- Today I'm taking you on a wild camp in the beautiful but rugged landscape on the border of counties Leitrim and Cavan, Ireland
Naweeloge Top at 441m is another new and exciting route for me and I will be sharing my usual navigation practise using map, compass and timings in good weather, preparing for more difficult conditions this winter. But don’t let this put you off if that’s not of interest to you as the scenery and adventure will keep you entertained
This is another outing using my Osprey Aether 65l backpack along with my reliable Wild Country Helm 2 tent
If you enjoy this journey into the wilds of Ireland, don’t forget to like, comment, and subscribe for more wild camping adventures. Your support is much appreciated!.

Another excellent video Mike making Ireland look even more stunning.
@@leonardmcdermott7703 Thank you Leonard, appreciate your feedback, must head out further afield this year, we are privileged to live in such scenic country ATB
@michaelhanly8575 Give Wicklow a go, I'm in Dublin so it's my playground and i would recommend it 100%.
@@leonardmcdermott7703 definitely, be good to get a few suggestions from you for locations to pitch nearer the time, I did do a few walks last spring in Wicklow when I was getting back into the hiking, was not recording at that stage.
@michaelhanly8575 Google the 'Wicklow way' a sign posted route through Carlow Wicklow and Dublin, an ideal break in walk. Plenty of camping locations including adirondack shelters. Approximately 120km in total.
Really enjoyed this video, very calming and beautifully shot and informative. Definitely going to subscribe to see more!
@@daveo851 Hi Dave, very kind of you to put such an encouraging comment, I'm new to this and learning each time but enjoying the process, thank you 👍
Wild camping in such remote and untouched spots must be a true escape into nature. It is nice to follow your adventures and feel the freedom of exploring places that remain hidden from the crowds. 💖
@@DayInParadise it's very peaceful especially at evening times looking out onto quiet Lough, time slows down. Thank you for watching and commenting 🙂
Another great video from you, I love the navigation sections, they are so informative, thanks
I agree Billy.
It's an angle other videos don't generally cover.
@@BillyWestbury thx Billy, really appreciate the feedback glad it's working 😁
@@pipandbenji thx George so kind. I am experimenting with longer video, not sure if too long and I should split over 2 videos, what was your thought after watching?
Hi Mike. I really did enjoy that, thanks. I'd like to be a lot more comfortable with venturing off the trail using my maps and compass so I really appreciate the meticulous care you take in showing how you do it. I'm going to have to start paying more attention to how long it takes me to walk distances over rough terrain and up/down hill. My compass and map reading skills need work. I just got back before the snow hit the Wicklow Mountains from a 2-night solo trip. The first night I stayed in the forest just off the Wicklow Way but the second night I ventured off along an abandoned road that I saw indicated on the map in Strava. It would be very easy to never notice that the road was there or to think it was just a deer path. I really loved exploring on that old road because it was clear no one else had been there for years and years, and I found several epic campsites. Also I managed to exhaust myself (in a good way) in a much shorter distance than it would've taken if I'd stuck to the trail. And lastly I felt much safer camping alone in a spot that wasn't near the trail. It was so good all the way around and I had a lovely time. The next anxiety I need to conquer is camping solo out in the open where my tent can be seen and I'm exposed to the wind. Enjoy yourself out there! We have another stretch of winter sun coming up and it's very tempting to leave my stuff in my pack and go right back out!
@@robinferguson8911 hi Robin, such a nice well thought out comment. I understand how you feel about camping alone, it takes a bit of nerve for everyone, when the wind rattles the tent and it sounds so much like someone standing outside shaking it I have to tell myself at times to settle but you do get used to it and the peace we experience as sun starts to set is hard to communicate to others. I also think it is safer for some alone when camping to get off the beaten track so keep practicing the nav, I am no expert but once you get basics it's very satisfying. All the best 😊
Nice video. This looks beautiful. I am from the west side of the United States. But someday, I would love to camp there!
