I asked you this question 2 days ago. Just found this video now, where you answered my question, Kelvin. Thank you. It's FASCINATING that the water flows through the bottom of the water jackets, and comes back through the heads! I had no idea that the rear bridge exists only for the sake of the heater!
Hey great informative vid dude...im from the Caribbean (warm climate all the time)...i have a 150 model Prado and was thinking of removing the stat and plugging the bypass...but changed my mind after ur video n reading comments. I think that stats should be replaced once every 10 years just as a precaution...before they stick closed and overheat engine...especially on diesel engines that are sensitive to ovetheating.
Hi kelvin. I am running a 1uz in my boat (alpha1gen2 outdrive).mercruiser Heat exchanger cooling. The engine runs well without a thermostat but only reaches approx 50°. I have tryed to run it a couple of times with an 82° thermostat but the engine doesn't like it and goes into a limp mode state. Take it out again and its fine.. I have changed the ecu temp sender.. Its like the engine is getting up to temperature but not circulating well, new water pump.. Any ideas? Thanks.
question, just drained coolant from block and radiator, noticed that filler hole 10mm torx is still full of old coolant, sucked it up using vacuum, but still not able to refill (coolant won't go down at all) now filled radiator through the reservoir but engine block still void of coolant. cant figure out whys that
Kelvin I’m about to put a 3uz into my kit car but I only have a small area for a radiator do the uz’s need a lot of cooling? I have quite a lot of depth just not a lot of width or height
Good morning Justin. UZs do need a good efficent radiator to keep them cool. Lots of guys struggle with designing a good cooling system. Often we are squeezing this large lump into small holes so good airflow becomes an issue. Cheers Kelvin
On the water bridge at the back of the engine if I have no heater in the car (kit car) is it best to link the pipes to each other or blank them off at the bridge? Little bit confused with these pipes
He highly suggests just capping them. Looping them can cause issues. I've got the heater hoses looped on my 7m supra right now since the heater core is leaking and yet to see any issues arise from it though. But listen to Kelvin, he knows much more than me.
Have you seen my video on which hoses to blank on the engine? I always blank if no heater is connected. The heater functions as a radiator so if no heater is present it leaves an uncooled passage for the coolant. I always blank. Cheers.
Hey what about if you are running an electric water pump with the thermo controller? Strictly offroad 4wd that's going to get a fair bit of abuse? Any advice around pros and cons with EWPs
All depends on the setup you have. Both the winchlux and big red (the 4x4 burnout video where the clutch smoked up) have radiator on the back using stock waterpump. If using a EWP then if its mounted in the return hose to the engine using it to pump water into closed thermostat is likely going to cause issues. As its not easy to remove the stock waterpump thats still there to circulate coolant so the ewp becomes a helper pump so set up with a suitable controller so it only runs once thermostat is open they are normally fine. Cheers.
@@CartuneNZ good info. Is it worth removing fins or even the propeller off the water pump and just running the EWP. Then I'll be able to continue to run EWP once the engine has stopped to reduce heat soak.
@@justintempleton9917 I would be worried about keeping the unit balanced when removing bits. . If you want to keep the EWP running them removal of thermostat and blanking the bypass circuit is vital. Then ensure the engine does get up to temperature. Cheers
Hi man how are you? just get some trouble with my cooling line and don't understand.... Get a mishimoto calorstat and runing a radiator with cap with no heater tank.... when i put full throttle i just get a massive water jet from the cap/ top of the radiator... Know it's not easy to understand like that but do you have any idea? head gasket new with mls and nothing special... :/
Personally I would test the pressure in the cooling system. If when warm the pressures increase massively then I would be looking at the head gasket sealing. Cheers Kelvin
Often in a jetboat the thermostat is removed from the engine and a external unit is fitted with the thermostat mounted in the mixer unit. This external unit combines the hot engine water with cold raw river water so the engine gets supplied with a warm (40-50 degree C) water to cool the engine. If this isnt done then pumping completely cold water directly into the engine can cause damage. This system is for raw water cooling, with a heat exchanger we still normally run a thermostat. Cheers Kelvin
Many racecars we do over here have redesigned cooling systems with other means of ensuring correct temperature is reached. Its not good to just remove the thermostat and doing so is likely to cause damage
It's ok if the bypass is open but it will also be full open to the radiator without a thermostat, so the coolant/water will constantly be cooled down and not enough hot bypass coolant will be recycling, so the engine will run colder, which is not only less efficient but can cause other issues, usually minor ones
Your statement is incorrect. Without a thermostat most situations the engine ends up overheating due to reduced flow through the radiator as most tracks through the bypass. This is major problems in most setups.
@@CartuneNZ listen, the thermostat allows the coolant to run through the engine, and cycle back through it without being cooled by the radiator, when you get close to operating temperature the stat starts to open allowing some coolant to be cooled and mix back with the hot coolant keeping it at ideal temp. Without a stat, the coolant is all being cooled so it runs cooler. So you have no clue what you're talking about
@@CartuneNZ maybe your engines in Australia are built differently but here in America almost all the cooling systems are the same and they'll all run cold without a stat
@@ericaasen4512 I'm not in Australia, I'm in NZ. Ive seen lots of uz engines destroyed due to no thermostat. Continued driving they just get hotter and hotter.
@@CartuneNZ not ours, like I said, ours the coolant just keeps running through the radiator and never gets up to temp. I ran my boat like that cuz I couldn't find the right stat. It was an old 350 Merc, I've done it on my ford's too, same thing
I have a buddy that has a street/drag car. He runs without a thermostat thinking that it runs cooler, couldn't be farther from the truth. I asked him when does the water get a chance to stop in the radiator to cool down. He looked at me puzzled. I explained to him that it needs to sit and cool in the radiator then when the thermostat opens up it exchanges the hot water or cool water. Nevertheless he's probably still running without a thermostat. Sometimes people do things wrong for so long if he comes rite.👍
I've seen this so many times. As you know just because something works doesn't mean it is right. I'd guess there are inconsistent temps around his block. I see it in jetboats too where they set up cooling systems incorrectly. I'm going to keep spreading the knowledge and hopefully some people will listen and learn. Cheers
understanding how the system works helps to avoid dumb mistakes like removing the thermostat without other mods. Just removing the T-stat has a high possibility of other more serious issues.

Absolutely, I often change the T-stat with a new genuine item as maintenance.
Another educational video, thanks for posting

Bypass black off or not for race cars??? Please help
