- Six sporanos, nine Ebs, in reverse chronological order. A tough note to pull off!
Some may think the addition of this Eb to be grotesque, I think it to be thrilling when done correctly.

Viktoriia Chenska 2012 -Thank you to trovatoreua for providing me with the correct date :)
Adelaide Negri 1990
Aprile Millo 1986
Aprile Millo 198? - This is from the Verona performance, does anyone know what year?
Marisa Galvany 1973
Maria Callas 1951
Maria Callas 1950
There are sopranos and there is Maria Callas.
None of them can compare to Callas. She is on a very much higher level.
Callas did not drop off the high note. She gripped that note!! Brava.
Callas forever!! Style, technique and passion.
Most definitely
callas forever.. tone is different
Callas 1951 - THE BEST!! forever and always
Of all these ladies, I most admire Callas. Yes, they all hit it, but La Divina had the power to hold it. The others only carried the note for about 3-4 seconds. But Callas held it for 7 seconds both times. Incredible. Brava, Madame Callas!
Proper technique
I think that the one she gave a year later, in 1951, was even stronger and more rousing. It was considered a monumental vocal feat when Callas did it, and a few, as shown here, have attempted it, but NONE of them make the sheer electrical impact that Callas did. What a note! What a diva she was ---------- the one and only for all time.
Stronger but not longer by 1 second
Callas is absolutely the only one that could pull this off !!!!
Agreed! Only Callas had the sheer power to hit and sustain such a note....for 7 seconds! None of the others came close. Brava, La divina!!
And she has held it for longer.
Indeed, some of them sounded flat. There really is no point in attempting to even sing an interpolated high note, if your pitch is not quite right.
ua-cam.com/video/8pD0MvrZn9I/v-deo.html this the longest that I've found
Callas the fury of singing
Daring to compare Callas with those other singers is like comparing champagne to Sprite
robert Santoni Quite offensive comparison. Sprite bottlers must prosecute you
Theodossiou- Scooping the hell out of that Eb6.
Chenska- Almost cracks at the end.
Negri- Unsupported sound. Very shrill.
Millo- Taken cleanly, even with a glitch mid-way.
Galvany- Sounds almost under pitch.
Callas- Power, breath-control of the highest order. Amazing.
This is an unbeliveabe note! Always makas me crazy!
Aida have to sing quite lot before that, and very much after it, Daramatic parts in 3rd act and lyrical high pianos is the finale. So It's very brave from a soprano ti risk this note. Great respect fom them.
Callas...nothing else to say. Nothing else one CAN say!
…People were nailed back into their seats and enthusiastic from head to toes. They must have been sure to enjoy the greatest female Singer-Personality ever walked on earth. A lifetime privilege. MC belongs to the heritage of mankind and it is our duty and honor to transfer this knowledge to the next, and the next….generation. Mi piace moltissimo
Callas Eb is so rich and full.
No one - I say - no one can compare to Maria Callas. She is the clear winner by far, and for ever!
Theodossiou, flat both times, but more so the first one. MIllo, grandisima!.... Maria, the queen.
LA CALLAS!!!! Brava! The most thrilling and incredible Eb6 ever!! No one can come even close to what she did; in ANY role for that matter!
Callas 100 everyone else 50 or below
The only singer her who even came close to that fifty mark was MILLO! Sure she is not Maria but she can sing and can sing well!! She doesn’t scoop or conserve energy for this note and I love it!!
But alas no one can top Callas because that’s woman was no longer herself she WAS Aida!!!!!!!
Given the examples I may think as some regarding the addition of this Eb. However, I too find it thrilling when done correctly. What a tough act to follow was Maria Callas.
Callas photo in 1950 is so gorgeous!
Callas. Just perfection. 💝
Callas's high notes at this stage in her life were easy as pie, she could sing them without batting an eye. All the others sound like they're screaming for dear life. The 1951 recording is being played here a bit too fast and the note come out closer to E than E-flat.
Callas la eterna insuperable! Bravissima!
*Callas forever*
What impresses about Callas is Her enormous musicality!!! due the extraordinary instrument!!!!!
Sempre sarai la migliore cara Maria
The first two are definitely off key, the others are ok, Maria is the gold standard, she puts gravitas into the high notes, not shrill like others.
Thank you!
Callas pioneered this Eb, she owns this Eb.
