are sent days/months/years ago
I think a good solution would be a server option that makes it so that posts older than 'x' days, and/or further than 'y' posts back in a chat can't be edited by non-mods. In general there's very few ligitimate reasons to edit a post older than a week unless you're managing something like a rules chat as a server moderator/admin.
i aint readin allat.
This would be an effective solution. Alternatively they could make it so you can’t edit *links* in your posts after a certain amount of ‘x’ time or further than ‘y’ posts back without administrator perms.
They could also allow you to tap on an edited message to see what it showed before (links and all) and if the previous message displayed no bad content it wouldn’t be counted and instead the message would be deleted.
Discord really needs to add an in-house "disable message editing" feature for servers to make issues like this less atrocious
Even a disable message deletion feature, like Slack.
@@robertplayz9157 Disable message deletion becomes a privacy violation fast. But disabling editing? Ez, and should already exist

First of all, the filter can completely be bypassed by adding "?=://youtube•com/", at the end of the link ("." substituted with "•" cause YT keeps deleting my comment but you know what I mean).
Also the whole filter doesn't work for hostnames with non-alphanumeric characters, so literally every punycode domain.
Discord yet again not doing anything to improve their platform :/
Important to note, if you do the regex thing you might want to additionally add an alternative thing for http too since http links can be sent in discord
Edit: Sorry, the replies to this comment are correct. I dont really know regex that well but I just saw it contain https so I assumed it only matched on https urls, so sorry for any confusion I caused
the question mark after the s makes it match with or without that s
* matches any character, so http is covered
@@BryanLu0 in regex a * means "match the previous item 0 or more times". secondly, the * in the regex is in the middle and does not affect the matching of the protocol.
Discord should just keep track of edited messages for this exact reason
I was in a server that got terminated, I was an admin I lost my account from 2016, contacted support got auto response by a bot, then I reached out on twitter they " attempted to help " until I showed them why I was banned and boom got ignored, ghosted no response and now my account is delete, got to love discord!
This is why your server needs to be moderated and use a bot to check edited messages
Yeah we use Dyno for logs and edited messages, it's pretty useful for that type of things
@@Akel-di4kx and arcane

glad that you made a video about it and i hope discord will come with an update that will allow server owners to for example make it impossible for certain roles to edit there message, maybe even with an added time limit for edits that would be perfect
that way you only have to check it for a certain time period or not at all
Yes, seems reasonable that you can't edit a message that is over an hour old, or 15 messages old, whichever happens first.
@@Liggliluff we need some thing like this asap
5:00 RIP people trying to edit their messages when they mess up the URL or have a better URL

As a person who's made a wiki server for a show that doesn't exist over here, this'll come in mighty handy over here! Thanks for the video!
Easiest solution is just to add logs to ur server. It will show when the message was sent and when it was edited. Hopefully it's enough for discord to understand that it was changed later on when no one realised
dyno has logs for message edits, so could be controlled a bit

Hear me out. What if you don't make a level list, but just give image perms to people you trust? Ofc it still has some holes, but its better than a level system where the raiders can grind to get it, bc if someone is gonna get your server terminated you can usually tell ahead of time
Yep that's basically the lowest level solution.
Some manipulation master gonna bring some trust issues to people

You can't do that, Discord caches embeds with the images for us so nothing like this happens
Media caching can be disabled using a http header, and discord will actually create a new cdn entry for the image when the message is loaded again.
@@davr1 Thanks for correction!
Mox's server was actually targeted with this, luckily he was able to mitigate it.
You know, Discord could fix this right now but given the leanings of Discord admins they never will. Make it so that messages are only reportable for a certain amount of time after they're sent. Say 24 hours. After that reports against that message are automatically ignored. That would destroy this raiding method and prevent other forms of false flagging.
But if a server really is sharing bad images, they would post a basic message, pin it, then after a day they can edit it and even do multiple messages a day ahead/multiple images per message. It would only slow them down
@@someoneelse5350good, better having 1 cp being distributed per hour than the copious amount of 39999823846826e+ Yottabites they get per second

Thank you for this, I have a discord server for a school club and I’m scared that there are raiders going to make my school’s channel banned
Pro tip: make a mod logs channel for edited messages and make your mods look through not only the active channels, but also through the logs of edited messages
That should be enough, but if it isn't you can setup a reaction system and filter content better so the log channel would show only relevant content and it would require modsto react to a message in order to ensure it won't get deleted in the next few hours.
7:47 is this a cry for help? 🤔
I have a kind of solution to prevent this happen
You can use carl-bot to do this
Use the /log channel command and select a staff only channel (preferably a new channel) and you can see all the message changes that everyone made
This works best with smaller server because the amount of messages being send out is easier to check daily
It should help solo acts as well but I'd need to check. :)
another useful thing is using probot, because it has a logs feature, which shows you whenever a message is edited/deleted or anything like that, including when probot removes a message for example
Thank you NTTS! Finally my server got banned for this and now i finally know why!

as someones whos worked on link embedding for their own site, replacing the image that gets embedded from the link (if it's set up like in 5:32 and not a direct link to the image), the image won't update unless the message itself is updated/reposted. It's a fun quirk of the caching setup discord has
The only issue is that if messages are really old/far behind, bot won't see edits on them
6:47 'every single links' bro the regex is [a-z] and it doesn't know about unicode
Although, Unicode can't easily be used in a regex. What would be nicer is if AutoMod converted URLs into Punycode (using regular characters and starting with "xn--")
if you wanted to take the time and resources, you could make a discord bot that stores the hashes of every piece of media sent in the server along with what message they were sent with, and you could periodically check all the messages with media in them agains th elist of what should be there
thanks for keeping us safe ntts bc if you didn't, no one else would :)

Nice dude! Keep up the good work, hopefully you'll have even more subscribers soon!
Wow, I never knew automod could be THIS big of a powerhouse. I have almost 5 years of moderation experience and this is just chef's kiss.
Even the final solution is easy to get around. You can have : in a url even in the middle, when you go to the website it gets decoded into a different character, but its message phrases. Same thing with // if you have a custom webserver that redirects everything to one single mp4 or gif file.
A naked man fears no pickpocket.

Its crazy how many dozens of exploits could be completely removed by just adding a timer to edits or removing edit altogether
Solution: Discord makes it to where when ever someone sends a message, rather it be in a server or in DMs, that message gets put on a invisible timer and when it runs out that message will no longer be editable. Maybe they can even make it to where you can change how long that timer is in a server if you are a server owner. I'm thinking 30 minutes is perfect.
do discord servers not have chat auditing where they log everything that happens to a message and mods can see it
funny thing is, if you look up live leak accidents on youtube, some are still floating around. It's still gore
we litterally have a bot that has "recently edited messages" and "recently deleted messages" page in the discord mod pages here kek
