Maria Callas - Aida Act 2 Finale Mexico, 1950 (with huge E Flat)

  • The Story behind her famous E-Flats:
    After the dress rehearsal for Aïda, held on May 29, [impresario Antonio] Caraza-Campos asked Maria to sing the e-flat that the Mexican soprano of the eighteenth century Ángela Peralta used to sing at the end of the second act. She answered after a guffaw that it was impossible because many reasons, it was not written, she should ask it to the conductor and her colleagues, which she was not to keen to do, i.e. to ask, and lastly that it was of bad taste.
    The premiere of Aïda came on May 30, with Callas as the Ethiopian princess, Simionato as Amneris, Baum as Radames, Rober Weede as Amonasro and Moscona as Ramfis. After Celeste Aida, Baum had a great ovation as Maria after Ritorna vincitore. During the intermission after the first act, Moscona went to Maria's dressing room where he spoke to her in Greek igniting her anger, apparently conveying some things said by the tenor. She called Diaz-Dupond and asked to go to the conductor Picco and the other singers, with exception of Baum, asking permission to sing the e-flat "because if Baum tries to f (fregarmi) keeping the high tones, he will surely listen to them". When she sang that legendary E flat happened all what the diva was pursuing, the theatre became a mad house in frenetic applause and Baum exploded. During the curtain calls at the end of the second act, Baum, in English, told her "You will never sing in America, this was a real 'porcheria'", she just answered smiling and going out to accept the love of the audience, "We will see"
    (it has come to my attention that this is the May 30 performance, the information that accompanied my copy of this performance was incorrect, so i have changed the title to be accurate. To my knowledge [and i have tried exhaustively to find out] the June 3 only exists as a partial recording minus this thrilling Act 2 finale. Does anyone know if she did another high e?)

      Our Maya was no one to be trifled with. She was a very intelligent and a very kind lady but she did not take arrogant personalities idiotic scheming individuals Juju. She could handle herself quite well like Rudolph Bing said. Maria was more intelligent then all the opera stars that he had the Met. So she could not be controlled. or convinced because she had thorough accurate knowledge of the Opera itself and also everyone's singing part of the Opera. Talk about beauty and brains. I'm so happy you mention her Leonora - I think her Trovatore Leonora is perhaps the most underrated of all her roles. Who else, before or after Callas, have sung that part with such a combination of a big, dark, dramatic voice, an amazing chest voice, spotless coloratura with marvelous trills and of course such dramatic passion? I refer to her three live recordings here, her 1956 studio recording was made too late to capture the true essence of her Leonora.

    No sólo es el mi bemol sobreagudo , es la fuerza con que canta todo el concertante, no descansa, no disminuye el volumen, apenas si toma aire. Es una verdadera guerra en vivo entre Baum y la Callas. Cualquiera que viene después de ella, se cuida. A la Aida le espera ese terrible tercer acto, con esa aria cruel “O patria mía” y dos duos más. Es increíble la Callas, parece un bongo que se lanza gasolina y se prende fuego. Aún hoy la Netrebko no se atreve a cantar con esa fuerza, peor aún dar un mi bemol al final del segundo acto. La Callas estaba verdaderamente loca, llena de pasión, juventud y vida, pero sobre todo la CALLAS es la DIVINA...!!!!!!!

    As I heard it from Diaz-Dupond himself on a TV interview; on the performance of July 3, 1951 Callas complained that del Monaco was singing to loud and if he continued that way she would put in the E flat. And she did, holding the note with an astonishing lenth. That night was total mandness (pandemonium as Diaz -Dupond called it) at the Bellas Artes theatre in Mexico City. It can be experienced through the historical complete restored recording that someone had the fortunate idea to take from the radio broadcast. Elswhere here on youtube you can find the E flat of that unforgetable night.

      I think is Kurt Baum instead of Monaco. Kurt Baum like to hold note longer than it needed and tend to not cooperate with the soprano. And one day Callas get the conductor and other performer permission to surprise Baum with the scary E-Flat in order to steal all ovation from Baum. And this fun competition between them two last for a while, Baum had vow never sing with Callas again, however they sing together for IL Trovatore later on.

    • @immanuelpriyo1141
      @immanuelpriyo1141 3 роки тому

      @@morganchan2465 no it was Monaco... Callas and Monaco don't like each other... Monaco always sing with forte when he sings with Callas never with pianissimo. You can imagine how powerful he is, and he still sing that loud against Callas's middle notes.

  • @meltzerboy
    @meltzerboy 8 років тому +68

    Callas was aware she did not have the luscious tone of a Tebaldi or a Leontyne Price. But she was also aware she was not merely a singer of notes with a beautiful voice but much more a singer of words and phrases that have meaning and expression. Callas was a different kind of artist from those of her day and hearkens back (perhaps) to the singing of Pasta and Grisi. Her Aida is the most expressive on recording, particularly her version of Ritorna vincitor. It is not the most beautiful but neither the aria nor the opera is meant to be a showcase for a lovely voice. Callas had instinctive musicality and honed musicianship; she interpreted not only the written note and word but the musical intention of the composer like no other soprano had done before her.

    • @broncocastro2099

      meltzerboy Tebaldi's voice wasn't beautiful! It always sounded like an old lady's.

    • @meltzerboy
      @meltzerboy 7 років тому +9

      I beg to differ. Tebaldi had a very beautiful voice. Now later on in her career, her top tones might sound a bit steely, though never shrill. But in the 1950's and early 1960's, she was regarded as THE Italian soprano with respect to tone and phrasing, if not technique.

    • @lightmotivable
      @lightmotivable 7 років тому +8

      Tebaldi always sounded matronly to me, her flawless technique notwithstanding. The exception is her recording of La Boheme on Decca with Bergonzi, conducted by Serafin. On that one she's as delicate as a butterfly and sings it perfectly.

    • @meltzerboy
      @meltzerboy 7 років тому +5

      And speaking of butterflies, Tebaldi excels in that role as well, not only in sheer sound but in vocal expression.

Audience reactions in all the performances I saw were ecstatic, delirious, but spontaneous and her curtain calls at the end of each would go on for half an hour or more before the audience would let go. And you were left with a high that took days to calm down. People's reaction to her singing was incredible and has not been matched to this day by any other singer.

    Dear Callas Fan, thank you for posting this incredible performance. But I just wanted to add that Peralta could not have sung this is the 18th century, since the opera was written in the 19th

      No one dares try to do this. It took guts to attempt this unwritten note.

      Marlene Hartley April millo did it, but in my opinion it was not too good.

    Baum was such a mediocre and vulgar singer, he belonged to a small sized German city Opera screaming Der Freischutz, not at such places as the MET or Covent Garden! The only reason people still remember him is because of La Divina he so hated and whose - at least - 3 legendary broadcasts he destroys with his bad-canto presence!

      prima di parlare l'essere umano pensa...
      spero che Lei ha sentito la voce di Baum dal vivo?...
      Lei è un ragazzo prode,io adoro i giovani chi non hanno paura di niente.
      ''Baum mediocre and vulgar singer'' ?...
      ahahahahahahahahahahah !
      coraggio ragazzo,coraggio !

      ciao.

    sorry but I have to agree with Baum, this is indeed "porcheria", her E Flat of the following year in Mexico is much more impressive and focused.

      They all intentionally sang and played loud to their own will against Baum for being mean and since he didn't respect anyone and always sang too loud