This is great. Obviously Callas did it best - closely followed by Millo - but where is the lady who sings the E flat in the grandfather store? Rarely has the note been attempted with such hubris, such unjustified confidence. Callas and Millo were at the peak of their powers, and as thrilling as the interpolation is, it was nowhere near the gamble for them that it was for the grandfather clock soprano.
Yes Millo also performs admirably
Necesitan mejorar.
Callas, Callas, Callas only CALLAS FOR EVER 👏👏👏👏👏❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
Did the other singers ever even hear Callas do this? After that, why bother?
James, I believe you're right. As I recall, the reason she did that in the first place was that the manager of Bellas Artes in Mexico City asked her to do that since some 19th cent. singer had done that in that theater
.
Angela Peralta was the soprano whom Callas tributed in Mexico with the E-flat.
The story, I think as Simionato related, goes that the head of the Mexico City Opera showed Callas a score of Aida that had belonged to Angela Peralta, in which she had written the E-flat, and he asked her if she could sing the note. Callas said, "If you want to hear my E-flat, you must engage me for Puritani next year." During Aida, Kurt Baum was acting like such a boor and angering all the other leads that during the first intermission, Simionato came to Callas's dressing room and said, "Dear, for me, please sing the E-flat". Being the conscientious colleague that she was, Callas said they will have to get the ok of the other soloists, except Baum of course. Everyone agreed, and Callas sang the gigantic E-flat, which had its desired effect on Baum. In 1951, she did it again for fun, and it was even more epic than the previous year.
It's amazing how Callas eclipsed her own legendary 1950 Eb at 1951. All other ladies that sing Aida will give you pretty singing, but Callas sings it like a monstrous tigress that gives you the real deal.
She wasn’t called La Divina for nothin! Squarely on pitch, plucked from mid air, well supported, round sound, with beautiful resonance and good colour. Callas wins hands down!
Callas is the best ❤❤❤
Thanks so for this compilation!! What a joy!
To me - that Eb - when sung by the right soprano - completes and perfects the finale!!
I love the story of the ghost of Verdi appearing above to bless Maria Callas when she first interpolated the Eb. And Maria did this because of some long forgotten soprano who evidently did do the Eb. But to me Maria in '51 is the best - then MC in '50 with Galvany and Millo (2x) being wonderful.
Also, turnipoverlord - the Verona Aida, I believe was in 1989.
Callas- a force of nature, no wonder people were cheering! The sheer energy and power of her voice, the emotion in it, the perfect match to Verdi’s score.
MARIA CALLAS REINA DIVINA!!!!!
Callas Callas Callas the Queen of Opera!
Keine von den angeführten Sängerinnen konnte diese High-Note so triumphal singen wie Maria Callas-Thank you very much for the posting.
Callas' sound was bigger and Fuller. So I go with Callas.
You can see that Galvany and especially Callas are on a much higher level than the others. Of course, Callas is the best among everyone and Galvany (incredible talent that she too is) doesn’t even compare to Callas, but both can be grouped together here because they do something that the others do not. I’ve commented on this before, but I’ll repeat it because I think that it’s absolutely essential if you’re a soprano and you’re going to attempt this note. You have to carry the note well beyond the re-introduction of that iconic “Triumphal March”. The others just sing the note and then jaggedly cut it off as the March starts going, and it sounds completely out of place. That is why the crowd practically brought the house down with their clapping and screaming each time Callas attempted the note!!!
Old school always wins.
Exactly
Callas herself said that this recording did very much for that high note (as many old ones does to the voice). But thrilling it is nevertheless...
@electricxcircus
I don’t remember.
Does it matter?
@@draganvidic2039 That’s true, distortion creates the impression of size.
Callas is the best❤
Absolutly Callas, shes the Queen Of opera
BRAVISSIMA Callas !!!!!
I don't know where the mic was placed, but I was at one of those Opera in the Park Aida's performance by April Miller and her Eflat in actuality was tiny, For a brief moment I myself didn't know that she was still singing. I myself didn't know she was still singing for a brief moment. and it was not even audible to many in the audience as was clear because many in the Park audience begin their rush to the exits before the music ends and in this case before the diva-wanna-be had sung her last.(for the act...). And I thought to myself there is nothing of value in merely signing an unexpected high note unless it is something that creates real excitement in the audience. Callas's top E flat was a genuine event that thrilled the audience, Millo's was a self-congratulative stunt that simply went largely unnoticed.
Millo was outdoors at the Arena di Verona. Entirely different acoustic. Harder to capture than indoors as all the others were.
Maria Callas, 1951!
