  • First video of 2020!
It's the end of a decade and now, sitting here as a 21-year-old person with hemiplegia I thought it would be good to go back to when I was younger, around the age of 15 and though hindsight recognise the negative things I was battling through at the time and then compare them to how different things are now in hopes it will help anyone watching that are going through the same things that I do know it won't last forever.

This video is amazing, you've come so far from when you were in school and overcome so much!
I'm so glad you've found a way to cope with your past struggles and transform yourself from a shy boy, to the strong, enthusiastic, kind man you are today!!!!
Without your videos there would be so many disabled people who may feel lost or may think that nobody understands what they're going through, but you've given them someone to look-up-to so thank you on behalf of all of those people xx

As an eighteen-year-old with a disability about to enter college, I want to say thank you for this video. I am so afraid of not being independent enough or ending up excluded. I hope everything goes well with time, again, thanks for the video. Hugs from Brazil.

Happy New Year. I think the anxiety thing can happen to anyone. I had really bad anxiety and panick attacks when I was in my late teens and early 20s, but I learned to manage it. I've lost a lot of confidence since being ill and becoming disabled. I also lost some of my hearing last year. I know that anxiety gets worse the more we avoid the things that make us anxious. But it's better if we gradually build up our confidence. I'm in the same position now at 55 as you were at 15 as I haven't got any friends, or maybe just one I rarely see. It's like starting again. I'm glad I watched your video as it reminded me about things I had forgotten and needed to hear. We can all learn new stuff regardless of our age.

Happy new year! I agree with you we can all learn things regardless of what age we are. It all comes down to life experiences and giving things time i think. I'm sorry to hear that you are in such a position. Keep your chin up and give it time and things will start to get better. count the little wins in your life and that will start to build up your confidence, but untimely take things day by day and don't be too harsh on your self and I believe everything else will fall in to place. Thank you so much for watching and I am glad the video has helped you out even if it's just a little bit :)

This is a brilliant video, Jon @AbilityStreet.
A lot of people will be encouraged by what you have said. I know when I was at high school in the 1980's, I felt that other pupils were more academic than I was, and I felt that I couldn't integrate, but with Facebook, I found that a lot of my old school mates back in Rochdale remembered me well, and I was liked better than I thought at the time.Social media helped me put that anxiety issue to rest.
Most of my education was in special schools, so I had more confidence in myself, as a disabled person, because my friends at school also had physical disabilities. We never really spoke about our disabilities, but we supported each other, and still have friendships that have lasted 32 years since I left school.
I like the way you've genuinely told people about your own experiences, Jon. This will encourage them to feel better about themselves. When you're around adults alot of the time, it's easy to think and speak as an adult. I am glad you have made more friends at college, who are similar to you, and you're able to talk things through with them. You've also excelled in other areas of your life too, as mentioned in other videos.
The development process stays with you for life, so you will always learn new things, as you get older.

Thank you mate I am glad you liked the video, Social media can be great for speaking to people and building relationships because as you say it eases a lot of the anxiety you would feel otherwise. Its interesting that you had an education in special schools because don't know much about them. I can imagine it would have been a nicer environment for you as everyone was similar to yourself so your disability wasn't an issue. Building such strong friendships that last for 32 years is amazing! thanks, mate for sharing all that as I have never been to a special school so as I say I don't know that much about them but from what you have just said it seems that maybe I would have had an easier school life if I went to one and possibly had a chance at making more friends. I am realising you never stop learning and growing which I think is what makes life so exciting. Thank you so much for watching mate!