@@bradenrypien882 Thanks Braden, glad you enjoyed it. I have visited California and Oregon long time ago, had fantastic time. Hope you make it over here one day 👍
Just came across your channel. You’re close to my county of Fermanagh. If you ever venture across the border into Fermanagh I’d recommend lough navar forest, could walk for days around it. Few different wee lakes to find, a waterfall, all kinds of wildlife or go to the top and just admire the view.
@@paddyray6156 Hi paddy, thanks for the recommendation I was looking for different areas for change of scenery, had quick look on map this looks perfect. Parking at Magho maybe? Any issues pitching up in that locale?
Great video, especially for those if us who have just done a navigation course. It would be super if you could slow down through your calculation steps😉
@@olivemcgrath5231 Hi Olive, thank you it's rewarding to get nice comment. Well done on the course, I find map and compass nav makes trip more enjoyable, I will bear in mind speed when do next video, I did not want take too long in case bored people. I do a bit most videos have glance thro couple previous ones I think went into bit more detail. 👍
Just found your channel. You make good videos. Well worth a sub 👍🏻
@@paulkennedy5021 Hi Paul, thank you for generous comment, just a beginner at this so glad you liked it 😁👍
Electrolytes will help with your leg cramps. Enjoyed your video. I do the same down in Wicklow and find it’s really boggy here as well the higher you get 🤣
@@anselmocat glad you liked it, nice to get feedback, motivating 🙂. I must give electrolytes a go appreciate the thought thank you. Hardly found place that isn't boggy, but I will keep looking 😁👍
Excellent video as always Mike.
Would you believe i was looking at my outdooractive app with a view to doing a circuit of this area sometime this spring. It looks roughish for camping, but that hasn't stopped me before😂
I dont mind the longer video, but it just means annoying my long suffering wife more 😂 as i watch.
I enjoy your traditional approach to navigating and the fact that you show it helps to demystify it for those less familiar.
Happy New Year.
George
@@pipandbenji thx George good to get your opinion. Yes your right about being bit rough for camping also my wife is telling me to find areas more scenic make videos more interesting so I will have to expand my horizons. But if not been here certainly worth a look.
Happy new year to you and your wife as well George 👍
Enjoyed your great video. Can u go a little slower on the navigation bits. Magnesium tabs great if prone to leg cramps.
@@joanahern8638So kind Joan, Thanks for the feedback will take bit more time its hard to judge as don't want to bore people either, but point noted. Take a look at videos from 'map reading company' chap who does those is very good at explaining the detail. Definitely going to try magnesium as it happened a few times now, thank you
Lovely video as always Mike. Your tenacity is always a joy to watch, particularly through that wooded area, I would've turned around haha
But certainly worth it for that view, cracking timelapse of the sunrise, the scenery in the UK and Ireland really is hard to beat (weather permitting lol)
I really must try and get a hike or two in, up in the Lake or Peak District this year, it's been an awful long while.
@@broscy8544 ah your too kind 😁 usually when I get to the point of why did I go that way it's just as hard to go back as continue on haha. Really glad you enjoyed it, longer than usual video experimenting here, if you think too long let me know for future ones? Yes get out there in spring you'll love it, all the best 👍
@@michaelhanly8575 I think 15-20 minutes is likely your sweet spot for the average viewer, but no harm in having a more long-form video every now and then for those like myself who enjoy it, gives you more time to settle in and enjoy the journey alongside you. I'll be sure to let you know when I go on that hike!
All the best, Joe 👍
@@broscy8544 thanks Joe, appreciate the feedback 😉

Curious. What are these fences for???
@@gregmason2208 hi Greg, sheep, although none seen this trip. Keeps them out of the commercial wooded area in this instance
Thanks for the video Mike. Is that the full os map you take with you or just a section of it? Regards Ger
@@Ger-cx3rb Thanks for watching Ger, it's full map folded over and fitted into waterproof cover. It's 1:50,000 scale. Would be better using 1:25,000 to give more detail but it's the one I have 😁