Maria is the best
great videooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo love your channel make more of these BRAVOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
Callas: Spanish for Shut Up. And that’s what she did. She just made all other sopranos look amateurish. They’d better ‘Callas’ (shut up) with that Eb.
Aprille Millo has a quite beautiful Eb6, not as powerful as Callas' but beautiful. Callas? A bloody supernova
I loved that!
i playing my phone while playing the video, then I looked up by surprise of the high note I see Maria Callas 1951. My God ~ Was she a Goddess or a Monster?
Era ambas...
Both! The Sacred Monster.
Adelaide Negri
Callas by miles!
This is a note Callas created for herself. So that's why only she can pretty much do it. If you are ready to take on Callas try it. Otherwise prepare to fail. This is an epic note for an epic singer in an epic opera at an epic moment. You are either 'destroying the world' with that note or don't try. Just hitting the high note, coloratura style, is useless at that moment. Annihilate the orchestra and other singers and the entire chorus or just let the great moment that Verdi created be and don't detract from it. The slightly off pitch and 'thin' heady sounding examples prove the point. You can be a great singer but don't touch Callas's notes.
Created? Well, she sang it in honor the memory of Mexican soprano Ángela Peralta (1845-83) who regularly took it, it seems.
@@krunoslav1271what is nuts is that people who heard callas sing it were not alive yet are the time Peralta sung it, yet knew that this note had been sung before. What a shock this must have been for them
Callas by far the Diva
*FOREVER CALLAS*
No one, absolutely no one like Callas! Pure high Eb (MI bemolle sovracuto). ❤❤❤
marisa forever!!!!!
I guess the presence of Callas in this selection is to illustrate the difference between Singing and Screaming.
CALLAS!!! MARIAAAAAAA
Callas,always!
P.S. Isn't that an E (1951)? It is definitely higher than the others (even her own in 1950)
Kurt Baum: forever remembered for a note someone else sang.
At the end, Callas destroys them all!
First two sopranos were flat, bless their hearts. La Millo was great... but la Callas is the bEST!!!
I think Millo was the best, to be honest. Callas had fire, but actually sang a different pitch and couldn't stabilize the note.
@@robertstumpf6402 lol 2:21 can you hear her vibrato? Also she almost cracked and you said Callas couldn't stabilize her note 🤣
SOLO MARIA CALLAS AVEVA IL MIb TENUTO IN FORTISSIMO. NEPPURE LE CANTANTI WAGNERIANE POSSEDEVANO UN SI NATURALE O UN DO TENUTO COSI POTENTE.
Callas was a lazer beam piercing through… amazing.
And the winner is by any means and by far ... MARIA CALLAS!
the 2nd one from Millo the date is 1989
Callas was the only one to achieve so high Eb. The others one are beer comparing con Callas which is Champane rose 🌹❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Has anyone but an Eb6 at the end of Mahler 8?
Callas' top notes were best when she was bigger in size ... she lost a lot of the support she had in the voice after she became thin ... but who cares ... she was one of the greatest !
Will we ever see or her the likes of Callas again? No way!
Callas y Negri las mejores
No ''six sopranos'' the title have to be.... CALLAS and 5 sopranos...
first one pierced my ears :/ plus the first applause makes me think it was her mother on the first line lol
La Callas sempre unica, regna assoluta.....
Can anyone tell me the story of this Eb, because, if I am not mistaken, in the original the soprano goes from Bb'' to lower Eb''?
And the winner is ... Maria Callas!
With this Eb it's very simple. You either may hit it right and hold it strong or you better give it up completely. We are in the situation that up to now, only Callas was able to do it. All others just attempted and failed in my opinion. Somebody said here that they are brave. They are, indeed, but this is a useless bravery. They just risked to break their vocal cords for nothing.
Who pulled Dimitra's tail?
wwonka2 haha thats a good one
Have any other Aida's tried it since you uploaded this video in 2012?
Saioa Hernandez. And she did it the best since Callas.
small lyric instrument... cant compare to Callas
@@WongAndrew_ Read carefully. Did it the best since Callas. None of the people here did it as well as her except Callas who did it better. And hardly small ua-cam.com/video/S6Vusq2IK0M/v-deo.html

Wrong. Very developed full lyric.
To borrow a quote from Alan Jay Lerner regarding the applause "My Fair Lady" received when it was clear to the audience they were at the hit of the century. "The applause was like nuclear fission." - 4:04 - Callas forever!
Viktoriia Chenska - February 2012
Callas is eeenoooormouuuusss
